    The Devil's Staircase is actually about a third of a mile and two bends of the 14 mile mountain road between Abergwesyn and Tregaron. Also ride the road to Llandovery that runs along the hillside above the Llyn Brianne reservoir.

    • @SaffySprocket
      @SaffySprocket  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      More importantly, how the heck do you pronounce that

    • @rickmancr
      @rickmancr ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SaffySprocket Abergwesyn? As it's spelled (the the last syllable sounds like "sin"). Llyn Brianne? I'm not going to attempt to explain how to pronounce the "ll" sound :-), but Brianne is bree - ann - ee (apparently it's an English cartographer's attempt to spell "bryniau", which is Welsh for hills).

    There's among many another Welsh road Saffy that's so worth the ride. It's quite remote & I don't think we'll known?. It climbs up over the moors between lake Vyrnwy & lake Bala.
    What makes it so special I hear some ask ?. If you make a good day of or better yet a few days than there's so much more.
    I used to live in Llanrhaeadr ym Mochnant only about 10 miles north east of Vyrnwy. Don't worry Saffy, I won't ask you to try pronouncing any of these places lol.
    Anyway, just a few miles up into a steep valley you'll find Pistyll Rhaeadr. It's gorgeous & the second highest waterfall in the UK. Also just at the bottom of the waterfall is a campsite run by two beautiful people, Phil & January.
    After you visit a legendary waterfall, make the gorgeous ride over to Lake Vyrnwy & ride up the right hand side. The scenery is stunning. From there take that ride over the moors & try not to have any collisions with the 🐑 lol. By the time you get to lake Bala it should be nearly lunch time. It's a beautiful little town at the top end of the lake. Lots of cafés, coffee shops & the lake it's self is a water sports paradise if you're into that.
    After you've regenerated in Bala ride down the the left hand side of the lake & at Pandy pick up another spectacular road over the moors back to Vyrnwy & then ride down the opposite side to Llanwddyn which is a lovely little village at the south end of lake Vyrnwy. There's even an amazing sculpture park just below the dam very much worth a visit. Where you go from there is up to your inner compass.
    Thank you as always Saffy for sharing the journey xx

    Little tip for riding tight corners uphill: put more pressure on the footpegs and less pressure on the seat, even to the point of standing up if necessary. Putting more weight on one footpeg aids steering too.

    Rode this last September (Llanwertyd Wells to Tregarron to be precise), wonderfully scenic, remarkably well surfaced for the grade of road. That A-to-B includes the most remote phone box in the country (was going to be removed until folk campaigned for it to stay as a landmark). Route includes Wolf's Leap.
    Inclines interesting when kitted for a tour but totally manageable. As others have said, the staircase itself is a small interlude in the middle but no reason the to-from can't be entertaining as well! Saw 1 m/c, 1 car, 2 or 3 log wagons and 500 sheep :) so def. go off season.
    Oh and '1-in-' makes way more sense than a %age.

    For similar thrills and scenery, I think you'd really enjoy the Elan valley and roads around the Clywedog reservoir.
    If you're approaching from the north and can make a weekend of it, I'd even start from as far north as Lake Vyrnwy (Vernwee) and make your way towards Dinas Mawddwy (Dee-Nass Maww-the-wee)and onto the A470.
    A short hop south on the A470 brings you to Llanbrynmair, (Clan-Breen-Mayer) where you turn Right towards Llanidloes (Clan-need-loyce), via Penyfforddlas/Staylittle. (Pen-uh-for-the-lass) Take your time - no good will come from trying to ride these roads too quickly. Stop at the top of the reservoir for a breather and to marvel at the scenery all around you.
    Continue to Llanidloes (Interesting old market hall here) where you can fill up with petrol, coffee, cake, etc.
    Retrace your route and head back the way you came for a mile or two then turn Left towards the old lead mines and ride the route around the reservoir, which will eventually bring you back onto the road you started on, albeit North of the reservoir.
    You can loop towards Machynlleth (Mack-un-cleth) from a road a little north of where you'll come out - via Forge, and travelling through some lovely countryside - different to the rolling hills you've just left.
    For that night, (If making a weekend of it) I'd stay near Rhayader, (Rye-adder) and the next day head to the Elan Valley Visitor Centre - get your breakfast here and spend some time off the bike learning about the reservoirs and uploading maps via the wifi - then back on the bike to go exploring, to discover the reservoirs and dams - you can ride on top of most of the dams!
    After finding all dams, follow the moors road to Aberystwyth (Abber-us-two-ith) via Cwmystwyth, (Coom-us-two-ith) which will get you back onto faster roads to get you home.
    * 'In Welsh, L is one letter, and LL is also one letter - not two. the same applies for: D, DD, C, CH, N, NG, M, F, FF, R, RH, T, TH. (There's also no K, Q, V, X, Z in the Welsh Alphabet)
    **LL (For example 'Llan' meaning church or place of worship) isn't pronounced 'Clan' per se - but is close enough and will get you by.
    ***Any word you see that starts with 'Llan' means 'Church of', followed by the name of usually a saint or significant person. For example, Llandudno, is Llan-Tudno, meaning 'Church of Tudno' - You recently rode over the Great Orme and will have ridden past St Tudno's church near the hairpins.

      Saffy, in days of old, when knights were bold... the UK used to have road signs for slopes with 1 in 4; 1 in 5; 1 in 6 etc. written underneath, until it all got swapped, over night, probably due to the EU, to read 5%, 10%, etc. Old school vs new school. So, can I ask you, if a slope is 5%, just what is the 5% actually measuring? Is it 5% of a 90° right angle, making it 4.5°?

      5% is the same as a 20th, so 5% used to be represented on signs as 1/20 which means that for every 20 feet/yards/metres travelled you would ascend/descend 1 foot/yard/metre, depending on which direction you are travelling.

      @@Capesthorn I'm old school, so the 1ins are how my brain works, but as for the percentages for inclines, well they are just mental. When we say a percentage, what exactly is it a percentage of though? Is it in our example 5% of a 90° right angle? That would make it to be 4.5° incline. I have never used a percentage as a measure of an angle. Not in geography or mathematics. But I can tell you a disabled ramp is 1 in 12.
