2020 BMW X7 | Not Just A Supersized X5

  • The new X7 can best be thought of as a stretched X5 and that's just fine by me. The latest X5 really impressed us with it's more luxurious cabin and the refinement of its ride. With the X7, BMW decided to set their sights higher than making an XC90 or Q7 competitor, and instead aimed straight for the jugular of the Mercedes GLS. It's apparent in the price tag, the performance, the size and, yes, even the luxury in the cabin. Does this make the X7 BMW's new American flagship?

I agree Alex, the front dash is gorgeous on the Benz and while it might come with a few more inches of leg room I’d still lean towards the X7. The overall quality of the interior is just on another level.

I found them cooler when they were cruder. The 1st gen diesel X5 had an AMAZING turbo whistle. Crossovers like that and SUVs like the FJ Cruiser are really cool. Today they are way more refined of course.

I must say...This is interior is quite impressive especially for a BMW. Glad to see that they are emphasizing luxury with the X7 vs just being an overgrown X5.

With the optional tow hitch, the X7's towing capacity is 7,500 lbs (not "just under 6,000 lbs" as stated in this video at 25:15).

I am on the fence between the GLS and the X7. This is the most thorough review I've seen to date on the X7, actually any car. Next, I have to scour your reviews for the GLS for comparison. Thank you!

I own both. GLS in Singapore and X7 in the US. I'll settle the score for you right now. You should get the X7. There's a reason why it took bmw so long to release this car. The quality, the drive, it shows my friend. The GLS drives boring, and whatever comfort the MB is known for the x7 matches and even does better.

This is an excellent review. I own a highly optioned 2020 X7 and truly love it. I came out of a Porsche Cayenne Turbo which is a more sporty SUV but when it comes to comfort the BMW blows it away. The BMW is the most silent car I've had and that includes a bunch of high end cars ie. Rolls Royce, Mercedes, Porsche, and Audi. I have the 6 cyl. engine and have never felt the need for more power. Fit and finish are as good as any of the high end makes. For all you get for the money, the X7 is a bargain.

There are a few features u didnt mention:
-There is built-in fragrance cartridges in the glove compartment.
-There is an off-road pkg available.
-There are cooling armrests in the front. (Option)
-There are lights in the front sunroof. (Option)
-U can get a full-size spare with matching rim. Tire is exactly the same size as the rest of them. Instead of being 1" smaller like most full-size spares.
-U can get the "individual" package which allows u 2 customize it fully bespoke.
    -It also has Android Auto.
-There is an M Sport 50i available.
Btw, that GLS looks like a two-tone Herse. Those rims & B-pillar chrome panels are ugly as well as the rear end side profile. But then again, Mercedes is Diamler/Chrysler after all.

Love interior and exterior will need to test drive I also like gls 450 but now this is also a huge competitor for the money you get a lot of driver assistance where gls 450 you have to pay at least close to 11,000 for those it seems like . This is great value for the money . Thanks for doing the reviews, your reviews are really good and thorough.

It may be difficult or impossible for a dog to jump into the back due to the 2-way split of the rear gate. The dog can't get support off a bumper while jumping in. The Volvo had that same problem. The tires have low profile which probably works well for German roads but is definitely bad for U.S. pothole ridden roads. No point analyzing this since this car cost about 20K/year considering depreciation, 40K if you need more than one etc..

The Kia Telluride can match the road noise level of this. So, for $100K plus, 69dBA probably shouldn’t be an A+ for luxury SUVs any more.
It could quieter still for $120K.

    • @ALMX5DP

One BIG DEAL is the fact that the 2nd row seats are EXTREMELY slow to open for third row entry, and if you opt for the captain's chairs (for pass-through access), you lose the ability to fold them flat. That alone is making me look at the Navigator for my family.

So sad that 3.0 diesel engine is not offered in US. One of the best diesel engines on the market.

You have to add an option package to get adaptive cruise control. Are you kidding me?

M4st3rm1nd man I was choose one of the lot that didn't have it and I regret it. And at the same time pissed that a base Toyota Corolla has adaptive cruise but I have to pay extra for it in my car that stickered $84k 🤦🏾‍♂️

Alex - do you ever do side by side comparisons?
I would suggest that in this segment that the autonomous driver aids should be another review segment.
I am a Navigator L (black label) owner. I’m cross shopping with the X7, GLS, Range Rover, Escalade and Grand Wagoneer.
I’m just tired of “disposable” cars. Manufacturers are creating amazing driving and luxury cars but they keep going into service for poor engineering and service times are horrible right now and this has created a lack of loaner vehicles.
My Navigator suffers from poor reliability. Transmission and drivetrain issues and the auto floorboards otherwise fit and finish and practicality and driving are great for our family.
We had the older diesel GL320 in past that had horrible reliability issues after the 70k mark and many issues started around 30k - I always get 100k warranty on our cars because we drive 24k/year.
If we can live with the limited luggage capacity of BMW it seems like best choice. I have 3 friends with late model and the newest Range Rover and all 3 have reliability issues in less than 10k miles. One other friend has a 2021 and no issues to date.
The grand Wagoneer is my favorite but it’s wifeys car and she would like a little sportiness and svelte size back when we are not in travel mode.
Please add current and historic reliability as a segment of your reviews and also autonomous driving features
At these prices I see some people cross shopping with Model x. I own a Model x also it’s not truly a family friendly vehicle and “true” car manufactures build better and more comfortable cars.

Did you change your Navigator? I am looking into these three cars, X7, GLS and Navigator. Was wondering what you finally settled on.
