'sophie' is such amazing satire, bc only by living living in the uk could you understand how cheap things can be. seeing her flash that tenner as an "impossible" challenge was amazing. I could literally walk into LIDL with $15, and get quality, nutritious food (and maybe even a bottle of wine if you spend right).
I knew something was up with her when I noticed her acting and compared it to that millionaires son video. She just sounded and acted better. She didn't sound real. But at the time I was thinking "This could just be a joke lol. She doesn't sound real at all!" And then when she started to take selfies with her trainer in the background, I knew it was all fake. That had such comedic timing and self awareness that it just could not be real. But I was never expecting it to be an arg!!! I was so so so happy to find out it was an arg! I originally thought it was just a parody account. This is better.
I feel like this has something to do with her father. Her comments about not knowing where his business came from and that comment about her dad getting offended about her criticizing the mansion and saying something like “It’s a whole nother mansion,” makes me think he did some demonic dirt to get where he is, and now the fee is being extracted by the thing in the suit from his daughter.
Plus the monster looks a lot like her father in certain shots - the slope of the shoulders, the way it stands, how the suit hangs, etc. Not sure if it's intentional or just the same actor, though.
and she said she feels lonely because her father has been away for a long time. It is on her twitter account. She mainly talks about her dad, and the only picture we have seen is one of him, not her mom, so yeap, something is going on
I'm pretty sure Plum wasn't "snatched up" from Sophie's house at the end of that episode. Before they leave the house, Plum says she's going upstairs to investigate, and then we saw Sophie, her manager, and Mark all leave the house. I think they left Plum.
What I assumed was that when plum went upstairs she ran into the monster and that's when she got snatched up. And sophie just absentmindedly assumed that plum went home on her own as she mentioned in the last video.
Literally I get how people can dislike n’ stuff without realizing it’s an ARG but stooping so low to insult her about looks...that ain’t it. Also people can find out it’s a mansion just used for the video but not realize she’s an actor?
Yeah, I agree. Attacking someone’s looks is really not cool. She’s not even that ugly (in my opinion anyway), it’s just the makeup in her first video was done really badly
I think what really shows to me about her descent into.....whatever this is, is the fact that we start with Sophie having a full face of ridiculous makeup with this perfect bleached blonde hair. By the end, she's got easily two, three inches of dark roots showing. She's not maintaining her "image" anymore - she can't. Maybe I'm reading too far into it, but hey. It's on this channel. We're expected to read way into things.
Something I noticed in hindsight: the luxury and overall high-class part of sophies descent/the series starts to go down and down and down as the videos go on. First we start off with her luxurious, glorious, almost stupidly opulent house with rich cars and a private jet, her own personal trainer, her own clothing line, all of this stuff that us 99% could only ever hope of achieving in our dreams. Then we see her try to spend one day with just 10 pounds (which she ends up "failing") but is still mostly focused around her business deal. *Then* it goes on to her mingling with the everyman in a nightclub lots of people go to, whether or not theyre richer than god itself before switching back to her going to a bougie upper crust party deal, decked to the nines and then some. Right after that it goes into Laras house, which seems like a normal, middle-class, nobodies business house that the average family could afford. After that? INSTANT drop into a dingy, dirty, boarded up and dark home that is devoid of any luxury and opulence. It's a slowburn thats pretty damn subtle and maybe not even intentional, but god damn is it good. Someone smarter than me could probably do some insane cool symbolism connect the dots bit with it.
Great spot. I'd imagine it is intentional, particularly because it's a British series and class consciousness is still very prevalent here (your house being one of the prime expressions of that).
I got the impression right away that the house, the Lambo and the jet were simply rented, and used as props. You can rent the huge English mansions on the days they're closed from tours, for only a few thousand pounds.
@@mandala314 There's enough evidence to support that for sure. Although I doubt it means anything, we all know this is an ARG. They do need sets, props, etc.
I think the thing that makes this so effective is that the parody is beautifully done. I definitely *can* believe that someone could unironically make this content. I could even believe in the branding. Just the parody by itself is really quite good.
Just a little detail that I never noticed before. When they get “glittered up” for the night out at a cheap club. She is WAY more “glammed up” than her friend plum. She wouldn’t let her “friend” be on the same level as her. She had to have more than her. Nice little detail. I really like when unfiction pays attention to the little things.
The problem is there's been a number of people doing the same obnoxious "my life is amazing, I'm rich and want to change the world" type shit for a while now. *At least for me, that's one of the reasons it feels so subversive.
@@uglybiscuit1828 Yeah, that'll do it. Just remember to do your research next time. Okay? Not sarcasm or disrespect, I'm being serious. Have a good life, dude! :)
"I wanted someone to take the Instagram lifestyle vlogger channel and poison it" Hard same. It's like watching the social media-gentrified modern internet reclaimed by the surreal shaky-cam chaos the 'net was made for.

the acting is superb. you actually think she is upper class and some of the things are happening (well some of the things) the screams actually sound full of emotion, it's amazing I love this
The transformation of Lara into Sophie is definitely an interesting one, and there's some very obvious symbolism there. It's easy for us to become anyone we want to become online. We can distance ourselves from who we actually are and dive head first into a constructed fantasy life. Lara is clearly introduced as a character who aims to do exactly that. It could be that that where Lara is living is not her house, or the cat thing could just be a pointless, arbitrary lie. Sometimes pathological liars will lie about things they have no reason to lie about. Maybe not being a cat person is just another aspect of the false persona she's invented for herself. Looking at the latest video from the channel, which includes clips of a shot-for-shot remake of the original trailer with Lara substituted for Sophie, that concept of living an entirely fabricated life seems to be the entire point of this series. Superficial and self-centered people like the both of them are a dime a dozen, and more are made every day. For all we know, Lara might not even be the first to do something like this in the reality of this story. Maybe Sophie herself had usurped someone before her, and Lara is only continuing an endless cycle.
All I can think to ask is “how much does it cost to seem convincingly rich for your video where it is possibly the most important part of the illusion?”
I think it's like a grand for the clothing, another grand to rent the lambo, 4 grand (or you have a hookup) to rent the private jet and another few grand to rent the property. Then there's the camera equipment, the editing and the PCs plus staff pay. My best guestimate is 14K + paying the people involved, but there's a chance they just get a cut of the revenue or they are doing this as students or a group of friends/ARG fans themselves. If everyone had to get paid, we're probably looking at 20K all in all. Breakeven point at ~3.5 to 7 million channelviews. The large disparity is because I've only got guestimates on prices (and if people got paid already or not) and the pay for ads varies too. HOWEVER: The clothes could be left over halloween props/loaners, the lambo could belong to a friend or they could have a friend that works at a luxury car dealership and they borrowed it for an hour. They could have asked someone that's a fan of ARGs or just really generous if they can film on his private jet for an hour. (to create backstory) It's not exactly a tourist hotspot that house and certainly not in the November to January span of the year. So if they said they were enthusiasts and if they could please film there (perhaps for a bit of pay/exposure while there's a downtime, and you make sure to film carefully) that wouldn't be too bad either. If it's a group of friends doing it for the love of it and they already have access to cameras/computers and editing skills, that would basically be free too. So then we're looking at a grand or less and breakeven point of ~250K video views. Hope that helped. If it did not, I still had fun thinking about it, so no loss either way.
Demon posesed, brain eating, soul snatching, slenderman monsters? Ok TH-cam responding to creators? C'mon, that's not realistic. Put some thought into your stories. 😉
It really says something when you're writing a paranormal, reality-bending story about a billionaire trust fund baby pushing a youtube-centric brand who has an entourage, staff, and channel manager...and you decide "youtube responded" will *still* break suspension of disbelief. XD
Ben certainly raises a lot of suspicions. First, he emails a channel with a large following, putting Sophie out there, which leads to a rabid fan. Then he films the whole sequence of things as they're happening, being rude to her while she's panicing and filming the whole time and when she's tied to the chair, his first instinct isn't to help...I think he's in on it.
You know what's funny...being from the UK I recognize the house she claims is 'her mansion' and I know for a fact it's a house that is rented out to film/tv studios, why? Because being a film student I was responsible for scouting filming locations for our college film which was meant to be a cluedo (or Clue to Americans) style murder mystery short film. The house was one of the locations, it's Broughton Hall and it's owned by the Tempest family (who I had to contact to ask prices on filming at that location and it was...lets just say out of a students budget, which is what they told me when I quoted what we could afford to spend), of which Sophie isn't a listed member.
@@mattghostly5261 Turned out OK to be honest, this was before the days of the internet so it's probably stored on some dusty DVD somewhere at the college...
The moment she said “Soph-heads” I had to pause the video and just take a moment to actually die. I am dead now. I’m but a phantom who lingers on this mortal coil for all eternity, never to be freed. 😔
I couldn't see it on the comments so... The pose Sophie makes while on her "throne" is a pretty clear reference to Bathometh most Iconic one, her head there is even crowned or, better, portayed with a halo over it and the logo is a pretty clear reference to Illuminati... Can't decide if these are easter eggs or something more but sure worth noting. Thank you so much Night Mind, you provide such good content, big cheers from Italy:)
With the triangles, it was used by the Illuminati (the real one) because of it's alchemical and religious iconography, so they could be referencing a lot of stuff there. Also, the hands of Baphomet in that pose are an alchemical reference as well. A familiar one, if you're into Found Footage Horror: As above, so below. The left hand pointing up is a reference by itself to something called "The Left Hand Path". So there's a lot here, in terms of references.
What really got me was her first intro look, cuz I could see where her foundation met her hairline since the line was so harsh and the foundation was darker than her natural skin tone.
"I love everything about this." - me too Night Mind, me too. This is one of the most well-done unfiction/ARG series I've ever seen. The acting is on point, the monster is horrifying, and the camera work/shots are near perfect. I first heard about this from the Leon Lush video and I've been fascinated by it since. As always, your video on this is intricately made and impressive all on its own. Thanks for all the awesome content!
I did not expect this to twist into something I would actually follow. The beginning of the video I was like "Why am I watching this." End of video *checks youtube, instagram, and twitter*
I love how much fun you have with your narrations. "I feel *energized*. I'm feeling *renewed*. I'm feeling a little bit *bitey*." I can practically HEAR your 8w8 smille. You remind me so much of Cecil Palmer sometimes it's uncanny, even though I know you aren't too keen on Night Vale references after getting inundated with requests to cover the podcast. Great to have an upload from you in these isolating times.
Sophie's 'house' (or her dad's house) is literally right on my doorstep, it's a National Trust building, not privately owned. I've done a photoshoot on the steps where you see Sophie posing many times. Some of the interior shots are from the same building
speculation time!: *so that throwaway line at the beginning that she said where she didn't know how her dad got super rich, not just a throwaway line, deal with the devil type thing, and her dad didn't trade off his soul, he traded off Sophie. *this is a double satire, not just of the dumb hypebeast culture stuff, but also of the amount of hate against them (from the tattoo on the hand), or triple, the third layer I can't decipher yet, because its a _severed_ hand that's on the monster's face with the HATE tattoo, not just the monster having the tattoo itself. *the next video is gonna be straight up Lara living Sophie's life, in like another vlog *(less speculation more just a comment) the actress that plays Sophie is actually pretty good, like when she was filming that final video, she had to act like she was distressed acting like she was fine, the layers on that is always very fun to see portrayed

Honestly I support the production team for the accuracy and honesty it felt like a real rich kid trying to be “real like the rest of us” and I loved the trailer. Nice job and cool arg
xXPandaGalaxyXx this is well produced. It obviously had a budget. And all of those “things” are available to rent. They never flew in the jet, her dads house is actually an old Mansion that can be rented, etc.
21:40 “first we’re going to be doing a night out at this like, super cheap and super normal type place. Gonna bring Plum along, cause like, that’s totally her vibe.” Christ, I think the backhand on that one broke _my_ neck, never mind Plum’s. This is great.
this is my interpretation: the stalker really, really wants to be Sophie, so she contact with a paranormal creature (maybe a demon) to help her, and in the end she put her soul in sophie's body, so she could have everything she dreams. This could be a critic about the people how consume this kind of content. they are not happy with what they have, so they wach this kind of thing to dream with what they could have.
but who was the previous kidnapping victim? who was the owner of that house? maybe 'lara' has done this before. But what of Mark? and Plum? what did that THING do to them?
Sara Fontanini or Laura wasn’t actually a fan before the monster (Handyman?) got to her, but a prior victim or someone related to them. Sophie wasn’t vlogging long enough to give someone time to get that obsessed.I tend to think Laura was desperate not to have Sophie leave because she was afraid of what the creature would do if she didn’t keep Sophie there.
When we first saw Laura I thought she was actually Plum and that they were the same person, and that later vlogs would show Plum is actually a lonley girl somewhere imagining being Sophie's best friend to escape her humdrum life. And that later we would see Plum actually contact Sophie and try to be real friends with her, but she starts doing so in a manner that's creepy. Needless to say, the actual Laura and Plum dynamic that we have was a bit of a suprise- even though it probably was obvious to everyone else.
Hey, I just realized that the music playing at the end of Sophie's final vid is the same music that comes from Lara's lil toy house with the eyes "Pop Goes the Weasel"✌️
I absolutely wasn't prepared for something like this to happen right after I decided to do Cabin Fever Dreams hardcore this year. It's like the simultaneous best and worst accident ever.
Honestly, I love this kind of horror/ARG type of stuff that makes me too scared to get outside of my bed. Being a horror fan with anxiety is.. difficult, but it is how it is. 😅
during the whole video I was like "she reminds me of someone" and!!! pennywise actor, Bill Skarsgård. If you look at her face structure, mostly focused on the eyes and eyebrow (but focusing on the bone structure of the eye sockets and the eyebrow bone) it has a giant resemblance!
Was kind of hoping for a more gradual buildup before It Happened(tm), tbh. Maybe a couple of videos foreshadowing what happened to Plum, or more people around Sophie disappearing with clues left behind that Sophie was woefully too dense to recongnize/understand (leaving something for viewers to focus on as stuff unfolded). The abruptness of the most recent video isn't really my style, but since it isn't the end, there's plenty of room for something I might personally find more satisfying. As far as where it goes; I think it would be neat if Lara took over Sophie's life (potentially foreshadowed by her outfit at the end of the most recent upload). Going forward, social media posts and videos are created by Lara, and the world around her acts as if she's the real Sophie. As time goes on, parts of her new reality to gradually crumble as the consequences of whatever she did in order to steal Sophie's life come to pass. To keep viewers up to date with what is going on with the real Sophie, maybe they could include coded links to short unlisted videos, or hidden images showing us her status. At the end of the day, I'm more of a fan of either a slow burn/subtle ride or an immediate jump into the action/weirdness; and I tend not to like a middle ground as much for pacing reasons. I'll probably briefly keep up with it to see what they do, but this might be the type of series that either isn't for me or that I wait for completion of before binge-watching. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Maybe the slow burn was making people tune out of the channel, so many horror fans would just gloss over at the thumbnails because it looked too close to the real life Instagram BS
I think a lot of problems I've noticed with unfiction is that a slow burn can lead to burnout before anything major or gamechanging can happen, and when that thing does happen, the audience can lose interest unless they're __really__ good at capturing an audience's attention. The timing also matters if the bulk of the story is set to be told __after__ that specific event, which I think is what's going to happen here. I'll be honest and say that I hope this isn't over by a longshot. A series like this that starts out hard right out of the gate can have a lot of potential.
I dunno, I was more invested when the story didn't plunge so deeply into paranormal. I was really excited for a `realistic` (as it can get while sophie chooses to stay in the same clearly breached home) sorta stalker story and wanted to see laura do a slow stalk for awhile longer
Okay, first time watching, 25:53, that mirror is positioned very specifically, if nothing happens in it, my inner director will feel very disappointed. Edit: I am disappointed.
Elizabeth Sullivan That’s fair. Honestly, it probably put me more on edge when nothing happened because I kept waiting. Still just like a small movement or something in the background would have been kinda cool. Something subtle, yaknow?

Thinking the same thing!!
I feel like this has something to do with her father. Her comments about not knowing where his business came from and that comment about her dad getting offended about her criticizing the mansion and saying something like “It’s a whole nother mansion,” makes me think he did some demonic dirt to get where he is, and now the fee is being extracted by the thing in the suit from his daughter.
you are really skilled at making theories
Plus the monster looks a lot like her father in certain shots - the slope of the shoulders, the way it stands, how the suit hangs, etc. Not sure if it's intentional or just the same actor, though.
I think he says “it’s a hall, not a mansion”
okay, this is a really good theory 😳
and she said she feels lonely because her father has been away for a long time.
I thought that was explicit in how Plum shouts YOU LEFT ME when they see her next.
This was a jab at how much of a "friend" these influencers really are to others how they easily forget others.
Oh damn, you're right! They left her!
I thought that was obvious? but ok
Literally I get how people can dislike n’ stuff without realizing it’s an ARG but stooping so low to insult her about looks...that ain’t it. Also people can find out it’s a mansion just used for the video but not realize she’s an actor?
Her make-up is not a rich persons make-up...compare to anyone famous.

Omg totally, it shows how long she was really in there for.
666th like...we should read into that.
That is smart.

Being rude? He tells her to be quiet thinking they’ve found a good hiding spot (that’s my take on it, anyways).
Agreed.
It’s possible he’s no longer the one filming when she is tied up

So there's a lot here, in terms of references.

this is my interpretation: the stalker really, really wants to be Sophie, so she contact with a paranormal creature (maybe a demon) to help her, and in the end she put her soul in sophie's body, so she could have everything she dreams. This could be a critic about the people how consume this kind of content. they are not happy with what they have, so they wach this kind of thing to dream with what they could have.

Kind of a supernatural Single White Female type deal.
Brian Bethea OH GOD!!
but who was the previous kidnapping victim? who was the owner of that house? maybe 'lara' has done this before.

I happened to watch this right after the My Dad's Tapes video. The quality whiplash is astounding.
I fully agree
I figured they could only afford to rent the space & props for so long. Hard to do a decent slow burn with those kinds of expenses.
