@chris jones there are many jobs that only require your attention at certain moments and not the whole time. For example commercial pilots fly on autopilot most of the time. However those jobs presently can't (or shouldn't) be automated precisely because of those moments in which you do need a person to do or complete the work. But yeah in the near future more and more jobs will get automated, to the extent that people like Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg have said that a universal basic income (ubi) will be necessary because many people will be unemployed.

Why do people get so annoyed by train drivers salaries? Public service jobs should be paid more I agree but that's no reason to be pissed off by someone else trying to provide for their family. Many people who claim the job is easy wouldn't even be able to get through the job application process. Also the prospect of someone jumping in front of your train at anytime isn't a nice feeling.
public service jobs should not be paid more than the market value for that job otherwise people would be demanding £100K salaries, 60 sick days off a year and tons of other benefits that hurt the tax payer the most
+Cosmic Ascendancy that's also very socialist and we all know that socialism is bad since the USSR collapsed, China started jailing Human Rights Lawyers and Venezuela started breaking the laws of the Constitution
Graham Certain public service jobs require expertise in their respective fields and pay quite well. For instance, sometimes when I’m riding the subway, I see flyers advertising civil service exam dates for positions like an escalator maintainer or an engineer that require several years of experience and have wages that start from $45 an hour. It’s not a great idea to shoehorn all public service workers into an “untouchable” category, as there are positions that are relatively skilled.
What exactly do u appreciate? I use The train 8 times a week and there's always cancelations, delays, And Im almost always standing, total crap service
@@Carltonwanks Yes, because all the drivers and staff workers are totally at fault for broken-down trains, signal failures, people jumping in front of trains...
I wanted to be a train operator for NYC but my lousy hearing kept me out. It was always a dream of mine to do this job. It just goes to show that when you put something out into the universe and envision yourself doing it, it doesn't always come to you. However, never stop hoping but always be prepared for not getting everything you want.
Something people aren't considering with pay is the fact that you're also doing shift work, often at night where pay is usually much higher anyway. You have to know your route like the back of your hand, signal/junction locations and braking distances - I've heard many train companies say that they pay drivers for their commitment to the job at any time and knowledge because memorising many miles worth of a route to the metre is not easy for anyone. It's easy to judge when you have no actual idea of how much work is actually involved.
I love it when people try to justify the pay for a job like this, it's always "Safety" or "Route knowledge". Yet many other safety critical, high knowledge requirement jobs on the railway pay 1/2 and have worse shift patterns/rest requirements. A driver carries responsibility for their own passengers, but a fitter or signaller has that on a much larger scale. They carry the responsibility for every passenger on the network, with their actions having consequences well beyond the present. But it's OK, a driver "MIGHT" have to evacuate their train one day 🤣 Or has to remember the one route that they sign. It's time we went to in cab signalling, ATP and as much automation as possible. It's the safest way and the sensible progression of our railways.
@@richardwillson101 I am inclined to agree with you. A driver has a safety critical roll on ONE train. A line controller/service controller in peak has to think about over one hundred trains on the Nothern Line, where I worked for thirty years. It's a job I wouldn't do! If there is a one under, then the controller has to multitask very quickly. Working on National Railways,is a lot harder, due to its sheer size!
@nearlyretired7005 absolutely, a controllers job on the railway is about as dynamic as any job gets. From routine to extremely stressful in an instant. - Having to make all the decisions remotely with information being drip fed to them on scene. Not something I envy.
Love all the jealous people on here complaining about their £50K salary. Why don’t you then actually apply for the job, and if you pass the selection tests and the training you can then come on here and tell everybody exactly how easy the job is and how you’ve told TfL to only pay you half the salary because your simply not worth £50k per year!!!!
ryanhaart That’s not actually true. Tube drivers for the night time tube are recruited from the public, it’s part time but can lead to a full time position. For a full time position straight away you have to be an employee of TfL and apply via the internal vacancy list.
ryanhaart The driver job for night tube has had 3 recruitment campaigns in the past 3 years. The station assistant role has had around 10 different campaigns over 5 years. It is the common step to becoming a driver.
ryanhaart I'm a mainline driver.. 31, before being a train driver I studied music and did two years working in care... And applied straight to be a train driver, no prev experience or railway jobs... Am I a normal person? Sounds like it. We have loads of new drivers straight off the street. It's nowhere near the elite industry you're alluding to. I don't understand your argument.
@@skiddmarks Well compared to other jobs in London like working in schools, hospitals (all levels of Nursing grades) high street retail shops, Fire fighters, Paramedic they even take more than a Metropolitan Police Officer and think of the dangers the Police are faced with, they should be paid alot more. dukemydogy Exactly, a professional highly trained person in a professional safety critical role is always going to make it look easy, be more worried if they made it look difficult! I'm sure a pilot looks pretty relaxed in the cockpit of an aircraft even with all the knowledge and responsibility they carry, just the same as a Train Driver. Only difference being that for some reason pilots aren't vilified in the media for gullable, uninformed people to read and ingest. Most jobs which carry this level of responsibility and hidden knowledge, skills and challenges appear easy to the bitter, untrained eye. I would argue that if you genuinely think someone in this job is overpaid for a simple, unskilled task then you'd have to be an utter moron to not have applied...
SportsFreak disgusting thing to say they need help and support and anyone who doesn't fear unintentionally ending another persons life has something wrong with them
I worked for the Underground for 13 years, the last 2 as a Jubilee Line driver. It was the hardest training corse I have ever done with a 80% drop out rate. But I hated the job, it was the most boring job I have ever done and when the chance came I left. London Underground was a good company to work for though and on top of the money it was only 35 hours a week and 8 weeks holiday a year.
As a pilot, I would have to say their salary is nothing for the public to complain about. Train drivers have a huge responsibility. Not just the Tube but all rail lines as well. It is well known that the two safest modes of travel are air and rail. Sure, serious incidents happen from time to time and they make the news...because they are so few and far between. The most critical period for an aircraft is during take off and landing, the rest is fairly mundane really, in a modern commercial aircraft, although pilots are continually monitoring, they do not just sit back and stare into space. The chance of an aircraft colliding with another is virtually zero during flight. Same goes for trains on rails really, although it can happen. Train drivers on the other hand have to be continually looking and checking. This is ground transport, where anything can go wrong, from people doing "one unders" at stations, (not just at Tube stations either), cars stalled or stuck at level crossings, people on tracks, the list goes on. Signals have to be observed continually, and trains have to be stopped safely at platforms, with passenger safety and comfort in mind. Whilst there may be a lot more theory required to operate an aircraft, once in the air and the aircraft is performing correctly, which is 99.9 per cent of the time, little can go wrong of an emergency nature. people cannot jump under a plane in the air, if the weather causes a rough ride that is not pilots fault, there are no vehicles blocking our route needing emergency reactions, and if another plane was a bit close there would be alarms and automatic inputs to avoid it. Trains cannot be steered, they cannot avoid objects and can take a while to stop. They have no reverse thrust capabilities like an aircraft, or flaps and rudders to steer with. only the rails. And most issues with trains are caused by the public. At airports, passengers are only a very small reason for problems. So do train drivers deserve their 50 thousand plus a year salaries. You bet. And remember, they are paying tax on their salary also. Like pilots, they want to get their passengers home safely and without incident. And to do that, it takes extensive training, (as well as involved exams) to achieve it. As for the strikes, no industry is immune from those. I think flyboy747uk's comment here sums it up fairly well.
Thank you for making this comment and I completely agree with you. Judging by the fact that I am the only person who replied and liked your comment leads me to believe that these people saw a long comment and were just too lazy to take a minute and a half to read it. Guess it's no surprise.
Having spent many years maintaining aircraft and then trains, I have to be inclined to disagree with you. If something goes wrong on a train, it comes to a stop. No falling out the sky, no burning to death as it tries to land, no flying into terrain, no injuries from rapid decompression... the lost goes on. A derailment or crash is most likely to be the fault of a track worker or signaller not a driver. When something goes wrong, fitters get called out to deal with it. Have you seen the average BR cab? A speedo, a brake chest pressure gauge and an air reservoir gauge. About three warning lights and 6 buttons. Nothing complicated about the operation it's self. The complication is route knowledge and railway rules. Signallers and fitters have a far more safety critical and responsible job, yet don't earn anywhere near what a driver does. Have lesser rest period requirements, worse shifts and require far more training. Train drivers get paid so well thanks to militant unions and holding the nation to ransom. Not saying its a bad thing just the true reason.
I am completely stunned over the accuracy of the Train Simulator right now ... I haven't played in a year but still recognized nearly every location immediately
Bruh, why would you use a train simulator for it.. Just get cab rides by asking any driver at E&C and they'll let you. Also I get to drive them since I know one
My Dad works as a Driver on the Northern Line, and one thing he enjoys is that because of the concentration you put in can help with normal life as well, which he spends with us. Very fascinating.
Also the trains vary greatly from one city to another, and sometimes even from one line to another in the very same city. It's not like airplanes for example that a Boeing 737 is roughly the same in Europe, in Asia or in America. Each train model is unique as they are custom made. Also signals, procedures, rules etc. are different in each place, unlike in aviation for example.
The isolation from other people would be a big advantage for me in this case as I’m quite I introverted and I really don’t like works where you always have to deal with people :-D. I love the London Underground... to ride it, it’s history. It’s complexity.. All about it.
Fascinating really. A system with such history I guess. Inspired me so much as a kid I wish to eventually do this one day as a dream job. I do like the Bakerloo as well those trains have a lot of character but they need replacing. They were built in the early 70s for the jubilee line I believe. I’ve spoken to many who work for this system and it’s a lot more than just driving. Lots of safety involved. As for automation this system got it first on the Victoria line in the late 60s. I think still someone should be in the cab to be fair to open and close doors.
You should have seen the 1938 stock which operated the bakerloo in the late 1970s, with frequent failures, usually defective doors. The 1972 stock have given superb service over nearly half a century.
To people who are shocked about how much they get paid. Have you ever thought how much money a single train earns in the peak? It is a serious money maker. Just because railway unions have had a long history of protecting and arguing for a fair wage and your industry hasn't, doesn't mean they should they align themselves with everybody else scrimping to get a long. They are a model for people coming together and arguing for what is just and fair.
That's why London has some of the highest fares in the world. Its not the corporation losing out, its the individual who has to put up with the fare increases because they are held to ransom and have no choice but to pay
@@tanliste absolutely nonsense, paying staff only accounts for a small portion of TfL revenue. Tube fares mostly subsidise buses in London, train drivers take a tiny slice of revenue.
okay but then why are people complaining about the salary of bankers, lawyers etc? Do you know how much money they make for their company in a day? You can either complain that everyone in London is overpaid, or none of them are. Pick and choosing is being a hypocrite.
The pitch-black tunnels would get to me. Okay if you're only driving above ground, but I believe all Tube lines descend into tunnels at some point. I was a computer programmer and you need concentration for that job, but it's a different kind of concentration.
its not that easy tho because if you crash or spad then your highly accountable plus all the stress from trying to break soon enough when someone jumps onto the track & if you don't break enough you get done for manslaughter and get a life of depression making you wonder how you could've/should've braked sooner thus leading towards suicide, does happen but not often
Johan Mattlin I don't think the job will exactly disappear. The work load my be reduced significantly but I don't think they will ever remobe the train conductor due to "Safety" issue. People would rather prefer a person watching over the machine incase it malfunctions. Not only that but then the company or the government (whoever runs the rail) will just have someone to blame on if anything goes wrong. It's not like they will say, "oh sorry the machine broke down and ur entire family and 100 other passengers died". They would rather put the blame on a human than a piece of technology.
It sounds like 85 percent of the time i would be decent at it but when something extra happens that requires additional/immediate attention i would be rubbish -and thus would never be hired. Also i imagine they can't listen to music because they need to be able to hear everything so that might get pretty boring after a while as well.
Probably not as easy as it looks. Even though trains are getting more and more automated, it does demand a lot of concentration. We've all read about train accidents that have cost many lives. Not good.
For those who think it's a drop-and-drive job, no.... you'll have to learn the rules, pass proficiency tests, medical, pre-employment drug screening and random drug and alcohol testing, periodic supervision, and receive constant criticism from the freight you carry. After you consider all of the above and more, you'll start thinking that 50 thou a year ain't really all that much for the responsibility that goes with the job. But hey, don't just take my word for it, go apply. You might actually enjoy it.
Gencturk92 What happens most of the time is not the issue, and quite frankly irrelevant. Mostly everything is running fine. But not all the time. And the time when it goes wrong is why you're getting paid that much. If you have a technical fault, you're delaying everyone else, you need to sort it out as quickly as possible while still being sure it will be safe. It's a very, very big responsibility.
I'd disagree. I can't speak for ferrys, but driving a bus is the same as a car, the only additional challenge being a few safety precautions, having to know your vehicle, deal with customers (although train drivers have this too, just to a lesser degree) and obviously the increased skill requirement to drive a larger and heavier vehicle than others.
happened to me..i ran for the tube but the door closed on my bag! it got stuck then started to move! i moved with it along the platform, it then stopped and opened
As a retiring cardiologist (not sure why the C is capital letter) you should enjoy your retirement and travel and enjoy the "final" chapter of your life.

Shifts, long weeks, short weeks, emergency, standing whole time. I cannot quite imagine how the live is, btw train driver in Czechia have GPB +/-15 000 year.
To all those people that think that £50K and free travel on the Transport is an easy job, remember this most tube lines star at 5.30am weekdays and drivers have to be at the deport long before that time to get the trains out on time. Likewise, the last train at night is typically after midnight. Remember you are down in a small hole underground in London, some of these tunnels are deep, running under other tube lines, in the event of a fire or incident, there is nowhere but forwards or backward to go. Many tunnels have as little as 12” space between the train and the tunnel wall so it is easy to get trapped in a tunnel. I just wonder how many people could cope with that. These tube tunnel are dirt, dusty and some parts very noisy, so your health is obviously going to take a hit with that lethal combination. And finally, if you can cope with all the rest, when someone decides to end it all and jump in front of a tube train, remember the driver is the one with a window seat.
Bahahahaa you're trying to make it sound like the hardest job in the world 😂 The hours are managed by shifts. Most of the tube system is overground so all this talk about small tunnels is pathetic as if millions of people around the world don't take tube systems all over the world. Most of the tube system is also automated. Most people who jump in front of trains do it on overground, national rail services, not London Underground. Why are you acting like this is the hardest jobs in the world when it is one of the easiest? 😂😂😂
The job is easy and they are way overpaid. Being a nurse is far more dangerous than a tube driver, and yet they have to queue at food banks in order to feed themselves and their family. Tube workers are just greedy barely human people that try to justify their salary any way they can. There is no longer a need for them, if AI can drive a car it would have no problem operating a simple train.
The amount of people saying crap like "it's easy" it "paid too much" 99% of you in the comments wouldn't even make it to the road test let alone passing it 😂
I wouldn’t mind this job at all. Not having to deal with talking to people every day would suit me perfectly! And the pay is good! I’m crap at concentrating for a long time though
No wonder the driver says she will stay put. Looking at £60k a year now with 9 weeks off, top pension, basic 35 hour week, guaranteed overtime if you want it. No chance of even getting an application form unless you already work in some capacity for TfL. No wonder the RMT are going on strike and want more than the 9% increase over 2 years that has been offered. To put this into perspective a Doctor trains for 7 years and then has to work up to be a registrar to earn this much.
Try as hard as they might , you cannot hide the fact that this is a very highly paid job for not much effort, they were struggling to make it sound like it was difficult and failed miserably 😂
I don't think people realise that after 6 weeks of learning the rule book you are fully responsible for your actions. If you don't follow the rules to the letter and someone gets killed due to your negligence you're going down for manslaughter. It's a huge responsibility and you are responsible for thousands of people's lives on a daily basis. One wrong move and it could be fatal. It's most definitely not stress free and you're constantly under pressure. That's why the money is so good. Say goodbye to any kind of social or family life.

Tube drivers get flat rate for nights..no extra money
You make the job sound complex.
It's quite easy.I did it for 30 years.
But it's OK, a driver "MIGHT" have to evacuate their train one day 🤣
Or has to remember the one route that they sign.
It's time we went to in cab signalling, ATP and as much automation as possible.
It's the safest way and the sensible progression of our railways.

@nearlyretired7005 absolutely, a controllers job on the railway is about as dynamic as any job gets.

In my city, metro drivers don't make so much money, so it's not only about the work being tough.

Gencturk92 What happens most of the time is not the issue, and quite frankly irrelevant. Mostly everything is running fine. But not all the time. same thing with buses and planes and coaches and ferrys

@@heystirke300 no one cares what u think people deserve...unless u r a train driver u cannot possibly comment...moving the train is only one part of the job...try fixing the train, coupling and uncoupling a train to assist another train, route knowledge (so the train doesn't go thr wrong way), endless procedures that must b remembered and followed at any given moment...sometimes just speak when u know what u r talking about...plus tube drivers are the lowest paid compared to all other train drivers..
I would be a tube driver, but only on the overground (I'm scared of the dark). One exception for the Jubilee line, only because the trains sound cool
I've driven a train before! I've driven the dlr! It's so easy! All you have to do is go to the front of the train. Sit back and relax. And let the train do all the work for you!
Ever heard of a joke?
The DLR operator has to be able to drive the train manually, if the need arises.
She didn't talk about suicides. 16 years of driving tubes and she must have experienced one
Might be surprised but it’s quite a small chance for a train driver to run over someone
I was a driver for 20 years...had three suicides and a few near misses.....probably why i went grey nearly overnight not always a fun job....and ended up with heart problems.....
You get paid more if you see one anyways

Absolutely crap!
You are a sad person who believes the press, sad.
When did you film ! They are usually striking….
i WANT to be a tube driver.
i'm a train spotter!
Same.
MY GIRL KACEY MUSGRAVES AT 1:53 🥰🥰
Should be fine... I already live in darkness and isolation anyway
60%+ of the tube network is overground!!!!!!
@@OwenMc1992 Do you work for LU?
Are the bakerloo trains still running, would love to see them
Drivers have instinct, robots don't
I hope tfl sort out the ait quality and the excess screeching noise, if only for the health and wellbeing of the drivers
Moriarty huh?
Scots are only dangerous when they're drinking or thinking about drinking which makes them dangerous 98% of the time.
0:10 the one dude that got his bag stuck 😂
Tube drivers work very hard each day to get people to the destination the passengers want.
They deserve get nice money.
50K Welldone. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Does the free travel include station managers and stuff
I don't think people realise that after 6 weeks of learning the rule book you are fully responsible for your actions. If you don't follow the rules to the letter and someone gets killed due to your negligence you're going down for manslaughter. It's a huge responsibility and you are responsible for thousands of people's lives on a daily basis. One wrong move and it could be fatal. It's most definitely not stress free and you're constantly under pressure. That's why the money is so good. Say goodbye to any kind of social or family life.
ahem junior doctors
@@PikaPluff What a but junior doctors!
Thank you veeerry much for bringing this vedio of the train driver as at times they are taken for granted. Very appreciated about this vedio. Plzzz bring more vedios on the other train drivers and bus and black taxi london cab drivers. Brgds sanjeev mumbai india
She’s beautiful!
Actually looks like a nice and fun job!
Next time show a District line driver, ah sorry! The line is always suspended/delayed
It is only part suspended. It is just them needing to upgrade the line and the weekends are when they do it.
Wow ~50.000£ a year.
Very impressive.
I'm a Hungarian metro driver (i drive on the M3 line in Budapest) and i get less than 8.000£ a year in Forints.
50 isn't enough
But you gotta remember that £52k a year is around enough money to rent a garden shed in london
What is the music playing during the video ? remembers me the score of the TV series "Keeping Britain on tracks", by Andy Cowpton
One of the pitfalls of the job are those American Werewolves.
Yep they do warn you when you fill in the application
LoL we just get confused because your trains run on the other side of the rail
£50k isn't a huge amount these days anyway, especially in London. Most safety critical driving jobs attract a similar pay - I drive fuel tankers and earn around £57k a year.
That lady in thumbnail looked like Hillary Clinton
I admire this lady for her loyalty and committment to concentration and getting people to work and home.
£52k per year? That's about $100,000 AUD per year.
I wanted to be a electric suburban train driver in Melbourne when I left Tech school in 1983 but failed Year 10.
This job looks interesting.
Are the UK govt allowing Aussies in for work?
@Matthew Young but there are no states in the UK, they are called Counties. And I'm not in the UK. I'm in the best place in the world to live. Melbourne Victoria.
