I’m Japanese, but I also speak English because I live in the U.S. Actually, this has happened to me, too. When I was new to the U.S., I didn’t know the word “Green peppers” and said “I like PEE MAN”. My teacher seemed to be pretty confused. It was so embarrassing and I wish I would have said “PAPRIKA” instead of “PEE MAN”😭
FYI) PEE MAN is actally from a French word "Piment", which means pepper. And this influenced Korean language during the WWII(when Japan colonized Korea.) So Koreans call it 피망, which sounds basically the same.
