Really enjoy watching your videos. I've been driving buses for 7years now in Brisbane Australia. Would love to come and drive the double deckers in London. keep the videos coming Neil
Buses used to reverse around a corner in the days of conductors. They had to so as to be able to return to town. The conductor guided them. Some routes, however, had a turning circle (especially trolleybuses!) which made it much easier.
hi, just found your channel! i have my PCV driving exam next wednesday with stagecoach in cheltenham. everything you said about listening and trusting your instructor couldn't be more true! can't wait to get out there on the job properly.
Hi Anton, driving aside, as you obviously had no issues with that. It’s your attitude, your very well presented, you have a great way about you, it’s what you need when dealing with people and above all you enjoy your job. I like this video it’s very helpful. Like you I passed my car driving test first time, many moons ago . I think a man walked in front with a red flag. I took my PCV lessons independently, paying for them myself. Like you I failed my first test, I know what’s right and wrong and feel the examiner had a bad day what he failed me for. In discussion mode I told the examiner that I I think he made a mistake he failed me on one serious, it was, I didn’t make progress coming out onto the M25 at Junction 25 for what it matters. There was a tipper lorry coming down the inside lane as I was joining the motorway I decided to let him go so I just slowed down so I could get into the flow of the traffic and that’s why I failed with a serious, I only had three minors up to then. I said to him, if you get me next week I do the same again. How dumb was that? He said I could appeal, I said no point I took my test a week or so later with the same examiner and passed. I think I could have driven like mad max and passed. He was a nice bloke though.
Hi again, I am very entertained by your videos. As I have mentioned elsewhere on your videos, I drove in London from 83 to 04. Then came to Canada and have driven in various city bus systems and now I am at a city in the Province of Alberta, Canada. I joined LT in 83 trained on an old BEAirways RMC and went on the old Chiswick Bus Works skid-pan! Here in Canada recruitment is a long process, with 3 or 4 visits of doing assessments, tests, panel interview and finally a medical. The driving exam has one big difference...you have to learn the mechanics of how air brakes work and how to adjust them manually (like a mechanic would, crawling under the bus with a wrench (spanner) in ya hand! Also pre-trip air brake testing (causing parking brake to apply if air is lost). Proving that air loss will apply the brakes. The irony is that modern buses have automatic brake adjusting so actually, we would never have to crawl under a bus and of course here if you cannot build up ya air...well ya cannot move off...so no danger there either!
After 30 years working on the bus engineering side. We were all required to take our PSV test. Now retired, it is interesting how many drivers cross their hands when turning, fail to keep thumb on top of the wheel. in case the wheel snatched and broke your thumb and finally taking the test in a half cab Leyland PD1 with no power steering and crash box on first and second; Double declutch being the order of the day. For real fun driving a Daimler pre selector. The pedal to the left was not the clutch but the gear change. Fail to align engine speed with road speed and the pedal missed the change and took the back of your leg out.Oh and no cab heaters; they came later.....
'Uddersfield !!! l always remember nearly getting nearly getting stuck under a low railway bridge in 'Uddersfield !! Just managed to get underneath by keeping it to the centre of the arch ! Then l remember a taxi driver complaining because he came flying around the corner too fast !! Then l pointed out to him the signs saying " Warning oncoming vehicles may be in the centre of the road !!" All l remember it was going up hill and by-passed the town centre coming out the otherside of it by going down hill again !!
Hello from Slovakia. I am bus driver too. Working for Arriva DB here in 🇸🇰. I absolutely know what are u talking about Anton. I love driving same as u do. Wish u many many miles without accidents and a lot of health. Drive safely my friend ✌
You Know The News ....yes it moves here in November...but i was hoping the 188 would too...from abellio ..i used to drive it...but it may go to stockwell garage
I was hoping for Camberwell for the 176 to stop drivers having to travel by bus as they do now to Norwood. I won't miss the VLA's engine sounding like Concorde along Lordship Lane! Would like EH's on that route.
We I do 2 routes where you have to reverse round a corner in a bus. The 63 you have to reverse onto the stop at Keys Park and the 50 you have to reverse to turn round in Gorefield. Would have been helpful to do reverse round a corner on the bus test lol.
Very similar to how London operators recruit drivers. There's a video series on my channel following a few recruits through the process with Arriva. From memory there is the Initial application, driving assessment in a van, interview, medical, theory test (highway code and x2 CPC), practical driving test & practical CPC test after 10-30 hours driving instruction. There is also periodical training to keep the CPC entitlement which is 7 hours a year (35 hours over 5 years). There are also "Mystery Shoppers" or Driver Quality Monitors who are plain clothes who inspect driving standards of every driver in London, you get a report after they've been on your bus and if it's not up to par they may send you for "refresher" training - mainly for one handed steering or not putting handbrake on when stationary. I loved my time on the job, my colleagues were great, most of the travelling public were cordial and polite and some weeks the pay was great (usually during the summer when there was LOADS of overtime going!)
Hey am really showing my age now ,test passed 1985,in a Bristol Lodekka, half cab double decker, crash gearbox(manual) & no power steering, spent my early part of my driving career driving ex London RMs around Glasgow, the best bus ever built,I'd have them back tomorrow
thanks dave....i never got to drive an RM....but managed leyland atlanteans and olympians... 1985.....thats when privatisation came in....you would have witnessed a big change in 1985.... i bet its cold up in glasgow!
The RMs lasted up there from 86 to 89/90,they were well received by the public, most drivers loved them too, they did have to modify the heating though. There were 3 companies that had them,Clydeside Scottish,Kelvin Scottish & a mob called Magicbus, which was stagecoach in another name in the early days, their founder Brian Souter used to be seen driving them regularly. When they were put into service they still had the original bare light bulb interior lights, typical Glasgow though, they had to put grills over the light bulbs as they were being nicked!!!
Hi Anton, was your training done at the time Huddersfield was using those awful B10Ms brought up from Sheffield and being flogged around a Golcar 301? I think the idea was to teach drivers how to get round a tight blind corner under the viaduct. Cheers, fascinating video.
love watching you videos im a bus driver in the southwest and enjoy the job very much, would love to have a go at driving a bus in london its one of my favourite citys despite all the bad stuff you hear in the media.
yeah, I highly recommend OMSI 2 as it is the most accurate and realistic (Not Graphically) lol. I have a Leyland Olympian mod and Enviro 200 but the game is mostly based around MAN's
i have an interview to become a bus driver tomorrow :) - im currently a delivery driver but has been a childhood dream to be a bus driver 🤞🤞 Thanks for the vid 😊

Hey Anton I am a Huge fan I love the videos and I will be soon getting my PCV Driving test for First Cyrmu. We Don't use Double decker's mostly in My Area we use Streetlite's, Enviro 200,Marshal Darts. I Would like to see a Video were you film yourself doing a route.
Alex Skinner ....thanks...yes i remember holidaying around north wales pwllheli and abersoch in the 1990s and i remember a lot of single deckers there... good luck with taking the pcv test
+DoubleDeckerAnton North Wales is Arriva though :-P First operate primarily in the Swansea / Llanelli / Ammanford / Carmarthen areas of South/Southwest Wales and Stagecoach operate primarily in the Cwmbran / Newport / Rhondda / Caerphilly / Merthyr areas of South Wales (though both operate long distance services to and from Cardiff and Mid Wales). Internally Cardiff is Cardiff bus and NAT Group. Mid Wales is all small companies internally, and of course there are some small companies operating in the other parts of the country as well :-)
Passed my HGV 2 ( rigid) just over 2 year ago i had lot trouble tryin to find an instructor with A manual split box and proper wagon to do it in failed First time got CUT up on A R/A car jumped red lights
Ali Kubach ...you need a driving license 1st ..then get some car driving experience (9-12 months)...and you should be ok to apply for a bus driving job!

brad...i do get bored...its part of the job..but no 2 days are the same! The weather changes...the traffic changes..the people change (even tho u get your regular passengers)....the buses change..as you can drive a volvo, enviro..or hybrid!
mat2090 ....i record with my samsung galaxy note 4....had it over 2 years....its been a great phone..top of the range when it came out....it can do everything....!!! I use the internal camera for most videos and the external better quality camera for videos requiring zoom shots... Thats all i use!
Anton - if you have an email address (that you don't mind sharing), add it to your about page on your channel. This way people could contact you. I've finished your TH-cam Banner (if you wish to use), but I'm unable to send it to you!
yes...thanks for the banner... its antonsobanski@hotmail.co.uk i dont access email much...more like weekly or fortnightly...i do most things on facebk or youtube.. i dont want to get too many emails...as it can get overwhelming...so il try get back to everyone when i can 👍
Hi I was wondering have you ever had any problems with the buses you've driven and what do you do if you have a problem with the buses you've been driving
I failed my test first time around (Dec 1996) and when I re-tested (pass) Jan 1997, I had to do the theory as well. If I passed the test in Dec 1996, I could drive up to 7.5 ton. But I didn't thus 3.5 its ton
ls the collecting of money required ? l would hate that !! Is it true on London buses the Drivers don't collect cash anymore ? It's all done electronically ? That would suit me !! Less hassle !!
.•*PrincessBabyRosieFan82*•. ....yes 40 is my main route since 2012.... but i drive all the others....some drivers find the 40 boring as it has a lot of runs compared to the other longer routes that have less runs... example 4 runs daily on the 40 compared to 3 runs on the 35 or 12 or 185, 68 etc
scott campbell ....yes....its 18 years old...but have 9-12 months driving a car experience...whether its your own insurance or your parents...as long as you have some experience on the public highway
i used to drive A DENNIS DART MARSHALL ON ROUTE 95 for first centerwest and sometimes I WOULD DRIVE 282 E3 E7 E9 AND 607 I WAS A GOOD WORKER FOR FIRST CENTERWEST/LONDON I JOINNED FIRST IN 1997 AND DRIVED A VOLVO OLYMPIAN ON THE THEN 83 NOW ITS 483 theese were the 95 buses i drove the dennis dart marshall upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/b6/First_London_DML41397_X397_HLR.JPG
...hi Vasile...depends on if you work in say London or in a big town out in the country...!!! London pays more than anywhere else but the standard of living is more expensive! Drivers earn around 500 to 600 pounds a week...plus overtime is available of you can get it!
We got tickets outside of Sydney but when you get to closer to Sydney such as Newcastle and north of Newcastle and Sydney and the Central Coast they use Opal card we don't have over cards here in Bowraville on the Mid North Coast but why do we have to pay twice more for the Ochre card but we paid cheaper and it's paper ticket I'm not from London I have no clue what the public transport ticketing systems work in London or outside of London please tell me I am planning to have a visit in London do you have a concession fare or do you have a adult fare child youth or student at TAFE University uni Van's ps when you do go on holiday Please visit Sydney Melbourne or Adelaide Darwin Perth Hobart or Brisbane even the Gold Coast or Newcastle on the Central Coast of Australia
Bus 🚍 is the first of all the time to be able for a lot to work for me as the first thing that is a good idea and I'm thinking of doing it in my old 🧓 on the same
I use the bus everyday twice for school. Thanks to you all :)
I hope I meet you one day in a bus. Haha.
Yes, say hello when you board my bus and the video that you watched on my channel.

Thanks for the vid 😊
How did it go
Anton, is it a lot different driving in London compared to driving busses in Huddersfield?
Snuggy 61 .....its different ..less greenery and less hills and valleys...roads are wider down here....and buses are newer here....
there are more buses so theres a bus every minute so to speak!
London has more bus lanes than Huddersfield which i prefer...as im seperated from traffic/cars etc.....
Your defo a unique driver!
Do the medicals include needles or are they all just breath tests?
Mark Roblox....i think its breath tests and urine samples
Hi Anton, love your videos, what brought you down south from driving in Yorkshire? And why bus driving and not lorry driving or courier van driving etc? keep the vids coming, very interesting and informative.
Hi William, I had some friends move down in 2010 and I visited. I then made a decision to move, but it took until 2012 to finally do the big move.
DoubleDeckerAnton Ah ok, that figures, sadly I never passed my bus driving test, tried twice, and failed twice, first time I reversed over a cone in the reverse manouvre, second time was a catalog of errors, plus I wasn’t feeling well on the day. I couldn’t afford to try a third time.
I know that you are working in London general not central, docklands buses, blue triangle and metrobus. 👍🏻
When my grandad sat his test it was 10p in our new money but it was the old money he paid it by and he is 80. Still driving and my dad passed his bus test in 2000 at the start
you should drive route 93 because there are so many bad drivers on it or drive SCC line 420 since the drivers always rush when they dont need to & its still 4 doors since metrobus (now controlled by B&H) are known for having 4 doors (2 front, 2 back) on all thier buses...
wclifton968 ...4 doors on a bus?
can u upload a photo please!
4 doors is a lot to open and close...i have enough with the new routemasters
i meant 2 doors aka 1 for each side so double wide
wclifton968 ...never seen that before...4 doors on 2 sides...lol
i meant 1 for left & 1 for right LOL
Can you do a video on your lease favourite bus and why you hate it please.
No emergency stops on bus or lgv and the hazard theory is 100 Qs and hazard perception is 19 clips.
I'm just training at the moment and the theory test is now 100 questions 85 correct is the pass mark.
i am from huddersfield i was wondering what you thought and if youve ever driven the (now 81,82) routes through kirkburton and shelley? thanks

Lil bit late but here none the less :P
Because of passengers or goods it’s advised that you break gradually. In a bus if you harsh break you could cause more damage for the passengers inside. Go gently over bumps Driver doesn’t feel it as much as the passengers
The driver feels it the most as he is sitting above the front wheels
Matthew Boothman we sit between the front wheel and overhang and not on top of the wheels
Diary of a bus driver: The Night shift

brad simpson ....thanks brad 👍
brad...i do get bored...its part of the job..but no 2 days are the same!
The weather changes...the traffic changes..the people change (even tho u get your regular passengers)....the buses change..as you can drive a volvo, enviro..or hybrid!

If some one wants to because a bus driver do they need a class b license or will the bus company help you get it ?
I failed my test first time around (Dec 1996) and when I re-tested (pass) Jan 1997, I had to do the theory as well.
If I passed the test in Dec 1996, I could drive up to 7.5 ton. But I didn't thus 3.5 its ton
qrogueuk ....yes...the theory came in just after i passed my car driving test...

ls the collecting of money required ? l would hate that !! Is it true on London buses the Drivers don't collect cash anymore ? It's all done electronically ? That would suit me !! Less hassle !!
Is the 40 your main route?
I remember changing the gears. I always got scared that I would mess up the car if I failed it. ._.
.•*PrincessBabyRosieFan82*•. ....yes 40 is my main route since 2012....
but i drive all the others....some drivers find the 40 boring as it has a lot of runs compared to the other longer routes that have less runs... example 4 runs daily on the 40 compared to 3 runs on the 35 or 12 or 185, 68 etc
The 185 is super long.
I rememher hearing you work at Camberwell Q, right?
Wait. Since 2012. Wasn't it Abellio then?
.•*PrincessBabyRosieFan82*•. ....yes it was abellio then from 2012 - 2016
Ah okay. Cool!
Hope I find you one day! :D
The only bus I take though from Q is the 185 on Wednesdays...
.•*PrincessBabyRosieFan82*•. ....im on 185 for a few days...
0:00 I thought you weren't allowed to show registrations?
