  • MotoMan drives the biggest BMW ever: The 2019 BMW X7 xDrive50i. Yes, it has the same magnificent 456 HP twin turbo V8 as we drove in the BMW M550i, yes it has the trademark BMW kidney grille and yes, it does indeed look like an overgrown X5. However, MotoMan learns while driving the 2019 BMW X7 xDrive50i that it may be very plush, yet it is not is a BMW . . .

Nobody wants a luxury car. Why would they? A full blow luxury/muscle SUV does everything better with more comfort and room. Why not spend more money on a luxury SUV the entire family can use and you probably will spend more time in and on long road trips. It’s a 4.5 0-60mph monster. BMW owns and invented the luxury SUV category way back with the X5. Todays new X5/X7 crushes the competition.

Loved the video, but you misunderstood how the driving assist and traffic assist work. The normal driving assist can maintain your speed, distance to car ahead and steer the car for you but you are supposed to leave your hands on the wheel. The traffic jam assist is if you are on something like an expressway and you have te normal driving assist on but hit some slow moving traffic, it prompts you to activate a new mode that is hands off as long as the traffic stays slow. That traffic assist mode let's you be hands free indefinitely as long as the camera deems you are looking ahead and paying attention.

Not sure about your comment about how robust those vehicles are, from my experience in the industry, yes buying habits are looked into in engineering phase (mainly parts longevity/ service times), however, it’s more warranty cost that impact engineering and robustness, not leasing vs private buying.
In general I do agree that older cars seems to last more but, new cars with their extra added complexity of systems are engineered to even a higher standards than older cars.
I think newer cars won’t last as much as older cars, but that’s only because buyers habits are changing (I.e. more leasing), and the fact that we are becoming more consumers and want the latest and like to change cars often but not necessarily engineering standards that our dropping.

I think you’re spot on with the lease thing. I do not want to own a modern car after warranty in this day and age. My 2005 car starts to get closer to the end of its life (261.000km on the clock) and it starts to make no sense to keep fixing it when there are so many sensor that can go wrong and all the parts are so expensive.

After more than a century, you don't get to decide what BMW is, their history is built on going into new segments & building product superior & alternative to existing dull competition. So yes, this is a BMW, just as Isettas, motorcycles & jet engines are BMW.

In 2029, only 10 years after I made my initial comment, IF this thing is found for more than that, it will only be because it will have very very low miles and ALL maintenance, repair and recall issues addressed....but boy problems are coming, regardless. Still, while under warranty this is an amazing vehicle.

People shopping in this segment have tons of people and stuff to haul around. It's nice having more options with a 3rd row. The superior foreign build quality and available options are worth the price hike too.

Never has there been a more polarizing vehicle for me. While on one hand I'm absolutely in love with the X7, I'm simultaneously terrified of the track record for BMW maintenance and repair costs. I typically keep my cars for a long time so leasing is not an option for me. And while this is absolutely the most attractive vehicle in the segment for me, above the Escalade, Range Rover, G-Wagen, and Navigator. I cannot convince myself that it will last over 150k miles. I wish I could have this SUV with a Lexus LX drivetrain. In other words BMW performance with parts built to last a lot longer. That's my dream vehicle.

Why are you so focused on the family aspect!? If someone can afford a 90-140k car, their kids are likely much older and more mature and therefore unlikely to be a worry in terms of white leather, bench seats, or any of the other things you pointed out. And brand loyalty is definitely a thing at the top end of car shopping, people who can afford cars above the 80-90k dollar mark like what they like and are rarely going to switch, or they will have certain cars from certain brands. An example would be my family, we have an X3 M40i and an S560 4matic. Clearly they are the best in their segment. Now as for the X7 not being a “BMW”, they have changed over the past 5-7 years to become a more well rounded brand, and as a consequence they have the most rounded cars on sale today. Having test drove the X7, it is the most “BMW” in the segment by far, while also maintaining the most comfortable ride. Consider this as well, most people in America, where the X7 will sell the best, drive with only themselves in the car. Especially people with large expensive cars. They don’t give a toss about family practicality. They want the best features, best build quality, best reliability, and best brand prestige they can get, just as they would in the full size luxury sedan market. The world has been this way for a while, weird that some people haven’t realized that.

MotoMan, very interesting. Please share your thoughts on what is the best luxury sedan on the market that will last 250k miles. Like some other viewers, I'm disappointed with the SUV/CUV craze. Would be nice if more touring models were available, but Americans don't understand much about vehicles/driving dynamics/or simple mechanics. Automakers are catering to the buyer who cares nothing about performance; rather all the electrical gimmicks. Thanks in advance for any comments. Just throwing ideas out to see how you and others feel...

I've been giving your question a lot of though as to why do buyers of this segment still buy more American brands that any other segment. From my existing knowledge and a little research, my guess is that it's a combination of buying inertia for decades combined with the Escalade and Navigator not totally sucking when competition did finally show up (unlike other products).
The question should be asked, what did well-heeled buyers with large families drive in the decades previous? And I'll set the table as that a "large family" requires a 7 passenger vehicle or more. According to the Cadillac Database online, Cadillac began selling a large 7 passenger sedan all the way back in 1915, coinciding with the early V8 engines. This is a differentiation from a limousine product (where your man drives you) which Cadillac had introduced in 1911. As time went on, this 7 passenger product got renamed the Fleetwood 75, to which there was a limo version (with a partition) and a regular extra-large sedan version. You might think that the non-limo version would only be purchased for livery duty but into the 1950s, Cadillac was still marketing it in sales brochures toward larger families of means.
But a different vehicle began to get traction mid-20th century and that was the station wagon. Although the first were introduced before WWII, all of those products were marketed as livery vehicles, largely serving train stations (hence the name). Post-WWII, wagons were marketed to families and sales took off. And it was again a very viable option for a wealthy family to buy a Buick Roadmaster wagon versus a Cadillac Fleetwood 75 if you had a pile of kids, dogs and gear.
And then a new vehicle type showed up in the early 1960s....what we call now the full sized SUV. Jeep introduced the Wagoneer and began marketing it early to wealthy families that needed a truck that could still be a luxury vehicle around town (some of the earliest sales literature had it around polo horses). The Wagoneer was a replacement for the earlier Jeep Station Wagon introduced right after WWII and began it's life as a classic "woodie". Back in the 1990s I took a ski trip to Aspen and I was amazed at how many Wagoneers were there, even though the product had been discontinued by this point after a 30 year run. It was like Aspen was the place where Wagoneers went to die. And yes, I realize that the Chevy Suburban had been around since 1936, but the Suburban in its first decades was strictly a work truck or livery vehicle and wasn't marketed at families. The sales literature doesn't even mention the Suburban as a viable option for families until 1972 when it was finally included in the "wagons" literature. And the Cadillac Fleetwood 75 non-limo was finally killed in 1976 although by this time, it was marketed toward livery duty....the Fleetwood Brougham (the renamed 60 Special) became the large vehicle of choice in the early 70s.
With the Wagoneer gone in 1991 and wagons themselves being replaced by minivans and smaller SUVs, families wanting this class of vehicle continued to buy Suburbans and GMC Yukons until the Lincoln Navigator appeared for the 1998 model year and the Escalade was introduced a year later. And while there was a foreign option for the Range Rover available during this time period that saw many buyers, that car was never the size of the American vehicles. Another competitor in this category was the Toyota Land Cruiser and while that car has a history dating back to the 1950's in other markets, it only really became a thing in America for the 1990 model year (and the twin Lexus LX in 1996). With the Mercedes GL appearing in 2007 and the X7 only now showing up, both Cadillac and Lincoln have had time to ensure that their two most profitable vehicles are still considered viable leaders in this segment, having lost leadership with their other cars since the 1970s.

MotoManTV, I would really appreciate your honest opinion. If I were interested in a SUV which truly you would recommend me?
Let's start by saying price is not too much of an issue. I know any brand and any car can break because they're not perfect, but I do want reliability and longevity. I'm more into performance but luxury does come closely in second. I don't mind gas mileage either. It could be a two row or three row SUV, I don't mind that.
So with these few points, which SUV would you seriously recommend? Which SUV do you think would do me justice on my taste?
Please choose at least three options, since I might not like the looks of the one you pick if it was a single pick.
Thanks in advance and I love you're videos.

I just bough X7, I did consider all 4 options. I think that is because perception is that with big SUV reliability and quality appear to be close between all 4. Reason I went with X7 is it has more features than Navigator, more comfortable than GLS (2019), and Escalade will have new generation which not available here plus it only come with V8 and for this kind of car I prefer V6.

My observation about the luxury SUV segment is that they are often purchased for the status. To some that means the newest model, regardless of the brand. So it could be a Volvo XC90, BMW X5, Range Rover, Porsche Cayenne or Audi Q7. US vehicles are less common here in Norway, but the big American SUVs are purchased by the same, somewhat macho, segment of customers that buy the Toyota Landcruiser.

You spent too much time on the things other reviewers have gripped about, like slow seats. Your the guy that always covers driving dynamics. When I saw this pop up I thought you would review driving dynamics against the other luxury soccer mom tanks. My wife had the GLS for 4 years before the X7. I HATED that thing (she loved it) and it’s driving dynamics. I’ve driven all the 3 row luxury tanks and the X7 is the “BMW” out of the bunch. It converted my wife to BMW! I was hoping you would compare against these cars and not against a regular car.

Very fair points all the way around. A bit behind the scenes on all my episodes to answer your question: We don't shoot them right away, rather take some time to get to know them. We combine that with some pre-research and come up with an 'outline' for the Run of Show. Yes, there are some variations but ALL episodes get driving dynamics, pulling/pushing power and some variation of steering/brakes/transmission as it is required to help tell the story. As of late, the #OptionsGame. This episode got all of those - multiple. In fact, it was shot with both a driving dynamics AND a 'ride quality' segment. It was in the edit, that we decided to pull out a drive dynamics segment as it was only focused on the air ride/adjustable suspension because it said virtually the same thing as the ride quality bit. Everything else that was presented was what 'spoke' to me about this car. It is super plush. It is a super cushy ride. It is VERY fancy on the inside. It has a KILLER stereo (also didn't make the final edit), but a BMW it is not - which is not to say it is bad. Appreciate the respectful discussion, your choice in your daily drivers and your viewership. MM

As someone who's owned both mercedes and escalades (and cayenne & hummer), the answer to your question is because there are not many options in this large luxury SUV space, and the escalade offers the best bang for buck in terms of size, standard features, status, and importantly, discounts. Escalades are heavily discounted. You could get one with an msrp of $90k for like 75-80k, which makes them more realistically and financially competitive with foreign rivals.

  • @pnwautocar5291
    @pnwautocar5291 4 ปีที่แล้ว

The reason for the discrepancy is all about family, practicality, and price. We’ve gone from Suburban LWB to GL/GLS and now to Ford Expedition. It’s all about the usage. We used to tow more (horses, boats, etc), Hence the American big boy towmobile. We also needed all 8 seats and room for the dogs (Hence the Suburban LWB.) oh, btw the ‘Burban was an LTZ. Then we bought the Mercedes. Here’s why. Reason #1. Safety and comfort. After years of driving a body-on-frame heavy full size, we were ready for something new. Enter the 1st gen GL. we switched to that. We no longer needed the size and heft of the suburban, and it was going to be far more reliable. We kept getting GL Diesels until 2018. Then we got an expedition. Why the change? Expense. The Big Benz was expensive. It was more financially effective to buy an Expedition. More room, more features, lower price. (By the way, this is a 2018 Ford Expedition 4x4 Platinum Standard Wheelbase). So brand loyalty is not that important in this segment. If there is a brand that offers what you need, that’s the vehicle you get. It’s not a spec for spec type competition here. It’s not about convincing your buyers to upgrade. Brand loyalty does not play a part in this segment because why should it? I personally feel like the GL was the best I hope we switch back the GLS when our lease is up on the Ford. That’s my two cents and greetings from Seattle.

Regarding the #OptionsGame, the last 4 contenders have a brand new Carrera between in them in options alone ... Santa Maria Madre De Dioes 😱.
As for the X7, I finally saw one (two actually) for the first time today. Its not as polarizing as I thought it would be in prison, I like it a lot actually. If I was looking, the new X7 M50i would definitely be my first choice.
I'm with you on the white leather, great? Yes! Practical? When pigs fly lol.
    ___
Regarding to why people would cross shop the German breed with the Escalade and Navigator. Well, the Escalade, Navigator & LX were basically it if you needed something of this caliber ... Lincoln and Lexus neglecting their offerings for almost 20 years made the Escalade the only game in town, but Zee Germans took notice and they're coming in hot. If GM fumbles the next Escalade (most likely will), it'll lose the segment.
    As always, excellent work, M.

For example, the Cadillac Escalade 6.2 4x4 has a German MSRP of 101,580 EUR, that's $113,800 by today's conversion. As for the X7 V8's, they are not yet available in Europe.

You drive off the lot, it drops $ by 20-30%. Same reason Apple started selling phones for $1500, just because they can - it’s a status symbol. MotoMan, Great “not BMW” review👍🏼. I think the reason why buyers in this segment are more open to different brands is because at this price point luxury is luxury...All these cars are considered Boss cars... whereas at the lower price points it’s more personal... it would be like Beverly Hills vs Bel Air. It’s all money... but people looking at other neighbors who may be very nice in their own rights but are far less expensive, those buyers are going to be far more particular and Discerning about where and how they spend there money and they are going to Nick pick far more about the area vs someone who’s buying a million dollar home that just wants to be where the money is.....I think if we were to do a study it would show that the less people spend on average the more picky they are... because when we have less to spend we want to make sure we get it right and that we get all of our dollars worth... whereas when it comes to cars especially people with more to spend often don’t think that way, they just want something that Screams Money and success.....

These things are what most current consumers are buying. Get used to it, bmw has to adapt to the market change. It is what it is. Fragile millennials and generation x are buying suvs and crossovers even trucks. Bmw cant just make 5 and 3 series and expect to sell and compete with fierce competition from benz, audi, lexus, caddy and genesis. You dont like, you dont buy, get a small car. All these makes make something sensible and affordable, or just buy a camry and call it a day. Its not BMWs fault that they have to adapt to market change. Expect generation y and people born today buying more electric and hydrogen cars in the future. Whoever "manufacturer"doesn't adapt to change is left in the dast.
