I'm going deep into First Markham Place to try out the famous Ding Tai Fung, Chinese BBQ, but I'm also talking to the locals about the Chinese community in Toronto. From noodles, to Hong Kong Style Milk Tea, to amazing Xiaolongbao, I'm trying the best Toronto Chinese Food there is.
Toronto is home to the second largest Chinese community in North America, and is also home to the 8 distinct Chinese cooking styles. I can't wait to show you these Toronto Chinese Food gems, lets go!

My son is a paramedic in Toronto but, he lived in China for six years. When he misses the food he goes to Markham! There are so many places there that have excellent Chinese food from many different provinces. Pro Tip if you are learning Mandarin or speak it as a learned language and want to keep up or practice? Go to Markham.
My cat Mr Felix likes to eat in Markham.
As a white guy who loves authentic Asian food. Markham is the way.
@@kyleg334 People think Markham is bland but, there are a lot of great places to eat there!
I Love the Chinese food in Markham and Toronto and I am Jamaican but it's great to taste different types of Food since Toronto is such a big multicultural City
15:21 This little shop was great. Her daughter taking over to answer lots of questions was awesome!
I feel like you get more genuine answers from younger Chinese people, who are more integrated.
Toronto Chinese Food>NYC Chinese Food any day
24/7
Toronto is authentic Chinese food. NYC is domesticated Chinese food. That's why Americans love The Mandarin Chinese buffet when they come up here 😂.
First Markham Place? And you know about the 2 bbq places? You a real one David!
I’m Chinese Canadian, born and raised in Toronto, then Scarborough and now resident of Markham. My late maternal grandfather immigrated from Guangzhou to Montreal in 1918, over 106 years ago!
Been to Ding Tai Fung and didn’t like it at all. I found their xiaolongbao skin/wrapper as well as their other dumplings were way too thick. Also had the food at Gol’s Lanzhou Noodle. The texture of the noodles were too chewy and not springy/bouncy. We ordered 2 kinds of noodles and they were both terrible. I do love and recommend the food at Green Tea Restaurant though (you passed by but didn’t go in to try their food).
As for Hong Kong milk tea, I’ve tried many all over the GTA and so far, nothing closely compares to the award-winning one at Marathon Cafe (4 locations). Highly recommend it there.
There’s also tons of Chinese restaurants in Richmond Hill, Ontario, on or near Hwy 7, west of Hwy 404. First Markham Place offers just a ‘handful’ of choices. The GTA has a number of great dim sum places and many restaurants that offer great Peking duck. Our family’s go-to dim sum restaurant is The ONE Fusion Cuisine. To answer your question, Hwy 7 is not a highway (it was a provincial highway in the 1920s). It is actually a major road that stretches across several regions.
Yes!!!!! We 100% agree with what you said! And the best way to hold chopsticks is to hold it in the UPPER 3rd part of the chopsticks ... the higher the better to avoid hand cramping and we grew up being told you will live longer if you hold your chopsticks higher up. And please use a spoon in the other hand if you eat rice on a plate with chopsticks.
Din Tai Feng never officially opened in Canada. What you experienced is most definitely a bootleg Din Tai Feng.
Hey David, I just want to say: Thank you for visiting the GTA and making such great videos about the diversity of our cultures, food & enjoying what this country has to offer. Come by Mississauga and we will show you a whole new dynamic of what we have to offer . Much ❤ from Port Credit & Cooksville ON! Also a big shoutout to Jamaica ~ Happy Independence day! Wah Gwaan!
Dude you chose the right BBQ winner. The Yellow one on the right is the clear local winner. The one left of it gets the overflow.
The HK Cafe is my favourite fusion of HK Style cafe food. Too bad they were closing but you gotta go back for their Haikanese Chicken, also their Pineapple bun sandwich with fried Chicken & Avocado.
Been there a few times. I'm happy you got to go there David. So much to explore and taste. Love it 💕💕
thank you so much Ingrid! Truly grateful for your support. Hope you have a beautiful week and it was so delicious. Great to see you too.
I'm in the western GTA. Born and raised in Etobicoke and moved to Mississauga not far from where Harlan (Col.) Sanders lived from 1965-80. We rarely go east of Yonge St.
use soup spoon, then poke the top , add the salty vinegar / soy sauce , i stir and have broth first then the dumpling
the way he ate the xio lon bao made me so sad man
Same. I’m Indian Canadian and it made me sad to watch all that beautiful soup drip out when he bit it in the side. Been to Ding Tai Fung many times.
My wife's hangout. Those 2 bbq places always had a lineup, and it switches between the 2. But I go for pho. My wife goes for Fusion for Hong Kong teahouse items.
Ok, a little bit of history. Downtown Chinatown was originally behind where city hall is. I think the community vacated (around the time the City Hall was being built) and mixed up with the Jewish community of Kensington market, where downtown Chinatown sits. As those generations got more money, they moved more east. Some settled in East Chinatown (Broadview and Gerrard area), and into North Scarborough, and the rich took up residence in Markham and Richmond Hill. This process happened over the course of at least a good 80 years. My maternal grandfather was a cook for Lychee Gardens, one of the first high class Chinese restaurants in the city located in Old Chinatown, back in the 50s. My paternal grandparents were more based in Scarborough, and moved more out to Markham and Richmond Hill.
You are exactly right. I came here as a student in the early 1980s, when downtown Chinatown was the main place to get anything Chinese, and to a lesser extent around the Broadview area. Towards the end of my education, Chinese restaurants in Scarborough just started to get popular. When I finally immigrated to Canada in the mid 90s, Richmond Hill first then Markham became the go-to neighborhood for Cantonese Chinese (mainly from Hong Kong and also from Guangzhou). This has continued up to this time.
You’re going to make me go there today 😭
You've gotta try Great Fountain Fast Food! HK style.
Pacific Mall is a good place to walk around.
A bunch of food spots all along Midland Ave from Finch Ave E up to McNicoll Ave.
I agree! Love Great Fountain food!
Will you visit Pacific Mall too? Like this place too.
And when you do caribbean food I hope you stop by Chadon beni and Drupaties ( i love their doubles )for Trinidadian food. And visit Old Bahamas where Keith Lee went.
And visit the Latina Plaza for Latin food.
Can you please put the Link to the song that's played in the introduction of this video, in the description? I really like the song
With Markham and FMP, you are just scratching the surface when it comes to the GTA Chinese community and food. As Chinese Americans from New England, my family and I have been visited the GTA for over 4 decades and have seen the migration and expansion of the Chinese community from Spadina/Dunda Chinatown to Scarborough, Markham, Richmond Hills, and now Aurora and northward. There are hundreds of Chinese restaurants bounded by Sheppard Ave , MaCowan Road, Major MacKenzie, and Bayview Ave. For Cantonese food, the GTA food scene is much better than what is available here in the States.
Dev is only a self proclaimed chef.
Chinese foods ....one of my all-time favorite ...fried rice....noodles....stir/fry veges....fried chicken....just the best!!!.....I'm taking a note of the restaurants so when I visit Toronto will know where to dine.... beautiful as always...Thanks David safe travels....Peace and Blessings.
What was the song at very end. Tried SHAZAMing it but nada. Anyone…??????
Loved the lady at the Study & Immigration centre - Did anyone notice at 37:07 - '' Congratuations' on the certificates and also at 37:18 - No L in it?
There are a lot of good places for Chinese food in Toronto and the surrounding area (Mississauga, Markham, Richmond Hill, Scarborough, Newmarket). Try Vancouver and surrounding cities like Richmond and Burnaby.
Crazy to see markham being covered like this... I go here a lot so its nice to see some love!
Thank you for sharing the food passion for all different cultures❤😊
David. That Chinese lady is soooooo nice they where she speck .she in the right place.
Ayeee bro you got them views back up!!! Keep it up
have you ever been to vancouver?. that's the real deal for chinese food and sushi.
i was surprise by the title too
my favourite food court in Markham, go there all the time when i used to work around there. love this BBQ place. Same people since 2001.
Love your openmindedness man. Not everyone from Florida is like this
Nice!!!!!! Food looks good, friendly service and nice vendors.
This video was amazing showed me some top places to try. Much better than Chef Dev talking and being bias bout West Indian Caribbean food. Thx for coming to Toronto
🤣🤣…exactly.., that guy was pushing his own preferences/likes and not letting David make up his own mind.
Markham is LITERALLY a separate city from Toronto. All you gotta do is ask who the mayor is, and get a different answer between Toronto and Markham. Markham is a city of 400,000 people, about population of Buffalo, NY… except 2/3rds of the population is Chinese.
I did some business in NYC. I heard the best soup filled dumplings were in NYC. One of the guys from NYC said you have to try them in NYC. I told him I'm from Markham and soup filled dumplings is my favorite comfort food. He said you are from Markham? Dont waste your time in NYC for dumplings. Markham has way better dumplings than NYC.
yup this guy knows what he's talking about
soak the mushroom in wine/beer then fry or use in veggie lasagna
I am so hungry after watching this😋
Ding Tai Fung at First Markham Place is not related to the international famous Din Tai Fung. They copied the name and are not affiliated.
the dried fish is used for soup base, go to a hot pot/shabu shabu, many iin nyc
I live in Uxbridge, ON which is NE of Markham. I commuted to and lived/worked in Markham for many years. Love the Chinese culture and they're very respectful of the Canadian culture.
I'd love to see you do a tour of Brampton, ON and your opinion of the Indian culture of food.
You have a thriving TH-cam channel, would love to get your opinion. Much Love
The lady was very generous with the portion for only $10 US ❤
Great episode thank you for the video Mr Hoffmann ✅ byebye
That girl Wendy (young girl who works with her mother) said that Scarborough is poor and full of old people, really? There are endless primary and secondary schools in Scarborough. The houses all cost over a million.
You make me crave roasted pork and roasted duck now at 11 pm. Maybe I’ll go get some from FMP tomorrow. 😍
Great bbq places. Try hot pot in Markham too. Mmmm so good
Beside Toronto, NY or San Francisco, Richmond BC is another mega Chinese food destination…
I worked for Charlie’s Meats the main meat supplier for the Asian restaurants in Toronto, you visited all my old customers
Extra BBQ in FMP is the best, that couple gave me generous lunches everyday and their duck is the Best
Wish I knew you were coming to town I would have shown you the top spots
This made me miss the NY Chinatown.
the corner steamed bun place has the best XLB and Shengjian bao. you missed out not taking her recommendation!
how about the this one 3833 Midland Ave Scarborough, ON M1V 5L6? or 165-15 beaver creek richmond hill go to find it by JC说媒 我能美妆博主?
need this in my life right now, good lord that Chinese food looks incredible.
We love your video ❤ and Food so Delicious 😋 ❤ and Yes Please make Food Mukbang with Xiaomanyc and Food Ranger. In the future. We love you. Xiaomanyc. Food Ranger together
btw that Ding Tai Fung you went there was a fake. The real one is called Din (no "g") Tai Fung but we don't have the real one in Toronto. I heard Vancouver might be be getting the real one soon.
this 'famous ding tai fung' is not the same as the chain in the states. It's only by name.
Back in 97 there was a Chinese buffet in the Eaton Centre, the food was absolutely delicious, does anyone recall the brand name and if they are still in business in Toronto
Abacus
of so many Chinese restaurants in Toronto, you picked a food court
David you look very handsome with your bald head and beard 👌🏼
Bro--i so need to teach you the ways. All those places are so mid--but i love your enthusiasm
She gipped you with the American $ conversion😭😩 $20 USD is close to $30 CAD lol

They have the best BBQ in GTA!
I guess we can call Toronto and VA, the twain sisters (title) of the "Best Chinese Food Capitals" of Canada.
That mall opens until late
Where in Toronto was this?
This is not Toronto lol. Misleading title. Even Pacific Mall is north of Steeles so technically Markham.
Hwy 7 and Woodbine
我也是喜欢吃香港
❤
Davidsbeenhere 👍👍.....frm shillong meghalaya
Those prices in Markham were ridiculously cheap.
Nice video 👍💯♥️Fyi - A lot of Asian will get upset if you think they are from China
Toronto has way better chinese food then New York. the best in north america . the only competition prolly is vancouver
Hey David, let me take you to the best Filipino restaurant in Toronto

Filipino food is gross ro be honest. The culture, the people , is just not good to look at it
How long are you in Toronto for???
Markham has the best Chinese food
Btw, USD = $ 1.38
How about the ethics of groups' cultures and Chinese fairy tales going to Tobermory islands? how about the mermaids or Chinese dragon souls. hahahha very funny Canadian.
Haha did the Chinese lady just give him 1:1 for USD?
Toronto Chinatown is getting gentrified, it isn't the same anymore.

Vancouver is Chinese capital of Canada!
Richmond, BC is the legitimate Chinese capital of Canada.
Vancouver sleeps at 8 , dead. It isn’t comparable to GTA food wise .
Hi
Cute 🧸
Whaat?? Really? sorry yall lol Vancouver is the place to be when i comes to Chinese food. lol
DAvid
抱歉,我不喜欢中国的食物,我宁愿吃西方的美食!😃
Pacific mall,what's wrong with you? 5 Chinatowns,not 4.
May be 7 dollar
I need some money
Actually, Vancouver has the largest China Town in Canada.
Chinatown restaurant's price is way more expensive then Markham. you get better food better price and service in Markham . i boycotted chinese restaurant in chinatown longtime ago lol , its a rip-off .
Vancouver's Chinatown is dying now compared to 2006.
did he go to that overrated shithole that does the seafood tower for like $600 ?
that seafood place in markham reminds me of anchor bar in buffalo, steering the naive customer gravy train all the way
😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
With your bald head and beard you kinda look like Joel bane a guy who teaches catch wrestling ( the ancestor of freestyle wrestling and pro wrestling).
Markham is NOT Toronto.
Same crap
Markham is part of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). I live in Markham, and when I tell people outside of Ontario (the province) where I’m from, I’d say I’m from Toronto.
i know this one hahahah
