Regarding Nausicaa's strange love for insects, I feel like actually Miyazaki was before his time in terms of ecology. In the last few years we've begun to see and understand the important role that insects play in ecosystems, often being cornerstone species and pollinators of the planet, such as bees, wasps, etc. They may not all be beautiful themselves, but through their existence we get the beauty of plants, flowers, trees; species who eat bugs survive on these insects. Miyazaki's point here is that nature doesn't require beauty to function: it's us as humans who place such importance upon beauty, but nature doesn't exist solely for our aesthetic appreciation. There is beauty in the existence of ugliness
What you write reminds me of the Japanese art of Kintsugi.... something broken can still be beautiful. I suppose one could argue that without ugliness... beauty wouldn't exist.
There's a very good reason why Miyazaki opted to have repulsive insects as creatures as opposed to more common cutsie things. One of the main theme of the movie is cohabition with nature and being part of it, and Nausicaa's character is one of the very few who can look at the poison forest and the insects and understand that it has its place and has the same right to exist as anything else - people shouldn't be at war with something that's the result of natural evolution. Especially considering that, while at first glance the poison forest and its caretakers, the insects, seem utterly unhospitable and dangerous, it is revealed that it is in fact cleansing the Earth from of the man-made pollution of the past - so in other words its existence is completely essential to restore the Earth and therefore ensuring the survival of its inhabitants, people included. But of course one may feel at odds coexisting with something so off-putting and so toxic, but that's the point, you have to look past that and fully understand the nature of things to get the bigger picture. If you stop at the shallow surface and appareances, you might just forsake your very salvation.

I'd even go as far as to say that this movie is DECADES ahead of its time. I can't imagine any studio making a movie like this without watering it down, changing its tone, or destroying it's soul.

I'm still making my way through all his movies, but this movie stands out from the others.
Nice reaction and dope commentary! I'm just as dumbfounded as you when I think about the fact that this movie is almost 40 years old. This is insane. To me, unconsciously, the 80s were still 20 years ago lol.

There is a theory that this took place on Mars and not Earth, thus the gravity is lighter and allow huge ships to fly around.
