I have a really prestigious dream school, so I'm scared I would be an automatic reject but hopefullyyy not :') I mean I watched this vid and idt I possess any of these qualities... except my grades suddenly drop but hopefully it won't!

Does volunteer service count as extra curricular? Im only on the chess team and academics, but I help out at my church and around the community a lot. Would coming from lower class affect the application in a positive or negative way?
If we already listed our extracurricular activities on the common app should we list them again?
I’m at 27yo student transferring from a community college. Being that I have 2 kids, I never had much extra time to put into clubs and extra curricular activities. In my personal statement, I basically explained that I don’t have a list of extracurriculars because I was busy being a mom and providing for my family. I also explained how I think being a mom proves my leadership abilities. Do you think not being in any activities in my position would work against me?

I know people who didn't do any ECs because they were caring for their grandfathers and got into highly selective schools. You already proved yourself. Best of luck!

I'm not sure if you or anybody with college application review insight will see this, butI have hobbies that I simply couldn't pursue through my school, namely foreign languages. However, I did pursue these almost religiously through the latter half of middle school and all of highschool, and have several official certifications acknowledging my proficiency (mainly JLPT and TOPIK). My question here is: would these be seen as an a good replacement or alternative for extracurriculars? The way you portrayed it, extracurriculars are used to passion, dedication, etc.
But all things were closed or stopped during Covid - clubs, sports. So colleges should remember that when looking at extracurriculars.
Is it going to hurt my applications a ton if I made a couple of quotation errors such as putting the quotation mark before the period, rather than after? I definitely won’t be making that mistake in the future that is for sure.
No. I definitely don’t care about a couple of grammatical errors. I have to look up the quotation rules myself all the time.
my grades got kinda lower than my average grade during the covid period, do you think colleges would think of that as an acceptable reason for my low grades? also where do I explain significantly low grades in the common app?!

Great but doesn't address much. So everyone now goes and fills up the activities, gets 1600 on the SAT, and is captain of a chess club for 4 years. Now what? Colleges cannot take everyone. So what then separates the student who gets in from the one that doesn't? My experience in Admissions is that Admissions officers are looking for students with passion. Passion can only be seen from consistent patterns in their applications. Authencity separates the incoming Freshman from the rejected.
I worked about 45 hours/week all through highschool, I never got enough time to do any other extracurriculars, do you think the admissions would let me pass with 1 extra curricular being my 45 hr/wk job? I have like a 3.2 gpa
colleges sometimes say that u can actually put work as an extracurricular or fill it in the additional information box also would help because the colleges would totally understand that
My GPA got really bad ever since covid (currently 2.8 unweighted) but I have a few AP classes, honors, im secretary in a club and im trying to get a lifeguard job.
I mean im only a sophomore and im going to every tutoring program available- Would a high SAT score balance out my chances considering my GPA is below average?

Include that info in the additional info section. You can also list/describe in your college applications any independent learning/research you’ve done in lieu of extracurriculars if this is your situation.

what if i made two mistakes on my app. I put “governement” on my list of classes i’m taking currently and also used “apart” instead of “part” twice when describing my clubs. :/ will this affect my application a lot :/

Hey! I submitted my application, then noticed an error in my short essay (wrote “Rommie” instead of “roomie”), because I’m international and my English is not as perfect as Americans guys have. I’ve always been trained not to hold small spelling/grammar, such as the one you listed, against the applicant.

Not if your other academic factors are strong. If for instance your gpa or rigor is low though, submitting a high SAT score would help your app.

Most reading applications don’t retain formatting so you’re probably okay. If you submitted as a doc, I wouldn’t worry about it either...I’d just consider it a weird choice on the writer’s part and keep it pushing.

I get having a certain opinion and at the same time not trying to be offensive. For instance you claimed that being offensive in a transphobic or homophobic way, indangers other students. Is quite a certain way of putting it, because there are people out there who have a religious view or scientific view. Either being that the person applying lives by there religion and in their religious text they mention that being gay is wrong and they are not on board with it. Or that they scientifically think that transgenders are not what they claim to be considering the fact that their chromosomes are the same as well as their physical build being way different from what they claim they are. This not being really offensive intentionally, although some people with softer emotions getting offended by it is possible. But is this really offensive in this day and age? I mean people have a right to their religion and they also have a right and are entitled to there own opinions. But are people like you really going to deny them because of their opinions? When they are not intentionally trying to be mean and that’s just how they think and or practice their religion? I do not mean being intentionally mean or anything, I mean someone who simply states their opinion on certain topics or their religious values. Because for you or someone at a university to deny someone due to their opinions and religious values which they are entitled to even if someone is offended, is insane and kinda silly. Yes If someone is being intentionally mean or condescending and bad in their essays, then I could get them being rejected. But for simply having an opinion and being rejected is pretty bad and intolerant of the university or college of you ask me.
Ok but if they felt that way what would be the point of writing about that in their college essay? It wouldn’t make any sense in a personal statement to write about something or someone whom they dislike. It would only cast a negative light on the applicant, on top of being potentially offensive.
