I think he did that to prepare for a certain role, but is just retired now. He's a British actor, in case you've only seen him in There Will be Blood, Gangs of NY, etc.

Great movie.
But the irony of him saying he dies a true american is epic,as clearly he himself is a european descendant. The thing he hated most was exactly what his ancestors were, immigrants.
Not much has changed in america to this day.
