This is BY FAR the most beautifully simplistic and straightforward advice on measuring the crotch that I have found. I'm definitely going to be investing in your book, and watching all of your videos. A BIG TIME THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!
I've had your patterns for way too long without making my SF pants. Just lost 10 pounds and will redo my blueprint. Watched measuring for pants again today and love your teaching method and descriptions of body parts -- so tactful and encouraging. SFD is so much easier than altering the 'big four' patterns Thank you Glenda!
An alternative is to use 2 measuring tapes. Attach them at the islet so that the 0 mark is at your center crotch. The hanging weight will help you determine center crotch position. Then merely read the number at the front waist and back waist. The number you read will be exactly what is needed in the front and back. To check your work, use a single tape measure to determine the total. The front + back measurements should equal your total. This will allow you determine if you need the "sit down" adjustment to the front or back depending on how much you need to move the tape during your testing. This has helped with making adjustments for my rear "pancake."
I couldn't figure out any other way to do it other than use two tapes measures. Its the only way to get zeros together unless her tape measure is very different from the 5 I have laying around here. I also have a pancake rear. All my extra inches are in my front
Thank you so much Glenda for this interesting and useful video. I love making clothes for my wife. Mainly copying ready to wear I've long wanted to know how the technical side worked. Your very clear instruction has been invaluable in helping me draft a block for Jill (my wife). Greetings from North Wales, UK
Hi Colin, thanks so much for taking the time to leave such a lovely comment. I'm so glad the Sure-Fit Designs system is helping you to sew for your wife.
Hi, I found a way to ensure that the center of the measuring tape goes exactly to the center at the inseam. I got an old pair of tights and attached a small magnet inside where the inseams meet. then I glued another magnet at 0.on the Crotch-O-Meter. That way the center of the COM goes right to the center where my inseams join.
Thank you for that great explanation. Now my back piece is longer than my front, how do I sew them together? I'm fairly new to sewing .Is there a nack to this?
Hi thanks for this very important video.please I like the blouse cowl neck on the maniquin doll there.please can you make a video on how to cut that cowl neck exactly as seen in this video please
TH-cams greatest tutorial. Amazing. No one else explains this. The cross under the body is ALWAYS misaligned on me. both generic pants and tailored. I've been measuring wrong. Never understood where there cross is supposed to be. Why didn't you measure to the top of the waistband? And why was the cross point fixed on the measuring band? Shouldn't it be 'floating' so that it glides to the center underneath the body. Anyway. GREAT video. Thanks a bunch.
Thank you for posting this video; I was really stuck trying to work out how to work out this measurement! You've saved me a lot of hassle and I will definitely look at the website :-)
that`s brilliant! thank you so much :) I have a big butt so RTW pants rarely fit, but I was hesitant about sewing my own pants as well. this gave me courage to try :)
This was so helpful. Always too long in front and never long enough in back. I too my measurements 3 times looking in the mirror to be sure I had the plumb line in the middle. 8-1/2 front, 16-1/4 in the back. Have I done it wrong? I have the elastic at a comfortable spot in my waist and measured to the bottom of the 2” elastic. Again thanks for this video. Soon I’ll have pants that actually fit. 😊
hi mam...IMPORTANT QUESTION... first of all thanks for your wonderful explaination... my QUESTION is... : crotch riser is in the arc line form... and we measure it in the arc length form only and not in straight line manner... so how to calculate it that how much this crotch point must be exactly below the belt line ie how to calculate VERTICAL DISTANCE from belt to the crotch center point in vertical straight form... as it is in the arc form... ???

omgosh. this has literally solved so many probs i've been having with trying to figure out an easier way to draft free-hand patterns for myself and my family! i've found that it's really very hard to solve 2D problems with 3D data lol
I am not a seamstress, but I cannot buy pants/shorts that both fit my back and my front without any weird spaces. I am a weight-lifter with a lean athletic build and strong thick thighs and glutes, so my back and front measurements are really different! (i.e., if it fits my bottom, I have a huge space in the front and the fabric is slouchy, and if it fits my front I'm at risk of ripping stitches in the back! Not flattering AT ALL) Your videos have been so helpful in figuring out why the heck none of the patterns I use (or draft) fit properly. Subscribed!
I measure my front and back separate, when I do that, the back is 4” longer than the front. This method would not work for my back rise. As far as I understand using the slash and pivot method, the maximum spread is 2”?
@Racer Girl - I don't exactly understand your question. Maybe this other video we have will sort this out for you - see this video - th-cam.com/video/_CYET_n0nNE/w-d-xo.html on 5 ways to lengthen center back.
Thank you for clearing this up. I've been looking for an easy way to measure the front and back and for some reason I just kept coming across really difficult stuff haha.
i have a pair of maternity shorts that are too tight around the thighs and bunch up in the crotch, causing discomfort when i sit. thanks for the tips, should help me alter them for a better fit.
Thank you for this video, where should the croft seams join together on the body? Should it be right in the middle where where the fishing line hangs. On RTW my seam is always riding forward a couple of inches. I tried to google this but couldn't find any information on it. Thank you!
Thank you for the knowledge and also for killing my spirits. I admit my pants fit better (according to the material) backwards so that means I have a tummy. 😉
My information is never meant to be critical or down-putting, but sometimes the analogies I use help to make the information clearer (but can offend). If I've offended you, please accept my apology. As many women age, especially after menopause, they lose lose crotch length inches in the back and gain them in the front. This is because they gain fat in the belly and lose fat and muscle in the buttocks.
