Maybe there should be a biggest ‘catfisher’ award too. Sometimes the cover promises so much, looks so wonderful and then…nothing. I haven’t read any of these ones but I think I have the woman in the library and dating dr dil on my TBR so I will see. I only buy most books when they are 99p on kindle so it will be no loss if they are rubbish. But it’s good to hear other viewpoints even if I do end up liking them.

This Woven Kingdom by Tehereh Mafi. I feel it was like your experience with Holly Black. I have heard of her for years and always meant to pick up on of her books. This was about 500 pages of just vibes. Like where we spend an entire chapter of the love interest walking down a flight of stairs or the chapter where he fails at masturbating. Or the main character wining about everything but rarely ever doing something, or somehow looks like she's always bleeding but has clear blood.

The worst book I read this year (I DNF’d it at 12%) was easily the last hacker by Mark Whalbeck. I do not get much time to read for pleasure on account of being in college and a work intensive major, so the worst book I read this year was indeed a book I read for a class: Regarding The Pain of Others by Susan Sontag. This book could have been an email because she just repeated the same points over and over each chapter, and the pretentious, hit the word count on an essay writing style just cemented how much I did not like having to read this book.

Worst Re-Make, Sequel, Retelling : A HEART SO FIERCE AND BROKEN
Worst Author (Director) : Alissa Nutting for her book Tampa about woman child predator..the book was disgusting for shock value and cheap commentary. As an author for me she's redacted and blacklisted.

I haven't read any of the books here, but What Moves the Dead is on my tbr. As for the worst books of the year, I don't actually have many I have strong negative feelings on. I didn't hate any of my reads, but there were still some I didn't enjoy. But Fierce Fairytales by Nikita Gill, a more recent read, read like a first draft. A series of stories and poems that read like plans or ideas instead of the stories and poems they were meant to be. Apologies to say a book you like but The Bear and the Nightingale just didn't do anything well in my opinion and I am actually confused by the love it receives. Lastly, The Atlas Six which I found lacking. Those are the ones that comes to mind.

I enjoy worst book rants way more than best books, I guess I am a bitter, negative person 😂
My least favorite of the year was The Pallbearers Club. I was SO looking forward to it because parts of the plot are (loosely) based on local New England history. But it was ridiculously boring, nothing remotely spooky even happens, and I hated both main characters.

My worst book of the year would be Violet Made of Thorns by Gina Chen (YA Fantasy).
Wooden prose, bad pacing (nothing happens for the first 80 pages, and then we get one interesting event and back to boredom...), romance without proper development (enemies to lovers but we don't understand why are they enemies and why they become lovers either), lazy worldbuilding (mish mash of random common fairy tale elements), tone mismatch (slapstick comedy scenes in a theoretically atmospheric and brooding narrative), tokenism (token stereotypical lesbian side character, token brown-skinned guy), no resolution because author wants a cliffhanger ending to set up a sequel, meandering plot, protagonist who paints herself as "look what I need to do to survive" meanwhile she has a cushy job at the royal court, love interest with 0 personality...

There were 3 books that I absolutely abhorred and gave my first 1 stars to:
The Vicious Cycle by Katherine St. John (cult book that went off the rails, which says A LOT)
None Shall Sleep by Ellie Marnie (kids smarter than the FBI????)
The Other Woman by Sandie Jones (which was a Reese book club pick, and I found it completely laughable.)

My worst book of the year must've been something something Sigurd, this viking trilogy I found at a charity store. I DNFed at book 2 & dropped book 1 down to a 1 star after I fucking KNEW what would happen. & what happened exactly? The only woman in the group got together with the main character after her lesbian lover died right at the start of the book. Like, fucking hell! This book came out like in the early 2010s or something! & authors still put this bullshit 'bury the gays' shit so BLATANTLY into their works! & I thought the ending of Supernatural was on the nose, these boring, repetitive, dragging, characterless books hit you on the nose with an entire brick! & like the only interesting character at all doesn't even get any lore or character development, there is ZERO character development despite the amount of characters there are! They just keep on dying! Ugh, absolute bullshit

I browse reddit from time to time and I recall I think one on either bad writing or books in general that had an article about a guy who won the equivalent of the Razzies but its awards for bad books. Can't remember what its called though. Anyway his was labeled worst written sex scene cause it involved a chef eating some kind of cheese off a lady's nipple. Not sure why he thought that was sexy with all the foods to chose from for sex scene. Just something I wanted to share.

    Worst Book/Author
The Black Book Guide by Kingzman's Depiction. It's not just a completely misogynistic book but it was clear that the author did no research on potential reviewers that he requested to review his book. A quick scan of my blog would have shown that I am far from the target audience.
    Worst Continuation
Empire's Heir by Marion Thorpe-I found out that there is something worse than reading a book in the middle of a series that you haven't read the previous volumes and not knowing what is going on. . Reading a book in the middle of the series without reading the previous volumes and knowing instinctively that it's the weakest one in the series.
    Biggest Disappointments
And a couple of ones that were disappointments because I liked the authors' others works so much Vorodin's Lair by J.V. Hilliard, Tracy's Calling by Rob Santana, and The Price of Partisanship by Ian Conner.
    Worst Characters
Tracey's Calling by Rob Santana are the worst characters because I couldn't understand most of their motives half the time. Some were incredibly annoying.
    Weakest Plot/Subplot
Lexington by D.L. Nelson. It was nice to go behind the scenes of how historical novels are written and how it shows a woman put together a book about the Battle of Lexington. But she put a modern subplot in the book that did not tie into her writing or her historical fiction whatsoever.
For the most part, I liked most of what I read. I mean I had 40 books in my Best lists (20 per list) and even then had to make some painful cuts.

I know I read some pretty bad books this year ( I was doing a re-read of books I liked when I was 16) but This Woven Kingdom stands out as the worst thing. The writing wasn’t bad, but I read 70% of the book and nothing significant plot wise happened. And Mafi, the author, was absolutely torturing this MC, no family, no friends, no kingdom, her one joy in life, sewing (???) taken away from her because she was too good at it. Her life is one misery after another, but she’s also the most kind, gracious and beautiful thing on the earth. The biggest disappointments this year was the whispering dark, it was promising so much! Rivals to lovers ( how can you be rivals with your TA?) , boy falls first, mysterious deaths on campus, but the prose was a disjointed mess, that made this book unreadable to me. The other disappointment was the ones we burn, aside from the whole reverse racism call out, this book was just plain bad, how can even a knife to the throat scene fall flat??? And I hate that she made a victim of oppression the ultimate baddie, I get what she was trying to do, but the author really flamed out on this one!

    • @Vulphie
      @Vulphie ปีที่แล้ว

I disliked the whispering dark too! So many plot holes, like if the evil dude knew Laney could/would screw up his evil plans, why invite her to the school in the first place?!?! It definitely wasn't rivals to lovers or a retelling of Euridice and Orpheus, it was cringey YA tropes trying to be dark academia or fantasy horror and failing miserably.

my worst book read in 2022 is definitely dracula... yes dracula by bram stoker... the epistolary format of letters and journal entries add nothing to the story, all the characters write in the same way about the same things, so it makes no sense for the book to be written that way. also it bored me to tears, i love written horror but dracula didn't have any horror or sense of anticipation, all everyone cared about was how pure and pretty and perfect lucy and mina were, to the point that both their characters were redundant as just "pretty defenseless women dracula preys on". also the ending was basically a "and everybody lived happily ever after" which is just bonkers for a horror, it's so soooooooo stupid. i hate this book and everyone that made it be a horror classic
