@@pipeninja1578To be honest, I have done that before and it makes no difference either way. If you can keep the pipe lit then how is adding a little more tobacco on top a problem? Much practice and many more smokes later with different tobaccos and I can use the breath technique or the 'normal' technique almost without thinking. @@SiLatics56 Pipe smoking is a great hobby, and very personal. As long as you are enjoying it, it doesn’t matter what technique you’re using. I usually only light my pipe once or twice because I am meticulous about slowly puffing continually and also tamping and dumping ash. I bet I do that more than anyone. It’s like poking a fire in a fireplace to me. I just enjoy the heck out of it! There are some flake cut blends that, even though I let them dry for 15-20 minutes after rubbing them out, they are still “oily”, and hard to light and keep lit. Those require several relights. @@pipeninja1578 Thanks, I appreciate that and found your comment useful. Just wanted to check, when you say 'dumping ash', do you mean getting rid of it by tapping the excess from the bowl whilst you smoke? Plus, the stuff about types of tobacco I have a lot to learn about yet. The blends I've smoked so far were because I liked the sound of them haha (coffee, whisky, custard, all sorts). I'm definitely looking forward to the new pipe because the current one seems to have caked quite a bit and I do clean it thoroughly. The flavours I've been getting seem to have gone and mostly I can just taste tobacco plus the other stuff associated with cigarettes. It was only about 20 quid so maybe that's the reason. Bless y'all. As a pipe smoker, this was hard to watch BUTTTT good for y'all for trying. You are having a hard time with it because there's a lot of things working against you. A few tips. 1. It's best for beginners to not smoke aromatics. They are heavily topped with flavoring that makes it harder to keep lit, makes things burn hot, and can irritate the mouth more. I recommend, whatever blend you choose, drying it out for 10-15 mins before packing. 2. Packing. Don't pack too hard. You can always tighten a pack throughout the smoke. It's near impossible to loosen once it's packed too heavy. (please don't add fresh tobacco on top of what you've already lit, lol). Pro tip, slide a pipe cleaner through the stem extending through the bottom of the bowl - THEN pack the pipe. This will make it hard to over pack. 3. Gentle tamping. When I lessened the pressure on my tamp game, things changed so much! Good job y'all. And a cigar in the pipe - good call! 👍
You solved the riddle for me! That's why my dang pipe has been so hot!! Still haven't tried any other blends, but it's on my bucket list for sure. Thanks!

(To anyone that's starting out) Not really, a pipe can last a lifetime or be burned out in a month. If you are getting into it, a great start is a corncob pipe (or 7 lol), learn the frank packing method and the breathing method of smoking. Also, every serious pipe smoker has a rotation of pipes so they can dry out completely in between uses. I use a pipe, run a pipe cleaner through it then choose a new pipe for the next smoke. Light it to char the top, lightly tamp down then light again. When the flavor changes and you get less smoke, you tamp it down slightly to move the ember to new tobacco. When it finally goes out at the bottom there is still a little tobacco but I call it quits there and don't relight it, it's just wet down there and not worth it.
Omg! You guys killed me. I am a cigar smoker who switched to pipes years ago. All I can say is you did EVERYTHING completely wrong except one thing, and it’s the most important thing! You had fun!! 👍
Ok. I love y'all and love seeing y'all give pipes some exposure. I do get frustrated though with cigar guys saying that it is a lot of work. When packed right you should have to tamp an/or relight 0-3 times and cigar guys (of which I am) typically touch up the burn 3-10 times a stick. Yes it does take some getting used to in order to get a good pack. Think about it, you are now the "cigar roller" and just like them you have to find the balance of the tobacco tight enough to stay lit but loose enough to draw through. But there are tons of videos on it. The three pinch method is the best in my opinion. (Look it up lol) But really after 20-30 bowls you get used to knowing how packed is just packed enough. Then also learn how to use your fingers to cover the bowl as you puff in order to get a dieing cherry back.
If I have to touch up a cigar more than once or twice I won't buy that cigar again. A cigar that's rolled properly shouldn't require touch ups. I find a pipe to be too much hassle. I want to like it. It smells fantastic and tastes good although I prefer cigar taste still. Maybe I need to smoke a pipe with someone that has more experience.
One thing I heard from a video years back was pack with three pinches, first like you are shaking a child’s hand, second like a woman’s, and the last and top pinch like a man’s hand. Idk why but that stuck with me and helped me pack more success bowls.
I found my dad’s old pipe in a box when he passed and thought I’d give it a shot. Super relaxing actually. And the rituals involved were really fun to learn. I now have like 10-12 pipes, some rather expensive. I still smoke a pipe from time to time. But it’s a learning curve for sure. And once I learned about ghosting and that there are WAY tastier tobaccos out there than aromatics, it was a game changer. Best advice is to not take it too seriously and don’t listen to the pipe snobs. lol 👍🏽
6:05 Y’all crack me up. I love it. Ok, fair enough. Here’s what I learned. Put in a clump of tobacco and lightly push it in, maybe down your 3/4 “full” if you will. Then add another clump and pack it a little tighter, maybe half way or a little more. Then one more and pack it in lightly. Go roundy roundy with your finger. It should still be a little spongy. Now light it evenly while puffing, only brushing the top of the tobacco. Don’t stick your lighter down in the bowl. Tamp it lightly between lights to get, (as Jason Dagner calls it the coal cookie crust) down a little. Repeat two more times. The tobacco will expand as you light it too. Then you should just be able to maintain it with light tamping to keep that coal down against the tobacco underneath. And the bowl should never get too hot to hold. If it does, either put it down for a minute, or do what they call, “sipping”. Light draws. You’ll get the hang of it.
I smoke both pipes and cigars, I've watched lord knows how many videos on the "how to" questions, but I have discovered in my 3 years of smoking that you should smoke your pipe however the hell you want! So long as you're enjoying yourself. You guys clearly had fun smoking your pipes and that to me is all that matters Side note, whenever I'm smoking a 50 ring gauge cigar, I'll get to the nub when it's too hot for my fingers to hold, i'll shove the nub into my pipe and keep on puffing 😂
Good grief!!!🤣🤣🤣 The pipe smokers are ALL cringing LIKE MOTHERS right now!!! I have heard it said, “There is NO WRONG WAY to smoke a pipe.”. You boys just proved that wrong!😆. I have NEVER heard of adding tobacco to the bowl after you light your pipe. You don’t need the Bovida Packs. You can put pipe tobacco in a ball jar and store it in a cool dark place for YEARS. It is not like a cigar which requires a humidor. Thanks for the chuckles!🥷🏼🙏❤️
This was fun to watch. I have been predominantly a cigar smoker for several years, but now I tend to smoke more pipes. With four jobs between my wife and I, two kids, and another one on the way it’s hard for me to find an hour of free time to smoke a cigar. I think that’s why I’ve been gravitating towards pipes lately. It’s less expensive and you don’t have to commit much time.
cigars are my first choice but I do like smoking a pipe on long drives. took me a few times to get down the process and keep it going. Just actually got 3 new Chris Morgan Bones pipes in the mail today
Packing is a feel, but you can pack it down and cold draw it to make sure it has enough air flow, but is also packed well. As for lighting, don't be afraid to use plenty of flame. Ill inhale like 10 or 15 times with the flame to the pipe.
As a four year pipe smoker, watching this makes me realize that anyone interested in smoking cigars should first learn how to smoke a pipe first. I’m watching this simply because I’m only now starting to smoke cigars! Pipe smoking feels completely natural and easy to me NOW, but can obviously appreciate the flavor difference, amount of smoke and ease of a cigar. Had I started with a cigar, I’d likely never put the effort into learning a pipe. Now I get to enjoy both! Great video🙌🏼
this is an interesting way to look at it and makes sense and i will say theres nothing like the smell of a pipe which is what brings me back to using mine
I tried to get into pipe smoking. It's certainly less expensive than cigars as a hobby. Ultimately my pipe has become a cigar "nubber". I like to smoke really good sticks down to nothing. Putting the nub in a pipe to finish it off is a fine use for a $50 pipe that would otherwise sit unused😅
@@DemocratsRGroomers 'cept sometimes that resin at the end makes a sweet spot. Sometimes it's like smoking couch cushion fuzz... blech! @@anthonybrakus5280 LOL! Yeah I never tried it myself, just an idea. Some people like the pungent end of a cigar. I can see how it would make me cringe a little cutting up a beautiful new cigar.😄
Leave the lid off and dry the tobacco a bit. Not too much, but it’s wet. Plus, light pack in first, little more second and top off with heavier pack. Then light, pack and light the second time and should be good.
Before I smoked my first bowl, I received a great bit of advice from Dan Spaniola, son of Paul Spaniola, and owner of Paul’s Pipe Shop in Flint, Michigan: “If you’re not cleaning as you smoke, you’re not cleaning your pipe.” - meaning, that if you don’t run a pipe cleaner down your stem and shank, periodically while smoking your pipe, it’s not really getting cleaned. I’m a wet smoker, and live by Dan’s advice.
10:30 Clean after smoking. And I store a clean pipe cleaner down in the stem. And some say rest your pipes for a few days between smokes. I don’t do that. lol
Hey guys, long time no see! I quit cigars and went to pipe smoking. I'm gonna be buying your pipe tobaco. Irish cream is gonna be the one for sure. Keep up the great work guys.
I've been a pipe smoker for many years. Irish cream and black cherry are great flavours. Peterson makes some wonderful tobacco blends. Where I live, pig or "miner's" pipe tobacco is popular for both pipes and chewing
i am a daily pipe smoker and indulge in cigars maybe twice a week. the way i light my pipe tobacco is similar to lighting a cigar. it is a two step process. on the initial light, i put the flame to the tobacco and draw until the tobacco puffs up/expands. then i slightly tamp down the tobacco and light again while drawing on the pipe.
I smoked a pipe years ago, and I don't remember how I finally got it to stay lit. Somehow, I just got it to stay lit but I couldnt explain what I was doing different.
I have smoked a pipe since I was 22 years old 53 now. The way to pack a pipe is to push on the baccy and air out air pockets so the tobacco is pushed together like a cigg I use a tapper and my finger. Lighting is alway turn the pipe at an angle so with a match or lighter it draws the flame into the bowl. There are pipe lighters bent an an angle so it goes in like a match but less a gas taste
Ive tried to get into pipe smoking multiple times but its just not worth it to me. Its an enjoyable smoke but its just too much damn hassle for me. Ill stick with cigars.
I used to smoke romeo y juliette no2 cigars and I was in a bar and when I put it to die an old boy mext to me asked if he could have it. I said "yea" and he stuffed it in his pipe and finished it off and I thought what a great idea. So I got a pipe and did the same. I then got into pipe smoking but I still finish my sticks in one. There's some really nice cigar pipe blends on the market 2 of my favourite are key largo by gl pease and robusto. Luckily I got a good supply in before customs clamped down on US tobacco coming into the UK. P.s I smoke pipes and cigars on my yt channel.
Usually I char, then pack and do a final light. But I do the three layer pack. I haven't smoked a pipe in a few years though, thought I'd give it some time and get a more quality tobacco.
I've been a pipe smoker for about a year & a half now, I've watched a LOT of videos on it (Muttonchop, Spurgeon, Pipe Cottage, ect.) & have never see nor heard of anyone packing more fresh tobacco on top of already lit tobacco in the pipe.🤨 I have stuck cigars in a pipe to finish them though.😁
Yeah, I started with cigars and got inte pipe when I were trying to cut down the cost per smoke (poor student). The three pinch method is great, as several others have allready mentioned. When done right I usually only need to tamp the tobacco down a couple of times during the smoke. There are of course no loss of prestige in relighting the pipe if it goes out. I would not add any new tobacco during smoke, but rather fill up a new bowl if I'm up for it after the first one is empty. Proper cleaning after smoking is key if you care about your pipe. It will in many cases outlast you if done right. All unburnt tobacco should be gently removed out of the bowl after a smoke. No need for a bent pipe cleaner. Tapping a hot pipe against a hard surface is a good way to crack your pipe. Use the "spoon" on the pipe tool instead. It's generally a good idea to refrain from disassembly of your pipe untill it's cooled of. Many pipe smokers I've spoken to seldom takes the pipe apart, I usually do after it's cool. As with all other things though, use them in whatever way brings you the most pleasure. And ss whith any other thing you can do, there are snobs/zealots telling you the "only/right way" you should do it. Music, cigars, pipes, whiskey, wine, beer, shaving, you name it, they're there. I have to admit though that even I started to reach for any religious symbol I could find when you stuck a day-old cigar in your pipe. You sir, need an exorcist XD
Brad. I don’t know if you let your pipe cool before you took it apart to explain cleaning. You have to let it completely cool before cleaning. You increase your chance of breakage when you take a pipe apart hot. But. Your pipe didn’t really stay lit too long.
I was a pipe smoker before a cigar smoker. You guys have to try G.L. Pease Quiet Nights, and Hearth and home Blackhouse and whiteknight. English blends are mind blowing to cigar smokers and much better tasting and complex than aromatics pipe tobacco. I have to say, you really haven't tried pipe tobacco until you've smoked a good English blend.
Pipes are just too much of a pain in the ass in my opinion. But I get it you could get 100 good bowls of pipe tobacco for the cost of 10 decent cigars.
Let the pipe cool completely before disassembling and cleaning with pipe cleaners. The briar wood will expand when hot and cause your stem not to fit tight anymore when you re-assemble it.
Two of the main differences are: pipe smoking is way way more cost effective. For a £20 cigar for what, an hour of smoking time, you can get a 50g tin of top quality pipe tobacco which will last you weeks/even a month or more for maybe one bowl a day. It's a no brainer. Also, the room note of pipe tobacco is way nicer. No matter how great a cigar is, the smell it leaves behind is always pretty nasty and hard to get rid of. Pipe smoking wins every time.
Myself I prefer pipes over cigar and those tobacco came in time cause I just finished making my own pipe out of a guava branch & can wait for the coco whiskey tobacco to arrive 🤙🏼
packing a pipe has rules-1st pack a third of a bowel lightly pressed in-baby-2 pack, second third of a bowel-slightly heavily pack-mother, last third of a bowel pressed down firmly-father -so you pack a pipe like the 3 bears from Goldie locks lol-just keep having fun as long as you enjoy it thats all that matters

I haven’t smoked my pipes in quite a while. But one of my favorites was Hearth & Home Anniversary Kake.
I liked it a lot.
👍🏼
@@dstdrummer what flavour notes?
Well. It looks like they had fun making the video

Y’all crack me up.
😂 Hey as long as you're enjoying it, that's all that matters.
Brutal to watch
You can crack where it comes together, always let it cool
I smoke both pipes and cigars, I've watched lord knows how many videos on the "how to" questions, but I have discovered in my 3 years of smoking that you should smoke your pipe however the hell you want! So long as you're enjoying yourself. You guys clearly had fun smoking your pipes and that to me is all that matters
Side note, whenever I'm smoking a 50 ring gauge cigar, I'll get to the nub when it's too hot for my fingers to hold, i'll shove the nub into my pipe and keep on puffing 😂
It was fun watching you guys! But don't clean your pipe until it is completely cooled down.
Ive always been intrigued by pipes. Been smokimg cigars since 2010. Pipes seem like rocket science lol
its really not that bad but it does take a few times to settle into it
Good grief!!!🤣🤣🤣 The pipe smokers are ALL cringing LIKE MOTHERS right now!!!
Confirmed. Mines still moist after 3 years in bell jars and no packs
You really shouldn`t take your pipe apart when it is warm. It can ruin the pipe making the stem loose.
Removing the stem while and right after you smoke it 🤯😅😂
Brad it's a good thing you're not an expert packer 😅
I tried to get into pipe smoking. It's certainly less expensive than cigars as a hobby. Ultimately my pipe has become a cigar "nubber". I like to smoke really good sticks down to nothing. Putting the nub in a pipe to finish it off is a fine use for a $50 pipe that would otherwise sit unused😅
I wonder if you were to cut pieces off a new cigar and smoke it through a pipe, that way you don't get that bite from the resin collected at the end.
@@DemocratsRGroomers 'cept sometimes that resin at the end makes a sweet spot. Sometimes it's like smoking couch cushion fuzz... blech!
Folks used to use cigar holders, you don't see them as much as the old days. Seems like your schema would work, and if you find the resin build up unenjoyable, cut the stick into pieces might do the trick. Let me know if you try it, I'm afraid to cut my cigars up. I'm a coward for tradition.
@@anthonybrakus5280 LOL! Yeah I never tried it myself, just an idea. Some people like the pungent end of a cigar. I can see how it would make me cringe a little cutting up a beautiful new cigar.😄
Where do ubget your taboco and can i get it online
Leave the lid off and dry the tobacco a bit. Not too much, but it’s wet. Plus, light pack in first, little more second and top off with heavier pack. Then light, pack and light the second time and should be good.
Pipes are a relationship. Cigars are a one night stand.
THIS IS THE BEST COMMENT so true
Pipes go out when you talk. Totally normal
There are pipe tobacco with cigar leaf in the blend. Billy budd is pretty good cigar leaf blend.
10:30
Clean after smoking. And I store a clean pipe cleaner down in the stem.
And some say rest your pipes for a few days between smokes.
I don’t do that.
lol
Quick tip, puff on your pipe while you’re stuffing it so it won’t go out.
Take a few puffs after lighting it until it’s properly lit
Hey guys, long time no see! I quit cigars and went to pipe smoking. I'm gonna be buying your pipe tobaco. Irish cream is gonna be the one for sure. Keep up the great work guys.
I’ve personally broken 3 pipes taking them apart hot/warm
Why would you not learn after the 3rd time?
I've been a pipe smoker for many years. Irish cream and black cherry are great flavours. Peterson makes some wonderful tobacco blends. Where I live, pig or "miner's" pipe tobacco is popular for both pipes and chewing
Patience is the virtue of pipe smoking.
i am a daily pipe smoker and indulge in cigars maybe twice a week. the way i light my pipe tobacco is similar to lighting a cigar. it is a two step process. on the initial light, i put the flame to the tobacco and draw until the tobacco puffs up/expands. then i slightly tamp down the tobacco and light again while drawing on the pipe.
what were the cherry cavendish and Irish cream brands and blends? Thanks
Where can I find the Irish cream tobacco?
I smoked a pipe years ago, and I don't remember how I finally got it to stay lit. Somehow, I just got it to stay lit but I couldnt explain what I was doing different.
When dude removed the stem while the pipe was hot, I literally cringed.
What are the brands of pipes and brands of tobacco. I'm new to exploring the pipe world
I have smoked a pipe since I was 22 years old 53 now.
Curious what Irish crème you smoked
This was hilariously cringe in all the best ways. Thank u.
I've been a pipe smoker for about a year & a half now, I've watched a LOT of videos on it (Muttonchop, Spurgeon, Pipe Cottage, ect.) & have never see nor heard of anyone packing more fresh tobacco on top of already lit tobacco in the pipe.🤨
I have stuck cigars in a pipe to finish them though.😁
Casting Pearls to a Swine 😂😂😂😂😂 - only joking - enjoyed the video
😂😂
Ya missed a perfect opportunity to introduce a cigar leafxburley blend like old joe krantz or haunted bookshop or Pegasus.
Do y'all sell pipes or tobacco at your shop?
Brad. I don’t know if you let your pipe cool before you took it apart to explain cleaning. You have to let it completely cool before cleaning. You increase your chance of breakage when you take a pipe apart hot. But. Your pipe didn’t really stay lit too long.
I'm a pipe smoker and yes, I do occasionally inhale.
If you have a hankering for pipe tobacco, but don't want the hassle, pickup a Stillwell Star Aromatic #1 cigar. REALLY good.
Smoking a pipe increases your IQ. Wear glasses and a jacket with patches on elbows too for max effect!
I bought a pipe and tobacco last year wish I could trade it for some cigars
I was a pipe smoker before a cigar smoker. You guys have to try G.L. Pease Quiet Nights, and Hearth and home Blackhouse and whiteknight. English blends are mind blowing to cigar smokers and much better tasting and complex than aromatics pipe tobacco. I have to say, you really haven't tried pipe tobacco until you've smoked a good English blend.
Pipes are just too much of a pain in the ass in my opinion. But I get it you could get 100 good bowls of pipe tobacco for the cost of 10 decent cigars.
He hurt me when he was banging his bowl on the table 😢
I prefer to lay the tobacco out for 30 minutes to an hours before smoking. Let it dry out a bit first.
Curious why you didn’t try an English blend or a Virginia perique ? Aromatics do not give you the flavor of the leaf itself
Let the pipe cool completely before disassembling and cleaning with pipe cleaners. The briar wood will expand when hot and cause your stem not to fit tight anymore when you re-assemble it.
Interesting video concept
I like pipes and cigar but pipes seems to be a little harder and annoying sometimes. If it’s windy, it’s annoying. I usually over-pack and over-tamp.
I used a metal cap to stop wind getting in. Works a treat
I have been using a torch to light my pipe for a couple of weeks. It's windy around these here parts 😂
Sweet Jesus do NOT pack fresh tobacco on top of lit tobacco 😯
😅😅❤
