Commuter review: 2007 Kawasaki ZZR600 (ZX600J)

  • Owner observations and a short city ride. An outstanding bike.
    Turn diameter is 18ft (5.5m), parking, U-turns are ok as a standard lane is 12ft (3.6m) wide. Fuel economy is 5.6-5.1L/100km in town/highway (42-46mpg US, 50-55mpg IMP)
    COMMUTER REVIEW TEST PARAMETERS:
    In commuting the following maneuvers are performed regularly:
    - U-turns at walking pace
    - pushing, parking, reversing the bike
    - 1st gear full acceleration for merging
    - 1st-2nd gear lane changes, avoidance path maneuvers
    - shoulder checks, mirror checks throughout the entire rpm range
    Bike is further evaluated to assess its:
    - possible interaction with corrosive road salting in winter
    - weather protection for winter riding
    - rider ergonomics, vibration, noise, visibility and ease of operation of controls
    - carrying capability (e.g. a lunchbox)
    - ease of access for maintenance items (chain/belt, oil, brakes)
    That`s how a bike is ridden, that`s how it`s assessed. The above list excludes wheelies, circus stunts, riding at speeds over speed limits, aggressive lean angle cornering.
    If a bike does not fit the description, so be it. If a model does not work out for commuter purpose, I`ll say so. My findings on how a bike performs are posted, irrelevant to manufacturer`s gift-wrapped sales pitch. I`m not a motorcycle journalist, I`m not paid to say nice things, kind things or things that increase sales. I just post what I find out. Facts.
    Thanks for watching.

    It's the exact same identical bike as the ZX6R 2002 model exact same bike they just called it a ZZR600 maybe for Insurance purposes cheaper it's definitely a sport bike. My brother had the 2002 ZX6R and wanted my fairings so we switched fairings he had the black and white and red I am telling everyone it's the same bike.. me and my brother have raced both bikes I get him he gets me i guess Whoever gets the 1st jump wins lol same bike people don't let a stick make you think it's different if I could post up the pictures you would understand.

    Hi, thanks for the review, I`ve had my `98 ZZR around 5 years and I love it,back in the day I used to ride a selection of tuned Kwak triples, my fave bike until I got the zzr.Its just like my H1B...with excellent handling.Its not a problem having lil legs either (29" inside leg), lol,because I lowered the seat at the front. I totally love this bike :)

      +stuntweasel27 Thanks for sharing. I replaced mine over time with a 2013 zx-6. I did not think they could improve this much over the zzr platform, changes to bike geometry are especially amazing. The best bikes I`ve ever had or ridden: zx-6 and zzr.

    all round after 45 years of riding - ZZR600 Kwaka is best bike ever made. 50-55mpg and the abilility to drag off a FireBlade. If riding like a vegetarian I get 70mpg. I do a minimum of 400km in any trip here in country South Australia... at 110kph or more.. and she is very comfortable even in ocean crosswinds. There are less thirsty bikes yea - but so slow it's fucking dangerous on freeways dude. It's heavy enough to handle crosswinds without me leaning sideways.. Suzuki's and Yam R6's are faster, but the Kwaka ZX6R is the perfect bike for anyone who actually rides

      Edwin Henry Blachford bullshit. You can’t say a bike that has a carburetor is the best kawa bike ever made...

    • @MJT-DA
      @MJT-DA 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      RockChalkPhX Yes you can most of the new bikes Honda make now are weaker than their old carburated ones. Same with Kawasaki because of Euro4 emissions bikes like the ninja 1000 have lost over 20hp!!! It's no longer a fast sport touring..

    In 2011 I bought a used 2008 ZZR600 with 1,494 miles on it. The odometer just turned 24k last November. My longest ride was a 1,435mi round trip from Tennessee to Michigan and back within 3 days. It was my first bike, and I will keep it though the Concourse 14 has peaked my interest.

    • @theoverengineer
      @theoverengineer  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +woaworks Nice. Thanks for commenting. The Concourse is 1.5 times the weight of the ZZR and could be 4 times the insurance cost. The weight helps with in-line stability and it`s way more streamlined.

  • @Mybwain
    @Mybwain 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Do you ride this bike in all weather? What country you in? What's the insurance costs like compared to other bikes of similar capacity?

    Been looking at getting one of these 2007 600 ZZR's so i can have a dual sport and a sport touring. But after this video I'm not sure if this is the one after hearing his complaints..
    My dual sport is a 2004 KTM 450 EXC and I can ride for an hour no problem with the stock seat and Attack graphics seat cover but will get a seat concepts soon just for the extra comfort. Also i have a GPR stabilizer which is set to 6.5 (goes up to the #8) and I have no vibrations in the handlebars or any problems with driving it. Absolutely love it

    • @theoverengineer
      @theoverengineer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I replaced it with a Ninja ZX-6R supersport bike, which I find to be a great bike, but finding the right bike is a different quest.
      Thanks for watching.

    Tks for sharing the video, sir. May I ask if it is no problem to ride it for like 3 or 4 hours? Is it reliable on long trips? And how many kilometers before lubricating the chain (I used to ride HD)?
    I am looking at a 1995 one, so the seat is a bit different than that of yours.

    • @theoverengineer
      @theoverengineer  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Saulo Silva My 2007 is extremely reliable, no problems on 8-hr-a-day rides. I never needed ANY service while I owned it, only regular maintenance (check chain, brakes, engine oil, coolant, air filter, spark plugs - all standard procedure).
      Kawasaki doesn`t make the chain. D.I.D or RK does. According to the chain manufacturer, chains are to be checked and lubricated every 400 mi (600km) except when riding in rain or dirt, then check daily, lubricate as needed.

    • @saulocpp
      @saulocpp 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      theoverengineer Thanks a lot for your feedback. I see most of these ZZRs are carburated. I had an 883 carb that never gave me any problems. When I switched to a fuel-injected FX, the injection module died when I was far from home. Again, thanks for your comment and ride safe.

    • @theoverengineer
      @theoverengineer  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Saulo Silva Yes, I liked the safety or comfort of lower level of mechanical complexity on the carburetted ZZR. Emission regulation updates got rid of the carbs. I do like clean air, too. Thanks for watching & sharing.

    i have carpal tunnel as well from ridin atv's and it really really sucks. Im getting one of these same exact bikes tommorrow and i hope it isnt much of a problem for my wrists but im sure it will be since on a bike you lean foward a lot more than on an atv

    • @theoverengineer
      @theoverengineer  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      For my carpal tunnel the single cylinder BMW 650 GS after 45 seconds! (seriously, I had to turn back and my test ride was over) - upright seating, arms close to horizontal. The Suzuki V-Strom 650 was MUCH better, but sucked after an hour of highway riding. The ZZR600 was better, sucks at low rpm in city traffic, no worries on the highway. Try a bunch of bikes (1, 2, 3, 4, 6-cylinders) at different speeds and padded palmed gloves, see what happens.

    Its my birthday today lol and I'm seriously considering taking my 98 suzuki katana 600 in on trade tomorrow. Katana has little over 9500 but runs very well. dealer is asking 2999 for a 05 zzr600 with 5000 miles and says its clean. no pics as they said they just put it away for winter storage but happy to show it to me. What do you think?

    • @theoverengineer
      @theoverengineer  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +usoohot Nothing wrong with an upgrade. You`ll have a sweet machine, 2005 is the last year Kawasaki upgraded the design, so the 2005 ZZR600 will be as modern as that line gets.

      Rob M Both look great, customized a bit. I recommend the 2007 zzr 600. (Unless you absolutely hate the choke.) It is newer, a lot less miles, so parts will be easier to find. It has a higher windshield for cold rides. Gearing ratios are better for street use.

    My 2007 zzr600 has spent 10% of its life on the road and 90% broken down in my garage. If one thing isnt broken its another. I follow all of the maintenance guides in the book but it doesnt matter. Its a great bike if you can get it running.
    Actually no its not a great bike, caused me nothing but headaches. Probably the worst purchase ive ever made in my life. Dont purchase a bike like this unless you just love old junkers and you love taking bikes apart 3 or 4 times just to get it running right.
    Anyone want to buy mine let me know.

    • @theoverengineer
      @theoverengineer  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Theonlypayne Wow. Thanks for sharing, sorry to hear your bad luck. What happened? Electrical? Mechanical? Engine? What`s the country code on its VIN label? Maybe others can chip in here, too, as this could equally be a widespread situation or a freak isolated incident.

    • @Theonlypayne
      @Theonlypayne 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      theoverengineer Still dont know whats wrong with my bike, it is still sitting in my garage. Trust me i have taken lots of advice on fixing it and nothing works. Because i am not a true mechanic, the only way to fix it at this point is to just throw money at a dealership and let them fix it and will probably cost more than the bike is worth.
      Hate this bike. Worst bike i have ever touched in my lifetime.
      Spent at least 3 hours in my garage today putting it back together and its still running like a 20 year old lawnmower.

      I have a 2007 ZZR 600, kept outside in the elements (under a cover.) I got it in the beginning of April, 2014...I only ride it two days a week, on my days off, and I've put just over 11,000 miles on it. She starts up with no problems every week...had to replace the fuel pump this past April, but that's just normal wear and tear...I love this bike. I also have a GREAT bike shop for service.
