I've had the yamaha rxa6a for a few weeks and I'm completely thrilled. I had the yamaha rxa2040 for years and it was good, but what the rxa6a can do in terms of sound is worlds apart. i run a 9.1 setup and i always wanted this quality. all updates that yamaha promised were delivered. there are no problems with hdmi 2.1 or other technical failures. ps5 and xbox seriesx run fine. your review of the yamaha rxa6a back then wouldn't be the same today and your new review would amaze you.
all denon owners have fun with it,

I've been using the same audio set up for the last 14 years, hoping to get a new one when I turn 45 in 3 years. If I tuck away like $100 a month from now till then for it I could build something sweet I bet.

Love your help with all this technology!!!!!
Last week I bought the Marantz NR1200 based on your review... strictly for 2 channel stereo, not our Main system but maybe most frequently used based on its location. We are very very pleased Andrew! The technology is amazing and I am hearing streaming music better than ever... Cd and turntable very good too... and it looks great. Bluetooth my phone well too. Thank you for all you do!!! I even found a new one on sale!! Way below the 799!!! So I really feel good about it.

When You Know Your Stuff, You Know Your Stuff! 😁I consider myself an audiophile, I currently own a Marantz SR8012 which I completely respect. It has taken me many, many nights to tune it to my sound taste and I believe it has finally paid off (however, unlike your wife Kristi and my wife, I love doing this stuff 😅). Prior to getting my Marantz SR8012, I listened to many different A/V receiver brands and models, and I could not agree more on ALL OF THE COMMENTS AND HUGE ASSISTANCE that you're giving through these videos because it is simply putted: AMAZING AND SUPER HELPFUL. Thank you so much for creating PROFESSIONAL, FUN, and SUPER INFORMATIVE content on this subject as it TOTALLY MAKES A DIFFERENCE when someone is about to spend $,$$$.$$ + TIME on the heart of it all, an A/V receiver. I will continue to follow your videos and even consider joining the membership soon. THANK YOU! 😃

X3800h was a hassle free replacement for my old denon 3311ci. I needed 4k. After running room adaptation I can hear voices much better on the x3800h. The setup was super easy and fast. Also I can use 1 Apple TV remote to control everything so the harmony system is in the trash! Really like the simplicity of that.

I have an ONKYO NR717 bought back in 2014 and it has served me well for music and movies. I am 75 and I get a lot of enjoyment from my 5.1 ONKYO system, NVidea Shield and Sony 4k TV but my system does not have the newest sound capabilities. In addition, the Onkyo does not have 4k capability so I have to use an HDMI vidio/audio splitter to get sound to the AV receiver and 4k video from the NVidea Shield to the TV. All in all, my system clearly is in need of an update and I follow all your weekly posts with high interest in the new AV Recievers you have reviewed this year. The DIRAC LIVE Room Correction is the cherry on top and the Onkyo RZ50 is my current pick. Unfortunately, I can't afford this upgrade this year and have set late Spring for my update. Your Atmos speaker install inspired me and I hope to add 4 ceiling speakers next year too. So, thank you for your insights from both of you for you are clearly reaching your audience with timely and well thought out equipment reviews.

Still no buyer's remorse with my purchase of the Onkyo TX-RZ50. The negative impression for stereo music listening on the X3800H is what would have prevented me most from purchasing it. On a side note, despite me enjoying the Onkyo...I actually found my Yamaha TSR-700 (RX--V6A) A LOT easier to tweak than the Onkyo. I'm still filling lost on all the options I have with Dirac Live on the Onkyo. Definitely diverse and respected perspectives abound on these AVRs. Keep up the good work!

Andrew, first off... Another great review. Thank you both for the time and especially the honesty you put into your reviews. I can't say this is strong enough terms. Your channel is my "go to". The question I have is, do you think the issues with two channel playback on the Denon is due to the amplification? I ask this because I'll be using whichever new AV receiver I buy with high end external amplification.

I just purchased the Denon X3800H, and I couldn't be happier. Dolby Atmos is working like a dream and the sound is rich, warm, and makes movie-watching a wonderful experience. It will be upgradable for DIRAC sometime in early 2023. But for now, Audyssey's MultEQ sounds pretty freakin' awesome in my home theater setup!

Love your channel and reviews!! Really enjoy getting Kristi's take each time as well!! Was anxious for your review of the X3800H. Back ordered one from a local retailer recently, so still waiting. Almost cancelled after watching your review. However, I cannot source the RZ50 locally. You mentioned "Had Denon waited for all of the software and bugs to be worked out first, it may have been an outright great one"... Does this mean it might have topped the RZ50 if the HDMI switching bugs weren't present and Dirac was already included? I will not listen at really loud volumes, so should not have the distortion and just TV/Movies so will avoid the stereo disappointment.

  • @SoniclayersMusic

Is that crunchiness in the high end coming from the DA converters or the amp? Did you test the sound with just the pre outs to a separate amplifier and wondering if that improved the sound of the high end?

Good morning guys ! Loved my Onkyos as I have owned 3 of their top receivers but they all stopped working and are doorstops now. My Denon AVR-X4400H is still fully functional and sounds great using an Emotiva XPA5 amplifier. Wanting Dirac and 4k 120hz for gaming so still unsure what to upgrade to. great vid! I've had my eye on this as a 1st receiver. I think it allows for a good upgrade path - I can buy speakers until I fill out 7.4.4 with a power amp and eventually switch to a 16+ channel processor once I have everything connected to a power amp.

  • @misterwirez7731
    @misterwirez7731 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I love the simplicity of Denon. Having said that, a refresh wouldn't hurt, a simple external and font update could bring over some more customers. I'm looking at the next model up. Switching brands is tough. I've been a "Denon guy" for 30 years. I hate the portal of Mirantz and I never cared for Onkiyo sound, especially in a 2.0/2.1 channel. I come from the big analog systems of the 70's. My Dad had nice systems. So a bit warmer is always better, imo.
The Denon drawback is DIY firmwares. I don't mind so much, if it's updating or upgrading later on, but not waiting for a FW update on a brand new system. I agree finish it.

I have loved these last few reviews but keep getting confirmation that my choice to trust your recommendation of the Onkyo RZ-50 earlier this year was the right choice. I just listened to the Cinema 50 and X3800 back to back at my local Magnolia store with B&W 600 and 800 series speakers. The two receivers sound exactly the same. Exactly. There is zero difference. The X4800 (which sounds exactly like the Cinema 40) did sound better to me than the X3800.

So I had the RZ50 and it’s a good receiver. Just not my cup of tea so I sold it and got the x3800. I like it way better. The sound is much more punchy on the Denon and the great Dirac/Audisey debate is not even that for me as I didn’t think Dirac was all that on the rz50. Now full disclosure I have own Denon for over 35 years and maybe it’s just the placebo effect, but then in, that’s just my go to av receiver. Still I agree with you , Andrew it should have gotten the needed firmware updates before launch as I had major HDMI issues before doing 2 updates before I could even start the setup progress .

Got a RZ50 2 Weeks ago and replaced it with a Denon 4800...got both receivers for about the same price. I've got to say that just for music, the onkyo sounded better and it's true that the soundstage felt much larger on the onkyo. But with Movies or games the Denon is way better. Not to mention that the denon can handle 4 subs separately, has auro and overall has more options/customization. I like both receivers though

Thanks for the video, another great one. Keep in mind that the x3800h can be setup in full pre-amp mode and now you'll have a $1699 pre/pro...Plus the sound can be vastly improved by using the new Audyssey MultEQ-X software tool. It's a little pricey at $199.99 but it gives you advanced control and functionality to really tailor your sound and improve your room's shortcomings.

I have always matched my denon receivers with B&W speakers. Have had the 700 series for over a decade now. I headed them being matched with Keff sleakers, but the sound is really different. Really agressive in the highs. I feel that with the B&W speakers the sound denon puts out is just perfect for my taste. I also should mention, that sound is personal. So this is just my opinion.

The X3800H has support for 11.4. In fact, it can do 5.4.6 unlike the RZ50 and have Auro 3D. Also looks like you can assign whichever pre-out for the external amp unlike the RZ50 which only allows the rear surrounds for 11 ch. Still, I agree the RZ50 is still a better value even at the new $1600 price which includes the Dirac and most people in the USA would be perfectly happy with it. But the X3800H maybe a better buy for those who want a bit more options with their speaker setup. And competition is always good for this market.

Looking forward to the budget friendly AVR you mentioned that is upcoming for you to review. I use AVRs for 2 channel stereo due to the all inclusiveness of it (bluetooth, DAC, USB, HDMI inputs etc). Integrated amps with those features are 1.5 to 2x above my budget. Hence why I like AVRs for an all in one solution. Thanks for all your comprehensive reviews.

If we're considering less than £1,000 (sorry, I deal with gbp) as budget, then Denon are unbeatable in the budget range as far as my experience goes. Went from a Pioneer as my first unit (which included speaker set), picked up an Onkyo when wanting something capable of 4K passthrough. Had issues with the unit when it came to the bluetooth. The indicator light flashed intermittently and if turned off it wouldn't turn back on. Got a replacement and it had the same issues. Resorted to not turning off the bluetooth.
Just recently picked up a Denon for HDMI 2.1 and ALLM support and it has been perfect. Affordable price and it has network features which the Onkyo didn't including automatic firmware updates. No issues that I've noticed. Intuitive UI. Sound is great. Or at least, no worse than the Onkyo was. Still using the speaker set that came with the pioneer. Those satellite speakers can put it out enough to stop me from considering any full range sets. Did pick up a separate Yamaha sub though, as the original Pioneer one used a different connection.

I purchased the 4700, and I am pleased. Yea, they have an “old” look, but mine sits out of the way in a gear closet, so I never see it. It does everything I need, and more. Any chance you can review the AVR-X4800H? For close to $1000 more than the 3800h, with nearly the same specs, it would be great to see where that extra cost was put, and why you would choose the 4800H over the 3800H, if at all. Apparently the components are better, with a better DAC in the 4800. Can you hear the difference though? I think a lot of people would be interested in knowing. Thanks!

My 5 bed layers are being powered by the amp and the AVR is powering the 4 height channels. I still can't find many people reviewing it. It seems like a pretty good receiver. I just don't know how it compares to others.

I have bright speakers and am afraid of pairing them with bright sounding 3800h. The Cinema 50 may be a better match. May I ask if you bought the 4800h due to a difference in sound over 3800h?

    • @jerameyregimbald2137
      @jerameyregimbald2137 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

@@gurjantm I have klipsch speakers currently. When I used Audyssey the speakers didn't seem bright at all. When I used Dirac, They became clearer, more dynamic, with better separation, but they are a lot brighter. I'm going to play around with it to see if I can fix it. I love everything about how DIRAC W/ Multi Sub bass control changed the sound of my speakers, except for making them sound to bright. Some audio sounds very harsh at louder volumes. I applied a Harmon curve to my Dirac filter, and that helped, but I feel like I can do more. The reason I went with the 4800h over the 3800, was the better components. The X4800H has 32-bit processing (called AL32 and HD32 by Denon) which is supposed to provide more precision when processing the audio signal, I believe, and a better AMP. I got myself an Emotiva AMP and I'm running my 5 bed layer speakers through it. I notice no difference in sound quality, or tonality when hooked up to the amp. I do notice it sounds better when I turn it up though, more so than when it was just the AVR. I knew eventually I was going to get this amp, and another one down the road, and eventually use this as a processor only. Also with the addition of the component video input, I thought the 4800 was a better option for me. I never had the 3800, so I don't know if my reasoning is correct. I doubt most people would notice a difference, and aside from occasional switching issues I have, I love the 4800.Unless you need the extras like component video, 1 extra HDMI, extra triggers, more zones, and 20 extra watts the 3800 is the better option for the price. Also, if you don't have the speakers, or the ears, to notice the subtle differences between the two audibly, you're better off getting the 3800, I imagine.

So I listened very carefully to Andrew 3 x 😂and went ahead with this AV. For home theater it’s a massive upgrade to SR7009. It’s quite sensational actually. For music however is totally lacking. It’s very poor compared to SR7009. But I love 2 channel listening and I have an Eversolo DMP-A6 which I found amazing analogue in pure direct with this AV. As Andrew says there’s a bit of extra bass in the Denon and it helps me not to miss a sub on pure direct. Thanks Andrew. This review helped me make the right choice.

Hi Andrew- Its funny you bring up the HDMI switching issues (8:11). Switching between the Google Chromecast with Google TV 4K Adapter (YCbCr 4:2:2 12 bit) to the Telus 4K Optik TV Box (4k 60Hz YCbCr 4:2:0 10 bit) brings up no signal or sound on my Sony TV (XBR65X900F). Switching between Chromecast to Playstaion 5 (back and forth) is fine. But two things do seem to fix it is 1.) Switching HDMI OUT from auto (Dual) to Monitor 1 and then back to auto (Dual) again makes the signal come on, and/or 2.) Switching the Telus Box from Enhanced to Standard in 4K/8K Signal Format, but the specs change to 4k 60Hz YCbCr 4:2:0 8 bit on the Telus Box (switching back and forth after changing this setting makes it work fine). But with that setting I'm losing out on a lot of colour. The only real thing for now to make the Telus box work right away is to start the TV/Receiver/Telus TV Box as the first thing ON to start watching TV for the day. So this seems to be another Firmware issue that I hope gets resolved in the future, it is a strange issue but I can live with it but still hope it gets fixed. Beyond that I love the way it sounds. Also I look forward to the DIRAC LIVE Firmware Update in March 2023.

For what it's worth, Marantz has a reputation among many of having a "warm" character to its sound while Denon is more neutral. Regardless, Andrew, I'm curious of whether the Denon's sound is attributable to it's preamp section or its amp section or a combo of the two? Audio Science Review (I think I got that correct) indicated the preamp section of the 3800 was inferior to the 3700 version. Finally, my issue with the Onkyo is its sub outputs aren't independent of one another. Thus, Dirac's bass correction (i.e. the more advanced separate module) is somewhat neutered whereas the Denon has 4 independent subwoofer outs. However, the estimated price for Dirac on the Denon and Marantz is crazy expensive relative to its current selling price.

HOWEVER, for AV receivers it would be much more useful to present the same info with DRC engaged, since that’s how 99% of users will listen. After all, it’s conceivable that Audyssey could mitigate the soundstage deficiencies of this unit. In fact, the engineers might have phoned it in on soundstage for precisely that reason.

I am seriously looking at the Onkyo TX-RZ50 (as Kristi's 2nd place pick) to replace my Yamaha V6A.. you picked up on my issue with it.. there are SO MANY settings, I get overwhelmed. And, I can't seem to get it just right with that one. Totally frustrates me. I've had Onkyo in the past and loved them (even had the separate Surround Sound component they sold years ago).

Potential is def there. I'd love to see it with its full promised feature set and the real advantages it will have. I would definitely re-visit this denon or Marantz near end of 2023, or even early 2024 when they get the Dirac Bass Management 2nd update.

@@andrewrobinsonreviews yep always do, have enjoyed them for a few years now. You both do such a great job, and also enjoy the bloopers. Watched many of your reviews after out Integra AVR took a dump.😁

I love Denon as a brand. Their higher end SACD players are exceptional, I love the PMA-800NE in my library which gives a beautifully rich, warm, clear tone, and I really wish they'd release a 4K disc player as my 3313 UDP is just outstanding. But. But I cannot stand their AV receivers. I've owned three, hated two of the three, and couldn't live with the heat sink that was the third (an otherwise beautiful X5200 in silver). Their receivers are so ugly, and I cannot find any excitement in their cinema experience - they've always left me cold. For my money, it's Arcam that lead the way, I love everything about the looks, the immediate and accurate change of inputs, and oh, that sound....

Coming from a Marantz, I lucked up on a RZ50. What is your favorite setting for music on the Onkyo?

Thanks for the update on your effort of getting the Arcam in front of us. I'm praying for the AVR21 to show up in my home. Thanks Kristy

Great review! Will you ever review the AVR-X4800H? I'm in the market for a new receiver. I've had the Yamaha RX-V3900 since 2009, and while I've loved it for the last 14 years, it's lacking in the technology department. I'm also upgrade to a 4k TV and 4k projector and would like a receiver that can accommodate both while not being a step down from what I currently have. Right now it seems like the X4800h is a better matchup to what my receiver was when it came out, than the 3800h is. I recently put 4 in ceiling speakers in my movie room in anticipation for an Atmos setup. I currently have 5.1.4 speaker setup and would like to eventually go to a 7.1.4 or even a 7.2.4 soon. I have yet to see anyone review the 4800h and would love to see what your thoughts are on it! thanks! I just subscribed!

Hello, I have been loving my Yamaha rx v3800 for 15 years as well.
Was looking to get the x4800h to see if auro 3d /atmos would be a decent upgrade, not more sounds but a better movie experience.
My understanding is that a stand alone unit like the x4800h or x3800 won't cut it when all 9 channels are needed during demanding dynamic movies.
So, this week I was able to get a open - box denon 3800h for £723 with 2 year warranty. My plan is to use the Yamaha rx-v3800 to power the front 3 (lcr) speakers. And have the Denon power the rest. This will enable me to run a decent 11.4 auro 3d set up that also covers 5.4.4 atmos.
I focused on the x4800h because of the difference in the amplifier section but I would still have needed to use an external amplifier. The amplifier section of the x3800 will be more than capable of running all the lesser demanding channels. So spending an extra £600 didn't make sense.
I'm excited about having 4 independent subwoofer outputs and the new version of Audyssey xt32, plus all the latest multi-channel options.
I have all the extra speakers and denon 3800 here now and plan to get it all set up during the following week. If I don't feel that it's a decent upgrade in my movie experience than I'm happy to return the Denon and stick with the excellent Yamaha rx v3800 with 5.4 (I run 4 subs with a minidsp).
What option did you end up with? 👍👍

@@MrOkcyurwin I ended up buying the 4800h. A couple months later I bought a 5 channel Emotiva amp, which I think has 200-250Watts per channel. I don't remember off the top of my head. I'm powering my 5 bed layer speakers with the amp and the 4800 is powering my 4 in ceiling speakers. I have a 5.2.4 setup. I really like the setup for the most part. I get HDMI switching issues occasionally, which are annoying. Also, I got Dirac Live with Multi Sub bass management. It made a big difference in clarity and isolating individual sounds, but it made my speakers sound harsh. I need to play around with it more.

@@MrOkcyurwingreat choice. I did similar, have arendal 1723s speakers and run fronts woth a poweramp. 3800h powers the rest of the 5.1.4. It sounds massive!! Dirac is a big diff though, I agree with andrew. I made the day!
