Watchmojo: top 20 frustrating video game levels. Me: and yet Rusty Bucket Bay from Banjo and Kazooi is not on this list. The water is polluted so you’ll drown even if Banjo’s head is above water, there are hidden rooms on the ship that blend well with the rest of the ship so you’ll end up attacking every window or wall, and the dreaded Engine Room.

Dishonorable Mentions: *Eggmanland - Sonic Unleashed -This is not only the longest level in the series, it's also among the hardest. *Temple of the Ocean King - The Legend Of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass -Even the worst dungeons in Zelda have one mitigating factor: You only have to do them once (twice at most). The Temple of the Ocean King from Phantom Hourglass meanwhile requires you to clear it 5-6 TIMES EVERY PLAYTHROUGH! Talk about a way to overstay your welcome. But that's just the tip of the iceberg. The place is designed to suck the life out of you, meaning you're on a time limit (which is upgradeable via the Phantom Hourglass), the puzzles reset every time you leave, there are arbitrary stealth segments with insta-kill enemies, the dungeon fuses a bunch of smaller problems into a chimera of tedium and frustration. *The Gutter - Dark Souls 2 -While The Frigid Outskirts in the Ivory King DLC deserves a mention, I have a bigger bone to pick with The Gutter. This is what happens when you combine the maze-like structure of Upper Blighttown with the pitch-black darkness of the Tomb of the Giants. It's way too easy to get lost without lighting all the torches or without a guide. *Cortex Castle - Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time -While ALL the levels in the final world are hard, getting the flashback tape in this level is going to give you an aneurysm.
the Temple is probably why I never finished it and possibly how you have to use the touch screen to move (like I get they wanted to have that gimmick but some do prefer using the classic button controls)
Be prepared was even more difficult. There were so many ways to die in 1 hit and you only had so many chances before you had to start from the beginning.
To be honest here I recently played resident evil 4 for the first time and doing ashelys level wasn't that bad for me I just kept dodging them until they were far away to do those cranks and I didn't even know u could even use things to harm them that would have been helpful to know instead of running around like an idiot
The Driver tutorial comes up a lot. I had trouble with it too as a kid, but every mission has a dev replay you can watch. This shows you the best way to check off all the tasks. It was pretty easy after that.
Many of the dungeons in Phantasy Star II are nightmares to navigate, especially on account of their labyrinthine design and the game's high random encounter rate. The most infamous example is probably Ikuto, which has a series of pits you need to drop through on each floor, and you'll only discover the correct pits to take through a ton of trial and error.
Clinger winger is ALOT harder than turbo tunnel in Battletoads. Don't worry about crashing, it's the fact that you have to memorize an entire level with no checkpoints, and push the right directional button at the right time to ride away from a glowing circle (whatever the hell that's called) or else it will catch and kill you!
Call of duty 4 modern warfare had 3 levels which made me rip my balls out while playing on veteran. One is the level where the jets bombard and u have to extract out of the farmhouse in 2 mins 30 seconds flat, the 2nd one is the follow up mission to all ghillied up where u literally take on a million enemies with a country full supply of grenades to survive 8 whole minutes and finally the epilogue plane mission. God damn did I hated the epilogue mission. It's impossible unless u input precisely down to the millisecond.
Glad to see Great Bay Temple get some well deserved hate. I dont dislike it but holy shit it is my least favorite. Not just the temple, but everyrhing leading up to it to become available is just a drag.
I beat Resident Evil 4 way back, so I got through the Ashely sections. So ditto for Majora's Mask and, by extension, the Great Bay Temple. If the Game Gear version of Ecco the Dolphin counts, then I've also beaten Welcome to the Machine at least twice.

Aztec is so goddamn difficult. I've been trying for years to beat it on 00 Agent difficulty! The lasers are OP once you kill Jaws, and those guards keep coming!
In my personal opinion, I think the Control mission on 00 Agent difficulty is more grueling. The obvious reason is when you have to protect Natalya, when she tries to disable the Goldeneye Satellite. It took me many years, and countless times to the point where I wanted to tear my hair out. It felt so satisfying to finally succeed. I felt much better doing it again on the Switch.
That mission was easy in Vice City... still have that game to this day. Just fly into them with the blades to weed out the ones that are causing the most trouble, done. Cake.
I'm not good at GTA at all and I managed to beat that mission on the first try somehow...if any GTA mission belongs here it's that infamous train mission from San Andreas
I'd also like to throw in three Super Monkey Ball series levels: Master 3 and 9 (Stamina Master and Bridge Master in DX) from SMB1, and Helix from SMB2. These levels are literal hell, especially for anyone who's still embracing the game
That was the sole area in the series where I had to resort to archery to succeed. I'd just take down enemies from a distance, so I wouldn't have to deal with the mages head-on. It reduced the frustration but was tedious to say the least.

One of the most frustrating levels I ever played was at the end of Mario Galaxy. I think you were running around on top of a giant flat Luigi and trying to get coins. It was a nightmare.
Through The Fire And Flames only took me a single try to complete on the Xbox version, and only a handful to 5-star! The fight against Inner Agent 3 in Splatoon 2's Octo Expansion, however, took me an hour and a half across 3 separate sittings.
one of the developers of the original Halo is on record saying that the Library level was way too long, it should have been just one floor. (1/4 as long)
It took me so many tries to finally beat the tutorial of Driver. I remember being so happy when I finally got it. The rest of the game was really fun, so it was well worth the effort.
for the benefit of anyone unfamiliar with Malenia from Elden Ring: she has several absurdly nasty attacks, and the worst is the "waterfowl dance", where she floats up into the air for a second or to, then zooms toward you and repeatedly slashes super-fast...and repeats this three times! the only way to avoid dying is to run like heck as soon as she starts floating, and even that is not very reliable. AND, much MUCH worse is the way she RECOVERS HEALTH EVERY TIME SHE HITS YOU WITH *ANY* OF HER ATTACKS! with most bosses, summoning a helpful character is a good idea, but not with HER, because he can recover health by attacking your helper!
I feel like I'm the only person that likes SSBB's Great Maze, lol. Most of the other Subspace Emissary levels feel too short, but I love getting 'lost' in the maze for a nice long time fighting off all the enemies.
Ashley? Really? Hardly frustrating. If anything, I found it a bit tense, at least the first part. You get so used to being able to shoot enemies and shake them off if you get grabbed. Now you don't have that and you only have so many lanterns, and if you're not strategic, you'll miss.

Blighttown was hard the first time I played Dark Souls because I went into Blighttown through the Depths. If you use the Master Key to go into Blighttown through the Valley of the Drakes, Blighttown is really short and easy.
Through Fire and Flames shouldn't be on here, simply because you can significantly lower the difficulty of the song, differentiating it from the other games on this list. On easy and medium only the song's length is an issue.

I also disagree with Great Bay Temple as a choice. The Zora swimming to me is a joy and one of the best implementations of swimming in a video game; the inertia and sense of kinesis are fantastic. The level makes sense very quickly once you understand the color coded pipes. Imo the 3DS remake is really frustrating with the terrible changes to the controls and boss fight.
That level in Lion King was and probably still is my favorite level in any game. Even as a kind I never struggled with it so I don’t think it’s appropriate for this list.

Hey, what about Mummy Me Maze Forever from Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker? This insane level is 1000 times harder than the Perfect Run from SMG 2. It has 50 floor with random position.
I actually thought Demolition Man in Vice City was easy. I'm not sure why people struggled so much on that section. The final mission for the nightclub was way worse! I can't tell you how many times I failed that race before I finally beat it.

I Say, Ocarina of time , horse race to win Epona pet. It' s savage. I managed to beat It a few times only. One more entry guiding Luigi in Dark Moon edges is tremendously frustrating not worthwhile the efforts spent.
Ingo definitely cheats in the second race by abusing his horse with constant dashing. I’ve found I can pretty reliably win by starting off with several dashes for an early lead, then occasional dashes while hugging the fence so he can’t pass.
I'm not a fan of any these games with the exceptions being: Contra; Sonic the Hedgehog; Halo 1. Combat Evolved; The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask; GoldenEye 007; Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles; Super Mario Galaxy 2;
1) Some of these hardest level listicles are so identical, I'd swear you're all copying off each other. 2) none of these listicles ever mentions the Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages level called Jabu-Jabu's Belly. I love this game and have played it numerous times, but every single time I get to Jabu-Jabu, it's impossible for me to beat it without consulting a walkthrough
REALLY Contra and TMNT The Dam??? The Library in Halo cake. Just go slow and only less The Flood only spawn in the front. Some of the others yes, but this could have been every Shinobi game, almost any Mega Man game, all 3 OG Ninja Gaiden games, LoZ Ocarina Of Time: Master Quest, Super C, and almost any bullet hell game of the 90's and early 2000's

There are WAAAAAAYYYYY more frustrating levels in Vice City than Demolition Man. No Escape? Keep You Friends Close…. The Driver???? And yet everybody wants to complain about a tedious RC chopper level 🙄
Demolition Man can actually be hard
Battletoads is the evilest game ever made. Dude, like every stage feels unforgiving ffs lol
FUCK LABYRINTH ZONE OF SONIC 1! FUCK ECHO THE DOLPHIN! FUCK GREAT MAZE! FUCK GREAT BAY TEMPLE WITHOUT A PROPER SAVE SYSTEM! FUCK NINJA GAIDEN NES GAMES AS THEY DON'T AGE WELL BY CYBER SHADOW'S STANDARDS! FUCK THAT DAM LEVEL FROM THAT TMNT NES GAME! FUCK TURBO TUNNEL! I'M GLAD THAT I'M WAY BEHIND THEM! And if there's an Honorable Mentions, it would be THAT GODDAMN WILY CASTLE 4 OF MEGA MAN 2, NEO ZEED MARINE STRONGHOLD OF REVENGE OF SHINOBI, THAT INFAMOUS HALLWAY OF CASTLEVANIA 1, TORVUS BOG UNDERWATER SECTIONS OF METROID PRIME 2, ANY CAVERNS RELATED TO HM'S OF POKEMON GAMES, AUTO-SCROLLING SECTIONS OF KIRBY GAMES, ROCKET BARREL RIDE OF DONKEY KONG COUNTRY 3, TOWER OF FATE ASCENT OF SHOVEL KNIGHT TREASURE TROVE, BATTLE GLACIER OF FREEDOM PLANET 1, SECRET WORLDS OF AXIOM VERGE 1, & STAGE 6 OF ZANGETSU SINGLE MODE HARD LEGEND DIFFICULTY OF BLOODSTAINED COTM2! NEVER AGAIN WILL I EVER PLAY THOSE FRUSTRATING AS HELL STAGES!
Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 are the greatest games ever in history in my opinion and my favourite Nintendo games of all time from my childhood. The Perfect Run in Super mario Galaxy 2 is really hard Galaxy/Course, I can so agree it. Super Mario Galaxy is in Super Mario 3D All Stars so I really hope to see Super Mario Galaxy 2 Nintendo Switch port/remake plz Nintendo hear my wishes. SUPER MARIO GALAXY WAHOO! 🌌
Demolition man? I’ve played that 3 times and never failed y’all must be on something lol
i refuse to replay darks souls 1-3 because of blightown and especially the gutter from ds2 oh my gosh these were nightmares for my life
21 every level Ashley talks in resident evil should be on this list lol
I Say, Ocarina of time , horse race to win Epona pet. It' s savage. I managed to beat It a few times only.
One more entry guiding Luigi in Dark Moon edges is tremendously frustrating not worthwhile the efforts spent.
Ingo definitely cheats in the second race by abusing his horse with constant dashing. I’ve found I can pretty reliably win by starting off with several dashes for an early lead, then occasional dashes while hugging the fence so he can’t pass.
While frustrating the library is still one of my ce levels in halo
I just recently beat the Great Bay temple and come on , it's not that bad, it's shorter and much better than OOT's water temple
OOT is probably why people don't like it
The freaking black gulch from ds2
Why wasn't King Fortress 2 stage from Mega Man and Bass not on the list?
I'm not a fan of any these games with the exceptions being: Contra; Sonic the Hedgehog; Halo 1. Combat Evolved; The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask; GoldenEye 007; Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles; Super Mario Galaxy 2;
I must be the only person who has never had any issues with the demolition man Misson
All of Tomb Raider 3 lol. I love that game but oh boy it almost had ten year old me break my ps1 controller.
Phazon Mines from Metroid Prime should be on here
The Library on Legendary is what separated gamers from casuals lol
There’s a level in super Mario sunshine where you’re completely dependent on the throwing pianta ppl - so cursed never beat it and deserves an honorable mention 😅
Frustrating and challenging are not the same thing. GIT GUD
I never found Demolition Man hard. Supply Lines however.
