      The kiss was a big realization for Colin, but I think he would have come around to recognizing his feelings for her even if they hadn’t. (In the show) Pen was his little sister’s friend 1st & foremost, but Eloise isn’t in the way now. I honestly feel that Pen is Colin’s only true friend outside of his own family. This happened through the letter writing & I think when she stopped responding to him, this is probably when he noticed how important she is to him.

    The way Penelope feels like she is truly nothing hits me in the feels a bit. She may not be perfect but she deserves love just as much as anyone else and I am fully rooting for her this season. And the sad part is is that she has to find a love match all by herself rather than have her mother help her. All Portia does is berate and neglect Penelope for her older married daughters and sees her as a lost cause.
    And Eloise accidentally outing Colin and Penelope’s arrangement is probably why Pen didn’t tell Eloise she was Lady Whistledown in the first place. She is so sloppy and cannot keep her mouth shut for the life of her. If she had told her her secret, she would’ve probably accidentally blurted it out where someone would overhear. It’s also probably why she didn’t tell Eloise about her feelings for Colin either. Like Cressida said, she’s indiscreet.

    • @KforFreedom
      @KforFreedom 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +22

      It’s a lot different in the books but in the show, Eloise needs to learn a lot about being a good friend. It’s clear she didn’t really listen to Pen as much as she should have when they are close. & she doesn’t give Pen an opportunity to explain why she wrote about her…. the truth is Eloise got herself into trouble with the Queen, so she wasn’t blameless for the scandal. My guess when she sees Pen write about her own scandal, she might be starting to understand that.

    THANK YOU! Oh my God, such a large part of Bridgerton S3 discourse has been less than stellar because people genuinely didn`t catch Colin`s disconnect in terms of emotional intimacy and pretending, when all they had to do was pay attention.
    This is what I mean when I said this season is,in particular, for fans of older period dramas.
    The conflict he goes through is SO interesting,because he`s esentially trying to fit the mold of a rakish Bridgerton male lead formula and failing. It`s not derived from trauma,but from being lost and insecure.
    As for the brothel scenes,they do actually have a neat reason for existing outside the, ehm obvious. There are two and they`re essentially there to showcase what is fulfilling to Colin. For example,with the one here,he says he`s late and has to cut the appointment short, but he actually still ends up waiting for Penelope at the market - he got there a lot earlier. And we can infer from his body language how much more present he is with her. Plus, I feel like the one who influenced his decision to visit brothels was Anthony,way back in Season 1,and it`s neat to see that Colin actually took that as serious advice. There is so much to pick up on.

      Yes! Colin being a shallow flirt is *supposed* to be jarring and gross! He's an insightful sweetheart who buys perfect gifts for his family members (A Very Bridgerton Christmas Episode WHEN?) and thinks of ways to make Penelope feel comfortable enough to be herself and enjoy being out in society. He is a romantic who cries easily and is exhausted by trying to pretend he's not.

      I just wish we were able to hear it more. I mean, it sounded so faint.
      And aynsley broom mentioned that part of his jealousy came from her gossiping with someone else since that used to be their thing. All these details they sprinkle in man.
      And the fact that the person she was talking to had a disability and there was no stigma around it.
      Half of me feels like it tokenism and the other half is glad they are finally bringing people with disabilities on the show especially since Francesca is autistic coded in the eyes of fans.
      As someone with two disabilities, I love seeing more representation, but I also know that a lot of the time, it is either two scenes and never seen again or stereotypes so that is why I felt it was tokenism with the person who was deaf at the beginning and lord Remington.

    Notice how the girls who were talking shit about Penelope at end of episode were the same girls she hyped in Ep-1 for being the catch of the season. This szn I really felt for Pen like all the things she wrote in whistledown about herself also because she believes them to be true like she is undeserving of love.
    She is already insecure about herself (like whenever Colin genuinely compliments her response always like don't mock me, don't say things you do not mean) on top of that she has family who constantly stomps her confidence and treat her like a doormat.

    I actually think the brothel scenes served the purpose of showing how unattached and emotionally disconected Colin was in his sexual life. He craves the emotional connection in sex as well, so he didn't know real pleasure until he was with Penelope.

    • @notevenfunny_
      @notevenfunny_ 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +30

      While I do understand that, I wish they hadn’t been as gratuitous with them as they were. Maybe show Colin leaving the brothel and we see the disconnect in Luke’s (Colin’s) face instead of showing the threesome itself. Audiences cannot connect as much with the pairing if they see any individual from the pairing be intimate with another person who isn’t the love interest, y’know? Maybe the second brothel scene should’ve been Colin walking into the brothel, and we hear is heart racing, we see that same disconnect in his face that Luke portrays so well, but it’s paired with us hearing Pen’s voice whispering his name, maybe flashbacks to scenes from this season and season 2, that scene of them having eye sex basically, then we flash back to current day Colin with his hand on his chest because he’s having a panic attack then he quickly gathers himself and leaves the brothel. I feel a scene like that would convey that much better than the actual brothel scene we got.

    • @michellebenincasa6872
      @michellebenincasa6872 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +18

      I think there's a bit of misinterpretation about the brothel scenes that comes from the cultural differences between our current social mores and the one depicted. Here's the thing: back then, going to brothels was all but a standard rite of passage and a social activity for young men of the ton. The reason we didn't see Anthony and Benedict doing this is that they were both well past that stage and on to mistresses, widows, and the demimonde by the time the series started. But Colin is a fair bit younger than them, so we see him finally give up on trying to chart his own romantic path and give in to the peer pressure (even from his brothers) to indulge this way. They all kind of razzed him and insulted his manhood and maturity after the Marina incident, that basically it was his fault that he was played like that and it wouldn't have happened if he had more "experience." So he finally went and got some.
      , with women who knew the score and wouldn't be hurt by him not loving them (like he was hurt by Marina using him). He even went so far as to take two at a time so there was no way to mistake it for anything but a purely physical thing. It's the male equivalent of what Eloise is doing ("if you can't beat them, join them" so to speak). The proof of this comes later in the second visit (iykyk). The social bit of this is the young men he hangs with are likely the ones he went with both times, though it's only explicitly presented that way the second time. Drinking and wenching were things those kinds of guys did regularly then and thought nothing of it. They mentioned that he's more fun this season because now he goes with them and last season he obviously didn't. I believe it's performative to get everyone off his back and pretend that he's like his brothers (a grown man of the world), rather than the wounded romantic that he is. Frankly, I think the same is true of his awful flirting routine. I think the lessons he gave Penelope were similar to the ones he likely received from the contessa he met while traveling. I bet that is why they went to so many cities so fast - so he could practice and get better with every port before going home with more confidence than he had when he left. Better to try your act (and fail miserably, like Pen) in front of strangers you will never see again. He simply hasn't clued in yet that he's actually been in love with Penelope for years and that's why none of his other attempts at romance work or even feel right. He keeps thinking love has to hit you all of a sudden like it did with Anthony and Daphne, not that you could be friends first and grow into love gently. But he so did. Proof of that is how he goes down bad the moment he finally kisses Penelope. He can barely look at another woman sexually after that, not even two naked ones making out in front of him. He is a one woman man. I also kind of think that his journal reread after the kiss will clarify for him that what he was really writing about was fantasies woven from memories of Penelope and things he was learning about women and sex so he could please her. Just like his dreams. I bet part of his reaction to her reading his journal was the terror of what part she might read. I think he may have written about her (or to her by proxy because she wouldn't reply to his letters) in there. It would explain why he needed to check the page she read after she left (like, omg, did she read that thing I wrote about how much the Contessa's soft high breasts reminded me of her when I was drunk in Vienna?!...Ruby necklace or not). While we pretend for a moment that his brothers' casual and manipulative sexual relationships with women were somehow less problematic than Colin seeing pros for his education and release, let's be real. There's not a whole lot of differences there, except maybe weighted towards Colin. He never lied or coerced or made the women feel bad. He took what they offered and was actually fairly kind and respectful in the process (he never demanded the show, he saw to their pleasure as much as he could, and he didn't leave when he was uninterested, which likely would have gotten them in trouble). For a working girl at that time - he was an ideal client. If it was taking place here and now, I would react badly, but not there and then. Plus, how exactly do you think he was supposed to learn how to please his woman if not with other women? His technique took practice. That carriage scene would have gone quite differently with season 2 Colin. Just saying. 😉 😅 🔥

    It's nice not to be constantly pissed off at the Featheringtons this season. Like Portia is harsh on Penelope bc she wants her not to have expectations or hopes, but also wants her to not "mess up" the The Debling "fluke". Bc she knows that her future depends on Penelope...

    Penelope definitely went hard on herself because she felt she had to after being exposed so publicly, but maybe also doing some extra self-punishment via Whistledown after what she has written about Marina/Colin/Eloise. She's at such rock bottom she just gulps down her own poison because what's left to her in that moment but her most vicious impulses and self-loathing for what she's done to people she genuinely cares about?

    Not going to lie. ..I was so disgusted and angry at everyone whispering and mocking Penelope that the scene solidifed a feeling I've had for some time, which is fu** these shallow empty people who are outwardly polished and inwardly as rotten as leavings on the slaughterhouse floor. Surely there must be a group of people who value kindness and knowledge who are also part of the ton...why don't they band together and use social shame to stop this bullying? Why are people like Penelope mocked and cast out while "mean girls" are considered so desirable? I know it wouldn't have been as dramatic but I would have loved to see Penelope stare all those horrible people down with Colin right by her side saying, yes, I'm helping her what's your problem? It should be considered shameful to treat people this way. Thanks for coming to my lecture!

    I'm glad you said something about the unnecessary nudity.
    It really struck me this season how Bridgerton is falling into a harmful stereotype of using sex workers only to show the hero sleeping with them casually so that the heroine seems so much..."better" than them in comparison
    Especially since these same sex workers are used for a later scene that made me go "Oh! Stop right there! That is skewing hard into male gaze trope that's so shitty"

  • @maaiker2977

    20:40 exactly the friends to lovers trope feels different. Its not excitement kinda passion cause there is already a lifetime of foundation there. Its not "I can't wait to learn all about this mystery person" cause they already know each other. Its love instead of IN love. Because they know each other at their core already it c*ts deep and its more awkw*rd and child like. The relationship isn't so much physical but emotional and they care for each other in a family sorta way. Its sweet. Seriously best friends to lovers trope I ever saw was a Chinese mini-series called "hidden love". Not at all physical but oh boy the emotions. Best trope ever. Cause you see the echo's of their childhood friendship in their relationship. He slips right into the family-in-law cause he was the appendix to that family for years already. They already know, trust and love him as their own kid. I don't think Bridgerton will outperform Hidden Love but I do enjoy this trope very much.

    You wondered about Colin's response to discovering Pen is LW. Colin sees the world in such back n white terms, I think discovering who LW will not only change his view of Pen, but rumble the foundations of his world view. I'm looking forward to it. I had to go through a similar life experience where my world was so torn up, I didn't recognize the landscape when all was said and done. He will be a stronger less naive man when this is over. Hopefully he'll maintain his sweetness.

    I like what you were saying throughout this episode about how both Colin and Pen are looking for external validation in this front half of the season and how Colin needs to learn to take his own advice and Pen needs to learn not to see Whistledown as something separate from her, but a part of her. I would really love to see them pushing each other towards the kind of growth we want to see from them in the back half of the season. Kinda going back to what Daphne said in S2 about there being something in all of the Bridgertons that requires a challenge. I’d like to see them challenging each other to be their true selves. As nervous as I am for what’s coming in part 2, like this level of tension/conflict has just as much potential for growth as it does for regression, and I’m just trying to remind myself that Luke and Nicola are really happy with the finished product and so I hope I will be too lol. Having said that, I didn’t love the threesome. I get that Colin’s whole arc is about him returning to himself, being okay with being different from other men in the ton, and I've made my peace with that, but it's not my favorite choice they made. Although, I'm glad the Polin podcast I listen to talked about that leak and I was mentally prepared for it. that I Besides that scene, though, this does remain my favorite episode of part 1. This episode has the most of what makes me love Polin so much.
    Other little (or not so little) bullet point thoughts I needed an outlet for:
    --- That light sage green dress with the velvet bodice in the beginning is one of my absolute favorites of hers this season I'm in love with it and her 😍😍
    --- COLIN PUTTING HER HAND ON HER BACK AT BRIDGERTON HOUSE THIS MAN DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO BE JUST FRIENDS WITH THIS WOMAN
    --- Window Pen is so beautiful, I hate that she’s so sad 😭
    --- Pen talking to Colin about how difficult it is to write effortlessly and how suspicious is would be if Whistledown hadn’t written about her…I feel like she’s letting her guard down around him now in a way I don’t think S2 Pen would’ve done with him or Eloise and I wonder if subconsciously she kinda wants him to figure it out or she wants to tell him, even though she knows he’ll be v upset bc she regrets how it went down with El and a part of her wants to do it differently with him, but I also think obviously the fear still outweighs the guilt.
    --- Your reaction to their first kiss is so accurate. That kiss was so perfect. You can see on his face the second he decides to do it and it’s just the sweetest kiss and then she doesn’t even look up at him at the end bc if she did, she’d have seen he is absolutely ruined for anyone else and this really was how he needed to realize his feelings for her. I love that it’s before Debling really comes into the picture. We see him be a little bit jealous of her gossiping with someone who isn’t him, but the jealousy isn’t what makes him realize his feelings for her, she fucking makes him realize his feelings for her.
    --- I'm so excited to see your ep 3 reaction, I'm cackling just thinking about it 😂
    --- Really enjoyed the new editing style!!

  • @DariaElGrellPozina
    @DariaElGrellPozina 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    Tbh the more time passes and the more I re-watch s1-s3p1 the less I think Penelope did anything wrong with Marina and Eloise. Neither were a "good deed", neither is sometihng to be proud of and maybe there were better solutions. But both were tough decisions made under pressure to resolve a situation that could turn into a lifelong disaster for the people she loved.
    No one listened to her when she tried to stop Marina and Colin from getting into a hasty fraudulant marriage. It sucks for Marina, especially since it's not even modern "she had modern sex ed so she knew what she was getting into by sleeping with a man". She obviously didn't want to marry sacks of bones and teeth that were old enough to be her grandfathers and wanted what's best for her and her child, and Colin turned up at the right time in the right place with the right values. And he could've been paying for Marina's mistake his whole life.
    Same with Eloise- she never listenes to people, and keeps bulldozing over everyone. She literally knows almost nothing about Penelope, saying "looking for a husband doesn't sound like Penelope" and "we said we were gonna be spinsters together". Multiple times Pen tried telling her of her desires and problems only to be talked over. And when she tried telling Eloise that she was putting herself in danger time and time again Eloise still thought she was smarter than everyone and nothing she does will ever have any consequences. And when it comes to it, would it be better if Bridgertons were living under the ire of the queen or under a scandal that sounds like dozens of other scandals happening in the ton every week? So when the finale fight happened, I was absolutely agreeing with Pen, she DID protect El from the Queen and Eloise WAS getting insufferable with her 2 obsessions of finding LW and proving how special she was without actually doing anything special.
    Obviously those are not the only 2 examples of her sheet causing harm, so it's not a "Lady Whistledown is a good thing, actually" take, but being completely fair she started a business as a teen girl in a world where some adult women don't have an ounce of that influence, money and power. Her own father is more inept at having money than she is. And yet she was ready to give it all up because she felt horrible for what she did to Eloise. And what did she get in return? Her "best friend" turning her room upside down and throwing every possible insult into her face and her only other friend saying publicly that he was practically embarassed to talk to her in public. LW is not healthy but she quite literally has nothing else. Even after all the scandals both Bridgertons get treated waaay better by the ton than she ever was and her all her horrible public missteps were being fat, shy and from a gaudy family.

Colin never liked LW since Marina but after Eloise his hatred for her has grown and the more time they spend together without him knowing just makes me more nervous. I really try to enjoy their scenes together because they are just so precious but I keep thinking about LW and I just get stressed out. Fran is an infj. An analytical introvert who is emotionally very deep. Anthony can't "cure" introversion, sorry. And this personality type can't stand small talk (its like being forced to d*mb yourself down and waste everyone's time), attention gives them the cre*ps (the bug under a microscope feeling), they don't like judg*ment of others nor care for it. The dance and especially being the diamond will get a "what fresh h^ll is this?" kinda response from Fran. Also her going home and not drinking the lemonade,that was a statement that she already found what she was looking for,has no interest in lemonade guy and its a polite way to tell him so and staying there any longer would just be a waste of her time. So she left.
    Them sitting in silence. "How will they get to know each other if they don't talk?". They are communicating. The rest of her family just has the emotionally depth of a teaspoon compared to Fran. They like to just be in the moment and chill. And with his music he showed he is willing to try and talk on her level. They are speaking the same language so to speak. Nothing an infj likes more is to be understood and respected enough to be left to be herself. Her suitor didn't need to sit there for hours trying to talk her into liking him. Him just being himself, understanding her and letting her be herself and life a chill life said all she needs to hear from him. The other guy by contrast will only talk himself OUT of the running with any word he says. Which is why he could simply leave and let the other guy dig his own gr^ve. 😂

      Pen spent so long with Colin on a pedestal and now he's come down off it and Colin needs to speedrun that journey for her, she's not a damsel he needs to save (not that I don't love his protective vibes because she DOES have her vulnerable moments in society where he shields her,) but a capable, flawed woman on an equal footing with him.

    I also hate how many people are saying Luke Newton is a bad actor because of the flirting scenes, when the whole point of those scenes was to make the audience feel like something was off.
    And based on how many people are saying Colin gave them the ick in Ep 1&2, the scenes worked as intended. Yet instead of commending Luke, they’re making fun of him because they think the scenes are meant to be taken seriously🤦
    I have no high expectations for the audience’s reaction to Part 2. I truly believe Colin Bridgerton will always be misunderstood.

    Thank you for acknowledging the trauma that Game of Thrones left us with regarding display of nudity and well other explicit stuff. This is the first time I have seen someone say so. I have felt it for years that GoT messed with my head with its depiction of sex ( like majority of it was simply WRONG kind of sex - from in**st to such brutal display of s**ual violence) and everyone and I mean everyone told me that I was overreacting and overthinking it. I actually stopped watching series' of any kind for years because of it. I only watched Bridgerton after the 2nd season was out and I saw an interview of Simone and Johnny (our Kanthony❤) talking about how it was very safe and comfortable for both of them during the filming of intimate scenes. And now watching Nicola and Luke talk about their process of sex scenes with such genuine positivity is almost healing in a way. I am so happy for such positive depiction of intimacy. Can't wait for part 2 of Bridgerton season 3.❤❤

    For Penelope, Whistledown is her way of having a voice when as herself she is invisible. I can really tell this season that she enjoys people caring so much about what she has to say. Whistledown is how she expresses herself, and I think once she gains confidence to express herself fully as Penelope, she won't need Whistledown.
    That being said, I don't think the show would be the same without Pen as Whistledown, so maybe she will evolve how she does it to make it more healthy instead of quitting.
    On the subject of her dragging herself in her own column.. I think she justifies it to herself as trying not to be suspicious and just repeating what the ton said about her, but in truth, she really does internalize what people think of her... and her harshness on herself in Whistledown is the negative feelings she has about herself bleeding into her work unintentionally. She's not really one to be overly mean or exaggerate as Whistledown, she just writes what she believes to be true, but she is unnecessarily cruel to herself in her writing because those are her real thoughts/feelings.

    This is a random rant but i really liked how the second season was much less exploitative and explicit with sex scenes but kept the steamy and the hot vibes that are expected of the series, so it kinda bothered me how many sex scenes were used already in the first half of this season for the horny value and that's it, they were clearly fan service and i felt like they sometimes came so out of nowhere. i was like damn why is there suddently boobs in my face?
    To each their own, but i really thought they felt cheap and purpouseless at times, and i am no prude at all. But like why did i have to see Colin in a explicit threesome sex scene at two sperate occasions?

    I think they put the scenes with Colin and the ladies of the night to symbolize just how far he’s gone to try to be something he’s really not. It’s an intentional extreme they wanted to show. I knew he wasn’t like that. I could tell right away he was trying to live up to something that he could never be.

    I don’t know if you’ve read the books but I always laugh a little when she says thank you after the first kiss. In the books he’s actually really offended because he doesn’t want her to think it was just a pity kiss, granted the whole first kiss in the show is waaaay different from the kiss in the book (only some of the same lines are used). Also the dialogue Colin has with himself before and during the first kiss in the books is one of my favorite book moments ever.. it’s so fk adorable, def recommend! (Keep in mind the first kiss, carriage scene and first time are waaaay different in the book, even if they do use a lot of dialogue and moments from the book.)

    Personally, I don't like the "life-changing kiss" trope. I know it came from the book (from comments, I can't read these books 😅) but it just instantly lowered the quality of Polin's love story. I would have preferred his lessons going on and him falling in love with her as she got better charming gentlemen. It feels too cheap and easy to turn the love switch on with a kiss. But that is my opinion.

    I've really enjoyed Eloise's inner conflict concerning Penelope, it's a show of that compassion I was hoping to see after her actions last season. I can see how she's protecting Penelope in keeping the LW-secret but I think she's also dodging having to own up to being a negligent older sister.
    Before S3 release I was hoping for Frannie to find out about what all Eloise was doing in Bloomsbury and how she gambled with Frannie...and Hyacinth's, for that matter, possibility for future happiness and marriages. Now I'm wondering if it'll cool Colin's ire at all for Eloise to confess she wasn't just going to Bloomsbury to meet political radicals, she was going to meet one political male unmarried bachelor radical.
    I'm hoping Penelope learns that LW has served it's purpose for her, allowed her to speak and be acknowledged in a way she couldn't accomplish verbally. If she can't quite command enough confidence to do it all the time on her own, maybe she can feed that social need within her marriage.

    Anthony in S1 said he should have taken Colin to brothels. (Same guy who had sex with a woman up against a tree and under the bleachers, not to mention all the sex workers.) The way Simon and Anthony talked, both likely had visited brothels in the past. This season, Colin's acquaintances talk about having sex, probably with sex workers.
    So Colin, who's trying to be like these men, also visits brothels. However, until now, Bridgerton scenes with sex workers have been transactional. Colin is the only one who interacts with them, making sure they get equal attention, and apologizes before leaving. They likely prefer him over a lot of their other clients. And having two women maybe comes down to it not being so intimate, as opposed to his scenes with Penelope.
    I'm not sure why the series decided on having this scene written like that, with nudity. But if it looks like a Game of Thrones scene, it'd be one of the more positive ones.

    In defense of Colin's teaching: whenever I teach someone something I always ask to see their level in the real thing first AND then do the corrections because I never want to start doing corrections without being certain they'll be useful.
    You included some clips of Colin's dialogue that is so contradictory that I thought the writers had forgotten about Colin's character but then I remembered episode 4 and was like "Ooooh...that actually ties it together!" So I feel more satisfied about his character.
    As for the 3some: at this point, I truly believe that that was for general audience: spoon feeding Colin's eventual character progression & to add the sexy to the show. Yes, us serious fans didn't care about how s2 only had 1 real sex scene but based on other ppls reactions who are clearly more casual viewers: THEY did talk more about lack of sex. The rest of us were just feral over the chemistry. And I really feel this is the case because when I saw colin flirting I was like "COLIN what are you doing??" But when the 3some came on I was like "wait wait WRITERS what are you doing??"

    As much as I enjoyed Pt 1, we needed more scenes of Colin "teaching" Pen how to be charming. So much time was devoted to other people that could've given us more Polin to gush over. I'm really hoping they course corrected in the latter eps.

    First, Daria. Thank you for the Darcy comparison because I have been comparing Colin to him non stop since rewatching the show and reading the book.
    Second, I love the theory of how Finch was waiting for actual consent from Phillipa before he went further. Finch, you lovable lovable man.
    Third: i hope pen and Eloise can make up. I have seen people ragging and pitting these two together all of the time and it is tiring. Eloise is trying to be a better person and still makes mistakes and I do love how she feels remorse for actions while protecting her brother and friend.
    Penelope is no saint either and I get that, but I don’t think she deserves the humiliation the ton gives her.
