  • Based on data from Planespotters.net, Cathay Pacific has a total of 170 aircraft in its fleet at the time of this video’s production. However, if we exclude the carrier’s full, cargo-only freighters, then that number goes down to 150.

    To put it simply, CPA has been in an extreme stream of bad luck since they lost $500m from fuel shorting gamble and got removed from Hang Sang Index in 2016. The whole tragedy would even make Pan Am feel much better and film worthy. I still like the airline very much so I hope it recovers soon

    My first flight with Cathay was about ten years ago on a trip to Japan on transit at HKG, crews were fantastic, with smiles and delicious food served throughout my flight. I told them I was stuffed on previous flight prior transit at HKG yet they're pleased to serve fruit platters and deserts from first class when I'm ready. The only thing I disliked about Cathay is the hard shell seats in economy. Any CX frequent flyers back in 2000's mustn't forgot those un-reclinable seats which doesn't fit the image of premium carrier until they removed those seats in 2015 I think.

    • @chm0225

      Those seats are awful, but luckily, I think many of them are being switched to newer, reclinable seats

    As an AVGeek we had specifically booked a Hong Kong to Bankkok route to try the then new Cath Pac A350 but got downgraded to both economy and an old 777 - very old but the service was nice, and the £560 refund went down a treat :). Also you can't beat the Cath Pac lounges :)

    I have an aunt who lives in Hong Kong, so I’ve travelled there at least 15 times, but only finally broke the Cathay duck in 2019, flying their A350-1000. Their hard product offering is okay, nothing special about their seats, crew was great though. Also, my flight was a red-eye, so I got this lovely snack box, with a delicious sandwich and fruits inside. The last few years have made me feel so sorry for them. Hong Kong did well to contain COVID for the whole of 2020 and into 2021, but were incompetently unprepared for Omicron and being at the mercy of Mr Xi’s administration, I fear they’ll be one of the last countries to open up to the extent western countries and Asian neighbours have.
    That’s a shame because I have a special attachment to Hong Kong, Chep Lap Kok is my favourite airport in the world and Cathay themselves were on a recovery plan from like 2017 onwards, after suffering heavy losses in the pass few years. Glad to see the borders easing every so slightly as because the situation 6 months ago was bleak at best.

    With regret, I have just cancelled my forthcoming trip on Cathay, which involves transit in Hong Kong. It would be very inconvenient if I have further flight cancellations, so I have now booked other flights which do not transit HKG. It costs more, but I don't want the stress of last-minute changes. I hope conditions improve for Cathay.

    Cathay did it to themselves. I used to be a loyal Cathay-only flyer. Been their Diamond status flyer for 10 years. But they kept cutting benefits, and made it known they don't appreciate you. They had monopoly in HK and they believed themselves to be invincible. C-D was bad, but they did it to themselves long before that.

    • @sergiolaurencio7534
      @sergiolaurencio7534 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      probably they will order the 330neo, for its dangerous situation, having a new aircraft that is more familiar would be the better choice in my opinion. Of curse, the 787 training is almost the same as the 777. So is not that hard to familiarise with, but that would depend on the Airlines. The most important is getting out of the situation.

      For short haul flights they might actually be an okay option? But given by the rise in oil prices you might be right. As a customer I like the 2-4-2 layout though as it is easier to access the aisle compared to 3-3-3 or 3-4-3 but I also love the 350

    Cathay Pacific, the proud of Hongkonger back in the 80s,90s and 2000s. But it is failing just like its city. It's sad to see this internationally regonized brand is going wrong. But there is a momentum that want it to disappear that is out of our control.

    • @vitasoy1437
      @vitasoy1437 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's sad that some believe CX kowtow to Beijing and boycott it or even just want it to be gone. I think it tried to stay as neutral as possible with its position. If it's gone, then HK will just have Chinese national carriers to take over. It will be a loss for HKers. Now thinking back, the steps it took towards its crew in 2020 and its vaccine policies seem to match with carriers internationally. It's the local COVID policies that are the bigger issue and the blame game towards its crew causing an outbreak is pretty stupid, especially when the world is opening up (almost fully by now).

    Cathay Pacific needs serious restructuring asap . . . the legacy full service carrier needs to consolidate it's equity layout & it's fleet . . . Cathay Pacific should replace it's aging fleet of B777-300 & A330-300 with brand new A350-900 ULR & A350-1000 HGW variants . . . a fleet of 18 second hand B777-300 ER (subject to availability) could do as well but will require complete refurbishment of the airframes . . . suspend some of the airline's not much profitable routes temporarily ofcourse . . . hate to say, but a proper consolidation will include significant job cuts as well in order to sustain through the lows . . .

      If u have been to or seen video of the nearly deserted terminal @ CX's HKG hub lately at anytime of the day, u will understand their narrowbody 321 fleet is actually helping CX to survive financially. Current pax traffic volume is below 20% of the level CX had right b4 covid and even back then in 2019, traffic wasn't great to begin with by CX historic standard thx to the infamous political upheaveals in HK.
      CX is really lucky to hv decided to "bother to have narrowbody" 5yrs ago, well b4 the serious downturns in traffic to, from and connect @ HKG.
