I have always wondered what happened to Yeonmi's sister Eunmi. The book hints at a dark period in China and I wondered what it was. And how is she doing now? And their Mum too.
Yeonmi, thank you for letting other North Korean refugees share their stories. You are helping the world learn the truth about North Korea. Keep it up! :)
It is amazing, unfortunately, nowadays it became rare in NK for people to give food to the homeless kids and people, people are very cruel nowadays towards each other in NK post-COVID lockdown and post-border closure; many people wander around and eventually starve to death...it's surreal,as I'm writing this with literally my stomach full after a hearty lunch, and another hearty dinner is awaiting me in a few hours...simply surreal. Hope Kim pays and NK people see better days ahead. On a final side note, don't know why 12 eggs is a lot, my breakfast used to be 10 eggs with bread, salad, cottage cheese... nowadays I eat like 4,5,6....I'm not even fat or obese.
My wow moment in this video was realizing that basic geography isn't universal. Songmi talking about being from the interior of the country and not really knowing where the borders are, was eye opening, but completely understandable in hindsight. This is the first video I've watched on this channel, so I don't know anything about either of these people. That's soon to change, I ordered both of their books. This conversation is so fascinating I found myself not even paying attention to their beauty. Looking forward to these books.

THANKS, Yeomni for bringing this young lady to our attention. One thing ALL North Korean escapees have in common is that the all seem to be VERY NICE PEOPLE. And that is part of your strength.
It's truly a privilege to be able to see two women with the heart of a lion telling your stories about being able to escape such a treacherous and vile dictatorship. You are both major shining beacons to the world! ❤️
You are both so strong for getting through that and being so brave. I had very little knowledge of life in North Korea and this was heartbreaking but also I am so happy for you both and your freedom.

Later I did an MA-degree in International Relations on North Korea. In my opinion the world needs to know what is happening in North Korea.
Hi Yeonmi, I finally bought your book and finished listening to it on audible. You are the most brave person I've ever seen in my life, I don't even have words to describe how I feel about you. Your story is saddest story I've ever heard, before reading it, I couldn't even imagine the horrors you went through. You made me realize that I don't cherish my life enough, this made want to help others, I think I want to travel to those 3rd world country and find a way to help those who deserves better. Your story is really inspiring!
Just to put things into perspective: According to South Korea's Ministry of Unification website, over 33,000 North Koreans have arrived in South Korea over the past twenty-odd years - over 24.000 of them female. Those 33,000+ North Koreans didn't go to Pyongyang Airport and book a flight out. They undertook the same risks and difficulties as Yeonmi Park did to cross into China and eventually make the arduous journey to Thailand or Mongolia to claim asylum and be brought to South Korea. For female escapees in general, that included the risk or actual experience of being trafficked into s*x work or forced "marriage" to a Chinese bachelor. The difference is only that almost all of those other 33,000+ escapees didn't fashion themselves as celebrity defectors and write a book about it. They just moved on with their lives invisibly as you and I live our lives.
@@brucemcchundra8658 well I'm glad she is, infact I'm glad for every North Korean that tell their stories, by bringing awareness to the situation more people can help, these videos just need to get into the right hands at the right times. I'm not sure why you are mad about her writing a book. To this day, she is probably the person who has taught us the most about North Korea and she has to put herself in the most vulnerable position to do so. As far as I'm concern, you are on her channel, just as I am, so you most likely got curious about North Korea. You should be grateful for her willing to share such information. There are probably a thousand more stories like this but as you said, those don't fashion themselves about being a defector, so of course we won't know their stories. Tbh if I was in their situation I wouldn't want to be noticed either. That's why we need people like Yeonmi, she is their voice. I'm sure they are grateful.
@@brucemcchundra8658 Maybe it took brave individual to highlight it. The world needs to be made more aware of the plight of these poor people. To say that 33000 have remained silent and got on with their lives probably means that they haven't been given the opportunity to be outspoken, instead still living in dire circumstances in China or South Korea. Living invisibly in your life may be good for you, but speaking out about the worlds atrocities is some peoples lifes work. Best you maintain you invisible life I think if that's the bet you have to say
@@allomony4010 Firstly, the 33,000+ people are those whom the SK Ministry of Unification has counted as having arrived in SK. The 33,000+ doesn't include anybody in China. It means solely people who have been verified as having actually made it to freedom in SK. Those 33,000+ people are of course just a tiny proportion of the population of NK. However, at 33,000+ they are hardly rare in absolute numbers. I feel that some commenters are of the mistaken impression that people like Yeonmi Park who have escaped NK successfully are very rare, and Ms Park would likely be quite happy to let people erroneously assume that and to capitalise on mistaken impressions of her own "rarity". To my mind, those invisible other 33,000+ successful escapees also deserve to be acknowledged and given credit at least within our own minds.

For days I've been listening to survivor stories of people escaping NK and I'm sure there were angels with them. Unfortunately, not all of the made the journey. There's no other explanation for one who is starving to have the energy to travel, let alone avoid hypothermia from the cold weather and waters. These are truly miracles.
I often wonder about my mom's family that got split up. Some got pushed into N. Korea, some were "departed" by Chinese or Japanese soldiers, and some walked on foot further in S. Korea while still getting shot by U.S. soldiers. It was many years of fleeing, no fires to cook or keep warm because that would attract attention. ..my mom still remembers it, having to walk on foot and seeing so many deceased people and being shot at. I'm glad she made it here and became a (very proud) citizen. I know my grandma worried about her sister that was forced into N. Korea. One can only hope she was able to escape from there too.

To begin with, I'm from Turkiye, and although I knew how dictatorship in North Korea instill fear and terror to its people, it was just overwhelming to listen what you've been through, and people of North Korea still has to go through... And, sincerely appreciate what you told about freedom, virtue, discipline, meaning at the end of that interview. I pray no harm comes to none of you guys who keep up the fight against the regime of North Korea. Keep up the good work 👏
Amazing story. I love both these ladies. Such an inspiration, both of them. Keep pressing forward -- being a shining light for others who live in darkness. God bless.
Lots of love to you, from India, Yeonmi. You are so sweet 😘❤️
She may not pronounce things well, but Yepi has an impeccable vocabulary and uses her speech better than most Americans. You can tell she is intelligent and continuously reads quality material
Im Hudson from Brazil and now I got here in your channel , you have a great life. Be happy !!!
Both of you ladies have inspiring stories. I wish for you both to find a safe and happy life.
Welcome! To the USA! Glad to see a new video Yeonmi!
Such an incredible story your bravery is second to none to have survived the horrific life you did is so commendable, and people are still living in horrific conditions, we are so privileged to live free , we will never truly appreciate it as you do
I was just crying so hard at your simple but powerful moment sitting on the walkway in Canada watching the people, the families walk by, and realizing you were experiencing what love looks like and what it should feel like and then to have love directed at you with a simple Hello from 2 strangers. And you are so humble and unassuming that you didn’t even realize someone could intend something like that for you, so you looked behind you to see if it was meant for someone else. 😭 I am from Canada and I am so happy you had that moment here in this country. The whole world needs these simple moments to heal itself of all horrible, oppressive tyrant dictator narcissists. Please take care of yourself and come back to Canada anytime:)
Chapter 26 of Greenlight to Freedom is about her Canada experience! As we worked on the book the Canada chapter was probably the most fun. A few weeks ago when she gave a speech in Tennessee, she mentioned that Canada was still the happiest experience of her life.
@@CaseyLartiguejr more tears 😭 Thank you for this. And I’m so thankful there could be a place like Canada where it’s people developed to a point where they had the knowing to show someone love. We can never take our fellow humans for granted or doubt how much love each of us needs in every moment, and what someone who wants to stop that is ultimately trying to achieve
“What do you remember from going to school in North Korea?”
“Actually, I couldn’t remember anything from elementary school because at that time I was really, really hungry.”
This made a grown man cry.
Hi Yeomni from England.
It would be so interesting to hear the mother's side and her experiences.

She looks super Zen. I'll buy the kindle version this week. I hope she is happy.
Awesome! Please let us know what you think about it.
One of the wonderful things about the internet has been the ability to study North Korea. I love the individual stories but look forward to the big story when all of the people of North Korea can join the free world. Thank you ladies for talking about your lives and the horror of all of the dear leaders. Just for moments when I hear your stories, I get it but for you two and all that have come, you get it all the time. Please keep telling your stories and I will as well. You make a difference.
북한의 극악무도함을 알려주시는데 힘을 써주셔서 정말감사합니다.. 꽃길만 걸으세요!!
So proud of u guys how u escaped
I am so happy for both of you being free and you are amazing! I wish all North Koreans could be free🤍sending you a lot of hugs from Romania
If only North Koreans could at least humiliate Kim Jong-un as Romanians courageously did to Ceaușescu on 21 December 1989.
Watching from India #தமிழ்நாடு
We together pray for the people of North Korea
thank you for sharing your story. you are my hero
. Goodluck ladies. Keep sharing your story
My heart breaks for your people especially with winter coming on.
To the guest- Welcome to the USA! It's wonderful to see someone real!
I have the bell clicked and everything and I haven't been getting notifications of uploads nor have your uploads shown up in my subscription list!
So glad you are both safe. ❤
Welcome . . . another Escapee . . May there be many more
According to the website of the South Korean government's Ministry of Unification, over 33,000 North Koreans have arrived in South Korea over the past 20-odd years. While they are only a tiny proportion of North Korea's population, they are hardly rare people in absolute numbers.
omg finally I love you guys 💜💜💜💜
Yeonmi, I just watched you interview with Jordan Peterson and it was so incredibly moving and eye-opening. The fact that people like you and Songmi tell us your stories help us gain a better perspective of how lucky we are, and what we can do to preserve our blessings. I can't begin to describe how incredibly happy I am to see that you can establish a life, hopefully a wonderful one, and that your soul was not crushed. You're both very brave and important voices, especially these days when we see the beginnings of totalitarian tendencies even in Western societies. Bless you.
Have to admit, I cried listening the interview with JBP.
I got a copy. Looking forward to reading it

We just happy to see you
Am absolutely touched and moved by the story from the beautiful North Korean lady.
It's just teaching me to practice more gratitude. Am so grateful for my country because I enjoy all the forms of Freedom I desire as compared to her mother country.
I get to move, eat, dress, learn, travel, worship whatever thing I desire in my heart. This journey has taught me to really be grateful for my Country, the small things and My President.
It's really not easy for people in other countries like North Korea.
Although with all due respect I very much respect their President because all leaders come from God.
I only pray he graces more empathy towards his people and gives them the freedom to enjoy all these aspects life has to offer.
I love you so much ladies and I admire your strength and courage to share such powerful stories to drive change and transformation for North Korea.
