Few archetypes of watch draw as much attention or take up so much space in the heads of watch collectors as the dive watch. Simple, utilitarian, and fit for all parts of life, dive watches are the ultimate expression of sports watches and have found a home on the wrists of countless collectors and enthusiasts over more than seven decades.
Today, Tim compares two of the finest examples on the market today - the Rolex Submariner Date and the Omega Seamaster 300M. Though both watches are decidedly modern, they each draw from an esteemed history. In fact, each watch has, at various points, appeared on the wrist of James Bond.
In this Versus comparison, Tim dives deep below the surface to break down the choice between these two icons, if there even is one at all.
Whether you know is as the “Kermit,” the “Starbucks,” the “Cermit,” or simply as “the Sub with the green bezel,” there is no denying that the 126610LV is one of the most popular options in the Rolex Submariner lineup.
Released in 2020 as part of the redesigned (and, at the time, controversially re-sized) Submariner lineup, the 126610LV was introduced as the successor to the previous generation’s “Hulk” and as a reimagining of the aluminum-bezel 16610LV - known as the “Kermit” for its use of the Muppet’s signature shade of green.
With a 41mm case and a new movement, the 2020 Submariner was a true update to the classic dive watch - and one that cannot be dismissed.
The 126610LV got a mid-cycle refresh in 2023, with a shift to a slightly different shade of green ceramic, but the original 126610LV remains a strong option, and, potentially, a rare one.
An icon of the 90s, the Seamaster 300M proves that technical capability and good looks don’t have to be far apart. Worn by the likes of James Bond, this fully spec’d dive watch will easily take you from the deck of a dive boat to the lobby bars of the world’s finest hotels.
Few names in modern watches are as recognized as that of the Seamaster. From the deepest depths of the Mariana Trench to the poolside bars of Lake Cuomo, there is a Seamaster for every occasion.

I own both but I prefer Omega. I think a lot of people who wear Rolex do it for the “flex” and attention. 20 years ago, Rolex were achievement or milestone items. They weren’t looked at as investments or “flex” pieces as you could walk into an AD and walk out with a watch except a Daytona. Then all the hip hop guys and crypto bros started buying Rolex and all of a sudden they are popular and investments. I’d like to see how popular Rolex are with people if they became easier to get and no longer carry a premium. I say another 5 years or so and the hype will die down.

As much as I want it so bad to not be the case, I don't think the "hype" will ever die down. Rolex has made a hard pivot into the luxury brand market, and celebrities and public figures with it. Come back in 5 years and see the price of a Skydweller be exponentially higher than now.

I have 3 seamasters (green on rubber, no time to die, and 60th anniversary) but I found that I'm wearing my Rolex (no date) more often than all omega combined. It's just growing on me. Omega is fun, but sub is more timeless and that's how I feel right now about watches.

The fact is that I'm considering selling either no time to die or 60th. I'll keep the green on rubber, though. When I first picked the sub (and this is my only Rolex), it just felt wrong; too simple to clean. But after a week, it was a totally different experience. Maybe I am just passing through the Omega phase. Again, there is nothing wrong with Omega loving this brand, it is just about the feeling. I agree with Tim here. If money is no object, I'll go for Rolex.

I just think the Omega is the far better looking watch (though this is the worst color). The quality is every bit the match as the Rolex and it absolutely has the heritage. These days - it seems like an Omega is for someone who loves watches and a Rolex (especially the sub) is for someone who loves to be seen wearing a Rolex. And I know this sounds like I hate Rolex and I certainly don’t - but for Sub vs 300M- I just think with the Omega being half the cost- it’s a no brainer

I don't think the hands are all that great on either the Rolex or the Omega. I don't know why Omega now puts the skeleton hands on every version of the Diver 300 meter. Some of the earlier editions of the watch were offered with sword hands that had more presence and were more legible.
The Rolex hands are just weird, with the ultra-thin minute hand and the hour hand that's subsumed by the "Mercedes" logo bopping around the dial.

As always.. thank you for the great review, Tim!! While I'm next in the waitlist for a Rolex Sub, as a previous owner of an Omega SMP 300M diver (white dial) - I noticed one practical issue with the skeleton style hands in certain darker environments. "Luminescence" under certain darker situations is indeed a real issue with Omega divers because the hands are not a solid Lume like on the Sub or even in Planet Ocean line up in Omega family. Because the indices are large and skeleton hands have a indices style circular edges sometimes these get camouflaged making it harder to read time. That is the single reason I've had to sell my Omega after owning it for over an year. Mentioning since others can make an informed decision. Other than that issue, the Omega SMP diver 300 is absolutely a terrific timepiece offering an unbelievable value for money. I also liked the heft the Omega offers on your wrist.

True , my sub is very precise as long as I am wearing it , not even a full second off per day, but when I have it in the winder or set it aside for a day or so, looses at least 5 seconds.
In contrast, my Omega Seamaster 300 ( heritage ) if I don’t wear for a couple of days that’s what it looses , couple of seconds, in the winder also is negligible the loss of time. This is what it makes it my favorite watch, the precision of the movement.
And forgot to mention, my daughter drop it from a table while moving something on hard ceramic tile and nothing , no impact whatsoever to its precision.

I own both models. With the bracelets sized to my 6.5 inch wrist, the Submariner weighs 150gm, while the Seamaster weighs 176gm. That 26gm difference makes the difference TO ME between comfortable and uncomfortable. Omega’s bracelet is just too chunky. The links are too thick and the bracelet doesn’t taper. I recently retired from my rotation both a Seamaster and a Tudor GMT because they both weigh over 170gm on my wrist. I replaced the Seamaster with an Omega Globemaster and that weighs 154gm. It’s even a little heavier than the Submariner, but it’s still comfortable on my wrist.

Rolex is in every way superior case, bracelet, design, clasp movement, thickness, heritage etc. I owned both these great watches including a 41 Sub for a year but didn’t like the baggage that comes with owning one, I switched to Explorer 2 42 and still have the Seamaster on rubber strap it’s wonderful! Great video Tim but a bit lazy on production this deserves the watchbox studio’s cinematography.

The 32xx movement is in no way superior. There are tons of problems (roughly 30% of movements in an extensive survey lose amplitude quickly) if you care to look it up.

@@golfbuddy1969 sure they could have! They could have either used a dual date window display if they needed it to be larger or they could have done it the way UN did it with the Maxi Marine and integrated the magnifier crystal underneath the primary crystal, leaving the primary crystal completely flat on top. The Omega looks like a Citizen or Seiko with the Submariner being one of the most iconic timepieces ever hatched from a goose of gold, or steel for that matter. Unless you’re a Speedy stay home. The fact that no one would even consider robbing you for something you paid over $4000 for says it all ☝🏻🥴

Fair comparison but Rolex always wins. Why? What percentage of Omega sell for above msrp used? Invest in a Rolex if you're not happy with it sell it, make money and get an Omega for free from the Rolex profits. Or buy a Seamaster and see what you get for it used... it's less than half. Investor vs Consumer, it's that simple.
