Hey guys! In this video I go over what happened to Nick Van Owen at the end of The Lost World: Jurassic Park! Now of course since we don't have any concrete answers on this subject matter it's more of a film theory that involves the Jurassic World Franchise. That being said I think we can come to some logical conclusions that will suffice until some serious answers surface one day. Any ways this video is all about Vince Vaughn's character in the first Jurassic Park sequel! Hope you all enjoy! :D

Hollywood women. In the book Harding was as smart as she's supposed to be. It's also her who saves Malcolm in the cliff scene but they wanted it the other way around in the film.
It's so dumb. She acknowledges that the T.rex has an amazing sense of smell, that they would expand their territory and that the air was so humid that the blood wouldn't dry. If I didn't know any better I'd say she was trying to get herself eaten.
At least Sarah isn't like Mrs. Kirby in Jurassic Park 3.

I think it was a shame that he wasn't mentioned somewhere in relation to the DPG stuff in Fallen Kingdom, because that really sounds like an organization and movement that he would be supportive of (similar to Sarah Harding).
They should mention him, or maybe give him a cameo in Dominion. It’d be cool to see where he is now after the Isla Sorna incident.

Nick's absence does make a kind of sense from a line he had earlier in the film:
"Hammond's check cleared or I wouldn't be going on this wild goose chase."
He had a very mercenary outlook and wouldn't risk another encounter with an apex predator.

Roland Tembo's exit scene is cool, but you have to imagine he ended up leaving the island on the same helicopter as Ludlow leading to an incredibly awkward journey.

Not to mention Nick getting everyone on the island killed by sabotaging Roland's camp and equipment. And taking the bullets from Roland's rifle. Ludlow was the main villain and hired the mercenaries but Nick was responsible.
I always thought it was implied that Ian left Kelley to stop Ludlow, and Nick stayed with her to watch over her, since there was no other adult with them at the time.
Of course, a single line of dialogue of Ian telling Kelley to Stay with Nick while he and Sarah stop Ludlow would've been nice. And maybe Nick went on to help form the dinosaur protection group seen in Lost Kingdom. That's my headcanon.

I actually came up with my own idea as to what happened to him, as soon as they got back to the mainland Nick went straight over to Hammonds mansion to give him all the photography and Dino research for him to start turning The island into the biological preserve he wanted, so it would make sense that he went straight to the mansion and Ian and Sarah went straight to the docs to try and stop Ludlow, which gives the explanation why he wasn’t with them at the time of the San Diego incident?
I know this is 5 years late but didn’t he lose all of his equipment when the Trailer fell off the cliff?

Mind you, he’d been taking pictures all the time so it’s possible maybe he had a few rolls of full film in his pocket? or as he had been a protester and sabotage expert before, maybe maybe out of cautionary habit after every time he put away his camera, he took the memory card out and kept it in his pocket after all when you’re sneaking up on poachers or dangerous stuff you may have to sometimes run away and throw away your camera.
And maybe also he had stored a few bits of it in the high hide? And recovered it before the party set out towards the old Injen facility?

Nick van Owen would have been a better fit to bring a character back for JWII than Ian Malcolm. Nick could have been a member of the DPG, trying to protect the dinosaurs after having seen them in person.

My guess is Nick secretly boarded the ship that was transporting the T-Rex to San Diego in an attempt to release it, causing everyone on board to die, himself included. Who knows, maybe Nick was the one who dismembered whoever was steering the ship, which explains why the cabin was intact.

Tim loved dinosaurs; he should definitely come back, somehow. Grant should also come back, but _with_ Ellie; they should have ended up together, which is one of the reasons I don't consider any of the movies after TLW to be canon. Sue me :P

Seriously though, what is the time lapse between Site B and San Diego? If I were Ian, I would keep Kelly as far away from Nick as possible. Death follows that man.
Right?! That's my hope, I think that during the trip home everyone had a statement to make and his eco terrorist acts came to authorities attention and dude is just in jail now. Twist of irony IF he got out later on it would be due to the chaos of the San Diego incident being brought up in a court case... lawyer could spin it that his actions were an attempt to prevent that scenario or worse even?
Either way, during the San Diego incident itself yea, I'm hoping he was in jail.
OR He knew he was in trouble and used the smokescreen of San Diego to get away, track Hammond down for his check (assuming it was a some now the rest after deal) and is trying to lay low someplace to AVOID getting locked up.

The point of Hammonds team was to document the animals in an intact ecosystem to sway public opinion into creating a reserve, while the hunters were there to harass and disrupt. "Taking dinosaurs off this island is the worst idea in a long sad history of bad ideas." And that was true then, and in fallen kingdom. Owen and the others were protecting the animals, but also people on the mainland. And while it wasn't "poaching" in the legal sense, that's only because cloned animals had never been seen before, so there were no protections in place. After the events of that movie, they were protected and for FK they did mention animals had been poached from there. A corporation can't own an ecosystem and make those decisions. As for the rest of that political BS you just barfed on your keyboard, what a ridiculous amount of nonsense. Libertarians and conservatives don't give a shit about conservation, and have been the cause of most habitat destruction, pollution, and degradation of the natural world in the last 100 years. That's why they're always blocking protections for endangered species. Get a clue dude.

I never really thought his absence needed much explanation. He did the job for Hammond, got his photos, sabotaged InGen, thought he sabotaged the Rex hunt, and got paid. He was likely moving on to his next gig when the San Diego incident happened. The incident also probably took away a lot of the power his photos would've had when released to the public. Can't feel sorry for him though.

I actually do think he up and left. When the Gatherers are on the helicopter flying over the tranq'd rex, you can see some unspoken reactions going on. While Ian and Sarah have a "We gotta do something about this look" Nick seems to look at both of them, before giving a sort of "im over this" look, that tells me he has no intention of involving himself any further.
Good point here! I don't know if we'll actually *see* Nick again in say, "Jurassic World 3," but I would like *something* in either merchandise or marketing form that finally gives closure to this mystery.
Babysitting Kelly would be a great assumption, going back to Greenpeace, or getting arrested by InGen are pretty good theories.
I've been on the side that Nick ends up in a legal nightmare over the things he pushed on the island. He's the one who spearheaded letting everything loose in the hunter camp, and then there was his tampering with Rolands ammunition that could also be actionable there.
Nicks and Kelly arent the only ones to not show up at the end....

I’d like to see a character comparison video for Nick Van Owen and the book character Richard Levine. How similar are these two? How different are they?
My theory? He decided to lay low for a bit due to fear of Roland finding him. That said, I think Roland eventually found and brought justice for what happened on the island to Van Owen.
I figured he went into hiding since his actions with replacing the slugs in Roland’s rifle led not only to many deaths of the survivor party they were traveling with but also to Roland tranquing the Rex which allowed it to be brought to the mainland, go on a rampage and injure/kill many several civilians. I imagine the authorities would want to have a word or two with him about that.
You should get more info on what happened to this character. He may have gotten a lot of people killed, and may have just been doing his job, but he risked his life multiple times to save both people and dinos.. If all those animals did get back to the mainland imagine how much chaos that could’ve caused.. If he hadn’t made it to the control center and sent their coordinates, (alone) they’d all have been dead. He also waited for them, when he could’ve literally said fuck this shit, hopped on the chopper, lied, n dipped. I’d rather see him in JW3 W the original cast than Roland. Even though we’ll prolly see neither. But both of them... that’d make for one hell of a movie.
I like Terrordrome 3000’s theory that Nick was on the S.S. Venture when the rex got loose at sea and that it’s his hand Ludlow sees on the wheel.

What I think happened was that he was asked by Malcom to look after Kelly. After they had gotten back he was gone. Kelly said she fell asleep and didn’t see him leave. What he did was figure out where to find Roland. After he did that he caught him hunting alligators at a lake. He told him he knew what happened to his friend and they discussed the incident. Eventually Nick offered him a job at Green Peace telling him the ladies were cute. Roland accepts probably because he didn't have anything else to do. And no one heard from him after that.
honestly, I think it was such a missed opportunity to bring back both Sarah Harding & Nick Van Owen for Jurassic World Dominion since you'd think that both characters would of easily fit in this new trilogy's tone & mood. Sarah would of been such a helpful source of information and expertise for the DPG and Nick would of been useful to document what was going on in the recent films as well as bring to the table due to his green piece philosophy.
I agree. It would been amazing to see Sarah Harding and Owen Grady talk about their experiences with dinosaur behavior. I still thought Dominion was a great movie even though we didn't see that.

Nick has always been an interesting character, especially considering that many people believe him to have conflicting motives (IE your video on is he a good or bad guy) but his disappearance by the third act i had assumed that he was looking after Kelly due to her experience of Isla Sorna. but i was sure when i found out that the third act was drastically different it made sense that the actor was unavailable for the reshoots.
Since pretty much every decision he made during the film resulted in multiple deaths, I imagine they wouldn't want him to have any position of importance ever again.
I'd like to believe that he'd want to document Rex's rampage through Sandiego ... Maybe some of the footage that you showed might actually be from Nick himself

I dont think any of the caged dinosaurs killed anyone though, it was only the Raptors and rex that were killing. All he did was cause a panic.
No non of the caged dinos killed anyone.my point was more that if all the dinos made it off the island then more people could’ve died on the mainland rather than the number on the island.
I have two theories:
1- He may have been arrested by InGen or by the authorities for a questioning about what he experienced on site B.
2- He arrived in San Diego with the others and attended the rex attack without helping Ian and Sarah, who knows maybe he's the one who filmed 00:00
I always assumed that there was a substantial time jump. Ian and Sarah were pretty beaten up as we left them on Isla Sorna, but were looking relatively fresh when we caught up with them in San Diego.
That is true. It takes 68 hours or so in 2020 to drive to San José costa rica (God save me, you don't understand how hard it was to find the info I needed to plug that into the Google maps to find a number) from the port of San Diego where they landed. To definitely doesn't take that long by helicopter and plane but would likely take a bit less by boat, so let's say 50 hours at most. That's still a bit over 2 days of ship travel assuming it never had to stop along the route. It also means the crew was probably killed right before it got to the dock but that's another discussion.
Finally someone had a camera to show the destruction
Digital Soldier XP so...I guess he leaked it to the press? It certainly explains why everyone seemed to accept the fact that living modern Dinosaurs are a thing that exists by the time of JP3, rather than most people doing the logical thing and writing it off as a hoax/PR Stunt/California weirdness

Remember: Roland was forced to tranquilliser the Male Rex after Nick *stole the bullets from his rifle!* So the blood of every human that died in San Diego (and the poor Pool Dog) are all on Nick Van Owen's hands, and I think he knows it too which is why we've never heard his character even mentioned since Lost World! 😤😤😤

It could be possible that he could be dead by his own hands. Failing in his mission on not to let any of the animals off the island, definitely when it was one of the adults Rexs. And after the whole San Diego incident; he would have felt a decent part of responsibility of what happened. That could of mixed a whole bunch of negative emotions like failure and survivors guilt, it would be out of the question that it would be a possible

I always thought Nick went home after they left the island considering that he wasn't present during the rex in san diego scene. Add to the fact that he wasn't mentioned at all during the san diego scene implied that he left and has retired from being an nature photographer.

I like to think he tracks down roland tembo and gives him ajays backpack he picked up? Just my opinion.
I don't know about him babysitting Kelly? To me, I would have expected him to have come down to the docks with Ian and Sarah, if he could? Perhaps Nick got into some legal trouble, maybe by Ludlow for destruction of Ingen equipment? Millions of dollars in equipment and a lot of people died from the T-rex and raptor attacks on Sorna?
Maybe he crossed paths with or confronted Roland between leaving Sorna and when the San Diego Incident happened (that would have likely been a couple of days between Sorna and San Diego), and maybe something went down there, like another bar fight where Nick and/or Roland could have been detained? But that also could depend on what Roland's mental state would have been, considering he got his trophy, but at the cost of his best friend in the world.
It would make more sense to me that something else would have happened in the story to prevent Van Owen from being in the 3rd act, than babysitting Kelly. Even though Ian, Sarah and Kelly would certainly trust him with Kelly's safety, I just don't see him sitting out the chance to intervene in the 3rd act, unless something were to happen to him in the story to prevent him from being there?

I like to think that after leaving Isla Sorna, the events for Nick Van Owen play out similar to the "raindrops are falling on my head" scene from Spider-Man 2 (2004) but instead when Nick falls over he puts on the hat we see him wear when we first meet Nick in Eddie's workshop, and when the police cars are chasing the t-rex Nick just eats a salad as the t-rex rampages though San Diego.
They did the same thing with Leon from The Fast & The Furious (2001) he was mentioned once and then forgotten about but still alive and out there somewhere...

You should start doing character comparisons comparing similar characters from the series like you did with Robert Muldoon and Roland Tembo. Billy Brennan vs Nick van Owen would be interesting since they're both young guys who did bad things with "the best intentions". The characters are one of the best parts of this series for me and it would be cool if you did comparisons between some of them.
P.S. I would love to see Alan vs Ian, Ellie vs Sarah, Kelly vs Eric, etc.

I disliked nick's dogmatic idealism, but the character was competent, which I can say is far more than what could be said for his idealogical counterpart, and no, that isn't Roland.

I have often wondered this myself.
I can also imagine a somewhat depressed Nick (after years of having the finger pointed at him as the villain) actually falling in with a borderline alcoholic Roland (finding his "victory" over the T-rex hollow and feeling remorse for Ajay) and someh settling their differences (possibly a fistfight that brings them both to their senses)

I can only imagine Roland killing Nick with his bare hands because Ajay's death was totally Nick's fault.
Always thought it was a shame that he wasnt at the end. A perfect position for him would have been holding a protest outside of the Docks, as his character wouldn't have agreed to keep quiet on ingens behalf.
If Van Owen had been in San Diego the SOB would probably tried to prevent the rex's recapture.
There was always rumors that Nick snuck aboard the Venture, tried to free the Rex, but ended up getting killed in the confusion when the dinosaur broke free.

If I know him right, he probably freed the t.rex. which then proceeded to kill the whole crew. Seems like something he would do.

No he wasn’t... And In fact I think what happened was he had another helicopter with him that flew over to the Venture and then started causing a shootout with the Crew and maybe went into Hand to Hand combat Fist fights with the Crew members and then killed the person steering it cause he would’ve been a witness to the incident. So I’m pretty sure Nick was the one who caused their deaths. And he was never caught because he flew away in his own chopper possibly. Or one f the militarized ones that was involved in the Expedition on Isle Sorna. I’m pretty sure maybe Roland helped kill the crew cause we do see him not being happy when Ludlow says to him that they did it and capture the T Rex. I’m pretty sure Roland and Nick are the suspects for the incident on that’s Boat...
Nick would of been great to quietly reintroduce in Fallen Kingdom helping Claire be an activist and what not. I'd rather have a character like him just say one sentence and be done with it instead of the bigger characters like Ian who deserved more screen time. bringing back old characters to get us old fans to watch a new version of the franchise without finising or extending a 25yr+ character story is kind of a slap to the face and kinda greedy.
I think the theory about him watching Kelly has traction. He just saved all 3, Malcolm, Harding and Kelly by running alone into an unknown area to radio for the helicopters. Surely Dr. Malcolm would trust him and probably told him they were going to end Ludlow's madness, he just had to make sure Kelly was safe for him.

Love the new intro. Lost World is my favourite movie, but there are quite a few unexplained parts, like Owen's disappearance, who killed everyone on the boat, why Sarah carried around a jacket stained with T-Rex blood, and why the awesome Roland Tembo didn't pick up on that.
I think tembo being a hunter n there to bag the buck was the reason he let Sarah keep the coat. What better way to get an animal to come to you than with some bait

N he knew they were gonna leave the rex territory n wouldn't get a chance for a shot but if they were to follow the scent of the baby rex blood then the opportunity would come around. Sure it puts the group in danger n maybe he wouldn't risk the lives of those people but I would for a shot at the buck

Honestly, at least for myself, it always seemed weird seeing Vince Vaughn in this movie. I'm not talking about the character, as the type of character Nick Van Owen is/was made perfect sense. No matter where around the globe, any type of animal "worth killing" (hunters opinions), you're gonna have some extreme granola eaters wanting to prevent it. And that's good, movie-wise (and I'm sure, in real life as well) otherwise it's gonna get a little boring. So I'm down with the character, but I'm not down with Vince Vaughn AS the character. And I like the guy as an actor, particularly the comedy films. And I think that's the problem. I think the guy isn't great outside of a comedic role. And it isn't due to not wanting to see him outside of that. But not every actor is going to have a great range. There's way more Rob Schneiders than Gary Oldmans(wait...Oldmans, Old men? No. Oldmans...) Seriously. Next time "Rudy" comes on (usually A&E) check him out. Doesn't fit. But Hey, who am I to judge. Just my opinion. Yet another great video, thanks for making it! It is likely that Nick was watching Kelly. Ian knew that Nick practically saved her life, along with Sarah, when the Rex attacked the campsite. Ian even thanked him when he came through the waterfall, so Ian leaving his daughter in her care once they got back to the relative safety of the mainland is not entirely out of the question. Although, I think it would be cooler to have used him in a different capacity for that third act.
