Thank you for all these ideas Julie, I’m actually implementing the side table idea… i.e. a non-traditional night stand, just a small round table for a phone and a bottle of water at night. The only thing I’ve noticed, ( and I have commented on this before in a previous video ) the bedrooms you show are NOT small. They look more spacious than a bedroom in a traditional 5 room ranch house. If you can fit a bench at the end of your bed, as well as two nightstands and bureaus, your bedroom is not small. But that said, I can and have gleaned ideas from your informative videos videos. Thank you.

Love your Small Spaces series. My husband and I have downsized and I'm learning how to live in a much smaller home. I'm excited about it and have purged and purged to make sure our new home looks and feels roomy. I like learning how I can do it better and with an elevated design style. I’m in the process of adding shelving and drawers to our small closets and am struggling with decisions such as shelving vs hanging space, where to put shoes, etc. Regarding small bedroom solutions, a captain’s bed has been a game changer for us.
When my boys were younger, I made a peg rack for over their bedroom window. They hung their hat collection on it. Doubled as a window treatment. It was cute in a kids room.
To keep the small bedroom calm and uncluttered I put the tv on a dresser in the closet which was parallel to the bed. There was about 16 inches on each side of the bed so it really helped manoeuvring in the room and made it so cozy to curl up and watch Netflix before bed. Thanks for this video, it was very helpful and have to say you look adorable in that fabulous blouse.
Great information. I already have a hope chest at the foot of my bed. I don't usually sleep in there. For health issues, I sleep in a chair in another room. I get dressed in there. I need to get a cushion for it. Thank you for sharing!
I'm a renter so I can't paint or hang shelves on the walls. I'm working on de cluttering and downsizing is a must in my space. I got rid of a big dresser today that only had 3 small drawers, a huge mirror on it that was facing my bed that took up almost the whole wall, in that space will be 2 tall cabinets that will take up less space on that wall and give me a lot more storage for my clothes at the end of my queen size bed will be a cedar chest as soon as I move my bed to a better location it's to close to my door

Julie, we have medical beds that fit together for a leotard large king bed. Bed skits and platform beds don’t work with the mechanics of the bed. I still want it to look pretty. Do you know where I can source a bedspread that will go to the floor on a jumbo king, or offer another solution for bedding without a bed skirt or platform to cover the bottom of the bed.

I would love a video on how to decorate your bedroom when you have patterned flooring and cannot change it. I can't change my floor and would like to redecorate my bedroom but it's a bit complicated because my flooring tiles have like 4 colors.
A plastic Indoor/Outdoor rug could be the best of both worlds for you. Doesn't hold on to allergens, easy to clean, and covers up your current flooring.
Hi Julie Iove your content and watch all your videos. We are in the process of building a house in Florida and sad to say my husband passed away a few months ago so I will be moving alone. I will be furnishing the entire house with new furniture. I was thinking of just buying one nightstand and placing a chair either a recliner or some comfy chair on the other side of the bed to give it symmetry and take advantage of. my Waterview. You did mentioned that a chair can be an anchor, should I keep the chair slim or does it matter. Or should I buy 2 nightstands, although I see that my money can be better spent elsewhere. My biggest challenge in my small bedroom aside from lighting, insulation and privacy (it's a Jack and Jill room connected to my younger daughter's room) is the layout. My husband's side of the bed always gets pushed up against the window. The side of my bed also has eaves where I store a tension rod with her hanging clothes (she has no closet) along with storage drawers for sheets. Yes, this is a house that needs a lot of renovation but it is not in the budget now. Any ideas would be great. For reference, I have a 6 drawer dresser in front of my bed and an end table next to it holding a tv. My husband has a tall dresser on the opposite side of the windows next to the door. Thank you!

My issue is my bedroom door is on the wall adjacent to the closet, rendering that was too small for my bed. The wall across from my door has the window closest to the closet with double sliding doors. I have a corner desk across the room from my bed, not facing the corner. I have considered switching the location of the bed and desk by putting my bed on the wall with the closet. However, this will block part of the door by my headboard. The second door is already partially blocked by my vanity which is against the window and nearly at the foot of my bed for my plants to get natural light. The bed is currently on the only wall that does not have a door but this means the bed is right across from my door, which I know isn’t the best. How else could I rearrange my furniture? If that wasn’t confusing enough, walking into the room you immediately see my bed, window and vanity/plant home. The bedroom door opens to the right and is the only wall without a closet, window or door. To the left you’ll find a jewelry locking closet w/ mirror on door and shelves on the back (it spins). Behind that I have a corner desk not facing the corner. Behind the desk, is the wall with my double sliding door closet. My TV is in my closet on the shelf above my clothes since my bed is facing that way. Does that help a little? 😊

The open shelves here are touted as storage solutions, and yet almost all of the shots shown are of open shelves with countless bric-a-brac, which, frankly, only make a small bedroom feel smaller. Instead, you need places for sweaters and t shirts and socks.
Yes. They were all bookshelves. It was as if that section had been lifted from another video. My bookshelves are in the living room. I don’t have space for bookshelves in my bedroom. I don’t have enough clothes storage and I barely have room for a small wardrobe and am going to be getting rid of the one I have. The section following was much better - I really liked those photos.

@@loiscoburn331 yes, but they have to be deeper than bookshelves. In fact, I do this at home in my walk-in closet. Being cheap, I put up some standard shelves on wall brackets, and then loaded them with wine crates that serve as my drawers. But this only works with shelves about twice as deep as bookshelves.
Closet ideas would be great with recommended measurements too. I'm getting new flooring and taking opportunity to renovate three closets. I don't think the drywall was ever painted in there.
What would you do in my case? 93-1/2”x122” master bedroom, 1-off center window facing west so low light, 9’ floor-2-ceiling, door opens in to face window. Small but workable closet on south wall. Ideas? Room has white wall paneling floor to center. !?

Julie, thanks for this great class. It makes me feel I'm in right track... I want to believe I am 😁 -I'm having a hard time with the bench/storage. The bed footboard have an intricate iron design hence I don't want to cover it. I found a small storage bench that can serve as a small "coffee table" (once I put a tray on top) in the seating area. Will be OK to don't have the bench/storage at the end of the bed? -For the extra storage, I found a 7' tall /18"/ 8 panel folding screen. I was thinking to put it on the longest wall and use as a storage behind it. Thoughts ? Thanks -
Find beautiful storage that you can show off versus spending more money to hide it behind a screen Maria. Also the screen is not good Feng Shui for a bedroom with all the poison arrows. Unless you don’t subscribe to those principles, then it’s a non-issue. Show off your furniture, just like your bed 👍🏻☺️
Problem going into a small bedroom and I have 2 armoire but not the same. Big one and a smaller antique one. How wud I place them in bedroom one wall all windows . I really only have 2 walls . One where bed is placed . Can u put them together or no. Help.
Sounds like one of them can move to another room Victoria. There’s no rule that says all your clothes need to stay in the bedroom. If one houses linens, try relocating it to the guest bedroom to free up space
What really works for our bedroom is a bed with gas struts where the top (+ mattress and bedding on top) lift up and it's got so much room inside for bedding, sheets, towels, extra blankets and pillows for guests. The room is square so drawers or containers with casters wouldn't work. It makes it a tall bed but I love all the storage!! Plus small storage ottoman as side tables.

If I did a free standing wardrobe (or something custom to fill the wall) the spot I’m thinking of would be directly across from the window. How could I creatively incorporate mirror(s) on this wardrobe to reflect the light and not make it look outdated or tacky looking? Or are mirrored doors just too 1980?
Mirrors in the bedroom (especially reflecting the bed) is bad Feng Shui. But if that doesn’t bother you, then install what you like! It’s your bedroom, it should function the way you intend it to 👍🏻

I would love a video on how to decorate your bedroom when you have patterned flooring and cannot change it. I can't change my floor and would like to redecorate my bedroom but it's a bit complicated because my flooring tiles have like 4 colors.

A plastic Indoor/Outdoor rug could be the best of both worlds for you. Doesn't hold on to allergens, easy to clean, and covers up your current flooring.

Hi Julie Iove your content and watch all your videos. We are in the process of building a house in Florida and sad to say my husband passed away a few months ago so I will be moving alone. I will be furnishing the entire house with new furniture. I was thinking of just buying one nightstand and placing a chair either a recliner or some comfy chair on the other side of the bed to give it symmetry and take advantage of. my Waterview. You did mentioned that a chair can be an anchor, should I keep the chair slim or does it matter. Or should I buy 2 nightstands, although I see that my money can be better spent elsewhere. My biggest challenge in my small bedroom aside from lighting, insulation and privacy (it's a Jack and Jill room connected to my younger daughter's room) is the layout. My husband's side of the bed always gets pushed up against the window. The side of my bed also has eaves where I store a tension rod with her hanging clothes (she has no closet) along with storage drawers for sheets. Yes, this is a house that needs a lot of renovation but it is not in the budget now. Any ideas would be great. For reference, I have a 6 drawer dresser in front of my bed and an end table next to it holding a tv. My husband has a tall dresser on the opposite side of the windows next to the door. Thank you!

My issue is my bedroom door is on the wall adjacent to the closet, rendering that was too small for my bed. The wall across from my door has the window closest to the closet with double sliding doors. I have a corner desk across the room from my bed, not facing the corner. I have considered switching the location of the bed and desk by putting my bed on the wall with the closet. However, this will block part of the door by my headboard. The second door is already partially blocked by my vanity which is against the window and nearly at the foot of my bed for my plants to get natural light. The bed is currently on the only wall that does not have a door but this means the bed is right across from my door, which I know isn’t the best. How else could I rearrange my furniture?
If that wasn’t confusing enough, walking into the room you immediately see my bed, window and vanity/plant home. The bedroom door opens to the right and is the only wall without a closet, window or door. To the left you’ll find a jewelry locking closet w/ mirror on door and shelves on the back (it spins). Behind that I have a corner desk not facing the corner. Behind the desk, is the wall with my double sliding door closet. My TV is in my closet on the shelf above my clothes since my bed is facing that way. Does that help a little? 😊

The open shelves here are touted as storage solutions, and yet almost all of the shots shown are of open shelves with countless bric-a-brac, which, frankly, only make a small bedroom feel smaller. Instead, you need places for sweaters and t shirts and socks.
Yes. They were all bookshelves. It was as if that section had been lifted from another video. My bookshelves are in the living room. I don’t have space for bookshelves in my bedroom. I don’t have enough clothes storage and I barely have room for a small wardrobe and am going to be getting rid of the one I have. The section following was much better - I really liked those photos.

A simple solution would be to use decorative boxes or baskets on the open shelves to store T-shirts, socks, sweaters, even shoes.
@@loiscoburn331 yes, but they have to be deeper than bookshelves. In fact, I do this at home in my walk-in closet. Being cheap, I put up some standard shelves on wall brackets, and then loaded them with wine crates that serve as my drawers. But this only works with shelves about twice as deep as bookshelves.

What would you do in my case? 93-1/2”x122” master bedroom, 1-off center window facing west so low light, 9’ floor-2-ceiling, door opens in to face window. Small but workable closet on south wall. Ideas? Room has white wall paneling floor to center. !?
Center the bed on the wall, symmetrical nightstands, matching table lamps, anchor a corner chair in front of the nightstand/ window side and boom 💥 Perfect space plan 😉
I have a tall 4 poster bed...I need a step to get in. Should the nightstands be at the same height of the mattress? I’m concerned if so, the nightstands would be huge. Ty!

-I'm having a hard time with the bench/storage. The bed footboard have an intricate iron design hence I don't want to cover it. I found a small storage bench that can serve as a small "coffee table" (once I put a tray on top) in the seating area. Will be OK to don't have the bench/storage at the end of the bed?
-For the extra storage, I found a 7' tall /18"/ 8 panel folding screen. I was thinking to put it on the longest wall and use as a storage behind it. Thoughts ?

Find beautiful storage that you can show off versus spending more money to hide it behind a screen Maria. Also the screen is not good Feng Shui for a bedroom with all the poison arrows. Unless you don’t subscribe to those principles, then it’s a non-issue. Show off your furniture, just like your bed 👍🏻☺️
Problem going into a small bedroom and I have 2 armoire but not the same. Big one and a smaller antique one. How wud I place them in bedroom one wall all windows . I really only have 2 walls . One where bed is placed . Can u put them together or no. Help.
Sounds like one of them can move to another room Victoria. There’s no rule that says all your clothes need to stay in the bedroom. If one houses linens, try relocating it to the guest bedroom to free up space

What really works for our bedroom is a bed with gas struts where the top (+ mattress and bedding on top) lift up and it's got so much room inside for bedding, sheets, towels, extra blankets and pillows for guests. The room is square so drawers or containers with casters wouldn't work. It makes it a tall bed but I love all the storage!!
Plus small storage ottoman as side tables.

If I did a free standing wardrobe (or something custom to fill the wall) the spot I’m thinking of would be directly across from the window. How could I creatively incorporate mirror(s) on this wardrobe to reflect the light and not make it look outdated or tacky looking? Or are mirrored doors just too 1980?
Mirrors in the bedroom (especially reflecting the bed) is bad Feng Shui. But if that doesn’t bother you, then install what you like! It’s your bedroom, it should function the way you intend it to 👍🏻
