  • IN THIS EPISODE: How to draw a character from the Warner Bros stable. Character designs based on the style of the studio or show you are working on at the time are really important. If you work at WB, you might be asked to draw a character that fits into one of their shows, and if you know what makes their characters unique and different from the other studios, you have a leg up on the other designers. Just break down the WB characters into basic shapes, and you can figure out what is needed for the show. Look at a lot of WB cartoons, and you will see what the characters have in common from a design sense, and you can design characters with the look of the studio in mind. There are many different eras of WB animation. If you like the classic style from the way back olden days of the 1930’s to 1950’s, you can pick a director you like and base your new designs on his old designs and make it your own. If you are a fan of Fritz Freling’s cartoons, you can study a few of them and draw characters in his style. Same with Chuck Jones and Robert McKimson and Bob Clampett. Each unit seems to have its own character designer to make each shared character look a certain way. If you like Tiny Toons and Animaniacs, there is a certain style for those cartoons as well. So give it a try, and enjoy the ride…
