Wow… that is so powerful! Thank you so much for talking! I enjoy listening to you! God bless your heart! It’s not that I wish pain on those evil characters in your story. (Well maybe I do a little) but I wish there was an equivalent comeuppance exacted onto them by some benevolent n righteous force out there in the ether, or in the upside-down, or some slumbering presence deep in the earth! _ok enough talking out of my ass_ BUT!!! Hearing your story brought me to tears. It's heartbreaking to think that there are millions of people with similar and worse experiences still in North Korea today, and instead of taking you and other survivor's words as a warning we seem to keep heading into that same downward Spiral. God bless you for continuing to spread this truth
Wow… that’s powerful! God bless her heart! I wish I could bitch slap the pos Comrade Coward KIM! I cannot even begin to imagine what these ppl go through. We are so lucky in USA.
Yeonmi, you are a genuine American hero and an inspiration. It is my genuine prayer that you achieve the absolute fullness of the American dream. We are a greater nation for your presence.
I can’t image what it must be like to watch something as normal as ur kids playing with toys knowing that her child will have a normal childhood completely opposite of her own. She is such an inspiration. ❤❤❤
This woman is so brave. I feel so grateful for everything I have in my life. I have faith that God will punish the evil of this world and rewards the just of this world. “ the first shall Be last and the last shall be first” I wonder how the average leftist would respond to this testimony.
I grew up in the 1990s, to me, communism is what the USSR WAS all about (and it failed). I saw communism as some kind of alternate economic plan. When I went to university, I met some professors who were American and true believers in communism. While I accepted it was an ideology they agreed with, I did not agree with it (to each their own). Then it occurred to me, the very few people I knew who like the idea of communism, never offered up a plan to make it into a reality. In fact, all so called "communists" ever did, was complained about capitalism, but never offered a better or more efficient way to run society. I became even more disillusioned with communism and went from seeing it as a failed economic system, to a bad ideology that was not even a proper type of economy. To me, communism is just complaining, without any solid plan for a better alternative. I work in health care, I am good at my job, because I work hard and understand the science behind what I do. I would not be a better nurse by being "woke".
What a remarkable woman. She is so captivating and her story brought me to tears. Every single woke feminist in the western would should listen to her speak and then tell me how their lives are so oppressed and unfair; how a big bad man called them "honey" or how someone used the wrong pronouns and it hurt their feelings.. toughen up people. Let this woman be an inspiration to you. The human species is way more resilient than you think.
God bless you! Your story is completely heartbreaking and joyous all at the same time. I pray that those who wronged you and many others will be punished for their barbarism.
So many people appreciate your story and so many love to hear it. I have followed you for years now and appreciate your book and your appearances. Thank you for your contribution to letting people know, and keeping in touch with people like Dave Rubin, Epoch Times, and others.
Anyone who thinks she is lying need only to read the stories of those that survived the various soviet republics, the Khmer communists, the Albanian communists. Her stories are horrendous and her survival is amazing. But her story is sadly not unique. Quite the opposite it is remarkably common in the last 100 years.
I love these YAF videos and presentations. The question and answer sessions are great as you never know what's coming from these college students these days and the ideologies they force down our throats while hypocritically saying the right diminishes freedoms with their legislation.
This might just be the most harrowing personal account of suffering by the hands/machinations of corrupted humanity I've ever heard. My heart breaks for her, and yet it is followed almost immediately by a seething, visceral disgust for all the squealing socialist-simping asshats here in my own country that pine for the illusory utopia that they think they are cheering for. Man... Im glad she saw her efforts and suffering compensated by making it here.
Wow… that’s powerful! God bless her heart! And I am right beside you on the rage and loathing I feel inside me when I listen to these kind of truly harrowing stories. I wish I could bitch slap the bastard Comrade Coward KIM! I cannot even begin to imagine what these ppl go through. We are so lucky in USA.
I feel you, son. In the early 1980s I served in the USAF's Strategic Air Command. Our B52s and Minuteman III ICBMs stood poised 24/7/365 to unleash Armageddon against any Marxist enemy who would dare attack us or our NATO and Commonwealth allies. We made sure the bolshie rascals knew it well so they wouldn't get any bright ideas. When Mr Gorbachev tore down that wall we high fived and thought it was mission accomplished, SAC disbanded as a major command in 1991. Now we see our youngsters agitating for the same malignant ideology we defended their parents and grandparents against back in the day and wonder how the !@#$%&THAT happened????
She left a lot of what she went through as a child out of this one speech. Unless I inadvertently missed it. Like her and her sibling playing amongst a pile of dead bodies and it was a normal occurrence to them.
We are all in different races and colors, but 8 billion people on the Earth are humans like red blood. We need humanity feelings : Love and compassion to each other Love and kindness to each other Love and attachments each other Love and helpfulness to each others. Love to all 8 billion social animals - human beings.
We in eastern Europe still remember some misfortunes living under communism till 1989, but compared to her experience, it was like heaven. Young bored american and western european kids should listen to this. Insted of stupid leftiest propaganda they are fed with since childhood.

Recent incidents of forced repatriation of North Korean defectors in China are indeed deeply shocking. China's apparent disregard for the fact that these North Koreans could face severe consequences, even death, upon their return to North Korea is a clear violation of human values and human rights, which understandably arouses anger among people around the world. What's even more infuriating, however, is not just China's actions but also the indifference within South Korea itself. It's incredibly difficult to fathom the callous attitude towards fellow countrymen and North Korean defectors who are suffering right next door. Even as our compatriots starve to death or face deportation in China, it's bewildering how some Koreans can simply turn a blind eye and offer no assistance. I recently came across a post on a Korean community page on Facebook where someone expressed their anger over the unjust loss of innocent lives in Palestine due to the ongoing war. It's heartbreaking to witness innocent lives being lost in far-off countries due to war. However, at the same time, it's deeply hypocritical to see some Koreans display such empathy for distant tragedies while remaining indifferent to the suffering of their own neighbours. How can we empathize with the tragedies happening far away while ignoring the very real suffering of those right next to us? This selective interest and indifference come across as cold-hearted and hypocritical.
I know right! I imagine she does… I think she’s making a lot of money just sharing her stories. And that makes me happy that she makes more than me!! What’s that old quip/idiom about having to teach the kids about the perils of socialism/communism every generation… like it’s a right of passage almost hah “Always wear a condom and oh, communism is worse than the boogeyman!”
Its strange how she mentions nothing of The Japanese colonial period of Korea I wonder did her great grandfather work directly with the Japanese colonial government in Northern Korea?

Hearing amazing people like her talk is the precise reason I become so infuriated listening to pampered little brat American citizens whine and complain about how "hard" they have it and how "they're oppressed". People like that would crumble under the most minute amount of actual oppression. And it's even worse that the mainstream media is pushing the same narrative. It is a privelige to be an American citizen. There is NO American citizen that is not priveliged. I'm sick of people doing their best to be a victim. My mother raised me to always take responsibility for myself, my situation. Even if I get hit by a car while legally crossing a road. One way or another, I put myself there and it's my fault. Yes, there is fault elsewhere, but I cannot control that. I can control ME.
