My theory is that most screenwriters didn't had much social life as teenagers (ore even in college), so their main point of refference are the celebrity parties they see when they're already living in Hollywood

I think the worst thing about this is that a show centered on grown up versions of the Powerpuff Girls isn't a bad idea in and of itself. It just that the CW took the idea in the most lazy, uninspired direction possible.

Thing is we already had that idea done better. Back in the day there was this MMO called Fusionfall that took place in a slightly more "grown up" rendition of a Cartoon Network shared universe. Among the NPC's in the game were teenage versions of the Powerpuff Girls. And honestly the games depiction of them was pretty good

at least somebody ended making some slight balance to that with that fan film that I think came out a year or so after that movie came out. I was loosely familiar with the show via people in the Channel Awesome reviewer circles. But hadn't watched any myself. But I remember enjoying the fan film.
I thought the Misfits looked kind of cool in the post credits of the 2015 movie.
I don't think the rest of the movie will really be remembered. I think the only way that movie can be brought back up again is if somebody who was young when they saw it remembers it and kind of if going back through memories of their younger years and goes through it. Maybe seeing stuff they liked that made them happy or something and then maybe seeing stuff they didn't like and now see with slightly older eyes why certain parts might not've been good as they remember. And possibly after that maybe making one of those youtube essays on it for a particular topic or theme within that movie or maybe dissecting the movie and using parts they find to make potential memes or tikotok videos or something as far of some kind of Nostalgia cycle.

While I dislike the idea of Utonium being a show-dad since it's character assassination, the idea of using grown up former kid superheroes as a metaphor for the issues many child stars face and the problem with show-parents, over.merchandising and similar stuff is an interesting idea.
I don't like it as a Powerpuff-girls adaptation though. And while I am tired of seeing "evil Superman", I think it would've been better if they went the Brightburn route instead of just using the IP of the PPG.But, sadly, studios don't dare to bet on anything that isn't an established IP.

The show would have worked as a high school drama if they actually sat down and crafted a good and interesting narrative. A Parallel narrative about the powerpuff girls in High school that have left their superhero days and want to be normal teenagers and are caught in a chain of events that push them back into being superheroes. It would have been an interesting balance and mix of superhero high school flick but this time the girls are trying to juggle a normal life with the superheroics.

He raised three daughters who all grew up to be train wrecks, one of them is an alcoholic who pawned her engagement ring for freaking drug money, and one of them has literal PTSD at the thought of just going home, because he viewed his kids as a meal ticket instead of his children. He does not love them and Ms. Bellum of all people should have been able to see that.

  • @MetaGiga
    @MetaGiga ปีที่แล้ว +20

I mean, it really could have had a spark to it. Here’s how I would have done it:
    *First, the casting.*
Blossom is played by a natural redhead (we need more of that representation these days for fuck’s sake), Bubbles is played by someone who looks like who they casted for this (not gonna lie, she looked perfect for Bubbles regardless of the shit), and Buttercup is played by someone whose ethnicity is Korean/Japanese/etc. The Professor is played by someone who’s Jewish, Ms. Bellum is played by someone with Irish heritage, Mr. Mayor’s played by a little person (don’t look at me like that, they need roles too), the preschool teacher I can never remember the name of is Latina, and multiple other roles are played by other diverse people, but they actually resemble the source. There’s even new characters to include other ethnicities that aren’t mentioned in what I’ve listed.
    *Next, the story.*
The girls are in high school
or their last year of middle school; pretty much an older age than in the cartoon, but not too old to call them ‘girls’. Pretty much an age where it’s not taking advantage of child actors since adults that look younger can be casted in teenager roles.
After an incident happened years ago when they were younger, things went horribly wrong during a fight with one of the villains, which caused more casualties and destruction than the villain was causing on his/her own. This made the citizens rise up to force the girls to stop all hero work and they instead create their own elite force to combat the villains. They were hated so much that they had to change their own names and hair in order to not be recognized. At their home, however, they can be themselves and address each other by their actual names. They have to live somewhere else, however, because their own home was constantly being vandalized and The Professor feared for the girls’ already fragile mental health.
Blossom feels like everything is her fault and constantly apologizes, even for minor things and things that genuinely aren’t things to apologize for.
Bubbles has night terrors and sometimes cries in the middle of the night, as she has reoccurring nightmares of the incident.
Buttercup is prone to fits of rage and gets extremely upset whenever someone even remotely repeats what they’re saying over and over.
They live in a ramshackle house they all built together in the forest while their old house is routinely trashed despite them not living there anymore. The main reason why the house isn’t exactly the best is because the girls now seldom use their powers regularly out of fear that they would destroy something on accident. Yet despite their concerns, they still use their powers to protect The Professor whenever he’s in danger in the wilderness... Which is a lot since he’s not much of a woodsman.
He’s not the only one that they protect either. Because they still have a drive to help people in need, they save others who get in trouble in the woods. However, they quickly fly away before the people they save can see them.
(If anyone wants to see the rest, let me know! I don’t want this to be too long when nobody actually cares-)

For some reason which I can’t explain. I also imagined a live action Buttercup was Asian. Even as a kid.
Aside from her black hair, I was raised up during times with stuff from Cartoon Network. Ben 10 and all the works. I’ve seen appearances of female Asian character types that look like cool punkish types. I forgot the name of this, but kind of similar to GoGo Tomago from the 2014 Big Hero 6 animated film.
I think a few female characters from Older Power Rangers series fit this bill too. Too little me, these types always look so cool!

@NaquanGreen-zt4gr Oh, thanks! I actually went to town on making my own episode/fanfic after writing that. I’ll show you the first part of the episode I had in mind to replace the dumpster fire.
      *The first episode:*
The girls are getting groceries and different supplies in a Target-like Superstore. The girls’ 16th birthday is coming up (the day of it being the first airing of the PPG cartoon, but not the year) and hints imply that they don’t make much money (“You can get a treat, but be sure not to get anything on brand, girls! Cheaper means we can get more for what we have!”). However, when they go off, The Professor sneaks away himself for something.
Bubbles wanders over to the pastry area and sees a donut of her cartoon self, which she smiles at and is thinking about getting. However, a younger kid asks to get one first. When he’s given it and he takes a bite, Bubbles sees that it was filled to the brim with cherry jelly, which makes her eyes widen as she pieces together the intentions of it. Everything cuts to slow motion as there’s jelly on the kid’s face and there’s a close up of the large bite into the eye...
Buttercup goes over to take a look in electrical appliance aisle after she chose her treat in order to pass the time (there’s a scream in the background, which is Bubbles, but Buttercup can’t really hear her due to the sound). When she goes by the TVs, it’s turned to a channel that’s a sort of talk show and in it, the host (which seems to resemble Him slightly, but not enough to make it completely obvious) and the guest are making really awful jabs at the Powerpuff Girls. The moment when they start talking about The Professor, however, she throws the nearest TV to the ground and completely destroys it with her strength... Right in front of some nerdy employees. One of them takes his walkie-talkie and is about to call security, but the other one just eases his hand down because they really don’t want to possibly die.
Finally, Blossom was looking around in the clothes section when she heard Bubbles scream, then a loud crash. The series of events sounds to her like her sister is in trouble, so she starts to run to the direction of where the crash was... Only for someone to run right into her with a shopping cart with one of those toy cars on the front. This prompts Blossom to panic and start apologizing profusely... But unfortunately, it’s one of *those* people (“You brat! How dare you do that! Look at what you did! You hit my cart and made my baby scared!” as she points to a 5 year old kid, who’s still turning the wheel back and forth and doesn’t seem to give a shit).
The Professor hears everything as he waits by the checkout area and sighs. Calmly, he pushes his own cart and begins to get the girls. He finds Buttercup first, who found a place to hide in one of the clothes racks in case security was called on her. Next, he finds Blossom still dealing with the screeching lady and points out that he’s finding his children, so she should work on finding hers rather than yelling at a teenager. The woman looks into the toy car to see that his kid just up and left during the confrontation. Last, he finds Bubbles, who was in the toy aisle and had surrounded herself with various stuffed animals. He kneels down, gives her a big hug, and starts putting away the toys.
Finally, they all check out and go to their car (which looks pretty worse for wear) and they start to drive back to their house. Just before the girls start to apologize for making a scene, The Professor cuts them off and tells them that store didn’t need anymore money anyway, especially from a family with three perfect little girls. This statement makes Buttercup and Bubbles smile a little, but Blossom feels like it’s her fault that the mom lost sight of where her kid was and that she shouldn’t have been so rash. She then begins self deprecating herself, which makes The Professor look extremely concerned... Then after a few seconds, he gives the girls a goofy smile and tells them that while they were leaving, the four of them went through a time rift and that it was now their birthday! But it’ll only last for the rest of the day and after time goes back to normal tomorrow, their birthday will have already happened. The girls get that this is a really corny attempt at making them feel better about what happened, and they start to laugh and even Blossom starts to cheer up a little as everyone starts to play along.
Once they get home, The Professor makes the cake (it’s not exactly baking show perfect, but it has that homey birthday feel to it) and serves each of them a slice. The birthday song is sung, and just when the girls think their birthday is complete, The Professor gives all three of them gifts that they genuinely are surprised to get.
Bubbles gets a really nice sketchbook and some art supplies since she seems to be developing a love for art (Bob Ross poster optional).
Buttercup gets a pair of rollerblades and a helmet since she never lost her tomboy spirit and is interested in derby skating along with other sports.
Finally, Blossom gets books in advanced studies, as The Professor saw that she was interested in higher education (that’s the only thing that I’ll admit that the show got right about her adult self).
The three can’t help but use their powers to fly into The Professor to give him a huge hug, telling him that he really didn’t have to give them gifts like these. The Professor, however, doubles down and says that everyone deserves to be what they want regardless of everything that happens. After this, they all have the time rift birthday party and the instance at not-Target is completely forgotten.
*End of the first part of the episode!*

I honestly don't even understand why they would need to make the Rowdy Ruff Boys normal guys. Mojo creating them to replicate the creation of the Powerpuff Girls, but then not being able to control them seems like it would fit well into this setting still. They could even have them retire and start a bar together to reflect how they handled being super powered children differently than the girls going in a "the heroes grew up traumatized but the villains learned from their past mistakes and grew up mentally healthy" angle.

  • @JohnWilliams-cr2sz
    @JohnWilliams-cr2sz ปีที่แล้ว +11

What REALLY annoyed me about this whole thing is that the idea of telling a story where the girls are grown up and navigating adulthood is actually not a bad idea. It could be really interesting, just Powerpuff decided to try and do it in the WORST way possible. There are few kernels of good ideas here, the girls no longer being heroes, having moved on with their lives, maybe because superheroes just weren't needed anymore, Blossom working at a science lab, going to Miss Bellum for advice as she was one of the few female role models the girls had (I think just her and their teacher) and Buttercup having relationship/commitment issues are great ideas and have good potential for story and character arcs there.
But the making it edgy/gritty is where EVERYTHING falls apart. Just off the top of my head, some ideas as to how this could have been better:
    1. Instead of washed up child celebrity, Bubbles is still the happy, upbeat, person she was. Maybe working for some charity organization that helps animals, as loving the cute little critters was a big thing with her
    2. Professor should have been the 100% loving, caring, and supportive father he always was and its his birthday or something that brings the girls back home. Or, if you want to do something with a bit more mystery to it, he goes missing and the girls come home to find there dad.
    3. Sure the new mayor secretly being a villain works, I like that idea. Don't make him Mojo's son, make him a minion of Mojo, one who is being controlled from the shadows. Circle back to previous point, he is the one who kidnapped the professor, maybe to try and have him create new powered people loyal to Mojo, or to bring the girls back because of some other evil plot
    4. Make it animated! While I have no issue with a live action version in general, making it an animated series is better, as lets be honest, a live action Mojo, or Gangrene Gang, or Him, would would look kinda silly in live action.

But as stuff was trickling out in small bits I kind of found a lot of what they were saying about it really hard to believe becasue it was so dumb and going the complete wrong direction. Like the image of some people online described as their Party City type dresses. In my mind I assumed those weren't their official outfits becasue those were costumes they were wearing to a costume party or something. And their actual outfits would show up later in the episode and would make a little more sense and be better looking...at least in a CW sense of better.

This might lead to something far worse. An adultified Totally Spies. Since the shows both have similar heroes, an auburn haired leader and strategist (Blossom and Sam), a blonde haired girly girl (Bubbles and Clover), and a dark haired tomboy (Buttercup and Alex). Maybe replacing the Mojo character with Terrence and have him changed to a fellow scientist with his twin brother, Jerry, make the creator of the insects Mandy, and make Tim Scam the Republican mayor of Beverly Hills. And people say that Totally Spies was a fetish fuel show (A claim that's pretty dubious at best considering that most of the examples are just weird coincidences.), imagine a live action show based on it that actually has content that is completely unsuitable for children, has the characters become bastardized, and feels like a Ren & Simply Adult Party Cartoon style reboot of a mostly light-hearted show. I just hope that Warner Bros. doesn't attempt rework this dropped pilot into something like that.

But people don't watch Riverdale for the edgy update, they do it because you never know what wild bullshit (rocketeer cult leaders, serial killer genes, defeating the devil with a milkshake made with the tears of the Virgin Mary) the writers are gonna come up with next.

The MadTV sketches (from both the FOX and CN series) parodying the show was a much better take on the concept.

If ERod is looking for recommendations for future Legends of Fandom episodes, I suggest he go into detail on the originally planned sequels to Zack Snyder's Justice League. With The Flash now bringing the DCEU to a close this year, it seems like the ideal time to do it.

I think it's pretty safe to say the WGA and the SAG-AFTRA are going to kill this...I hope.

Tbh I'm glad this show is gone; because in this timeline we've got another powerpuff girls cartoon tv series being worked on by the creator himself!
No evidence on the series as of now beyond word of mouth, but it's far FAR more hopeful considering this live-action series is cancelled and the 2016 series won't be the last powerpuff girls series we see.
I'd be even more excited if dexter's lab joined in, but I get why genndy didn't want to make "yet another remake" of the show. Still I should count my blessings, a new powerpuff girls series! Plus a pre-school targetted foster's home! Oh and a new futurama series and Genndy made his "Unicorn : Warriors Eternal" so it's far better than the era of CNReel .
    *shivvers in disgust*

10:19 Was that a teaser of things to come? If not, we need more awful scripts like this to get the Blockbuster Buster out of retirement! :D

Also look at bubble's hair in the remake, like my god how do you screw up that bad, the show had a bible that addressed character design!
