I actually bought a Q8 e-tron, it is a great car, no complaints, and from the outside it looks very good, away from EV usual styling. Just a comment, I have found EV manufacturers have a tendancy to hide the true weight of their cars, i weighted my Q8 e-tron, it weights 6’000 lbs (no passengers, no cargo). it is a heavy car, but like most EVs in this range. Do not go by the manufacturers weight indication. Air suspension in these heavy EVs is a must to cope with the extra weight.
great review as always. just to chime in on your question about motor whine. I am an owner of one of these with 7000Km so far. - the motor whine is artificial, for pedestrian safety. I agree with you that it is very loud and the most noticeable noise coming into the cabin. you can actually disable it by removing a fuse on the passenger footwell. - with respect to efficiency: I have noticed a very interesting pattern. Q8 etron is more efficient on the highway than city (provided that one stays below the speed limit). my average for highway is around 18-19 kwh/100km for highway vs 22-23kw/100km for city driving. the only explanation that I can think of is that on the highway, and in efficiency mode, the car disengages the front motor, hence better efficiency. - wheel size seems to play an important role in efficiency. I have the 20" wheels as opposed to all the press cars you folks get which is 21", and I see a big discrepancy between my numbers and what bloggers/youtubers report.
Couple notes as I owned both a 2021 e-tron and now a 2024 Q8 e-tron: - every person I've had in the car loves the sound of the "motor" sound, they say it sounds "futuristic" and I love it too - The Q8 is more efficient than the previous generation. I used to get 2.4 - 2.7 mi/kw and now i average 2.7 - 3.0 mi/kw, which explains why they only increased the battery by about 15-20% but range went up almost 30%. It feels like it's related to rolling resistance and aero - In terms of wheels, larger wheels equal larger linear velocity but equal radial velocity. That means that the motor spins at the same speed but you'll go faster/farther so having larger wheels will help there.
I just had a flat tire and used the fix-a-flat kit included with my car to fix it. No way would I go back to dealing with a spare tire. No jacking the car, no emptying the trunk to get to the spare tire, and none of the useless weight that the spare tire has. The fix-a-flat kit took about 10 minutes to use, and I was back on the road.
Yep! I have several friends that waited until these were about 3-4 years old and then they bought them at dirt low prices and just purchased an aftermarket car warranty for them.
I love your 1 pedal drive rants. The Q8 has my favorite implementation of regen -- coasting by default and blended braking. Totally agree about micromanaging your foot to coast in 1PD. It's annoying! I'd rather coast by default and only slow down when I tell the car to slow down.
Alex and I find ourselves in disagreement on this issue but I think the best solution is to have both options available. Full 1 pedal driving mode and full coast as an option as well. It's down to software (except for manufacturers like Tesla or Rivian who don't have blended braking). -Travis
Thanks for a thorough review and comparisons. I took delivery of a Q8 10 days ago. I liked the fairly low price, and that is has 30 miles more range than the base Merc EQE SUV. I do think the Bang & Olufsen sound system is quite good and the comfy suspension and quiet cabin are great. I would add that the regen from the paddles is stronger than on earlier e trons. With the appropriate settings it comes close to one pedal driving, which i like. IF I had unlimited funds I would have gone for the top spec BMW iX. but the Q8 is better value for my money. It's main weakness is that the MyAudi app has a very poor reputation among e tron owners. The MyBMW app is superior.
The MyAudi app is a complete joke. Your current respect for Audi will soon depart as you realize it simply does not work. Get ready for several visits to the dealership and dozens of wasted and frustrated hours.
Although it’s among the older designs I think this is is still my favorite overall EV. I just wish they’d offer a creep mode like every other ev. Also wish they’d fixed that center console stirage
I think the issue most people are not mentioning is that the Audi e-tron / Q8 e-tron will not receive OTA updates while most of the competition can. It may not matter to some, but, if you are paying $75K+ for a vehicle, it's nice to know it will get better over time via software.

30:00 On the comparisons I do believe the EQE SUV gets more interior goodies standard than the Q8 does (like the Bermester sound system) so I don't think they're that far off one another.
The new Model X pricing just missed the cutting room floor. Would have liked to hear your thoughts base to base as they are the same price after credits
I am not a SUV person - the Audi is most close to an ICE Version which is very attractive for many buyers. I also like the iX (even the front is growing on me because its different and clever) but its very expensive over here with Leasing - the iX 40 thought is too limited in range, power and charging - I had the iX 50 for a while which was good.
Great video as usual, I think since Tesla just did a huge price drop on the X that this competes very directly now. (I know it happened after this video was filmed/edited)
I don't buy the argument that no automatic regeneration is better for energy economy than one pedal driving. The mileage of the Q8 e-tron bears this out; it stinks compared to a Model Y or X.
I think you're referring to one pedal driving when you say automatic regeneration but just because the vehicle doesn't utilize one pedal driving doesn't mean it isn't using regenerative braking. It's simply a different way to utilize the same system. The mileage for this Audi isn't "less" because it doesn't have one pedal driving. -Travis
I'm on my second EV over a 6-year period and consider myself pretty knowledgable about EVs. I have known what you just said to me above for years, but it is clear I did not really "understand it" until just now. Your response to me cleared up a lot of things for me. I can now see the Porsche/Audi logic much more clearly, especially the part about being able to utilize free-rolling much more easily with their brake pedal initiation of regeneration, rather than always operating in one-pedal driving mode, which would require shifting to neutral for free-wheeling (not recommended). THANK YOU for clearing that up for me. All the best.@@AAutoBuyersGuide
It’s the same old interior from 2019 model, nothing new! Got rid of mine when the rear motor started going out. It’s to slow for price, best riding car on a trip. The dealer said the motor getting noisy was normal. It stated doing it at 42,000 miles. Go scared of it, so I traded it.
@@ALMX5DP There was an issue with gear noise, the dealer first said it would take 2 months to get a part, kept my car 3 days then said it was normal sound, as the motor assembly aged!
I dont know where you get your values from but Audi has 226mm (8.9 inch) Ground clearance with 20 inch tires (226mm (176mm + 50mm)). So it should be the same like the BMW IX with 223mm.
How would you compare this to the electric gv70,seems like this is a solid competitor to the audi. Anyway thanks ,your reviews are always very thorough.
Funny. I was recently in a Genesis showroom seeing the GV70 in person. The first thing I thought of is its resemblance to the Q8 Etron. Overall size and form factor(not including style) is strangely similar.
The shared upper/lower screens is really unfortunate. Seems like a prime example of a poorly designed GUI that would impact the driver's attention in a dangerous way. Car manufacturers need to carefully design GUIs to require the fewest interactions possible.
At this price point, over 105 kwh battery and 5 years of research not crossing 300 miles in most trims is kind of lame. Just about anything at lesser price points beats it. Even it's own Q4 gets 265 miles.
The polestar 3 is the way to go in this segment for sure. It’s going to be the sportiest when you factor in handling / speed. Right up there with the IX m60. But the IX m60 Is quite a bit more money. The polestar 3 also looks the best, by far
well - let it get one the road first, see reviews, test-drive it and then make a judgement. Said - I love the design as well - looks really good, it will be on my shortlist if the pricing will be competitive
Alex, can you comment on this vs RZ450 in terms of luxury/comfort? I don’t care much about range or charging. I am happy with my Bolt range and charging (primarily commute 50 mile per day), but want to upgrade to a nicer car for my commute. Any comments on the older 19-23 fat etron would be helpful too, as I am shopping used vehicles.
I hate the grill on the BMW iX. The car just does too much. Everything but butter your toast. The options I wanted were bundled with a lot of options I didn’t want. The bundle was almost 8K, so it was a deal breaker for me.
Hi, A question… When you/they talk about range of EV cars it is with a 100% charged battery right? However, when you/they talk about charging %/time it is always up to 80%? So my question is, should you charge an EV to 80% or to 100%? If no one charges to 100%, one have 20% less range right?
The charging to 80% spec is informative because it's how you charge on road trips. The charging rate slows down as you approach full charge, so you're better off leaving the charger when you hit 80% (after 31 minutes) and continuing your drive, rather than waiting several hours to hit 100%. It's also courteous to the other people waiting to charge if there is a line.
@@jamesinsteamboat Thank you for your reply! If you only charge the battery to 80%, than you have to charge it more often so your argument about beeing courteus to others can’t apply?! And why is it that the charging rate slows down after 80%? I would like Alex to do an episode on EV batteries please! About: - Charging time (hurdles) - How many times can you charge a battery? - How many miles does a battery last? - What happens to the car when you can’t charge it enough any longer? - What will eventually happen to the battery? - Second hand value of an used EV (5 - 10 years). It must depreciate quite a lot and quite quickly since you can’t change the battery? Probably many more aspects to consider, both moneywise and environmental wise…
Charging times depends on the power of the fast charger. Level 2 are the ones you install at your garage or what you find at hotels and some convenience stores. They are proper way to charge most of the time to get your battery last and they need 8-10 hours to fully recharge a battery from 0% to full. There is no limit number of charges to the battery, it will degrade slowly and you'll get less miles with 100%. The Teslas model S that have been on the market since 2014 still run Al keep charging to 100%. With about 20% fast level 3 charging (the one you do on the road with 30-40 min from 10 to 80%) and the rest at level 2 you can reasonably expect about 90% of the original range after 150k and more than 80% at 250k miles. If you want to replace your battery, it will be at a dealership and those materials in the old one are quite valuable and they are starting to be recycled to produce new ones.
@@ThinQsome I think the critical information you are looking for is the fact that a properly engineered EV should only allow maximum charging speed when the battery is somewhere between 20%~80% state of charge (SOC) It's somewhat like how humans eat, when you are hungry for 24hrs (0% charge), you probably should start eating gently to get the digestive system to start working and you get to check if the system is still healthy, and then up to a point (20% SOC) you can eat as fast as you can, but at some point when you are about to get full (80% SOC), you need to slow down again. And the consumers always like want big numbers to compare, so the car makers give you the biggest numbers, which is 20%-80% charge speed/time And if you are on a road trip, you want to make sure you are charging at the maximum speed so the charge time is reduced to minimum, that means you try to stay between 20%~80% SOC.
Mercedes EQS is better, apparently quieter inside as well! But with quality comes a higher price! Also Rolls just released their new electric, with a higher range than Audi, so there’s that lol
Did you seriously just compare the most expensive S class EV and a Rolls Royce to this? They’re both far more expensive my dude.. I’d still take this over the EQS though, I do not like the look of that car
"In 2024 Audi has upgraded basically everything" - no they haven't 🤣 both models have a slightly bigger battery and slightly more range, other than that, they're the same! Same exterior (other than the weird new grill) and same exact interior. Same screens and UI, suspension, NVH, software, hardware, speakers etc. They didn't need to change anything else, as it was perfect to begin with
Audi makes good cars no doubt about it, but their EV styling with the exception of the E-Tron GT, are just boring looking and don't seem to age well IMHO.
Concerning the dynamic turn signals…if it’s required by law and Audi has a blinking light bar in addition to the sequential one, then why is the Ford Mustang and the Corvette allowed to only use the sequential light without a solid flashing light? Can’t be 2 laws in the US. Curious why the disparity.
I think the laws here require a certain amount of light surface area on the initial illumination. Mustang and Corvette have initial elements that are large enough where the first illumination is enough, whereas here the small progressive strip does not light up enough. This is why Lexus or some others have progressive decreasing lighting elements to get around the additional solid light that Audi uses here.
Funny thing, before they upgraded the e-tron with an update, it would have been in the same conversation with the RZ being a disappointment with the lackluster range. Now it's definitely a better buy compared to the RZ and some others.
Very beautiful SUV but in terms of the price, and uniqueness there’s no way gonna buy this vehicle, I rather get a Tesla or the original Audi Q8 gas model which looks 10 time better than this
The BMW is by far the best one of these, but the AUDI is almost as good for a good deal less. The Benz is overpriced and looks like butt, and the Tesla is ran by a crazy fool and feels like kit-car.
Audi never ceases to amaze me when it comes to their E-Tron crossover lineup. How they manage to design a car as good looking as the gas model Q8 and then proceed to have its E-Tron electric sibling look so boring and lame is a mystery to me. Give this thing the looks of the gas Q8 and then we'll talk.
He reviews new models, and there are a lot of new EVs. If he wanted to represent sales, he would have to have 40 videos on the RAV4 for every 1 video on the E-tron. That doesn't make any sense.

If you want to replace your battery, it will be at a dealership and those materials in the old one are quite valuable and they are starting to be recycled to produce new ones.

Thank you!

I think the critical information you are looking for is the fact that a properly engineered EV should only allow maximum charging speed when the battery is somewhere between 20%~80% state of charge (SOC)
It's somewhat like how humans eat, when you are hungry for 24hrs (0% charge), you probably should start eating gently to get the digestive system to start working and you get to check if the system is still healthy, and then up to a point (20% SOC) you can eat as fast as you can, but at some point when you are about to get full (80% SOC), you need to slow down again.
And the consumers always like want big numbers to compare, so the car makers give you the biggest numbers, which is 20%-80% charge speed/time
And if you are on a road trip, you want to make sure you are charging at the maximum speed so the charge time is reduced to minimum, that means you try to stay between 20%~80% SOC.
Alex, did I miss it or did you discuss the Tesla Model X in the price comparison section?
Mercedes EQS is better, apparently quieter inside as well!
But with quality comes a higher price!
Also Rolls just released their new electric, with a higher range than Audi, so there’s that lol
Did you seriously just compare the most expensive S class EV and a Rolls Royce to this? They’re both far more expensive my dude.. I’d still take this over the EQS though, I do not like the look of that car
Unless I was concerned about status, I’d go get two Kia EV 6’s instead of that.
Audi keeps making cars with ultra old and ultra small infotainment center that make you feel you are a a 10 years old car. I will go with mercedes.
How come this EV has more range in highway than city! 🤔
It seems to be a big focus on aero and a combination of the tire compounds and motor designs.
@@AAutoBuyersGuide Could also be an indication of inefficient recuperation.
They didn't need to change anything else, as it was perfect to begin with
Looks more like a previous model.
Audi makes good cars no doubt about it, but their EV styling with the exception of the E-Tron GT, are just boring looking and don't seem to age well IMHO.
The range and efficiency is still poor. I would really like to buy one, but they are still a generation behind already with being brand new.
Cant stand the seats in the BMW IX.
It looks really good in a restrained way. Wish it was faster
Isn’t that what the SQ8 model is for?
Audi offers this in SQ8 form
@@Trades46 I was referring to the base q8 e tron.
Funny thing, before they upgraded the e-tron with an update, it would have been in the same conversation with the RZ being a disappointment with the lackluster range. Now it's definitely a better buy compared to the RZ and some others.
Very beautiful SUV but in terms of the price, and uniqueness there’s no way gonna buy this vehicle, I rather get a Tesla or the original Audi Q8 gas model which looks 10 time better than this
New lower pricing on the Model X makes this Audi a foolish choice.
The BMW is by far the best one of these, but the AUDI is almost as good for a good deal less. The Benz is overpriced and looks like butt, and the Tesla is ran by a crazy fool and feels like kit-car.
they should add " burn time" when coming across the atlantic ocean...Like "burn time " after ignition.....7 days
Looks like an id4 from the side
Audi never ceases to amaze me when it comes to their E-Tron crossover lineup. How they manage to design a car as good looking as the gas model Q8 and then proceed to have its E-Tron electric sibling look so boring and lame is a mystery to me. Give this thing the looks of the gas Q8 and then we'll talk.
Audi’s interiors have gotten so cheap looking lately. $74k and yet a Mazda probably has a nicer interior than this.
Why is Alex testing so many vehicles that are only selling 14% of the market????
The vues
He reviews new models, and there are a lot of new EVs. If he wanted to represent sales, he would have to have 40 videos on the RAV4 for every 1 video on the E-tron. That doesn't make any sense.
Preach! LOL
Costs more than $20,000. Useless trash.
