Thousands less than a Model Y? Wait till the end LOL. This was filmed prior to the price reductions on the Model Y but we *finished** the video after the price reduction so the new pricing is factored into our wrap up!
You forgot to pin this. For many buyers who qualify for the credit, the model Y actually experienced a $20,500 price reduction in a single day. It's impossible for any imported vehicle to compete with that, and nearly impossible for many domestic vehicles; especially if they don't qualify for the tax credit. The price had to be cut to $55k to qualify for the credit, but I'm not sure why they cut them to $53k. Now the AWD version is $45,500 after credit, and the performance version that doesn't qualify for the credit is $57k... $11,500 more. What in the world! They also increased the price of the third row option by $1000, from $3000 to $4000, making it the most overpriced option I think I've ever heard of in recent memory... outside of FSD. (For reference, the EQB's third row option is only $1250) Still, it'll be hard for a lot of people to pass up this deal, whether they can stand Elon Musk or not. After credit, it's the cheapest price the model Y AWD has ever been... when only 1.5 months ago it was the most expensive its ever been. Insane.... I imagine Tesla must have been vastly oversupplied versus demand. With their Texas plant now churning out about 150k model Y's annually and still ramping, with them building up a 60k vehicle inventory in the last 3 quarters (globally), with the economy heading into a major correction, with Musk's twitter antics / toxicity and repeated lying, and with their share price dropping (lots of shareholders buy lots of Teslas, and they're not happy with Musk/Tesla right now) the company didn't have the demand to move all of their supply. To maintain such high production growth, Tesla's cell order contracts from their suppliers must be massive and must be set to continuously grow month to month. They can't simply slow production growth to match demand, they have to keep pumping out more and more vehicles or risk building an enormous (and growing) battery cell inventory. Unlike other OEMs, they don't have a dealership network to offload inventory to and spread the financial burden across during a slow sales period; any inventory is on Tesla's books, which could be devastating on their quarterly financials. (Seems the dealership model isn't so silly after all.) Tesla has no choice but to drastically lower prices/margins on their cars to make certain they sell out. Maybe they'll make a tiny profit on them, maybe they'll break even, or maybe they'll even take a bit of a loss. Any of the above options are better than building up an inventory that they can never get rid of and taking huge losses. Super funny that Tesla stopped allowing customers to buy out their leases at the end of their terms, so they've likely been building a large used inventory of lease turn in vehicles that will also see their prices drop by a healthy amount to correspond to their new vehicle prices, along with just about every OEM now building inventory and lowering prices, and the prices of the used market tumbling over the last few months. How about Hertz anyone? They gloated about buying 100,000 overpriced model 3s starting in late 2021, the year of the crazy Tesla price hikes. (No doubt, their massive order helped push up the prices and push back the wait times) Supposedly they continued buying into 2022 as well. Rental companies typically only keep cars for 2-3 years, so in about a year or two when the company starts selling their fleet off, hooo boy could they take a big loss.
To make matters worst for Tesla; wage inflation has likely lead to Tesla hiring some pretty expensive manufacturing workers in their Texas ramp up. In economic contractions, companies usually layoff higher paid employees, then after the recession is over, they start hiring them back and lower wages. Tesla may not be able to do that because they can't afford to slowdown production. This is great for workers, but will be hell on Tesla's financials. Too bad, so sad. It's very possible that Musk simply didn't realize potential customers don't like him, or the the customers didn't believe that they'd have to be 'insane to buy anything other than a Tesla', as he famously said in 2019 when claiming a million robotaxis would be on the roads by 2020, making their owners $30k a year.

There were some price cuts at the end of Q4 as well, but nothing like their cuts at the beginning of Q1. Tesla Energy is a break even division at best that Tesla uses to offload excess cells to when they can't build enough cars for whatever reason. Since Tesla's cell orders need to continuously grow month to month, so too must their vehicle production, and if they estimated higher vehicle production, then they likely have a huge surplus of cells. The only way to get rid of that inventory quickly is to undercut competition, who are typically for-profit solar installers or battery producers who depends on their battery storage products to make profits. Tesla doesn't need their battery storage to make profits, so they can always bid the lowest and guarantee the contracts / retail sales. The silly part is how terrible Li-ion cells are for battery storage... They're extremely expensive compared to other energy storage solutions. What a waste of lithium-ion cells... I’ve had my Q4 E-Tron 40 (rwd) for over a year and 15k miles and it’s a fantastic family car. Real world range is between 220 and 270 miles, but with a bit of effort I’ve managed to get it as low as 130 miles and as high as 290 miles (videos on my channel). We went for the Q4 over the ID4 because we preferred the styling, the HVAC controls and the infotainment/virtual cockpit setup. We also preferred the Q4 to its other MEB based rival the Skoda Enyaq. All three are virtually identical in interior dimensions apart from boot/trunk space. Price wise (in Scotland )the RWD is significantly cheaper than the Model Y, but after the price drop the AWD 50 no longer has a price advantage. At that price point I’d probably go for the model Y.🤔🏴
Depends on your family though. Lots of reports are now coming out that Model Y interior materials are not very sturdy and don't age very well. My -lovely- family would probably make quick work of it. (Pictures and testimonies show model Y leather easy to scratch and even puncture :[] ). In this way be glad you have a Q4 which is said to have a really high quality interior.
Hey Alex, just a quick request/suggestion. Your “vehicle length” comparisons (at 1:17) are always the best, but could you also include a ICE mainstream vehicle like a RAV4? I know the intention here is to compare against EV segment competitors, but it would be helpful just to have the mental reference to something that’s super well-known.
@@naveenthemachine Obviously. I only used RAV4 as an example to have a point of comparison to something that's a very well-known quantity, not that the two vehicles are exact segment competitors. Although there is the RAV4 Prime Unobtainium Edition that approaches this price point.
The Q4 e-tron was supposed to have a heat pump, but they are apparently being shipped without one due to “chip shortage”. At least those are the industry reports.
I’m squarely the target market for the Q4. +60 mile commute, garage for home changing, and hate the spartan interior, edgy no door handle styling, big iPad controls of most EVs. This is the first EV I ever considered, and now I’m on the wait list. 😊
Hopefully you will get it soon. I ordered mine in Norway 1st of december 2021 and I still haven't received it. Audi can not even tell me when it will go into production. Will probably cancel my order and buy something else.
I loved the thought of the Q4 e-tron initially. The price increase, for Audi and now the Tesla price decrease have me rethinking. And I saw an article that stated the Q4 e-tron is losing it's heat pump. That is definitely a must in colder climates.
The one thing that every reviewer I have watched never speaks about is after sales service. I don't know what it is like in the USA but here in Canada Tesla aftersales service is not great at all but service from Audi is over the top fantastic. If you ever get into an accident with a Tesla, well good luck to you and the same goes with any service issues. With the Audi, the experience is 100 times different and you have way less down time. That's why the insurance for an Audi is way lower than a Tesla. We absolutely love our Q4 e-tron 50 Sportback and have zero regrets in buying it.
Just got my Audi Q4 Etron Sportsback! I made a contract Jan 2022, then Russia waged war on Ukraine (metal cages made there). I feel like I am in a spaceship headed to a galaxy far far away! Love it!
Just test drove the sport back version yesterday. The fact that it is NOT a Tesla is what I like about it, plus the comfort, luxury, handling, styling… My only gripe is they have 5 “sport back” variants sitting on my local dealer’s lot and no normal ones currently, and to me it looks like an ugly Tesla knockoff for $5k more and less headroom. The charging is ok (“middling” is quite apt) but I can charge at work easily, and a 30 min charge session is nbd to me if I take it on an occasional trip.
I test drove both the ID.4 and Q4 eTron and quite frankly liked the ID.4 entire package more. At the time of the test drive, the Q4 was missing the front camera (blamed on the chip shortages) and now I’m reading they’ll be removing the heat pump in favor of a resistive heater. Sounds like way too many compromises for the price point imho
21:18 I’m curious about the Q4 e-tron, but my ‘21 ID4 Pro S AWD is a great car I can drive now. The HUD and some of the interior bits are the only things that appeal to me instead of my ID4.
Luckily i live in Canada, we can get Tax credits on all these cars still and even if that changes, VW is building its new power plant inland soon so we still get the credit anyway if the Govt goes all protectionist Canada
No, Audi's second row is more comfortable - the seatbacks are angled further, compared to VW's more upright position. I think it'd help with the car seat placement, too.
Alex, I would love to see your ID.4 vs Q4 comparison. I have ordered an ID.4 ProS AWD and ended up not waiting for it and getting a Q4 50 Premium Plus, just before the Tesla's ball drop. Despite some obvious material cost cutting in the Audi's cabin (esp. door panels) I find the interior design worthy of the luxury segment. The steering seems lighter in the ID.4, and Audi has an obviously better software- and dashboard design. But then, there are also these incentives ID4 does qualify for. What's the better buy, according to you?
I too wish he would have done more comparison with the ID.4 -- particularly since the two are both built by VW on VW assembly lines (much like the eTron RS is an Audi version of the Taycan). It seems like there are advantages to the ID.4 -- including both price and free charging (which he did mention) -- and also the massaging seats on the ID4. Also, with the current ID4 being assembled in the US, it gets the tax credit while the eTron does not.
@@davidnielson9139 sure, it's a very sensible comparison. I just tested both back to back and have to admit that, despite the similarities, Audi does feel more premium, mostly due to the real leather seats, better overall interior design (although the dash and door insert materials look less premium compared to the VW's leatherette), better driver display and overall software/hardware approach with buttons, where needed. Audi also has a more expressive exterior design, although the large fake grille is a matter of taste. I also liked Audi's solid stance, VW seems lighter and more playful, it's a bit louder at speed (Audi has dual-pane acoustic glass windows). However besides massaging seats, VW also has park assist that Audi lacks. Both are in need of multi-view cameras or at least the front view one - my Bolt EUV's software, auto-selecting camera views based on the front/reverse shifting, its auto-on heated seats/st. wheel and efficiency analysis display is far better than both of the above VW Group siblings.
@@disla25 The top end ID4 does have 360 cameras, as well as three zone climate control and heated rear seats. I don't doubt the Audi seems nicer -- it should for the price difference. The top end ID4 RWD and AWD are roughly the same price as the equivalent base Audi Q4s. Considering the European ID4s have always had the same heads up display, in most ways the ID4 has been better equipped than the equivalent Q4s (other than maybe in the US).
@@davidnielson9139 Sure, you're right! How much is it the Plus, $57-58K after the January price increase? I wouldn't have bought a Q4(even considering a decent discount I negotiated), if Tesla dropped prices a week sooner - it certainly wins against every EV, due to the range-, charge speed and price advantages now.. Who knows what they pull come March. I also know plenty of people really hating Tesla's single screen "dashboard".
Alex, is the price comparison you made early in the video (Audi vs Tesla) *after* Elon lowered prices by almost 20% on the Model Y? Ok, you answered the question near the end of the video in the pricing section. Thanks!
"thousands of dollars less than a Tesla model Y" - I think this changed recently, because I'm seeing the Tesla come in WAY cheaper than this (in the USA anyway), at $53k vs almost $71k for the Audi. Video was probably recorded before that change but a correction probably should have been edited in since it's been this price at least a few days.
Neck snapping is not enjoyable in my opinion 😂 Really excited to get this in the new couple of months as a regular driver. Very cool to see the parchment beige interior in videos too!
I currently own a Model Y Performance, and yes, it has FSD Beta. Between the Q4 and the Model Y, I'm still sticking with the Tesla. Very interesting how Toyota seems to be copying VW comparing ID.4 and Q4 e-Tron with Toyota bZ4x and RZ450e. The Model Y and Mach-e are standalone. And then the Korean Trio feels in the middle somehow.
As an Audi fanboy, (2017 A3 eTron PHEV), thank you for the review of the Q4. Even though Tesla has lowered the price, the Q4 has an opening sunroof, and doesn’t show up as an EV to the motoring public in the other lane. The Tesla car is a virtue signaling device, just like the iconic Prius in the old days. Also, the Tesla is still more expensive, but I will confirm that next week with quotes from the Audi dealer and Tesla.
I bought this etron 50 AWD including magnetic ride suspension. new from China, top spec, with logistics to my country and all additional payments it was $41k for me. That's a hell of a vehicle for the price. EU prices are almost double
Great video, as always. Love the emphasis on ride quality. Would like to see a comparison video against the EQB, which seems like the most natural competitor to the Q4, but gets more range and is cheaper as equivalently spec'd.
Not being designed as an EV from the beginning, the Audi Q4 Etron has deficiencies, one of which is aerodynamics, which accounts for the non-competitive range figures.
That's a complete lie do some research before talking nonsense. Q4 is based on the MEB platform (with ID.4 and Skoda Enyaq) which was full electric from the beginning
Audi. No question. Tesla just seems too whimsical and unpredictable (not in a good way) in everything it does. I just don't have faith in it as a carmaker that I'd like to do business with.
The Q4 E-tron looks great however with the lack of the front trunk, less leg room in the rear, the Tesla Model Y is the way to go!! I think there are too many perks for the Model Y and especially since they drop the prices back down someone has to twist your arm to get anything other than the Tesla when going electric.
Tesla with the CCS1 adapter is the way to go. Teslas by far have the BEST of both charging networks. I have a May 2022 LRY and Love it. The suspension is a little stiff, but the ones made after October 2022, I think have the softer suspension.
We don’t need to hear that. Tesla sells plenty of cars. It doesn’t need to be only one brand. But Tesla fans feel the need to brag incase someone like another brand .
@Mark Fitzpatrick Mark, I like all EV'S regardless of brand. Just stating a fact about Teslas with the CCS1 adapter has access to all the DC fast chargers, so Teslas have the best networks. In time there will be more CCS1 chargers and Teslas with the NACS & CCS1 will have the advantage over a CCS1 only vehicle.
Right before I ordered Q4, Tesla dropped the price. Even though I really appreciated Q4 interia, I ordered Tesla Model Y long range for the tax credit.
When luxury brands are cheaper, you know you’re screwing up. The more electrified cars become the more expensive they get to the point that people wont be able to afford full size SUVs anymore.
But that does not matter to many people. It is fast enough and most people do not take road trips. Instead you get more luxury, features and better ride and build quality.
Don’t make excuses for the Europeans. They don’t want to spend the extra R&D on packaging. These are the same people responsible for dieselgate mind you.
Good. I hate most modern evs due to them being tech showcases. Just give me a damn regular car with a battery instead of a gas tank. I'm gonna be holding onto my 2020 ioniq EV for this very reason. Maybe when the base model EV pickups roll out and I can get one that's isn't designed by a child with a technology obsession
While looking at EV's recently, we immediately disqualified this one because the dash is so awful; geometric plastic angular bits tilting in all different directions. It's really a huge miss. It's not a nice place to sit at all. Feels more Toyota than German on the inside. Another weird thing is that you can see the exterior paint color around the door jams on the inside of the car. Cheap. And the software is extremely dated. Have they not seen Rivian and Tesla?
This seems like a really hard sell vs an ID4. The styling isn’t substantially better, especially with all the tacky black plastic and fake grill on the front. The interior isn’t substantially better than the ID4 except for the gauge cluster . It’s smaller than the ID4 in actual, usable space. The performance, battery size and range is all similar (probably slightly worse) than ID4s with the same drivetrain/battery. I just don’t see the reason to buy this over the ID4. Just brand snobbery I suppose. For the price of this thing, I don’t see the reason to buy this over the egmp cars. Even my boxy Ioniq5 gets about the same range as this (with a smaller battery in the Ioniq5) but the Ioniq5 charges basically twice as fast 10-80% and comes with 2 years of free charging. Styling is subjective, but the Ioniq5 and EV6 both look better than this inside and out, and they both cost less. Of course, with the recent Tesla price reductions, the Model Y has also rejoined the chat to become competitively priced with other EVs in the same category (finally). If you’re ok with the bloated Prius styling of the Model Y and the overly harsh suspension, that might be a good option as well (especially with the built in route planning and Supercharger access, better for ICE converts who don’t want to think about where they’re going)
The Q4 could have been a good car but is ruined by Audi cost cutting, fit and finish is not up to Audi's usual standard. Compare the fit and finish inside an S-line A4 to an S-line Q4, then compare the standard equipment and see the long list of things you don't get in the Q4, even down to only 1 reversing lamp and no clamps in the cup holders! But it's totally ruined by the software, so many bugs, lack of functionality compared to the competition and worst of all Audi don't update it.
The Audi Q4 E-Tron is a good car, not a great car. Cheap plastics in the lower door trims and grossly over priced options that push the 50 S-Line over £ 60K is hardly a ringing endorsement for a small family SUV.
Ice vehicle converted in to electric. Which is a good idea for all legacy manufacturers to do, at first. Before making new expensive dedicated platform.

Infrastructure over here is pretty good with non-Tesla chargers available in a lot of locations, and a national network (for payment, the chargers are privately owned/operated) which can be accessed by a single RFID card or app🏴
Hard to get excited by anything Tesla makes as long as that lunatic Musk is the CEO. He has an annoying tendency to run his dumb mouth and make the resale value of his cars drop. Random price drops don't help in that regard either, and I would feel very much betrayed if I just bought a Tesla and he dropped the price 5-10K!
The love Audi seem to have for all these fake bits seem to have no limit. Note to Audi, get rid of the useless grill and fake intakes. Its not the 1970s. Anyway, I pretty much stop listening at under 300 mi range. Less than that, places it squarely as a strictly commuter vehicle. Test have shown that the infrastructure isn't reliable enough to use an electric vehicle on a road trip.

@@royvan6224 when the car is plugged in isn't the issue. Heating the cabin when traveling is less efficient without a heat pump.
Up here in Canada, a Model Y AWD is 61-62k. A Q4 55 AWD starts at 68.4k. Most are 73-77k.
Love mine, you nailed everything I love and not so much love. Range and charging is perfectly adequate for road tripping. And super comfortable
Why so critical? I’ve been driving the Q4 Enron 50 Quatro. It was the very best I have ever tried. The Q4 50 Quattro will be my electric car
Thanks for reviewing this. Love the way it looks. Not a lot of reviews on this one for some reason. It is just a fancy ID 4.
The rain is over and get the video rolling again. great review as always! stay safe!
Would love for you to do a review of the 2023 Tesla Model Y with the new comfort suspension.
Booked Q4 prestige for 66k. Now model Y comes at 57 minus rebate. Why should I keep my booking even if I were to lose 1000 booking amount?
Is there any negatives with the Q4 etron regarding RWD with ice/snow ?
I test drove both the ID.4 and Q4 eTron and quite frankly liked the ID.4 entire package more. At the time of the test drive, the Q4 was missing the front camera (blamed on the chip shortages) and now I’m reading they’ll be removing the heat pump in favor of a resistive heater. Sounds like way too many compromises for the price point imho
ID.4 software is C-, that's what ruined it for me. It's very laggy and buggy.
all q4 has resistive heater...... the heat pump won't work under really cold temperature...... so the resistive heater go on
21:18 I’m curious about the Q4 e-tron, but my ‘21 ID4 Pro S AWD is a great car I can drive now.
I have no issues fitting rear facing child seats in my ID4 behind me (6ft driver), is the Q4 somehow smaller in rear seat room?
No, Audi's second row is more comfortable - the seatbacks are angled further, compared to VW's more upright position. I think it'd help with the car seat placement, too.
What about leasing and getting $7500 taken off the capitalized cost?
Was wondering when you were going to review this. I already see them at the local dealer. Usually you get access months ahead of release.
Long story short. Its an ID4 with an audi interior and exterior
It seems like this is a very nice EV, if range, speed and the charging network are not important it wins vs the Y. I think that includes many people.
Range speed and charging infrastructure I super important, that's why model 3 or y win every time
Alex, I would love to see your ID.4 vs Q4 comparison.
@@disla25 The Plus RWD is $51,445, the Plus AWD is $55,245 currently.
Alex, When does the Automotive Tax Planning channel launch? 😉
Did you watch the whole video? He talks about updated pricing at the end
Neck snapping is not enjoyable in my opinion 😂 Really excited to get this in the new couple of months as a regular driver. Very cool to see the parchment beige interior in videos too!
Really a nice design and stands out in the crowd but of course the range is on the low side.
What a relaxing review
Like someone below said, please review a model Y with the new comfort suspension, it updated last OCT
How do you think the Q4 compares to the upcoming Cadillac Lyric?
... Which is a sedan, according to IRS 🙄🤣 and doesn't qualify for the credits - what a nonsense
Shout out to Rich Rebuilds for showing the world what étron means in French 😂
Alex, I know this is the wrong channel to ask for it but please! Review an Audi Q8
I love the looks of every car of Audi
I’d still go with European gasoline models like Q5 PHEV. They don’t seem to have built any hot-selling EV models so far…
Great video, as always. Love the emphasis on ride quality. Would like to see a comparison video against the EQB, which seems like the most natural competitor to the Q4, but gets more range and is cheaper as equivalently spec'd.
EQB 350's range is smaller and its peak charge rate is lower.
I love the EQB design but even the new 250+ model still has much shorter range than the Q4 40.
Just ordered one, looking forward to silent motoring next summer!
I’d take a 7” shorter vehicle that also is more pedestrian friendly over one with a frunk.
Suspension though 😂😂
Great review!
Right before I ordered Q4, Tesla dropped the price. Even though I really appreciated Q4 interia, I ordered Tesla Model Y long range for the tax credit.
Can you make a video on Q8 Etron?
When luxury brands are cheaper, you know you’re screwing up. The more electrified cars become the more expensive they get to the point that people wont be able to afford full size SUVs anymore.
I can only speak for the ID.4, but the Q5 is so much quieter.
Have you reviewed the Mercedes EQA as an alternative.
In this price class, the range and acceleration just aren’t competitive, IMO.
But that does not matter to many people. It is fast enough and most people do not take road trips. Instead you get more luxury, features and better ride and build quality.
@@gregkramer5588 It definitely matters to people who are shopping for an Audi, or any German automobile.
@@rottinjonny It compares fine to the EQB and we have not seen BMW in this space yet.
GV70 EV: Made here, Charges Faster, Looks Better…a no brainer.
Katy Perry "Electric" on your Playlist
Quick correction Alex: Genesis GV60 includes 3 years of FREE 30 min sessions at Electrify America.
It is much more expensive than Tesla Model Y after the $7500 tax credit.
Is that a hood prop on a luxury Audi?!
For a $50-60k car, the Tesla build quality is totally unacceptable, and their battery duration in Winter is half of the stated figure.
Hello Alex!
Don’t make excuses for the Europeans. They don’t want to spend the extra R&D on packaging. These are the same people responsible for dieselgate mind you.
The Model Y's Interior is UGLY.....Q4 Etron looks like an expensive SUV with style
Spec it the same as a model Y, and its 1000s more than a model Y
Not a fan of the new gen Audi interiors. They don't look really luxurious anymore.
But they’re still way more luxurious than Lexus these days
I’ll take my MME with its 277 mile range 346HP 0-60 in 4.8 seconds, front trunk.
They are nice too, different for audience to me.
WAS less expensive than the Model Y. A comparably equipped Y is now less expensive.
Watch to the end...
👍🏻⚡👍🏻⚡
Ice vehicle converted in to electric. Which is a good idea for all legacy manufacturers to do, at first. Before making new expensive dedicated platform.
It’s built on the MEB platform which is electric only 🤔🧐
@@edinreviews oh .it looks so much like their ice vehicles. But that's good
@@tonyn3227 yeah they’ve put a “normal” Audi on an EV platform. Interior is all the usual Audi software too. It should be a good strategy- won’t scare off existing Audi owners in the showroom 👍🏻🏴
@edinreviews it's just OK, overpriced fir what you get, bad range, and not to talk about awful non tesla charging infrastructure. I think I'll just get model 3 ,
@@tonyn3227 depends where you are and what spec you get. I live in Scotland and I’ve had my Q4 40 (rwd) for over a year and 15k miles. It’s been fantastic. Far more practical than a Model 3, and far cheaper than a Model Y. If I had the money for the Q4 50 though I would probably take the Model Y instead as prices are close following the price drop.
Hard pass. 👎🏿
Crap range, fugly, and grossly overpriced. 🤮
GM Equinox is $25,000 ( after government rebates), massive 513 KM range, large dealer network, and looks better. ✅
LOL, There is a reason that the base Equinox is $25k. Crap interior, 0 miles of electric range, seems like a crossover version of an economy car.
I've been test driving a number of cars and I have to say I was totally underwhelmed by this car. The drive the style and interior....very forgettable car.
It's not too dissimilar to the ID.4 and that's not the most memorable EV either. -Travis
That plastic grille. Audi and BMW looks cheap and ugly nowadays.
