      I've not actually seen anyone take the Inside aesthetic and apply it to their own work. Was that even from Inside, or is that visual storytelling trick taken from somewhere else? However you came about that look, are you planning to keep it in-repertoire for other projects, or was it just a one-off visual experiment for this?
      Favorite joke: "what is this Russian experimental film I just stumbled upon!?"
      But favorite *random thing*: I love that your reference for giant bug sizes casually includes Subarus. Not a specific Subaru, just the entire brand. To quote your own script style: what a whacky unit of size to use in the Comedic DMotta Cinematic Universe.

    The Miyazaki epics are: Nausicaa, Castle in the Sky, Princess Mononoke, and Spirited Away. I HIGHLY recommend Castle in the Sky since you like the vibes of the other two. Also, it took me a long time to understand Kiki's. It's about recovering from burnout caused by being unappreciated in your passions.

    • @0FynnFish0

      I'd count Howls Moving Castle towards the epics too.
      And then we have the other more adult-friendly category, which are the quiet, underappreciated ones. Grave of the Fireflies, Whisper of the Heart, When Marnie was here etc.

      @@0FynnFish0Also When the wind rises! And from up on poppy hill! There's also Only Yesterday and while I did enjoy that film and relate to the mc somewhat I feel like that one is for a VERY specific audience. That being people that were born in the 70's in Japan. Though I think others can enjoy it too. The whole thing is about a woman who's almost 30 remincing about her childhood and I think that's universally relatable it's all the little personal things and references to the time period that leave it a bit dated but it's good. It feels like a time capsule centered around a specific persons life.

    As for this movie appearing unfinished, if you watch the end credits you do see somewhat of a resolution of the immediate crisis. We see the attacking forces being escorted out of the Valley of the Wind, which is being rebuilt. We see Nausicaa training the next generation of wind riders. We can infer a period of peace. But as we know from the real world, the larger story is never truly over. In Spirited Away we don't get to see how Haku confronts Yubaba and what happens to LIn. In Princess Mononoke we don't get to see if Iron Town and the Forest ever manage a sustainable arrangement, or what becomes of Ashitaka. In Castle in the Sky we never learn what the consequences were of the destruction of Laputa or whether Pazu ever went back to the mines or what he and Sheeta found when they visited her home country after the events of the movie. In Porco Rosso the ending narration by Fio only hints at how Porco might have met up with Gina in her garden during the day. Every good story seems unfinished in a sense because it gives the viewer something to imagine at the end. Endings like "and the they all lived happily ever after" are uniquely unsatisfying.

    • @avengefullgirl95

      Even the books for Nausicaa ended a bit without an ending, it extends beyond what the movie did, you meet more characters but the last scene essentially says "there are rumours of what happened to nausicaa but no one actually knows,"
      There is a bit of cultural influence of this way of story telling, but it also feels like Miyazaki always wants to leave room for more of a journey than an ending

    The manga for this is possibly my favorite book of all time. This movie is great, but the manga is just in a whole different league of incredible, and I wish so badly we'd gotten a mini series that could have explored everything, instead of the VERY condensed/revised version we got in this movie.

    • @JPrimavera3
      @JPrimavera3 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Admittedly it's been a long time since I've read/seen either. But from what I remember the movie was actually quite true to the manga, it's just that it only told about 1/6th of the story. Does that sound about right?

    • @kitts675
      @kitts675 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Yeah, it's mostly true to the very beginning of the story, just without a lot of the world building, which would have helped this movie make more sense to a casual viewer. The biggest difference is that the giant warrior wasn't in this part of the story. He shows up much later, so they clearly just added him here so that they could have him in the movie, which made him very unnecessary to the story, he just shows up only to melt away without doing anything, and adding him cut out more of that time they could have devoted to a more cohesive story...I still love the movie, but it can be pretty confusing and leave you feeling like there was supposed to be more...

    Nausicaä is so underrated. I think it's because the movie didn't have a Disney dub, so it got much leas traction in the West than it did in Japan. I 100% understand your Miyazaki rankings. Naussica was a huge part of the conversation when Mononoke was released and San is considered Naussicas spiritual successor! Both movies have a realism that while still scifi/fantasy provide a sense of urgency that isn't present in more "fairytale" type movies like Spirited Away and Howls Moving Castle and Ponyo.
    Most men who aren't into Shojo don't "get" Kiki's Delivery Service so I'm not surprised you didn't like it, but it's significant because it's one of the first movies to treat girlhood as something ppwerful to be respected and the journey of self discovery that folks need to take in order to become a woman involves sacrificing something so special. It's wistful and it's popular because of that rare theme. Another show that is notable for recognizing this is Madoka Magica, which is more popular with men.

    • @teapots_and
      @teapots_and ปีที่แล้ว +9

      yess absolutely I like your explanation about Kiki! I was so surprised to hear someone hates it, because it's on top of my favourites, but then I realised that the /being in a new place, art and painting, art block (and witch block(?)), listlessness and wanting to find friends/ parts of the story speak to me so much personally, that I can't help but love it so..
      I think it's great how the Ghibli *favourites* differ so much from person to person :)

    • @TheMusicalNight
      @TheMusicalNight 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Yeah, I wasn't surprised when Danny said how much he disliked Kiki's and won't even see Ponyo. I love both those movies but I really don't think he'd enjoy Ponyo. Both are very "Magical Slice of Life". Not sure how he'd feel about Totoro. That has more of a possibility of him liking it a little, but can't really say for sure one way or another. Whisper of the Heart and Only Yesterday he definitely wouldn't like.

    It isn't finished. Miyazaki wanted to make this movie, but at that point you just did not get the approval for an Anime Mocie from your Studio (This is before Ghibli) if there wasn't an existing Manga to back it up.
    So, he sat down and he wrote a Manga. Its _much_ more detailed and this movie is kind of only a snippet. I know he wanted to make a second one, but this one sadly underperfomed immensly and so it got scraped. But if you want to read the Manga, I'm sure youd find it enjoyable!

    I'd explain it like this: Spirited Away, Howl's, and also Kiki and Totoro are family-themed, or maybe rather relationship-themed. They're more about the main character's inner journey and growth and about understanding the importance of all kinds of relationships. Trust, selflessness, caring, encouragement and also sometimes gentle criticism, can all be summed up as the kind of support that the characters need to accept but also to share if they want to grow and overcome their challenges. It's also not only shown between the main characters but also the characters around them, showing how all these things apply to friendships, parent-child-relationships, new and established romantic relationships, etc.
    Nausicaa and Mononoke are about the characters's journey vs the environment they live in. In the other movies, the worlds they live in are devices to help them grow. In Mononoke and Nausicaa, it's about survival, how to survive, how to help those close to you to survive, how to extend this knowledge and skill to strangers and to eventually find ways to adapt to the environment and find balance, so the characters can go from surviving (as in fighting for their existence, just meeting the bare minimum, as opposed to thriving) to living as a part of the world. Mononoke is even more on the nose with this. Sure, the characters grow and learn, too, but they're mostly established in their personalities while characters like Chihiro, Kiki, and Sophie are either in limbo with their personalities and who they are as a person or relatively blank slate. Mononoke, Ashitaka, and Nausicaa (and their morally grey antagonists) already have very strong personality traits and their journey is about using their personality traits to learn new things and find better ways to deal with their worlds (which include spirits, magic, destruction, wars, industrialisation, post-apocalyptic scenarios, etc. depending on which movie we watch).
    And yeah, it absolutely comes down to taste and/or mood. I know enough people who prefer the "us against the world we created" types of movies on a normal day but when really sick or stressed, really appreciate a story about a little witch who realizes that the pretty world she lives in isn't always as wholesome as her sheltered home and who has to learn to become more confident, accepting, and to sometimes find help in the strength and support of friends and (adopted) family 😁

    It might seem surprising that a hayao miyazaki film has action in it, but the thing is that its actually more common than it seems. Hayao miyazaki's most popular films are usually the more ethereal type (my neighbor totoro, kiki's delivery service etc) from what i've seen. I personally think his best works are his more underrated and action packed works like
    Porco Rosso
    Castle in the sky
    It would be very cool to see a reaction of one of these two movies if not both
    Also castle in the sky and naausica have a bunch of cool similarities!

      edit: the story about no cuts is that harvey weinstein wanted to cut princess mononoke in the dub but ghibli producer toshio Suzuki sent a sword with the words "no cuts"

    So fun fact, the reason that this movie feels unfinished is that the us HEAVILY edited it. Like borderline took a meat cleaver to it. It actually spurred a fun story that after Miyazaki saw the butchering they put Naussica through, and knowing the US was doing Princess Mononoke next, he sent the studio a sword with a simple message. "No Cuts"

    I'm so glad you reacted to this one! This is my favorite along with Mononoke, but the manga of this is probably my favorite work of science fiction ever (better than Dune!). I think the comment about it not feeling finished is entirely valid, but also, this movie is only based on the first two of the seven volumes of the manga and at the point when he made this film, I think only the beginning of the manga had been written. As the story continues, it becomes far darker and more complicated with some absolutely astounding world building and visuals; it took him 12 years to craft and it really shows. If you enjoyed this film, and especially if you enjoyed Mononoke, I would recommend it, and I'm not someone who's always like "READ THE MANGA," I don't read a lot of it, but this was a truly astounding work of art. Thanks for your reaction, it was very entertaining!

    Nausicaa's Movie is about a fifth of the original.
    The ending is, as Danny Motta thinks, a story towards the apocalypse.
    Hayao Miyazaki's students have advised him to make a movie of the story, but it seems that for Hayao Miyazaki himself, this is a thing of the past.
    He seems to have a strong desire to make a completely new movie.
    The original Nausicaa manga is very interesting, so please read it!

    There has been some articles about Miyazaki’s, and Japanese storytelling in general, preference for open ending. Firstly it reflexes how real life doesn’t have conclusions. The battle, or balance, between human civilization and nature will not end. Secondly it causes the story to linger on in our mind. Our mind naturally wonders and attempt to fill in the gaps. I haven’t seen ‘s in a while so I can say anything about it’s ending but with Princess Mononoke you can envision different scenarios as to what Ashitaka and San get up to, to bridge the relationship between Iron Town and the forest. As for Nausicaa, the movie might have also ended abruptly as a way to entice people to read the manga too.
    Analysis aside. What a great intro. Danny and everyone else from the recording, editing, video, and custom designing did a splendid job. I wouldn’t mind having this intro as a part of my playlist. I think with a little more coaching and practice, Danny, you could post even more wonderful music video if you wanted to.
    You also do such a good job balancing comedic and insightful commentary. I hope everyone’s feedback will motivate you to do more.
    Thanks.

    Talking about dark and depressing movies, a good one from ghibli films is "Children who Chase Lost Voices". I don't see a lot of people talk about it to the point I thought it was a fever dream until looking it up recently. Super good, the animation fooled me, thinking it was on my age level but in fact was not and was super dark and a little bit twisted with cool monsters and stuff to go with it. Just a recommendation.
