The 2023 Honda HR-V EX-L Is A More Refined Civic Based Family SUV

  • With nearly 140,000 units sold in 2021, the #HondaHRV has been a pretty big success for #Honda. For 2023, the #HRV has been completely redesigned and its a whooping 8.7" longer versus the previous generation thanks to the new global compact architecture that also underpins the latest #HondaCivic. It also gets a new 2.0L VTEC engine under the hood, but sadly, no #HRVHybrid is available in the US, yet.

Happy Tuesday everyone! Hope you all had a wonderful holiday weekend. We'll be heading out to Detroit in about a week to see the new CR-V. Hopefully, Honda will show it with the turbo and hybrid powertrains we're expecting. The new HR-V is a great improvement but it just needs more power in our eyes :)

Huge shame they got rid of the magic seats. That was a huge selling point of the previous Fits and HR-Vs. We've had two second gen Fits and those seats are amazing. With this review, he absolutely hit the nail on the head - yes, the new HRV is a sharp-looking, much more refined and slightly larger vehicle that is unfortunately, severely underpowered, which in my opinion, ruins the entire driving experience. Moreover, and apparently a problem unique to Canada, where Honda has been price gouging Canadians for years (painfully evident when our loonie was on par with the greenback several years ago), pricing for this new HRV is crazy high so much so, to maintain the historical pricing spacing between it and its big brother, the more expensive CRV, we may very well see for the first time ever, a base model 2023 CRV starting in the $40's. And that would be ridiculous if that comes to fruition.

I don't understand the point of this car. The CR-V is just a bit more but you get better HP, mpg, and cargo room. They should have stayed with the Fit and polished that up. The FIT was an amazing second car or city car you can throw around. Honda risks cannibalizing themselves with this and the CRV

Also, I find it a little suspicious with how spacious that engine bay is… I know some countries have it launched with the hybrid powertrain but I don’t think it takes up THAT much space. With how it is right now, it is a direct competitor to the Corolla cross and Nissan Kicks(?) but everything else in this class offers more power, better or same fuel economy (with more power), and/or higher quality interiors. I love Honda products, but if Toyota gets rid of their subscription services on the Corolla Cross, I might get into one with a hybrid engine. The design language in the Corolla Cross is linear and the lines look nice. Hondas have a mix of curvy and straight that doesn't always fit together seamlessly. The body sculpting looks good on the 2023 HR-V. I only wish it had a stronger engine and the back seats weren't so economy.

The problem is that this is still about as slow,..and has less gas mileage. And I think Honda is making a HUGE mistake not putting the 1.5T in this.

After watching this....huge miss by Honda on this vehicle. Too many cut corners. Fine. Keep the 2.0L,...but include a hybrid motor with it to where this gets much better fuel economy. People who are buying in this price range would most likely be those who want to save on gas,....and this doesn't. And [at current point in time] with gas being ~$4.50/gl, the MPG ratings for this are abysmal.
No magic seat,....okay...more comfort. But no arm rest back there?
Fancy lights that most of the time won't get used,....but no USB ports of vents for the back seat?

I would guess you get about 1 second or more faster with the FWD, if you don't need the AWD. K-Tuner recently released a calibration fir the new Civic Sport with this engine that bumps it up to non Si 1.5L turbo engine horsepower and torque for about $300.
The Sport does not have paddle shifters. The major factor about offering different engines is that the HR-V is built in Mexico, so it will have to add all that equipment to the production line, and train the workers, especially they you offer a hybrid drive train, but I believe the US built 2023 Civic is offering the hybrid. I saw a video with and Aegean Blue Metallic Sport Hatchback with the hybrid engine.
I plan to get the HR-V Sport FWD, and may get the K-Tuner calibration. The 2.0L is way more dependable, reliable, with more longevity and less potential problems and maintenance of the turbo.
The Sport is the sweet spot for price and equipment, and I can upgrade the stereo amp and speakers with the money saved over the EX-L.

Like everyone else, I thought Honda had made a big mistake putting only a weak 2.0 liter naturally aspirated engine in this thing. Where is the 1.5 liter turbo I asked.
Well, I test drove one today. A front wheel drive Sport trim.
The speed is perfectly fine. I don’t know why Sofyan found it to be so slow. Maybe because the one he was driving was AWD? It’s not a difference in weight, because the Honda sales guy came along for the test drive and he was easily 6’4” and well over 200 pounds.
At urban/suburban speeds, the HRV felt quite reasonably peppy. Not fast, but not slow at all. It was only at highway speeds that the engine started running out of oomph a bit, but was still adequate.
I liked the HRV. The front seats were comfortable, everything was legible and easy to use and looked good. The rear seats had a lot of legroom, but I noticed that they were able to give it so much rear legroom by having the rear seats very low, so any tall rear passengers would have their knees pointing up. They really should have put rear vents and an armrest in the rear. The few dollars they saved by skipping those features are not worth it.
The only actual disappointment I had was with the cargo space. It’s barely adequate. 24.4 cubic feet is not much for an SUV. It’s equal to about 14 or 15 cubic feet in a sedan (because of the different methodologies in testing trunk space in sedans vs cargo space in SUVs). That’s not a lot.
But other than that, I really liked the HRV. It’s fun to drive, has very decent room for passengers, and is really intuitive and easy to drive.
I found myself not missing 1.5 liter turbo at all.
