Chad gets a bad rap, imo. He’s a perfectly fine drummer, for your average band. If I was putting a band together, and the guy came in who played like Chad, I would be happy with it. 1990 Chad with Nirvana was pretty good imo. But Nirvana was not your average band. They went to the absolute top. Plus Chad was sandwiched between two drumming titans, Dale Crover and Dave Grohl. Chad was never going to shape up.
Been reading through the comments and people have their favorites. Of course Chad is amazing and Dave is one best already - but maybe aside from the skill, Im sure it has something to do with personalities too. Maybe Kurt and Krist just have a better rapport with Dave. They get along better- so yeah maybe Dave made them feel complete.
My older sisters husband's brother told me about nirvana and pearl jam when we were in highschool. He also introduce me to the show seinfeld. Stuff our families frowned on.
chad genuinely seems like a lovely guy, would suck to have to fire him, and then to publicly forget his next bands name on film. would make one feel really guilty i think
Anyone else on here like the much harder sound of Bleach over anything the band would produce afterwards? I certainly do! In fact, the only original album I own of Nirvana, from back then, is that Bleach album on Vinyl.
Nirvana needed a propulsive drummer and that's where Bonham-inspired Dave Grohl came in. Chad was no slouch at all when it came to coming up with creative drumlines but I think it's obvious to anyone who listened he was more following the song than leading it and in most bands the drummer needs to lead. Drummers got replaced for not being in the pocket in Sonic Youth, Sleater-Kinney, and The Clash. Kurt was on the phone with Butch Vig absolutely raving about Dave, calling him the best drummer in the world. I don't think that's much of an overstatement.
I love the Bleach album, but I did call it, rock'n roll cha, cha, cha. It worked perfectly for bleach (one of my favorite albums of all time) but would never have worked for the songs on Nevermind.
@@jeffreyval9665 I am a firm believer that as go the drums so goes the band. If you have a mellow drummer you will have a mellow band, and you can't have a versatile band without a versatile drummer. As for real life examples... The police would not have had the Police sound without Steward Copland and Led Zepplin would not have had that Zepplin sound without John Bonham. While the Nevermind songs may have been written when Chad was in the band, Nevermind has a completely different style than Bleach (A great album) and the change seems to be on the drums. That doesn't mean Nevermind is a better album than Bleach but it does explain the difference in style.
@@RICHIEV333 of course Grohl is probably the better drummer and obviously you know alot more about drumming than I do but it's probably more than just drumming that made it a different kind of record. They were with a major label, better production, higher production costs, more commercial pop songs on nevermind. Just think it wouldn't of sounded totally different if channing was still on drums but who knows your probably right.
I appreciate Dave but I can't believe they did not have Dale of the Melvins stay. But I get why. Dale and Chad are more technical, experimental and intense drummers. So to me its like yeah those are the dudes you want.
When Chad was fired they didn't know for sure they were moving to a major label. That wouldn't happen for almost a year later. I've always thought the same thing about Chads drumming. He was good but just good. Dave introduced dynamics to the songs that were missing. You can hear it clearly between both versions of In Bloom & how Dave would add his own touch to songs live that Chad had played also like Dive & others. They're 2 different people , its no surprise they play different. Had he lived & the band continued Kurt would have been a fool to fire Dave for the petty reasons he brought up a couple times.
Love Daves drumming he's flawless, but I'm very grateful and in awe of Chad's drumming. I don't like the suggestion that he's a level down on DG - he just had a different style - lighter and busier. He's certainly no worse a drummer than Kurt and krist were guitarists, Nirvana was never about technical music perfection. And the final chad contribution - the arrangements! Bleach and alot of Neverminds arrangements were down to Chad - and I think they were highly memorable, VARIED, innovative and catchy as hell.
I read an article in Guitar Wold magazine about 20 years ago give or take a two; the article said something like (paraphrasing and) that Channing's drum style was more like the other grunge sound, like heavier, slower, sludgier type sound, and that's the kinda music he wanted to play, which you can tell by some of the old Nirvana songs on Bleach.
That was kind of always Nirvana’s live thing. I think you’d be hard pressed to find a video of a complete show where Nirvana was tight. I think Kurt kind of liked creating that chaos in live shows. Maybe his perspective was ‘if you want the tight and orderly version of these songs, you can listen to the album.’
@@plasticplanetdiscgolf Tough to say if Chad was sloppy or if he was just following Kurt’s lead. I mean, when they did play a song right, he seemed fine
Dave Grohls is probably one of the top 3 drummers that ever lived. His mother was a music teacher I believe but he had the foundation a legend needs. Backup vocals, hits hard af, and just had the fire and passion for music. Another thing is this dude.is always happy I wish I had that trait alone.
It's not a question of who was the better drummer overall. It was a question of who was the right drummer for that time in the band. Channing's drumming suited the sound of Bleach perfectly, but as Cobain said, they needed someone different for the pop hook that Nirvana had in mind for Nevermind.

Channing was pure punk. For Nirvana to go more mainstream/MTV, Grohl was definitely the way to go. Unfortunately, this sell-out led to Cobain's death a few years later (he was always a punk at heart and success in pop killed him).
More metal i would say, Kurt considered himself punk but his music was pop with few exceptions, personally those exceptions was far better than pop oriented song, to me Paper cuts and If u must are best and most heavy songs he made, and maybe most heavy songs in any rock genre ever, slow tempo adds complete heavyness, never heard anything similar to that
@@vilimbubas1302 Pre-Nevermind is hardcore punk and about as far from pop as music can get. If you're not familiar with hardcore, it will sound like under-produced, let's say "minimalist" metal. Do a TH-cam search for "Nirvana Immodium (or Breed)" right now.

My two fave nirvana albums are bleach and in Utero. So bookended by both drummers. I personally prefer the music chad did later as opposed to Dave’s foo fighters but that means nothing. They both complimented those two records individually.
I still find it funny the people still think that Nirvana was just a garage band that made it. Lmao not that they were like most pop bands out there, strategically put together by the label higher ups.
I don't wanna sound horrible but chad just looked like he wasn't in the same zone as chist and kurt, you can tell they both totally got each other, whereas chad was just this guy who was there with them, he seemed like a nice guy, but you can see when dave joined them that they became a true tight band and everything was spot on. I do actually really like chad's drumming and I find it more interesting than dave's, it has a more "stoner metal" vibe, which I find really interesting to listen to in their early songs, but at the same time, I can't imagine the songs on nevermind having chad's drums, it wouldn't have worked, which is probably what kurt was thinking. I can kind of imagine his drumming working on in utero, but then again that whole album has a sound of the aftermath of the success of nevermind, so it would also not have fitted if they got chad back. But then again, it might've sounded better, as they went kind of backwards to what they used to do, it could've been more diverse if they had chad and dave drumming on different songs. But we can always say what could've happened I guess
@@Funkyflannel96 I really don't like metal, but bleach did have metal vibes\vibezzz but more stonerish, in a way that I like, I didn't know how else to explain it really :D Kurt could've made gospel, moombaton, or friend hop tbh though and he would've made it sound good. I feel bad for Chad because it almost wouldn't have mattered what the drums were if Kurt wrote the songs the same. I know a lot of people will disagree but it's all about the instrumental melody and vocal melody. I will say I'm glad to have heard In Bloom with Grohl. Having heard the demos, of course listene to Bleach thounds of times and seeing them live in 1989, i can say, that Dave is a good copycat. What Dudeman left out, not beeing a drummer, is that Dave also copied much of the prerecording tracks Chad already recorded. I'm thinking to myself, why there are no credits for Chad in Never Mind ? And sorry, but Chad was a more sensitive drummer, and i have to disagreee with Kurt here, he played Ghost Notes live in 1989. I stood left of Chad back in 1989. He also was a clockwork and also could play loud and heavy parts. But i knew, he didn't fit right in. He was to sensitive, introverted, but he sure was a great drummer with potential when playing in the right band ! Also, i have to disagree, that Dave Grohl is one of the best Drummers in the Rockworld. I also have to disagree with Kurt, that he could play a Led Zepellin Song Note by Note. I never saw him playing a full or half time shuffly at all ;-) So that's a myth. Few musos could come back from being in a band like Nirvana, losing a frontman like Cobain for most would be the end of their careers but not Grohl. Dave Grohl = rock legend.
Dave’s tempo and meter is absolutely perfect. If you listen to chads live drumming it’s obvious that his tempo was inconsistent.
@CHAD Listen to him within context of the style,. He has something very unique a sense of timing that’s very similar to Jimmy pages. That first seems a bit sloppy until you listen you realize he’s in the pocket
@CHAD Yeah, I hate great drumming too.
i'm not a fan of Foo Fighters, but Dave's drumming on In Utero is superlative!
Nor me
Just listened to Fire Ants and boy what an awesome experience! Fantastic band who deserved more recognition. Everyone should give it a try.
I like both Chad and Dave styles, both are very skilled in them. The fact is about the kind of sound that Kurt wanted, and definitely, he leant towards kinda mainstream and not so twin pedal punk-metal. I personally prefer Chad and Bleach punk-metal, but I'm really happy what they made after, either Nevermind or In Utero, both albums have great songs with their new groove. Kurt was clear about what he wanted, even getting close to what he calls "pop" or radio. And he got more than this, he made a legendary band, he became rockstar!
Chad did some double bass playing on Bleach
It's worth noting that Dave was playing a lot of Chad's beats on Nevermind.
And Chad's beats were Kurt's beats. Kurt was a back seat drummer the whole time.
Bro I hate when people say that Like Bro only beat that Dave ever played of chads is in Bloom and he played it much better. He not a better drummer then Grohl period he was fired for a reason
@@kevenrowe29581.That is factually incorrect because they tracked a bunch of Nevermind stuff before Grohl joined and the songs are almost identical to what is on the final release.

Live 1988-1990 era Nirvana was the best. It's probably been 20+ years since I"ve ever listened to Nevermind or In Utero but I'll still listen to Bleach and Incesticide once in a while.
Having 2 shy quiet types in a 3 piece would hold you back when you make it i think.
Pains me for Chad... but Dave is so amazing. Must have been so tough for him and the band. ;((
Chad also wrote all the drum tracks on never mind. Dave liked them so much he asked if he could use them.
It was literally just in bloom you have no idea what your talking about I hate when people talk out the ass. EDIT : in bloom , Lithium , breed and something’s else I can’t recall but the the rest of nirvana 100 percent dave
I Love when Kurt smiles in interviews. It's not something he often does.
Basically Kurt and Krist were constantly evolving their sound but Chad could not keep up.
Like Cobain said they were leaning towards pop, Channing is more a "Grunge" drummer. I prefer Channing also. and by the way some of Nevermind's drumming was actually wriiten by Channing.

We might never had heard of Nirvana if it hadn’t been for Chad’s efforts and contribution.
Been reading through the comments and people have their favorites. Of course Chad is amazing and Dave is one best already -
but maybe aside from the skill, Im sure it has something to do with personalities too.
Great video brother
I think Dave helped put nirvana on the map.my opinion
chad genuinely seems like a lovely guy, would suck to have to fire him, and then to publicly forget his next bands name on film. would make one feel really guilty i think
I haven't read Kurt's journal in a long time but I remember him saying that Chad kept skipping practice and Kurt finally got fed up with it.
Ignoring dale crover is a huge oversight...melvins/dale are key to nirvana even being a band at all...
With any break up...if you're not happy with someone you're just not happy. Chad actually plays on NeVeRmInD...those are his cymbals on "Polly" 🥁👀
I love the Bleach album, but I did call it, rock'n roll cha, cha, cha. It worked perfectly for bleach (one of my favorite albums of all time) but would never have worked for the songs on Nevermind.
Most of the songs on Nevermind were written while Chad was in the band. Probably wouldn't of made much of a difference.
That be a bummer the fact of being let go from the band they exploded in fame after
Chad is a great drummer
ANOTHER GREAT VIDEO
would be interesting to hear side by side comparisons on both chad and dave ( drums only) on the same songs.
The drummer is the heart beat of the band....
Dave is as good as he is because he's a Peart/Rush fan and a musician.
“ ‘S’one hell of a cymbal!”
Cool channel Dude!
I read an article in Guitar Wold magazine about 20 years ago give or take a two; the article said something like (paraphrasing and) that Channing's drum style was more like the other grunge sound, like heavier, slower, sludgier type sound, and that's the kinda music he wanted to play, which you can tell by some of the old Nirvana songs on Bleach.
he is right though, firing someone is the hardest thing a caring person can do. its brutal and has to be done.
Love your program dude thnx
Notice how he mentions Dave's "metronome timing." I like Chad's stuff but I've seen some of the Bleach era shows on YT and things got sloppy.
@@mgreco712 Kurt was usually pretty sloppy. But sloppy guitar and drums just becomes trash. I think he was smart enough to realize that.
@@plasticplanetdiscgolf Tough to say if Chad was sloppy or if he was just following Kurt’s lead. I mean, when they did play a song right, he seemed fine

What did Chad do next? What did Dave do? Kurt made a harsh, but correct decision.
I like when David Bowtie covered that Nickelback song "The Man Who Sold the Bird"
I cried through the whole song....
Without nirvana dave would be alanis morrisetter tour drummer
No
Dale was the best Nirvana drummer

It might not have been easy for Kurt but he was ruthless enough to do it straight

I feel bad for Chad because it almost wouldn't have mattered what the drums were if Kurt wrote the songs the same. I know a lot of people will disagree but it's all about the instrumental melody and vocal melody. I will say I'm glad to have heard In Bloom with Grohl. Best drums on the Nevermind record in my opinion.
IMHO a drummer, who cannot play a shuffle is not a complete drummer and therefore not a world class drummer ;-) Dave was/is good in what he's was doing, a clockwork and copycat. Sorry guy, but that had to be said, cause it's true.
