What is Deertongue?

  • Deertongue is a component seldom seen in modern pipe tobacco. Pre-1970s, it was commonly used in tobacco products to provide a pleasant, vanilla-like aroma. Join Jeremy Reeves as he explains how we're working to keep this traditional component alive in a selection of our masterfully blended tobaccos like Crooner, Gentleman Caller, and Engine #382.

    I wasn't expecting the significant beard trim Jeremy, but it looks sharp.

    I opened up some aged gentleman caller a couple of weeks ago and it is delightful. I wish it was sold in bulk.

    I love that this video has just come out. For the past month I’ve been hooked on crooner and couldn’t find many videos discussing deer tongue.

    I absolutely love deer tongue. I really wish you sold it as a blending component. I'd love to be able to add some here and there to other blends.

    I picked up a quarter pound of Crooner after getting an estate pipe that had some unburned tobacco left in the bottom. I smelled it and instantly recognized it from two places, A. pipe tobacco, and B. the inland forests in the low country.
    Walking in the forest or down a country road, sometimes I would catch a whiff of this same smell. I also had a walking stick I cut from a tree and stripped the bark from. Could never figure out what tree it was but I always thought I was smelling the tree. Now I suspect it was actually deertongue every time I thought I smelled the tree again.
    It's probably dumb to buy 4 oz when trying it for the first time but something tells me it's going to be a winner.

    Crooner is a solid blend; indeed. I do have your Gentleman Caller in my collection yet unsmoked, but I am sure it will be delightful. Deer Tongue brings a unique sweet-spicey note to the flavor I totally agree. Generally, it has a lighter vanilla, clove/minty type nuance.

    Nice beard trim, Jeremy!
    I had been a bit skeptical about deertongue. Not really a vanilla aroma fan. I ordered Crooner in my last order. I have had to limit my
    smoking of the blen as I only ordeted a 2 oz. tin.I have dedicated a zksywoodie to the blend. What I found, though, is that I get a cinnamon note both from the tin and while smoking. I put cinnamon in my coffee so that turns out great!. Thank you for this video.

    Nice little overview! I've never tried deertongue before but I may have to give Crooner a try now! One blend I'd really like to see you spotlight at some point is Winchester. Much like Pegasus it's a blend that is one of the very best in Cornell & Diehl's entire lineup but doesn't get enough attention, if you ask me.

    I had no idea what deertongue smelled like until I opened up a tin of Crooner. My mind immediately went to times I’ve been hiking on a warm spring day, when I’ve pulled weeds in the backyard, or planted plants in a garden and smelled that exact same aroma. I realized then that I’ve been smelling deertongue all along, I just didn’t know what it was. A sweet, earthy, vanilla/cinnamon/pine is how I’d describe it.

    So that’s what that secret flavor is in Mixture 79 I believe. I think that may be what those flakes are that I always assumed was Bright Virginia

    Reminds me of the smell of erasers from grade school. I always keep some on hand for those rare moments when I get a hankering.

      "Grade school erasers" reminds me of my fifth grade teacher, Sister Barthola.
      At classroom range, she was a regular Joe Namath, delivering bullet-like head shots with dusty, felt chalkboard erasers.

      @@richardwernig8938 to clarify, I was referring to pencil erasers, not chalkboard erasers. Similar memories of Catholic school though.

    I like Gentleman Caller myself. Crooner has too much nic for me and I like that GC is more of a blend than Crooner. Also, my gf likes the aroma.

  • @UncleBurntApostrophe
    @UncleBurntApostrophe 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Yeah, only had one bowl of Crooner a while back, and only tobacco had to date that was disgusting, LOL!
    Tasted like excruciatingly sweet/sour sherbet, and was basically unsmokable…
    Will give it another shot at some point I’m sure, but naturally haven’t been particularly eager to revisit and just found other things to smoke so far😅

    • @UncleBurntApostrophe
      @UncleBurntApostrophe 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Well, glad you motivated me to revisit Crooner- just did, and almost like night and day!!
      That sweetness still detectable, but relegated to much more background and condiment now and a nice, different smoke…dunno went happened first time, but definitely seems to have become ‘acquired’ now- didn’t expect such a big turn around but there you go!✌️

      Yes, more so than any other blend I'm aware of. You absolutely need to dedicate a pipe to deertongue blends, otherwise you'll ruin your normal tobacco pipes. I would recommend a cheap M.M. cob to try it out and see if you like it.
