Mind you, the movie Drum Line had just came out as well.
Okay? Green was better as a whole but the other group was to cocky when they wasn't really doing nothing but relying on the guy playing the snare who was nice. Neither should be battling based off this recording but good job for the musical displayed and probably took hundreds of hours to come by it's not easy so keep up the good work.
@@knockerz3140 Nope this is kids playing dirty beats. Not tradition at all but everyone wants to have a name now or a style. Well...call it what it is, pep band dirt. My bassline in high school played back sticking flam drags clean but never humped a drum...
@@Kirbyfire73 yeah, well, look up some HBCU show style bands and you'll see a whole lot more in your life. You've probably casually seen them before but didn't realise that they were tenors, not basses. It's just how the tradition does things. Probably to have a balance of multitenors and snares being horizontal and basses and singletenors being vertical. Their job is to be loud and wild sounding, like thunder, having the most basic rhythm parts but acting like they're the dopest thing on the field lol (and possibly to develop muscle strength for the newbies who aren't skilled enough yet to make the other sections lol). Kind of like the viola of the drumline.
@@OdaKa Before you start reading, let me say I didn't intend for my response to be this long, it just kind happened... After looking into what you said, I've found that I have actually seen them before like you said, but just thought it was an extremely weird drumline. I'm not sure if I just don't understand the concept of it, or if it's just bad compared to the standards that my drumline instructors have that have transferred to the people playing. At 3:43, after he finished the tap off, they immediately sped up like crazy. And it's not like a gradual increase in tempo as if it were part of the music, it immediately increased. My instructor would be all over us if that happened. My drumline doesn't do anything remotely similar to this. We do preform drumline shows, but it's not... boring? Like really the only thing that got the crowed excited was when the snares did a little battle. In our drumline show we end up marching in pretty much every directions, do do-si-dos, visuals, drops (which I hate because I play tenors), and we move the upper portion of our body, so that our drums go up and down bending at the waist (which I also hate because it kills my back). But the choreography in this is just like "why?" Humping your drum just looks immature. Also you said the reason for it is to "possibly develop muscle strength for the newbies" and to me I find that highly unlikely. Because of how much the "vertical tenor" resonates when being struck, how high the pitch is, and because of the fact that the stick/mallet barely makes the drumhead visibly move when it hits the drum, you can tell that the tension of the drum is pretty high which means your stick/mallet is going to get a lot more rebound. Now snares, and normal tenors have a lot of rebound, but it's difficult for newbies because they haven't built up the chops to control the rebound. What my drumline has are toms or more commonly known as flubs (although we just call them toms). Essentially what it is, is drum 4 (taken from a normal set of tenors) but muffled so it pretty much just becomes a Remo practice pad that can go on a harness, but it's louder than a practice pad. If you've ever used one, you would know that it has little rebound. Most of the time in my drumline, the newbies are put on toms so that they can build up their chops. Then once they transfer from toms to tenors for example, they try to play a note and the stick rebounds like crazy because they're used to playing pretty hard in order to make the stick rebound. The last thing I don't get is their drumline battle etiquette. I get that people are going to be competitive, but at the end of the day, everyone's just trying to play their instrument and have fun. Many of the videos that I've seen just completely despise the other drumline or try and make fun of the other drumline including this one. The kid who thinks he's hot shit just gets right up in everyone's face to annoy the other drumline. Even if they're rival schools, they should still treat each other with respect. In winter drumline or indoor drumline (whichever name you prefer) yes we're competitive, but we show each other respect and hope that nothing bad happens to them during their show. After we had finished our show, we sat in the bleachers and watch the rest of the shows, and one of them had a color guard. One girl threw the flag towards the other girl as a part of the show, however she didn't catch it. Everyone in my drumline gasped and immediately felt really bad for them. Or one time, someone's drumhead broke in our drumline during a show, and the other schools felt bad for us.
