    The good news is that the show just gets better and better. Seasons 4 and 7 are particularly great, but honestly there's never been a bad season.

      I love hearing this, and it really does seem like 7 stands out in most of the comments I've read. Honestly at this point, I'm not even looking for the show to top itself, or for the tasks to get more zany, crazy, etc.; I really just like the good vibes of the show and the fun.

      It's always been interesting to me that some of my favorite seasons are hated by some people and the ones I'm less keen on are other people's favorites. Same with the contestants. Alex and Co. do a brilliant job of getting the mixes right and keeping things fresh.

      @@meganpierce392 they weren't bad seasons, they were just unlucky to be sandwiched between absolutely amazing seasons. TBH the closest Taskmaster has gotten to a truly bad season is the current one, season 17. We're only 3 episodes in but it's been really disappointing so far.

    The thing I love about the show is it shows how people can solve the same problem so many different ways and also how you interpret the rules.

    At least for me, a good portion of the fun of a new taskmaster series is discovering someone whom i'd never heard of before and falling in love with them over the course of the series.
    There are people i wish i got to see more of in a Taskmaster enviroment for sure, but the beauty of it is that these are almost all fairly active comedians. So you can go find their standup specials, or tv-shows, or podcasts or whatever.
    I think almost every series there has been at least one person who was either completely or mostly unknown to me, that I ended up completely adoring. And actually, that's only gotten more true the later in the series we get.

      It’s like when the Doctor regenerates. There’s a cycle of “nooooo I love the old one” to “nooooo I love the new one now” every time!

    • @DavidvsFilm
      @DavidvsFilm  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      Yes!!! Exactly. And even though we all buy into the ruse that the actors and comedians do these shows for the love or the fun (and I don't mean to be cynical- obviously that is a component), but this is also a brilliant self-marketing opportunity on their part as well. I would have probably come across Frank Skinner, for example, at some point, but now he REALLY stands out to me and I feel like I "know" him. Same with Romesh, and CERTAINLY with my unapologetic favorite, Roisin ;) So it's a win-win-win for everyone: the show, the cast, and us :)

  • @jjlonsdale5971

    Tim and Alex are friends IRL and Tim was a little bit of a “plant” - as it was the first series and they were worried it wouldn’t go well, Tim was asked to do the show and basically create chaos and see how far he could push the boundaries.
    That being said I’m pretty sure Tim excels at creating chaos in all his endeavors 😂

    • @DavidvsFilm
      @DavidvsFilm  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Hahahaha well-said! Yeah, I get that, and I don't mind it because it works. I'm fairly comfortable suspending disbelief to fit the narrative of something I like, so I'll still believe that his casting is organic, and also that the contestants really do run off with each others' prize possessions when they win ;)

    The expression “Monkeys in front of a typewriter” was a reference to a longer expression - “If you put a monkey in front of a typewriter, they’ll eventually type the works of Shakespeare.” 😂
    Don’t worry about a new cast. Every season I start off only knowing one if any of the contestants, and by the end they are all my favorites. I’ve usually seen at least one on Graham Norton or The Great British Bake-off.

      There are definitely contestants who aren't well liked but people generally don't or can't say anything about them. For example, the Taskmaster Reddit has a culture of toxic positivity. If anyone says a negative word about a contestant, they're attacked and downvoted but generally the comment is never seen because mods delete anything that isn't praise.

      @@JeM130177I’ve actually found that there has mostly been at least one contestant per series that I’ve not really heard of, like for this first series it was Tim Keys for me. I think that’s also part of the appeal, to have mostly familiar faces with the addition of someone new to possibly fall in love with…but even the familiar faces aren’t necessarily how you expect them to be…except for Julian Clary, he was exactly as expected 😊

      I don't think Americans are the only nationality who struggle to know every little local UK celebrity or actor by heart. 😏 I'm from Finland and no, I'm unfamiliar with most of the contestant. I still love the show, it's insanely funny. Depends on the contestants of course, all seasons aren't quite as fab when there's no chemistry between them.

  • @needyverse
    @needyverse 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    12:10 Greg saying 'monkeys in front of a typewriter' is a quick reference to a larger context - usually fairly well-known, so the contestants do understand him. Since you haven't heard it - there's a standard thought experiment from probability theory that a million monkeys hammering a million typewriters (or a hundred, or a thousand) will eventually (given sufficient time) bang out entire works of Shakespeare (or Dickens, or all the books) by complete accident. This is a vivid enough mental image that it gets referenced a lot in fiction. So to paraphrase what Greg is implying, he's basically saying here that even three idiots in a room full of objects can eventually accidentally succeed simply by trying EVERYTHING many many times. Hope that helps in some way?

    So excited for you as you get through the series. I happened to rewatch series 2 yesterday while I was sick and it's such a step up already from series 1 (and I loved series 1 from the get go) in production quality and just general comfort in the format where things have been worked out. The hardest thing is how short some of these early seasons are (2 and 3 especially only being 5 episodes is a shame!). As you mentioned others saying, this show was indeed a godsend over Covid. I rewatched it SO much and looked forward to every Thursday when a new episode would be uploaded. It's only been over the past week that I rewatched some of the earlier stuff again because I rewatched it so much back then!

    You mentioned The Full Monty...It is a fun,great film and actors you WILL recognize.
    Also, another under rated great film is Waking Ned Devine. It is a great heartfelt comedy of a sleepy town that involves winning the lotto. It is a great film and if I were your Patreon I would have you watch it. Just my two cents.

      Yeah, I had no idea that was the plot of Waking Ned Devine! I had only heard the title, and didn't know much about it. That sounds great! I don't know if anyone else has mentioned this, so apologies if they have, but I noticed a few times in your reactions you say things to the effect that the contestants are getting better at the tasks each episode. The tasks are all filmed out of order compared to when they are shown, and all filmed before the studio shows. That means any improvement in how people approach tasks is either accidental (a later task happening to be shown later) or imaginary :)
