    Before Britishers came in, hindus had knowledge of their scriptures like Mahabharat etc. This is reflected in poetry of all Bhakti saints

    • @panjabipandit
      @panjabipandit 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mahabharata is our cultural text but it is not our scripture. Is important to understand classification of texts in our faith. Smriti means that which is heard ie. From Brahman (God). Smriti means that which is remembered ie. History and literature written by man. Shruti is the English equivalent of scripture and Smriti is the English equivalent of a novel you buy from a book store. The only shruti text is The Vedas. However, there are numerous smriti written by all sorts of rishi's, guru's, etc. Namely, the Puranas, the Upanishads, the Ramayana, the Mahabharata, the Bhagavat Gita. The distinction was made because smriti's are the authors hypothesis or opinions. They're not fact. They may contain pieces of fact here and there but since it is not considered the word of Brahman it cannot be of equal authority as the Vedas. Smriti is the culture which is ever-changing whilst Shruti is everlasting dharma regardless of the yuga. Smriti documents perspectives in our culture in a certain given time but its also the authors opinion so there are millions of smriti just like theres so many TH-cam comments. Doesn't mean all are followed or agreed to be practiced by the society. Similarly Mahabharata is a commentary of our society during the time it was written and documents a historical event important for our society and people. Its a great text to learn what to do and not to do and it gets you thinking about dharma but to know what *is* dharma and what we are to practice per scripture then you'd only find that jn The Vedas. Hope this clears this up!

    The Pauranic tradition is neglected in this conversion. Not everyone can read Ved, but Pauranic stories are accessible to all. Many of the festivals are in fact from Purana and not itihas.

They may contain pieces of fact here and there but since it is not considered the word of Brahman it cannot be of equal authority as the Vedas. Nowadays everyone can read The Vedas. You don't have to join a gurukula and spend your whole life learning just one book. The fact is though that you will probably never grasp the meaning of just one book of The Vedas without proper instruction. It's like opening a physics book with no background knowledge and trying to learn. It can be done but it'll just be difficult. Also, festivals are culture. They're not the faith. That's why as you pointed out you find them in Puranas- a smriti text. Smriti is the culture which is ever-changing whilst Shruti is everlasting dharma regardless of the yuga. Hope this clears this up!

    I know the purpose of Vaad is different from what I am suggesting. But Vaad should think of now expand it's reach by reaching out to noble persons, heads of different sects of hinduism and discuss with them different aspects of hinduism rather say sanatan so as to instill in the people of their followings about the pride of being a sanatani, bharatiya first rather than identifying self from one's sect (more precisely "jaati"). The faster we do the better we will be to protect fast deteriorating hindu practices which have it's reason more so on to demonstrate self as more secularist than other. Sanatan by it's nature itself is secular one. Had it not been the case today's Bharat would have been different. One cannot expect this from school education because of the while lot of repressive provisions of constitution which were put with a long standing agenda of British and Islamists.
    Society and each sect per say should start teaching the cultural values to future generations along with the reason to perform particular ritual. In my understanding this is the best way to save our tradition from vanishing just like other traditions of the world lost/vanished.
