    Q: "What is that metal mold?"
    A: The soldier and accessory molds are from the Mattel ThingMaker line from the 1950s.
    Cosclay TIPS for SUCCESS on your first try:
    - Bake it at the RIGHT TEMP, for the right time: 275°F (135°C) for at least 30 minutes per ¼”
    - Don't bake it at the WRONG TEMP! (LOL! I know it's redundant, but Cosclay will NOT be strong unless baked at that HIGHer temp for long enough.)
    - Don't be afraid of crumbly clay; it's easy to re-condition.
    - Don't flex the part right after removal from oven. Let sit and cool before flexing. (Bending fresh out of the oven can easily cause a split/tear.)
    - Consider WET-SANDING. This will not only cut down on little breathable particles floating around, but it will reduce surface drag which is helpful on the semi-rigid material.)
    - Know that you can add fresh Cosclay, to cured Cosclay and BAKE AGAIN.

      My old friend Crafsman,
      I have a question that I've been wondering about for about for nearly two years .....what happened to the video where you showed off your camera collection? Did I imagine it? It was from waaaaaay back I believe, but I loved it. I don't know........ it was calming I suppose and one of the early days when I discovered your channel. But now, I can't find the video anymore no matter what I type in (btw your video on EXPOSURE basics I am ashamed to admit I've probably watched 20 times lol 😆).
      Anyway, best wishes to you and your family and save me some fig preserves and I'll send you a Virginia ham and some gravy 🤣

      @@justsomeguy9325 Hey buddy! :D My first thought was the "Things I like" video.
      But if I'm recalling right, where I showed off the most old cameras was in the video about recording sound effects:
      th-cam.com/video/7yuo4ALLz2A/w-d-xo.html
      Let me know if that ain't it and I'll try to find it! :)

      @@TheCrafsMan Thanks so much for replying. This wasn't the one I was thinking of but that's totally fine because I really like that video too. ......then again, I like everything you put out LOL. Also, as you've been re-releasing the older unlisted videos I'm sure the one I was thinking of will turn up, and if it doesn't then 🤷🏿‍♂️ no worries at all, there's PLENTY of great stuff on this channel 😁.

    Oh man those molds from Mattel bring back memories. Back from a time when kid toys could be dangerous. They are Thing Maker molds which had you injecting melted plastic.

    • @TheCrafsMan
      @TheCrafsMan  2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Oh mannnnn, I wince thinking about some of the toys from back then. LOL! I never had the really dangerous stuff but heard all about the old chemistry sets with chemicals that you can't get (and don't WANT) now. :)

    • @modelermark172
      @modelermark172 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Those vintage Mattel molds shown in the thumbnail are what first caught my attention to this video. I had one of those Mattel "Fighting Men" Thingmaker sets when I was about eight. I still can't believe I was allowed to mess around with dangerous stuff like that as a kid. I also helped my older cousins who cast toy soldiers out of lead(!) on their kitchen stove . . . .
      As an aside, I remember that the tank you could make out of the provided camouflaged cardstock and detailed with parts made from the molds looked more like the 21st Century M1 Abrams that was still years away from being designed, than the Vietnam-Era M48 - M60 Patton series in use when this toy was new. No doubt this was because it was easier to make flat sided paper models than ones needing to simulate cast, compound curves, but still . . . .

    I had that Mattel Thingmaker soldier mold as a kid! It definitely was designed to have wires put in to make a bendable. The ones they supplied were very thin and tended to break after a few bends though. You should try to get a hold of some old SuperGoop, the liquid plastic you'd squirt into the mold and bake on the little hot plate. It also cured flexible but was just a single liquid in a bottle. You also might like their creature and monster molds for future projects!

    Baby oil works just as well as softener (I have my suspicions it’s the same thing in the clay softener bottles) and if it gets too sticky cornflower works wonders.

    • @koinijikoimizu
      @koinijikoimizu 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Some clay softeners *are* just liquid plasticizers vs baby oil which is pretty much mineral oil. You're totally right about corn flour/starch being helpful but too much can cause the clay to become brittle after baking as it can leech out the plasticizers inside.

    I LUV Ya back! Have since your beginning videos. That chirping bird reminded me of one of your first videos (for me) of how to transfer a picture of a bird onto a wooden plank (pretty sure it was a wood plank...could be wrong...I'm getting old).
    Boy oh boy, your videos have become smoother, the sound is EXTRAORDINARY, but your heart still shines through. I'm never gonna do any plastic molding stuff, but I love watching you do it and listening to the explanations. I remember you showed your sound booth, which confuses me. If you are recording your voice separate from what you're videoing (wrong word?), how do they match up so good? It is a mystery! Maybe Mr. Eugene could explain it to me. Tell him I miss him. Would be cool if he was sitting on the stairs of your cabin waitin for us at the beginning of each video.

    Also, I'm so sorry that the air dry clay from the beginning gave you such problems. Air dry/Cold porcelain/resin clay does tend to dry out fairly fast (and shrink a little after drying/setting or even mildewing) so it's good for immediate use projects vs those you'll work on for a bit and then come back to later. Also, those molds were amazing and the figures were adorable! Loving your channel, thanks for sharing!

      It is possible to make a figure out of this stuff. The KEY for maximum cured material performance comes with the baking. It has to be at that higher temp for at least 30 minutes. Additional baking reportedly makes the pieces more durable.

    I have a request for you CrafsMan... Or a challenge if you're up for it.
    I'd like to find a way to make an object for molding. Make it a large piece at first, but you use a solution that will eventually shrink it down to a smaller size. Say you want to make a pendant with really fine detail (but its impossible to do with just standard sculpting tools), so on the main piece that you do the work on it is twice the size of the final product. You make a "big" mold of that object and you inject the "shrink" solution material for it to shrink it down after you take it out of the mold.
    Once its shrunk you will have an object that retains all the lovely details (only smaller) and you can use that to make the final "small" mold for the final product.
    I know the solution to do this is out there though I forgot what it is called. It was years ago when I researched it. I think its something similar to resin, but as it settles it begins its shrinking process.
    I hope that all made sense. I love your material. Keep on craf'in on!

      Hey there! This is possible.
      The closest thing I've done to it on my channel involves the shrinking and growing of silicone molds using things like Mineral Spirits or Smooth-On NOVOCS.
      So the way it might would work in this case is:
      - Sculpt your piece at a comfortable size, focusing on all those nice details.
      - Mix your silicone (for this specific task, I like Mold Star 15 Fast) with Odorless Mineral Spirits (or NOVOCS).
      - Use this silicone mixture to pour up your mold.
      - Once cured, de-mold and let the silicone shrink.
      NOTE: Results can change depending on whether or not you do a 1-part or 2-part mold.
      Two-part shrinking silicone molds can be iffy as far as registration of both parts when shrunk.
      (It's not always totally uniform. So this is can work better with organic than uniform/precise shapes.)
      Here's my video breakdown of the process: th-cam.com/video/P6fnGUL307U/w-d-xo.html
      Hope this helps!

    You brought up armatures right as I was wondering if you tried doing them.
    The intro/outro made you look like you were held hostage in the Backrooms.
    This was an interesting experiment. Glad you’re getting closer to your dream goals Crafsman. 🍻

    I need to try that foil over the clay technique. Scorched clay is a thing.
    Any thoughts if the baked clay is stable enough to use against abs? Got the potential for repairing toys that might “melt”.

    • @TheCrafsMan
      @TheCrafsMan  2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Oh man, I realize I probably should have explained what that was even about. :/ But absolutely, these days I don't bake any clay without a "foil tent". :)
      Hrm... I like how you think. I cannot say yet whether that would work, but I can say the toughness of the clay really happens when it's baked at a high enough temp for at least 30 minutes, as far as getting some resilience out of it to at least somewhat compare to the ABS.
      As far as FLEX (I wasn't sure if "stable enough" meant toughness or firmness), that all comes down to thickness. Extra thin pieces are super flexible, while thick pieces may have hardly any flex. Hope this is useful! Thank you for watching.

    You should check out a modelling channel called North of the Border. Very good builds and funny sense of humour. He uses a variety of clays including cos clay so you might get an idea of how to utilise different types 😃

    Wow! I was just thinking "I wish I had a cheap moldable squishy rubber/plastic for gaskets!" The gasket glue's so pricey and silicone isn't durable enough. This "CosClay" might just be just what I need! Plus I could use it for lots of other things beyond gaskets.

    Crafsman I believe you shot the intro and outro scenes on a real VHS camcorder. Most "VHS" effects filters I've seen don't get the color-under resolution, noise, or bottom row distortion correct.
