    Hey Guys,
Today we are checking out the 12mp turret style security camera from Reolink. It’s model number RLC-1220A. That’s a lot of MP for less than $100US.
We’ll do a quick rundown of what’s in the box & the specs of this high megapixel device. We’ll also look at a few of the connectivity options. And of course, we’ll dive into some daytime & nighttime footage from various install locations. Lastly, we’ll do a water test on the camera and talk about bandwidth & storage.
Included in the box: Certifications, drill template, user manual, window stickers, network cable, weather sealing grommet, screws and anchors, and camera.
There are 3 leads attached to the camera; an RJ-45 network connection to plug the camera into your Network Video Recorder (NVR) or your home network. The next cable is a 12v DC connection. This camera does not come with a power adapter, but one could be used if you are unable to take advantage of the PoE port to power the device. The last cable is a reset button. To use it, press and hold for 10s while powering up the camera.
On the back of there camera is there a water tight door where you can install a micro SD card up to 256gigs. This will record motion only and not continuous footage. It can hold up to 72 hours of motion.
Just below the camera’s lens is the environment lighting sensor.
There is a small a hole just below the light sensor which is the camera’s microphone. There is no speaker on this camera.
Looking at the camera lens, it’s a 5mm fixed lens with a horizontal field of view of 67 degrees and a vertical view of 41 degrees. The 12mp CMOS sensor is 1/2.49 inches in size and can stream video up to 20fps at over 8000Kbps (kilobit).
Surrounding the lens, we have the LED night vision lights. They are rated for 30m or 100ft. We’ll test that in a bit.
The camera’s operating temp only goes down to -10 degrees C or 14F. At this point I have tested the camera well below this temperature without issues.
When plugging in a new Reolink camera into a Reolink NVR, the NVR picks up the device and adds it to its collection. The new camera is then available on all user interfaces without any action by you. This includes the NVR’s UI itself, the web user interface, the Reolink PC app and the Reolink mobile device app.
The 2nd option is the standalone method. All you need is the camera and a way to power the device. When accessing the camera using the mobile device app, it will automatically show up as a camera to be initialized. You can also access the camera over its web user interface, the PC app or a third-party camera management software like Blue Iris.
The first install location will be looking onto a large 300ft empty field. We review the daytime and night footage. We then set the camera up to look at the stars and I happen to capture the northern lights.
The 2nd install location is look onto my back deck. Again, we look at daytime and nighttime footage and also try out the camera’s mic with an audio test. Since my back deck lights turn on when it’s dark out, they provide sufficient lighting for the camera to work in color mode. We will also look at the stars and get a beautiful surprise from Lady Aurora.
The last install location is looking onto the driveway. We use a license plate to test the distance at day and night.
As a final test, we use a garden hose and spray the camera to ensure it will survive a large rain storm. The camera performed great and there were no issues with the excessive amount of water.
In the last section we discuss the camera’s network and HD usage to see how much data is being streamed. We also figure out how long it will take to fill a 1TB hard drive.
    Thanks for watching!

I much prefer Reolink bullet styled camera for the fact that they are still made from metal... I absolutely hate plastic CCTV cameras. They just don't stand a chance if someone tried to vandalise them.

I've been a Blue Iris user for years but was having so many issues using my Reolink cameras with it (i.e. glitches, audio/video sync issues, playback speed issues). I've spent many hours trying to optimize them to no avail. My Blue Iris PC is plenty powerful (i7-8700 with 32 GB of ram). It seems Reolink cameras and Blue Iris are NOT a good match. I have 20 Reolink cams. 10 of them are 4k, 9 are 5MP, and 1 is 3MP. Just bought a Reolink RLN36 NVR about a week ago and it's been working solid. It supports up to 36 cams. I'm able to run all of my cams at max bitrate and resolution without any problems. I love it! 🥰

I didn't know Reolink had a 36 channel NVR, so I looked it up... pretty cool. I too am having some glitches with Reolink on BI. Thanks for sharing

As you have long got the NVR this is no use to you but might help someone else...
Using BlueIris in "desktop" mode to monitor the CCTV seems to use significantly more CPU time than streaming to the web interface.
I am running BI in a fairly lightweight Windows VM on my TrueNAS server. When I bring up the live view via web I'm only running at between 22% and 27% CPU. When I open the VM desktop it stays about the same. But when I open the BI desktop application it varies between 50 and 70%. As soon as I close that down, back to the mid-20s.
I know many people use their BI servers as the viewer for their CCTV, so worth a mention in case someone thinks their BI server can't hack the task and is about to drop a load of money to build a new PC when all they really need is a tablet for everyday viewing!

The 820A is an 8mp sensor sadly, the only 12mp offering at this time is a RLC1212a. If you want better than this you'll have to shell out for HIKVision's most cutting edge 12-16mp offerings, those cost a lot.

How to extend between NVR and Camera line?

    • @HomeTechDIY
      @HomeTechDIY  ปีที่แล้ว +1

That depends on the distance between the camera and the NVR. 100m is a comfortable distance but anything over that might need an extender or even a PoE switch.

How can I view the IP cameras feed from a diffrent private network (using internete) using RIO app or a computer in the network. Do I need to configure any Port Forwarding or how does it work? Could you please give me your two cents here? By the way nice video.

    • @HomeTechDIY
      @HomeTechDIY  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

Thanks! I haven't tested it, but from what I understand, you can add multiple cameras or NVRs to the Reolink app from multiple locations. Add the devices to the app they way you would normally and they can be access from anywhere. No port forwarding is necessary.

I bought the bullet style version of this camera, RLC-1210A.
This caused me serious problems when connected to my Milestone installation. I even did a total re-install of the Server OS and Milestone trying to solve the issue.
First the camera OnVIF is not recognized by Milestone, newest device drivers did not help in regards to this.
Finally found that attaching the camera as a "universal camera" got picture and sound in the NVR but the software became unstable because of this causing the recording server to crash and restarting (automatically).
Newest FW on the camera did not help the situation.
So if you are running Milestone I do NOT recommend this camera.

What do you do with the reset button and the power cord if you're using the Poe. Will they not just end up dangling, is there any weather resistant caps that come with it. they seem kind of big to be hidden if you're mounting this on a wall and not going straight through the center base?

  • @19mati67

Why everybody goes with the highest megapixels(mistake)? Go with the biggest sensor(it is like going with a DSL camera). That way you have very good night time videos as well. These days the best for the money is 1/1.8" sensor.
