My x3600h from Crutchfield, “open box” deal (literally someone opened the tape & nothing more) for $800 back in 2020 has been nothing short of impressive with my mid level 7.2.4 atmos system. Add in the expanded $20 audyssey control app & its even better than before. There’s still sooo much versatility I haven’t even scratched into yet.

Forget those other reviews. I can't recommend any other receiver brand or Sound United receiver lower than the Denon X3xxx series or equivalent Marantz. The reassign-able front L R pre outs make these unbeatable for using as pre-pro's for 2 channel stereo. I am streaming HD from a PC to a Topping E50 DAC then into a Denon X3700H then pre-out to a Anthem MCA 225 v2 amp with 225x2 watts continuous power. You won't get this kind of performance out of any other standalone receiver.

All this talk about sound differences is nonsense. How are you really gonna compare the sound of two Receivers when it takes at least 5 minutes to swap them over? Then confirmation bias sets in, because you read a few times on the interwebs that Yamaha has a more neutral sound, you're gonna say to yourself "hmmmm, yeah, this IS a little more neutral and less hyped than the Denon!" And of course reviewers are gonna want to sound authoritative and justify themselves so feel like they need to say something about the sound, instead of "well yeah, it sounds ok, so did the other one, i have no idea!"

So the youtubers reviewing the Denon receiver probably have bright-sounding speakers and are blaming the "brightness" onto the receiver. Keep in mind that those youtubers also "hear" from the gear they "review", whatever the most generous manufacturers incentivize them to hear! $$$ 🤑 Those youtubers also believe they can hear sound variations caused by changes in atmospheric temperature/pressure, as low as 0.5 degrees C/F and 0.01 millibar - 0.00001 bar!🤨

I can hear the difference between the 3800 and the 4500. I have both in my room. The 3800 is fatiguing. You can get it to distort at about 90 dB. Robinson is correct. The 3800 has a bunch of handshake issues. It's very clinical sounding. In music, the voices are way off. They put a dialog enhancer in the 3800 and it changes the eq. I jumped at this Denon but the 4500 sounds so much more natural and non fatiguing to me. The Audyssey settings are the same. I only correct first reflections ..I have kef towers and surrounds.

With a price drop to €925 here in the EU this is a good receiver. Maybe it measures a little bit lower then the first generation of the x3700h (AKM) but is almost the same as the second generation 3700h. But there is a Dirac possibility and that's a big advantage.
The competition isn't doing it better in the same price range.
And also, some of the "reviewers" mentioned in this video don't know anything about audio and are getting payed to promote stuff. Andrew i.e. also sayed Jamo S807 sounded great...well look at the measurements of that speaker (Erin's Audio Corner) they are terrible. 😂

Actual HDMI sources play flawlessly, but I am always tweaking things in the OSD overlay. I was looking at the X1700H or X2800H. What is there out there that just works in the ~$700 range? There are so many subjective variables that come into play here. Room size, room finishing such as floors, walls , ceilings, furniture etc.
Then you have speakers and their placement. Last and certainly not least, human ears are totally different from one person to the next.
We live in the glory days now, where all big name players are offering features and technology that was a pipe dream just a few years ago.
I recently took delivery of a Marantz SR6015, and is in my opinion, is an amazing product that delivers exactly what I was looking for when listening to two channel for all genres of music. It replaced a twenty year old Pioneer AVR that lost its left A Channel.
And I haven't even upgraded the speakers yet. Just using twenty year old RCA three way floor speakers with 12 inch woofers, which are by no means, even slightly audiophile quality. But yet the Marantz has totally transformed them. I can only imagine what will happen when the new real speakers arrive.

Over the years, I have learned that you always have to match the proper AVR/Pre/Pro to your speakers. If speakers are bright and foward sounding than match with warmer sounding AVR/Pre/Pro
But if speakers are laid back than match with bright sounding AVR/Pre/Pro. It is important to listen AVR/Pre/Pro by pairing with your own speakers. Hence there is no such thing is best brand of speakers or best brand of AVR/Pre/Pro. You have to pair them, match them according to your listening taste. Room, placement and calibration will make a huge impact on the quality of sound.

It’s $1600 at Best Buy right now and has support for 4 individual subwoofers (managed separately), this will save some people having to buy a $200 DAC to deal with subs. You can also configure one subwoofer out to run a bass kicker (one of those rumble attachments you can put under a couch to really feel vibrations). It has 5 full HDMI 2.1 HDCP 2.3 ports where the 4700 only has one. It has the new updated Denon UI interface, the 4700 is still using the older interface. The 3800 will also have the paid Dirac Live upgrade available in March 2023…the 4700 isn’t getting that ability.
The amps are slightly less power out than the 4700 but really both of these receivers are begging for external amplification anyway given the flexibility of all the pre-outs.
The 4700h I think just shot back up to $2200 at which price it absolutely is a pass. But at $1500 it was a great price. Just not better than the $1600 3800h it seems.
I just got the 3800 h today from Best Buy but may not have time to set it up for days still.

      Hello.
Thanks for pointing this out, and yes, I am very aware of this. His reasoning is because his website/channel are all about the science (hence his company's name), so he doesn't want his personal/human views to skew what the data is saying. At the end of some reviews, he does give his own subjective listening experience though (however, with speakers I believe he listens to them in mono rather than stereo, which is slightly controversial in itself).
In practice, Amir's work makes a difference to my life - most of the highest rated gear does sound better than the lower rated gear on the SINAD scale (to my ears anyway).
However, I find there comes a point where you get diminishing returns (once you reach the high end stuff), and that's where Amir's reviews start to lose meaning.
Overall, I think his data are more meaningful than subjective reviews could ever be, albeit still not a complete picture!
      Have a good day!

Oh man I detest ASR, measure with your ears! If you like the sound overall then who really cares about measurements. I am still rocking the Yamaha AV receiver - I'm starting to fancy a change though...😂 (you know how it is). Don't think I'll be moving to D&M receivers, but am considering an Arcam .. possibly...

That's not what you need and you also don't need a preamp to power the two 800Fs, which you most probably use as front left and front right. What you need is a power amp (since you already have the 3800h, that is). Since you're on a budget, you should look at pro audio power amps. A Crown XLS or a QSC.

Returning the Denon 6500 for an arcam avr20 is probably one of the best upgradeable decisions I've made to date. In my experience even though the £2,000 Denon was pretty good at multi-channel audio, whenever the soundstage went from an actor's whisper to breaking out with loud noise effects, I still found myself having to reach for the remote control again. IMO whether it's the 6500, 3800 or whatever, Denon AVRs dynamic range is a little lacking and as far as two channel stereo is concerned, well let's just say I don't think one is gonna be impressed! And to think right now coz the arcam avr21's has just recently been released one can now purchase an arcam avr20 for 30% off at £2,000 😯... it has an toroid amplifier, audiophile grade DAC (9026 pro sabre) plus an toroidal transformer which btw are unusual for AVRs nowadays and let's not forget it also has a dirac calibration already implemented!
If one cares about sound quality it's a no-brainer.

Compared to the Marantz it "maybe" might sound cooler a bit more high end and I certainly have to pump up sub level but I also needed to do this with my marantz...I think after weeks of tinkering and just generally acclimating to it, it will sound just the same. I think the biggest difference in sound is really the xt32 and ability to choose top rear over top middle as I currently have my heights directly over seating. Auro 2D does make stereo music sound amazing. So in general to my ears it has pretty much the same sound quality as my less feature full marantz.
