It's a little-known fact that headbutting gaijin to death is actually why they invented the tile-breaking exercise. This was shown in the famous 1990s documentary on the contemporary figure, Segata Sanshiro.

Umm, my experience from living 6 years in Tokyo, working for a Japanese patent law firm and studying Japanese extensively is that, even speaking Japanese reasonably well, my gaijin face is just too scary such that 7-11 clerks will stammer "I don't speak English!" to me even if just ask for a bag in Japanese, very, very politely. So, mostly still just freezing in terror at the sight of foreigners rather than punching us...

One time in Tokyo, I ordered a "glass of wine," and the waiter repeated back "one grass wine," and I said "no, no, sorry, one glass of red wine please," and he said "yes, one grass wine red." Then it dawned on me he was saying . . . a GLASS of wine, not GRASS wine. I apologized, and he proceeded to beat me up with kindness and even laughed at me about it. Brutal. The Japanese are ruthless to foreigners. I will ONLY ever go back to visit Japan if I can afford a ticket, which can be at any moment, any time.

Not in Japan, but as a rideshare driver in the USA, I did have to pick up a Japanese man from the airport one time. Dude only spoke two languages: Japanese, and very broken English.
Long story short: I couldn't quite find him due to technical difficulties and the language barrier. I eventually did find him with the help of my other passanger (it was a shared ride). I was very apologetic towards him and he was very greatful that I didn't just leave him. Finally dropped him off at his Air bnb and he bowed at me in gratitude. One of the best experiences I had while driving rideshare so far. No drama from the other passenger either (a German woman). Sadly, this was the complete opposite of how these things usually play out. A lot more vitrol and hatried from the locals.
You don't realize how angry Americans are in the US until you leave for a while and go back.
Glad you had that experience! the one time I ever used an Uber we couldn't find each other and the dude legit left me out there at night, had to ask an acquaintance to let me sleep in their flat because there was no train 😂

When I was training in Japan as a rikishi, or professional sumo wrestler, I got quite good at japanese, enough for most people to not notice I wasnt a local (Im Korean-Australian so i blend in with a lot of Zanichi Koreans)
My neighbour who I knew for 3 years or so, very kind old Japanese lady almost had a heart attack when I spoke in perfect English to a british tourist while I was helping her shopping.
You still practice Sumo or changed career? Sorry the past tense got me curious
@@PanellonPelaton Sumo is a highly restrictive world with a dog eat dog mentality, those at the bottom have basically nothing and no say in what they do or can do.
Being from Australia I'm a little more free heeled then the average Japanese, so after bout a year I decided to leave the world of ozumo (professional sumo) to pursue amateur league instead. It wasn't worth sacrificing my identity and personal freedom.
I like how most people on the internet when they say foreigners in Japan they think mostly Europeans or Americans when in reality 80% of all foreigners there are Chinese, Koreans, Vietnamese and Japanese people from Brazil. This is uncomfortably close to how I sound speaking Japanese. The cringe is real
Speaking for most of us watching buddy, SHIN DAI-YO
Practice by listening to spoken Japanese and then recording yourself repeating that sentence/word/phrase, then listen to your recording and adjust your vocals each time to try and match the sound exactly. It would be better if you could do that live with a native speaker, maybe try and find a Japanese person online to practice with.
@@justmechanicthings Oh my ah wah mow shin day roo lmao
We're making it out of the arighetto with this one
it's weird that if you speak japanese perfect enough to be considered as a native japanese speaker, you gotta be careful while if you don't speak japanese that good, you don't have to be careful.
it's called gaizin privilege.
saying "arigatou" instead of "arigatou gozaimasu" to boss can be rude if you are japanese.
people who believe "arigatou" is rude might get such information for somewhere and misunderstand it as this situation will apply to you as well.
but the thing is if you speak way too perfect japanese, that might apply to you as well, but I feel like if you can speak perfect japanese, you must know what is actually polite or not, so you dont have to worry about it.
that's why sora often says "you should speak japanese in your own way"
I’ve been corrected on the gozaimasu issue before and I’m white…
I guess they think I’m Japanese…
I guess white people don't have to worry. We will never be Japanese, no matter what. The most offensive thing for me is when you speak well enough, but people laugh at you or just keep saying "I don't speak english", as if english was my first language, in the first place. I've been on my journey with the Japanese language for more than 20 years. It's not perfect, but differentiable enough from english, I'm quite sure.
@@ironhell813I actually like when they correct me, but it's so insanely rare. Not because I'd be perfect but that they just wouldn't be bothered enough.
"gaizin" privilege 🤣❤️
I think this idea of speaking “perfectly” is unfortunately perpetuated by other Japanese TH-camrs, who teach Japanese phrases to tourists. Many of them will say “don’t say this because it’s rude” or “I would never say it like this because it’s for friends” and “you should say this or that during meals and this or that depending on the time of day.” I ended up going to Japan feeling like I was walking on eggshells cuz I wasn’t sure if what I was saying or doing was rude.
I find this really funny and totally accurate.
I've just came back from Japan last sunday. I only knew very few basic words/sentences in Japanese, and had to use English quite a lot, but I've never faced an angry Japanese person.
The most important is indeed the attitude, your will to do good and that they can feel it.
Don't worry to much and enjoy your trip!
YOO, just saw the die by the blade trailer, instantly recognized your voice, good stuff
This is a great example learning another language is hard but in most places in Japan they will try to help as long as your polite about it. I had family visit Japan this being way back in the bubble era their words "it is nice and expensive I would love to live here if I won the lottery". I know a lot has changed since then but positive attitude always helps. ❤

I’ve been blessed enough to visit many places with different languages and cultures and a few rules have remained true in all of them.
1. Always be respectful, laws and customs of the place, and know that if you make a mistake, a sincere apology will go a long way. But just in general don’t be a trash person. You’re in a foreign country. Maybe that behavior is tolerated where you’re from but for them it may not be.
2. Try all the food, anything you can only find in a new country try it, you might hate it or you might find out you love it and it’s something you crave and the memory of it fills you with fondness and joy for years to come.
3. Speaking the native tongue isn’t necessary but it goes a long way in experiencing a new culture and most people tend to find joy in people making the attempt. It shows that you care and respect the culture enough and want to communicate with its people in that language.
4. Plan your next trip back

My experience in Japan visiting three cities was exactly as Sora described it: I learned the basics in Japanese and general guidelines on Japanese habits and had a wonderful experience. As Sora said, it's more about the attitude. Even when my few Japanese words were not enough and the person talking to me didn't know a word of English, smiles and patience did the trick. They were also very appreciative of me having learned at least thank you, hello, sorry I don't speak Japanese, etc.

for me it seems good that people concerned about manner in any country because learning their culture well is showing appreciation and that a good thing
In Turkey it is pretty much same as long as you apologize there is almost zero chance of getting beaten up. But if you intentionally insult people, never apologize or worse apologize mockingly the chance of beating would rapidly increase. Until it literally reaches 100% at that moment you might hear something like "yuu ar over dud!" this is the point you must run as fast as you can..
Watching this right now while I'm in japan is even funnier and informative at the same time

Sora always teaching with humour,🤞👍👍
I still remember the little old lady at a convenience store in Yokosuka who, with gusto, spoke every English word she knew as I bought something to drink. Almost like she had been waiting her whole life for the chance.
Amazing video of not to be rude in Japan, fantastic job.
When I was stationed in Japan in 2004, I've never met a single rude local. I went to a mom and pop ramen restaurant in Tachikawa. They even offered me a fork, but I declined with a smile and asked for chop sticks. They didn't even take offense when I asked to take a picture. They were delighted and posed with big smiles. It was a great place to eat, and the portion was so much, I couldn't even finish. I didn't think to say "Ittadakimasu" before eating, but they didn't seem to mind.
I’ve been to Japan twice, it’s very safe. Be polite and don’t make trouble, there fixed it..
