- Aphrodite is the Greek goddess of love, beauty, pleasure, and procreation. Her Roman equivalent is the goddess Venus. According to Hesiod's Theogony, she was born when Cronus cut off Uranus's genitals and threw them into the sea, and she arose from the sea foam. Because of her beauty, other gods feared that their rivalry over her would interrupt the peace among them and lead to war, so Zeus married her to Hephaestus, who, because of his ugliness and deformity, was not seen as a threat. Aphrodite had many lovers-both gods, such as Ares, and men, such as Anchises. She played a role in the Eros and Psyche legend, and later was both Adonis's lover and his surrogate mother. Many lesser beings were said to be children of Aphrodite.

In the 8th book of the Odyssey, She has an affair with Ares. This choice of a war god for a partner is interesting. The other gods thought Ares a brute and disliked him, but Aphrodite loved him. Their affair was spotted by Helios, who informed Hephaestus. He made a net so fine it was almost invisible and set a trap for them. The next time they coupled he sprung the trap, and then called all the gods to witness. Instead of blaming Aphrodite, they expressed their desire for her. Hephaestus began to moan and whine about how awful his lot was, which made him a laughing stock. Freed, Aphrodite went on to have other affairs.
In Greek society this would have resulted in instant divorce. But it didn't, and Aphrodite accrued no shame. She was simply doing her sole divine duty, which was to copulate.
