Thank god for Fernco couplings. Redoing my shower and I have old cast iron pipes. Makes it way too easy to install a new drain with the coupling as the tie in.
Butt-saving information! Excellently presented too.
I didn't get a new kitcgen sink but I have a galvanized 1-1/2" nipple completely holed thru on the bottom by rust & corrosion just outside the hub. Getting it out was a battle but worse was how much of the threads had become one with the hub threads. Like there were NO fenale THREADS left in the bottom of the hub fitting.
Thank u for the perfect solution!
Hey I want to thank you for the vid, I found it very useful as I am doing plumbing right now, have a good day!
Great Video. What if the T was metal and had threads at the end for the 1.5" metal slip joint nut?
Refreshing 😊
Excellent excellent excellent video!!! “Thank U” I’m a 71 yo female who has never done anything plumbing related. My under kitchen sink area has sprung a leak. I don’t have $ to hire a plumber! I was taking it all apart, bought the pipes & fittings I’ll need but broke the pipe that comes out of the floor & into a larger fitting. I just bought a fitting like the one in ur video but didn’t know if I needed goop or tape to repair it. It didn’t come with any instructions lol so thanks again!!
Thanks you just saved me from calling a plumber
Im still struggling to understand what no hub means. Is the hub simply the pipe you want to connect to or from?
Can you use a rubber coupling in a pond? I need to go from a 1 1/2 barb on a 2600 GPH pump to a piece of same size DWV PVC Pipe that goes to the filter. Same at the pond filter, to bridge across a small gap between same size PVC. No problems with the coupling sliding on smooth PVC. I need to be able to easily disconnect at each end for maintenance.
Does anyone know how long these rubber couplings last?
Particularly when using them on old cast iron pipe to PVC.
There is no set time they will last but they have been used for decades in underground sewer applications.
Is the nut on the band particular size? Is it a quarter inch socket?
Saw these under the kitchen sink in the house I live in (I rent) it gave out and flooded the cabinets. Is this normal?
Is Rubber hub qualified plumbing code ?
@PlumbingPartsPro Does the work for metal pipes?
It doesnt work well on cast iron hubs due to the extra ring around the edge.
@@PlumbingPartsPro Thanks for the quick response!!!!
How long do those rubber couplings last? Do they deteriorate overtime? Is it a permanent fix?
They last a long time. It's hard to say forever because everything fails eventually. I would say semi permanent. 20 plus years
As a Pro I'm feeling resistant to use a coupling that goes over the hub. Feels like cheating. There has been scenarios where I definetly would use this when there's absolutely no practical way to remove the fitting and install new.
I agree. I would say this is an almost last resort. works well in situations where pvc has been sawed of under a sink and a Ram Bit saw is unavailable to cut the old pipe out you can place this over the hub.
I have a question. I am in the process of redoing a roman tub installation. The piping job was badly done, none of the connectors were cemented, causing water to seep out the plumbing and causing wood rott to the wood structure the tub was connected to. The issue I am having is the main drain line that connects to the tub drain needs to be at an angle, will these rubber connectors work to get the neccessary bend for the down drain line without having any leaks at the tub drain connecting point. The tub was raised above the floor, which makes the main drain line come up at an angle. I feel that a 20 maybe 30 degree angle is what I need for the down drain line to make secure connection.
I don't think I can get a 20 degree flex out of these
@@PlumbingPartsPro Thank you
Hello, do you have any suggestions on how to roll back the rubber on a 4" smooth stainless shielded coupling Proflex 3000-44 so I can connect 4 " cast iron to 4 ' pvc ? I am replacing a ancient backwater valve in my basement. The two materials have to be almost butted up against each other? I was going to use the e corrugated metal shielded coupling because it is easily rolled back on to the cast iron while I line the backwater valve up with castiron sewer line , but I was told by a plumber to use the smooth steel shield coupling. Thanks for any help
great job explaining this. It was exactly what I was looking for. I didnt know they made flex couplings to go over sockets.
Thank god for Fernco couplings. Redoing my shower and I have old cast iron pipes. Makes it way too easy to install a new drain with the coupling as the tie in.
Thanks for the information, do I need to apply silicon or any adhesive for these flexible parts? Thanks
Would adding sealant/dope reduce the likelihood of leaks or improve the long term reliability of mechanical coupling?
I just used one of these to connect to a brass kitchen drain pipe going into the floor. When i slid the rubber boot over the brass, I could see that there was a tiny gap in the outside diameter of brass where it met the rubber. I put a smooth bead of silicone and used my finger to fill the gap and angle it downward to promote good flow past the joint. Probably not necessary, but it won't hurt.
@PlumbingPartsPro does this work for ABS pipes? Alternatively, is there an ABS option?
would a 6 inch flex hose be long enough to heat up get a coupler in between 2 hard pipes that have no flex?? I currently have a rubber boot like your showing with clamps in between two hard pipes. Not sure if it will hold it's on a hot tub plumbing under high pressure
Nice video and good demonstration. But what I find these rubber couplings useful for is to make permanently accessible section of drain pipe which can be removed at will by just loosening the rubber coupling. There are troublesome section of pipe where it tends to clog badly and very hard to reach with snake, then having easy, direct access to that section of pipe solves lots of problems.
Good idea
Hello, wondering if u can help? i have old cast iron kitchen sink. the plastic that connects drain to the pipe cracked hard plastic that connects drainer to pipes, th strainer/drain isnt threaded, do u have anything i can use to connect the 2, thank you
Thank you so much for making this video! Best solution to cracks by the hub!
Great video, it's amazing that of all the information on the net and TH-cam, I couldn't get a simple explanation of a 'hub' coupling. Many definitions of 'no hub' just not 'hub'.
Im wondering... Can i use it underground ? If so how long would it last? Ive never used one of those before
I have that on my drain pipes and can’t get it off! Any tricks you know to help me loosen it so I can snake my clogged pipe
Can I do same thing on cast iron pipe vertical situation?
But what about a tub to shower MOD? Going from 1.5 to 2 inch drain. All that is left is a .75 to 1 inch nub on the main drain line to connect to. Can you use this rubber coupling to transition to the 2 inch drain line from the leftover nub without having to chop out the main drain tee and install a new one with a 2 inch to connect to?
Exactly what I was looking for. Thank you.
Very good. Work. Sir
So if I were to use this for a snorkel on a ATV will the seal hold up under water?
I cannot find a rubber coupling that will fit 2 3/4 in Galvanized elbow a little bit sticking out of the wall. I only find 2 inch to 1 1/2 inch reducer.
Call fernco customer service
don't see link for the coupling
Do you recommend to use pvc cement to glue this?
Suage pipe that's what I did
How long do those rubber couplings last?
This was extremely helpful because I thought my plumber was crazy because there’s a large gap in the piping that he covered with that rubber coupling, so I was like WTW is he doing 😂😂😂
does it work on brass drain lines?
Thank-you what glue should one use to plastic to copper
I am not sure what you are asking? You don't glue plastic to copper
@@PlumbingPartsPro
Couple years ago a plumber connected my pipe downstairs which is copper to an plastic pipe it worked but now many years later is leaking would gorrala glue applied fix the leak thanks
@@teddyboy252 I would not recommend that. Email us a picture at info@plumbingpartspro.com and we can help
Thanks
Very helpful info. Thank you! A demonstration of using a ram bit would be nice. Have a good day!
Good idea. Subscribe and I will try to do one.
Anyone have a link? Can’t find it.
❤❤❤❤
Thanks Sir, that was very helpful. Will certainly look out for one of those connectors. Was never 💯 certain about connecting over a hub , but it appears that that is precisely what those connectors are made for, situations just how you explain it , and the exact situation I was in dealing with a sink drain pipe connection, thanks again, just out of curiosity, are you a licensed plumber, and or do you have any information about CSST pipe tubing , I am interested in changing over from black pipes to CSST , but am not sure If I can use the same exact size of the pipe diameter that is in current use??
Yes, CSST works well however you have to strap it pretty well or it looks like a sloppy job. Also make sure you use the "Flash Shield" it's the BLACK CSST. This version is bonded and safer. There have been some lighting strikes and attacks the yellow an puts pinholes in the yellow. The sizing is extremely close as far as the BTU load. If your not adding a fixture the same sizing should be fine
@@PlumbingPartsPro thank you very much! Appreciate it!
will it work on a outdoor connection, like extending a vent on a roof?
Sure it will
@@PlumbingPartsPro thank you
Thanks
Does the old pipe create a edge that might catch toilet paper etc?
Not typically if the band fits all the way in against the hub
and these can be burried?
Yes you are supposed to only use these because they have less metal to rust and corrode compared to a no hub coupling
Does this past plumbing code?
This should work in most plumbing drainage applications, however check with you local building code official. I have had some inspectors approve items in one city and an inspector in a city 3 miles away fail something. This is an item usually used in a repair application not new construction so an inspection is typically not needed.
@@PlumbingPartsPro Got it. Have you used a Fernco to connect drain pipes (go from PVC from tailpipe and trap to ABS drain pipe) under bathroom sinks. I ask because I have ABS drain pipe and have to replace the vanity and it's hard finding ABS parts. I will be selling the house.
Yes, ABS has been more difficult to find. This will fit over ABS hubs just fine but will only reduce to a pipe size. So an 1 1/2 hub with a fitting pvc trap adapter would probably work nicely
@@PlumbingPartsPro Thanks
@@PlumbingPartsPro Sorry. I may not have been clear with my question. The pvc and abs pipes have no hubs, just straight pipe that needs to be joined to complete the drain connection under the bathroom sink. It is my understanding that PVC and ABS can only be joined via mechanical joints. Thoughts on using the fernco to join the different pipes. Will this have an affect on selling the house? Thanks
Great video! Is there a version of a Fernco coupling that will slip inside a hub fitting (as opposed to sliding over it)?
amzn.to/3KvHRpe. They make these in various sizes, usually goes inside a cast iron hub
Can I use the rubber under a house where it won't be accessible again?
Some area codes are different but I have seen people do it all the time
@@PlumbingPartsPro I am DIY, no inspection. I appreciate 🙏 you.
