Nice! I've got the black fade evh wolfgang standard. I put a de-tuna on it. But I've never really been a whammy guy! My favorite is still my les pals and fender stratocaster without trems! Thanks Marty I forgot mines got roasted neck! I love it
Marty. I have one of those. It is taxicab yellow that I bought new just a couple weeks after he died. I love it. I upgraded the pots to evh USA specs, dtuna, and Gotoh tuners. Great video brother. You got a super deal on that one for sure. Love the quilted maple.
If you haven’t, you owe it to yourself to try the EVH sig model sometime Marty. Believe they are coming out with a new Japanese sig version soon at a much lower price point. I got mine before the Fender death tax (RIP EVH). Have a standard, special and US… all very nice and love the neck profile. Actually wanting to try that hollow body WVH has been playing. (335 with that neck profile may turn out to be one of my favorites). Anyway, enjoy the channel…keep up the good work.
I can assure you it is a very thin veneer about .070 thick! I bought a 2020 EVH standard that some young guy had and had some kind of wild strap accident and it caught a hard hit just above the cable jack and ripped off a chunk of veneer about 2" x 3". He was devastated and sold it as is. Gorgeous pound cake Quilt veneer killed. I saw that as a chance have a striped Wolfgang. I bought about $200.00 in Auto grade paint and clear for it. I now have a striped Wolfgang. Just the top I left the back original to make it more usable. That had me setup with paint for 3 more striped EVH replicas. A white and black Eruption, a Charvel 5150 with a OU812 serial number plate I had made and a Strat style 5150. Yeah I had the Stripe bug bad that year. I ended up with 8 Wolfgangs and the last one built from parts from Stratosphere the part out guys who made a rare mistake of putting EVH parts on auction and it seems to have gone unnoticed but for about 3 people. We cleaned house! They haven't done that since! The last one I built I didn't want to put EVH pickups in it because I have so many "correct" ones. I almost put a set of Seymour Duncan JB and 59 in it with coil split like a Charvel San Dimas. At the last moment I scored a EVH neck p/u. So I got a hot 15k Alnico 5 for the bridge. Sorry EVH I like that better. Finally got a 52mm bridge pickup in a Wolfgang.
I have one as well, I modified mine, I put in the true floyd rose push in trem bar, I upgraded all hardware in the floyd rose and nut with FU-Tone titanium with d-tuna with the big brass block and noiseless springs.. I put on the evh striped 5150 fender neck has the wider nut, got the neck from either reverb or stratosphere, had to sand the neck pocket a little for a tight fit, also changed out the volume pot to the low friction pot, then finally had the whole guitar put in a plec machine. That's about as close to the USA version I can come to at half the cost. I have a 98 wolfgang peavey I did everything to as well then had a paint and body shop guy strip it like the Frankie. I have 4 total evh guitars, all with fu-tone, got them off stratosphere and reverb. My 5150 I put poundcake pickup in it. Wish I could attach a picture. My little steinberger is just black, one day I will get the body shop guy strip it too. Wish I could find an actual trans trem for it . Love your videos man, keep rocking VH!!!
Dude… that “sound demo” took us on a great journey. Women in Love was a special treat… man the tone on that song. Love that song & that entire record. =VH= FOREVER
Nice color on the guitar and sounds great. I have Wolfgang Specials (Mexico and Japan) and the recent Frankie. They are amazing guitars for the price. I love all of them. Great tone and playing the Van Halen riffs. 🎸🎶🤘
The Japan models are really nice. They have Birds Eye maple neck and the frets are stainless steel frets which its very easy to bend the strings. I have not put one flat spot on the frets for the last 12 years that I owned it.
Marty love your channel. Great Score on that beautiful guitar. As a fellow EVH fan, You have inspired me to continue to learn more EVH tunes. Your smile at the end says it all! (:
Nice video. Like you Marty I am always looking at various sources (Ebay, Reverb, Craigslist, local pawn shops, estate sales, etc) to pickup new gear at a slightly lower price. Last year I picked up a Wolfgang WG Standard Koa because it was just so pretty and the price was too good to pass up. Lovely guitar although my only complaint is even though it has the same pickups I feel it has a bit of a harsher sound compared to the other Wolfgangs I own....also I wish the D-Tuna came standard. Overall though could not pass a nice guitar like that for the price I got it for.....love it!
Man, I love the hunt. As JB calls it... the guitar safari. It's so fun to get a deal. My rule is if you can find a good guitar for what you'd be paid cash in a trade ... buy it. That's an even break. And who knows. You may never trade it. But if you do, you won't lose the money.
I have a MIJ wolfgang and I love it…they are built like tanks and play like butter…Marty, I too would love to get my hands on one of the 5150 models or maybe that blk and white striped one…maybe one day…rock on bro👍
I got the same thing only mine was black satin and somebody painted it white and now it's got the black stripes it's pretty cool. I like it, but yours is way more fancy than mine. I like that quilted face. I'd say i paid about the same. And yes it was worth it their great guitars. Even the lower-budget ones are good. I also install the D tuna.
I just was lucky, for my 50th family got me the special with sassafras body, love it and for my 52 they got me the striped series 5150 with the matt b/w/r . I feel like they’re good instruments. But really like the neck on the special👍
Thanks for opening the back up and showing the wiring, route, etc. Body wise, the WG Standard is extremely comfortable. I wish the specials and USA models had the same body contours. The neck is too thin for me (E string to E string); string spacing too narrow but great review. Thanks so much for posting.
I finally get to do my own unboxing of this guitar. I got myself one for Christmas Marty! 🤣🎸 I got the WG Standard in Chlorine Burst, it will be here tomorrow!
Holy Crap!! Man you picked that bad boy up for $3 hundee? Dayum! You stole it Bro!! Man what a killer guitar. Absolutely gorgeous, and I think these are very good guitars. I have one in Stryker Red. Love it. As always - great riffage, Marty. Anything Van Halen is a winner... but man you are such a Beast on guitar!
Nobody really notices but the center spring when you install them like that the center spring doesn't do anything really, you only need two anyway. I took out the one in the middle. Never a tuning issue.😎🎸🎶
I tried one of the standards.. the neck carve reminds me more of my Peavey Wolfgang than the Mexican versions.. asymmetric.. a bit chunky on top.. nice rolled edges as well.. I was impressed..
Great Marty 👏👏👏👏!! I want one and I didn't know if between standard or special and I'll stick with the standard, everyone speaks well of it and it's €500 cheaper
I'm impressed as I wanna really skepticle of these. Did you see the made in Japan Wolfgang's that are coming which are basically the USA models but about $1900 less?
It is not the Wolfgang pickup per se that is squishy but the one in the Standard. @Marty5150 I just added a Wolfgang Standard to my Wolfgang Special to serve as a "beater/travel" guitar. I just played it for the first time for 1 hour and I immediately recalled your review. The bridge pickup produces huge sound but it lacks the top end clarity and sizzle of the Wolfgang in my Ensenada Special. I bought for basic practice, much of it unplugged so I don't know if I will upgrade it, but the Wolfgang in your Frankie is like the one in my Special, whereas this one in the Standard is not quite as good.
sweet sounding guitar bro! i found a wild tele clone in a pawnshop with some kind of floydrose setup with h/s pups...reall dark green...i 4get the brand but its the "custom shop" edition... sweet maple fingerboard and fretsides feel nice! yup i put it in layaway...along with a jasmine acoustic model...both for 240!
Instead of letting my Floyd Rose just land on the body I floated it just a tiny bit so it doesn't make a bump sound when you let go of the whammy bar and that doesn't affect the d-tuna. I wonder if you could use a d tuna on a full floating Floyd Rose cuz you can float it a little bit and still have it work.🤔
Don't let the fact that it's the budget wolfgang have you thinking it's not good, the standard is a tone monster and has some features I WISH they would put on the specials. I had the standard ziricote top and it was an incredible guitar for the money. Buuuuut I traded it to a friend because he played it and fell in love with it, so I ended up with his basket case of a baretta and he got my wolfgang.
I still have the clear plastic on my covers as well. except I'm missing the center cover which I don't really care I could always replacing if I need to, cheap I bet.
Thanks man! Well, for TH-cam I run in stereo directly to pro tools with my Fractal AX8 and a Friedman BE model. And Friedman IR's. I usually run delay and reverb on post just for ambience. It's just more consistent to make content like this (for audio purposes and speed). Thanks for watching man!

Another killer way to spend 16 minutes on a Saturday! Thanks Marty! And the WGS guitars are basswood, with a relatively thick maple veneer.
