Tobacco Selections: Black Cavendish

- Black Cavendish is a true chameleon among pipe tobacco blending components and corresponds to a method of processing rather than a specific varietal of leaf. Through a combination of heat and steam, Cavendish actually can be created from a range of components, including Burley, Virginias, or even cigar leaf. And while often falsely associated solely with Aromatics, Cavendish is often used in a variety of mixtures as a "thickener." Like flour in a roux, the dark leaf can enhance the mouthfeel of the smoke and help bind the nuanced flavors from other components for a more cohesive, consistent flavor. On this episode of Tobacco Selections, our head blender Jeremy Reeves puts some of these myths to bed with a detailed discussion of some of the main types of Cavendish we use in our blends, along with some great recommendations for expanding your own palate. Sam’s Blend is an amazing example of using black cavendish
It really works well in Pegasus. I find that it helps spread the cocoa flavors around really well. Almost giving it a slight coffee note with the cocoa. I also find that it helps give blends an aged quality to the flavor too along with small amounts of perique. I never turn down a blend with it because I know it's definitely there for a reason.

Going on six months I rediscovered pipe smoking. Tried when I was younger, lasted about two weeks but Airborne life didn't really give the time for that.
I found channels on YT and Odysee, saw the "mountains" of blends and tobacco Pipes on these peoples shelves...and thought "That is excessive." I had my first Dr Grabow rusticated Omega and a meerschaum Sultan Head I had purchased for my dad (collected everything) back in 1985 while deployed in Turkey.
Four to five months later...I have roughly 22 jars of different tobaccos and eleven pipes...looking for more...lol Finding out letting most tobaccos age a little makes them better...and different pipes make the difference for different blends....Now I get it...

I’m a baby pipe smoker and have been smoking mostly black cavendish. I’d like to mature my palate to enjoy other varieties. I enjoyed this video.

My holiday workshop makes a holiday black Cavedish candle for our bathroom candles designed
to clear strong odors after large rich meals. It cuts through the most toxic fumes and seems to help
scrub the air before the fan draws the air out.
Always interesting......I blend at home and I use your tobaccos often. I use several kinds of cavendish and in different amounts and get excellent results with it. It almost always takes away the rough edges as you say. Keep up your videos they are very educational. The blends you sell and mention in your videos make it more interesting because your catalog is so vast!

A cigar seller who happened to have some leftover pipe tobacco on hand, gave me a special blend of Dark/Black Cavendish which has become my favorite ever since. I love the sweetness. Paired with Virginias, I always enjoy it.
Do you have any Dark Cavendish base blends you make that you're proud of? Something you sell that's sweet but has good aromatics?
Dans devils holiday has alot of it in it. Its a large percentage with Virginias
Without brokering trade secrets, what I would really like to know is percentages - of the Black Cav, or of the Latakia. If not percentages, then maybe ounces per pound, as you mention here … your blending skill is amazing, but … and this is MY problem … many of the C&D blends taste so similar to one another, and reviews are so all over the map, that it would be lovely to have some buyers-oriented information on how to choose; money does not grow on trees.
Also, would be nice to know the ‘effective’ difference between heat, steam and pressure!
i tend to avoid black cav when it comes to blends that are non aromatic. ill reconsider now. now that i know.

Where does one get the Dominican black cavendish? While smoking pipes.com has the Kings Stride, nothing comes up for Dominican black cavendish. Is there a brand name or a supplier that handles that?
What is the difference between stoved and cavendish?
I almost have to smoke to fast and hot before I get any flavor profile for most tobacco is that unusual ?
When I first started pipe smoking I had that problem too, because I regularly smoke cigarettes.
It leads to a vicious circle because the heat destroys the real flavor of the tobacco and you only get an unpleasant sharp taste beyond a certain temperature.
Try to slow your self down and really focus on the taste you get when smoking cool and slow.
After a few bowls you really start getting all the different flavors you’ve missed before.
Your palate will develop more and more after time and you learn what to look for.
Also filtered pipes tend to destroy the taste of especially natural tobaccos (in my opinion at least), so don’t use a filter in your pipe.
Especially the german 9mm active charcoal filters suck up lots of the flavors and mouth feels good tobacco will get you.
I only use filters with few aromatic blends that tend to be sharp or bite because of the burnt sugar.
I notice it the most with Mac Baren mixture, which can really bite without a filter if you don’t smoke it super slow and cool.
@@rolux4853 i have the opposite experience with 9mm filtered pipes. For me they eliminate harshness and preserve the flavor to come through

Same, almost looks like a black clay. Pretty sweet though.
@@DJRaveDave It's definitely a black clay pipe, looks like part of the stem has cracked off. He seems to mostly use clay pipes when smoking on these videos, probably because they're flavor neutral and unlikely to ghost, so he's able to taste more of the specific varietal.

Why is his jacket so tight?
I don't know what it is, but black Cavendish does not agree with me at all. I've been smoking a pipe for over a decade and I always get bite.
Weird, I use to smoke captain black dark a lot and it was always a cool smoke for me!
3 years late but here you go.
Cavendish is very sweet, sugary not a strong tobacco by any means. However, when you over heat it? Ie "you get a hot pipe" it tends to give a bite. It's meant to be slowly smoked. When you smoke it too fast, it will bite back. It's like it's saying "HEY you're smoking me wrong! Slow down!".

Guys, please shave your beards. There is nothing more unhygenic if you stand over the tabacco and mix them. The hairs Fall into your tobaccos.
