  • Does Cathay Pacific still have a large part of its fleet grounded, or has it been able to recover through the years? What's the future outlook of the company as well? Today, I explore the company which has experienced some of the toughest times in recent years.

Done a lot of flying on Cathay Pacific in the past, but not since 2018, mostly flew on the A330-300s, but occasionally B777-300s, twice on the A350-900s and once on a B747-400 (when they were still in service). They have the best inflight entertainment options, even in economy class.

I recently flew on a new Cathay Pacific A321 and the experience was nothing short of fantastic all-around, beautiful interior, great food and service, good staff, nothing to complain about at all. The A330s I've been on are very noticeably older and in need of some upgrading, it doesn't feel like such a premium airline when on their old A330s. It will be very cool to finally see some 777-9s in their fleet!

I flew on Cathay Pacific with the A350-900 and -1000 recently and the layout of the -1000 was so much better. The -900 we flew was quite old looking and the layout was cramped. We also flew one of the 777's which suffered a APU failure on the tarmac causing a 2 hour delay, before we were eventually able to take off in the same plane. The 777's age was very evident.

While not launch customers, they signed up to 77W early-ish. Also most of their 773s are built in the late 90s.

I recently flew on the -900 and the -1000 with Cathay and honestly both aircraft were pretty good. The -1000 was superior in terms of seat comfort, but the -900 is still a fantastic aircraft with a comfortable and, in my opinion, modern layout. I also flew on the 777-300ER and also found that to be a nice aircraft, although the seats are not as comfortable as they are narrower than on their a350s, but I also found that I couldn't tell the age of the aircraft too much, although these were some of their youngest 77Ws at 9 years old on average.

CX as the flagship carrier of HK got a good part of their business with HK being an aviation hub of Asia. That's exactly why I have doubt on it's recovery because 1) With the ban over Russia, flying from HK to Europe, particularly Northern Europe is no longer cost effective compared to connecting via SE Asia like Singapore. With the economic downturn in China as well as the political situation, there's large decline for travel in and out of China. 3) The airport fee and charges are not cheap at all. With the airport tax, security fee and the airport construction charge, it adds up to HK$310 each way, HK$620 = USD70 for return. While transit via Taipei is USD16 each way. Where as for Changi, transit pax only needs to pay SGD9 ~ USD 7 each way. For Kansai, it's 880yen~USD6 each way.

It always amazes me to hear that the a350-1000 is a 4.5 year old plane...specially when taking into consideration that the - still to be certified - 777-9 (aka 777x programme) was meant to compete with the a350-900...

Chinese occupied Hong Kong has no economy, no real rule of law, no freedom, no growth, no future and no hope. Being based in Hong Kong means that nobody wants to go to their Hub as a destination and long range mid-size planes like the 787 and A350 enabling long range direct flights means that the transit business is going down the tube. With the ChiCom airlines more than happy to eat Cathay's lunch in the Gateway to China segment and the implosion of China's own economy means that this is also a dying business. Cathay is done as a major airline like Hong Kong is done as a business center. It may be around a while yet, but it'll never be profitable at the size it is currently at.
