    Adding petroleum jelly to the clay to soften or smooth it will affect the strength of the clay so that is probably why it is cracking and crumbling. Use clay softener to soften the clay or isopropyl alcohol to smooth fingerprints away.

      Yeah I know this... but forget things. Thanks.

    • @kurogiza
      @kurogiza 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      I agree. If the clay is too stiff, try to use mineral or baby oil instead to soften it, and make sure to knead to thoroughly. That way you won't get layers of clay separated by Vaseline, which can then shear off.

    Hey man, I use that stuff too. Let me share the baking trick with you.
    So, put the mini in the oven while its cold, start heating the oven with the mini inside once it's up to temp (whatever your clay requires)
    Bake for the duration you need (time*x-per 1/4 inch of thickness, usually 15min)
    Then, turn off the oven and let the mini cool down in the oven, you can crack the oven open if you like, but let it cool in the pven at least 30min.
    Lastly, sculpey is good, but Fimo is better.

    Lots of skill you have.
    I'd like to see an episode in which you build with junk (perhaps a vehicle of some kind) and making a sculpt with the soft thing that gets hard the more you fiddle with it (perhaps the driver, or victim on the receiving end of the vehicle).

    Very strange that your minis break this easy. I never had this problem with any polymer clay I used. Do you preheat the oven? If you preheat, the material can get thermal shock, and when you put it in the cool oven it can overheat until it gets to the adjusted temperature. So maybe you need to put something under the mini that helps to equalize the heat. Also you can try to leave it in the oven until it cools down. But that is ridiculously long time.
    The sculpts are great! My favorite is the spaghetti monster. But Arnie Fishman is cool too! Do you know where can such people be found besides Innsmouth? Maybe in some sewers? :D

    Thickness and the material of the wire you use matter when it comes to making armature, for bits bots something flexible and thinner is better, but for something meant to be solid I found a thicker steel wire (about 0.8mm diameter) gives a stronger structure that's less prone to bend after you put your sculpting material on it, just be weary that you won't be able to bend it by hand as easily, in fact if like me you have big dumb fingers it can leave a bit of a mark if you try to do that. Though my experience with armature is mainly with greenstuff, don't know how it'd work with polymer clay, in this regard I wanted to ask, do you use your kitchen oven for "cooking" the clay or do you have an oven made specifically for these things?

      I use the kitchen oven. And yeah, the armature was too flexible. Thanks for the tips

    Try "Apoxie Sculpt" if you want an almost indestructible result. Rock hard...
    Green stuff is great too. Stiff and slightly rubbery resilience when cured.
    Super Sculley is always a bit fragile and doesn't take a lot of handling too well.
    Keep up the dad jokes :)

    Check out Cosclay the next time you want to make something out of polymer clay. It cures flexible you could make the most incredible spaghetti monster and it would never fall apart. And fine fine since I actually made a comment I guess I’ll subscribe as well…

    Nice mini's! Maybe covering them in UV resin or something will make them less brittle. No idea if that works, just trying to add my brain to this

    Hello Bill, been wanting to do my own mini's for a while. And watched your video before this time so no cockups hopefully. Had super sculpy and fimo for ages but never had the balls to give it a go. You are an inspiration.
    When you say 'tin foil' do you mean aluminium foil? Also, is the armature wire aluminium as well? And what were the bead eyes made from for fish man?

    • @BillMakingStuff
      @BillMakingStuff  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Aluminium foil. Armature wire (not sure). Bead eyes were rhinestones, but I'd use ball bearings if you can.

    Love your stuff Bill. Only 2.53 into the vid - hate to break it to you, but the bunch of sticks/resilient people metaphor aka "fasces" (bunch of sticks in Etruscan/Roman times) was Il Duce/Mussolini's iconography- hence fascism. Are we witnessing the birth of a new bead-dominated age?

    Hi Bill, quick question, where do you get the really thin armature wire? I've been to craft shops, art shops, even hardware stores and the smallest stuff they have is only 1/16. I'm thinking the only way I can get thinner is if I order it on line (and I hate doing that). Thanks very much for any info dude, have a good one 👍🏻

    I accidentally started another video about setting micro diamonds while yours was playing...and the two were oddly synchronized. Like mythological "Dark Side Of the Moon" and "The Wizard Of Oz" synchronicity. I thought you were obscuring the bit about you using real diamonds instead of "beads" as a joke. Until you got to the part about the new tool, and the b%tt crack. Yeah. It still sort of fit mind you, because he had started excising around a piece. Anyway, came here from The Crafsman. Cheers!
