    From a musician's perspective, the difference between Channing and Grohl is that while Chad came up with many drum parts that really define a lot of early Nirvana tunes, he didn't have quite the technique needed to make them great. His sense of time is all over the place; his arms rush the beat while his foot can't stay in time. Grohl knew how to make it swing, and his time is right on the money. If you listen to live recordings from the Chad era, by the end of sets he sounds very tired and keeps slowing down, whereas Grohl kept great time all night long. You can give Chad a lot of credit for coming up with the syncopation and the parts that define the songs on Nevermind, but Grohl plays Chad's parts with much more accomplished technique. Another good example is "School." Listen to the Bleach version (Chad), which is a great drum part that defines the tune. But then listen to live versions of Grohl playing Chad's part -- he makes it swing and his time is better. He also hits a lot harder.

    • @GothicXlightning
      @GothicXlightning 4 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      i don't know mate
      honestly i feel that chad had some decent techniques about him that made him a different drummer than Grohl
      not saying he is danny carey or matt cameron godly level
      but he was a decent drummer

    • @mwhite6522
      @mwhite6522 4 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      @@GothicXlightning He was decent enough, and the drum *parts* that he came up with really define the songs in a lot of ways; he just doesn't have as good chops as Grohl. The most obvious thing is his time. It's all over the place. The other thing I notice is he hits the snare ahead of the beat but the kick drum is usually behind the beat, so there's this kind of sneakers-in-a-dryer sound to his playing sometimes - I think it's most obvious on the studio version of "Blew" on Bleach. Grohl has said many times he's just playing Chad's parts on Nevermind, which he learned off the demos. He's just got better technique and can hit the drums generally better than Chad.

    • @will4486
      @will4486 4 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      M White yes exactly. Thanks for putting words to this; there are so many people that are weirdly defensive of Chad on here it’s just like: it’s ok if you like him but he’s objectively sloppier and plays with less charisma than Dave. The whole band is sooo much tighter with Dave playing

    • @TestMeatDollSteak
      @TestMeatDollSteak 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      That’s funny, because in Everett True’s Nirvana biography, Steve Turner and Matt Lukin from Mudhoney say they preferred Chad’s drumming to Dave’s in Nirvana because Chad “had more swing”, whereas Dave’s style was more aggressive.

    It's good to see so many people giving Chad the credit due. It's hard for many drummers to get recognition, especially when the album you record with the band who breaks out on a different album later on. For years I thought my influence as a drummer was only from Grohl in terms of Nirvana(or at least primarily in knowing Chad was on Bleach) and it wasn't til later I realized the influence I got was more from Chad than I had known when for example, realizing he had wrote much of the drum music for Nirvana. So THANK YOU CHAD for your influence. You've impacted me and my style. In my bands music, there are definitely some hints of Chad as well as Grohl of course, that can be heard in my drumming. Hats off to you Chad!

    I really loved Bleach, it was a completely different kind of album than what they'd put out later, but a big part of Nirvana history. The fact that Chad wasn't included is just stupid, but as many other commenters have pointed out, the r&r hall of fame is just pretty terrible and disrespectful even to the main inductees, their band mates, and the families who would like to see their dads or relatives get inducted. $10,000 a ticket ! Kurt wanted to make it big and Vig said this is what you need to do. I dont think Kurt knew it was going to get as big as it did and then thought this shit is not worth it. Yes. In all honesty the public persona of Kurt Cobain is just another media product. He liked to whine but he was kind of a jerk but one of those people who hide it well. There is a lot of shit that happened that we will never know about like for example Krist not comming to his wedding. His best friend he knew from childhood There was shit going on that we will never know about. I bet if he lived in this era with cameras and recordings everywhere - would know a very different Kurt.
      All we know is from few recordings Kurt being this likeable weirdo (pre Nevermind) or likeable stoner (after Nevermind) before the cameras. But make no mistake he was acutely aware the camera were rolling.
      Im not saying anything but also I highly susspect he was that good of a person. In those days lots of shit went behind closed doors. Especially him being around shady people with drugs and everything. not much is know about his drug dealers etc.
      We practically dont know much about Kurt when I think about it. All we have are some interviews, people's accounts some short video clips to judge.
      All we have is accounts of others in front of the camera which mean jack shit.
      I think he was very unfair to some people like his father but then again when I think about it he died at 27. He never even got to mature as a human being... Its sad at the end that's what it is.

      You may be right -- some accounts I've read said that when Nevermind was at its peak and they were touring and making bank, Kurt wanted to fire Dave Grohl for playing "too heavy metal" or something.
      There are also many stories of Nirvana gigs when they were just starting to hit it big but were still booked in clubs. I can't tell you how many eyewitness accounts I've heard about what a total asshole Kurt was, throwing tantrums and acting like a complete jerk to everyone at clubs. There's video of the Texas club gig where Kurt hit the security man in the head with his guitar, and the guy responded by punching Kurt, which stopped the show for about 30 minutes. The whole show is on video and Kurt is acting like a spoiled brat for most of it. He seems absolutely insufferable. Others who knew him said his worst quality was his self-pity in the face of massive success, which he sabotaged every chance he got, by showing up to gigs wasted, trashing gear, and just being miserable to everyone.

    John Lennon once said that he didn't care about the drumming. At the end of the day a drummer has to play according to what the writer of the song wants . That makes a drummer easy to fire, of course unless the drummer learns from Ringo, you know he would clown around for the band .

    Kurt Cobain’s greatest gift was creating the appearance of being oblivious to the genius elements of Nirvana. That way it comes off very happenstance when the actuality was that he carefully curated all elements of Nirvana’s appeal. No better example of this is made than bringing Dave Grohl on as a replacement for Chad. Dave’s professionalism and metronomic precision allowed for Kurt and Krist to experiment and sit sonically on top of Dave’s hard hitting, in time foundation.

    The thing that's weird is if you look at the performances from the time, Kurt overall seemed happier playing with Chad than he did Dave. Chad's style might not have been as good for some of the songs on Nevermind though, like if you listen to his version of Stay Away which was called Pay to Play at the time the drumming isn't nearly as powerful as Dave's. But overall I think he may have been more fun to play with b/c on songs like School he played slower & didn't rush through as much as Dave did, and had sort of more of a groove to his drumming.
    Chad will always be a significant part of Nirvana's history and body of work though. I reject the narrative that everything before Nevermind is less significant because "that's when they hit it big." Nirvana only had 3 major album releases & Bleach is one of them & possibly my favorite. So Chad is the drummer on a third of Nirvana's albums.
