      if i’m being honest the 450 hasn’t changed much. riding my ‘08 450R and ‘21 450R back to back, they make the extremely similar power…. my ‘08 is by far the powerhouse of the two…. i have an ‘01 cr250 aswell and it’ll spank the ‘21 off the line. the big difference is how far ergonomics and suspension has changed. there is no being “comfortable” on my older girls. my ‘21 has NO vibration, just soaks up everything in the suspension and i can move all over the cockpit of that bike. one thing that does amaze me though is the ‘21 requires just as much maintenance and wrench time as the 250r…. makes no sense but it’s true and i’m much happier working on my 250. no silly fuel injection and mapping, no stupid ass traction control GOD i HATE traction control and all the “features” on my ‘21. i bought my 450 to actually feel the difference between generations and i’m very disappointed to be honest. my ‘21 is actually on the market now and the beans i get from it are going into the 250. 250 2T’s can and will embarrass a 450 as long as the rider has the patience and mindset to build a bike vs buying it👍

    Too much "Air" meant a Broken Ankle on the Landing and I could not feel my hands at the end of the day.
    Then one day a Guy shows up on a Suzuki RM 250 and let us know what real garage we were all riding and things were never the same.
    The changes came so fast it made your head spin.
    forward mounted shocks gave way to next years lay down shocks which gave way to next years mono-shocks.
    Then the one shock moved all over the place until it found its current home.
    Most of these Kids never even Heard of Noguchi.
    In 30 short years the sport transformed into kids riding race ready bikes out of the box on Daddy's money and Have no idea what it was like to deliver papers for a month to get a new Preston Petty Front Fender for your DT175.
    It is amazing how quickly all the changes topped out around 1990 and now a 30 year old dirt bike is just as fast as today's

      I would disagree, you ridden a 500? I rode my cr500af (89 engine) the other week with a mate on a 2020 yz 250. We both had about the same pull through the gears. The difference? The 250 tapped out 5th and he was looking for a 6th gear, I only just clicked 4th a couple of times. On a tight track 250s stand a chance, on an open track not a chance in hell.

    • @prospectorsoils1240
      @prospectorsoils1240 4 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      The cool contrarian that’s not at all how I see it. Ridden one for almost 25 yrs. the tracks got tighter and tighter Wich put any of the big bores at a disadvantage. I think the number one reason is they are mega intimidating compared to a 250 2-stroke. I rode 250’s through the late 80’s and early 90’s then stepped up to the 500. I rode with a big group from above tree line to the lakebed deserts. It takes a lot of confidence and really good throttle control to let those big 2-strokes sing. I could hold my own in the tight single track but when the trail would open up I’m gone and you’re not gonna catch me on a smaller bike. To make myself clear it’s not just top speed it’s how fast they get there. It’s almost immediate. Nasty animals of bikes. I had a 92 that I kept track of how much 2-stroke oil I burned. I put right around 50k miles on that bike with less than 1% of that being pavement. Straight animals that are reliable as anvils. IMO it doesn’t get any better. I’ve owned almost all the muscle bikes KX500, KTM550, XR650r and I currently have a Berg 570 and nine CR500’s. They all have faults. The old Honda’s have the fewest. The real question is where are the new muscle bikes? I can’t think of one! A KTM 690 doesn’t count, not even close.

    • @ibewillow
      @ibewillow 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@prospectorsoils1240 I see your perspective, reliable, low maintenance bikes for open terrain. And if you like them go buy some more. The fact is though, if youre riding with equally skilled riders youre not holding your own on single track and as the day wears on you get slower. This is really simple, theyre not as agile as a small bore two stroke and not as comfortable at speed as a big bore four stroke and that is why the manufacturers cant sell them. I know there is a minority that will defend them...but if you werent a minority the manufacturers would still make them.

They keep up with the 450’s, I know they are missing 50cc from the 500 but, your talking a huge technology gap in between these bikes, I have no idea the difference in weight, but you also have to consider the research and development in the new 4 stroke engines too. CCs vs CCs, a 2 stroke motor has double the horsepower potential of a 4 stroke motor as they have a powerstroke every 2 revolutions of the engine vs every 4 revolutions of the motor for 4 strokes. A properly tuned, 500cc, water cooled 2 stroke is a wicked beast. Being "on the pipe" takes on an entirely new meaning. Emission standards, as they did with Mazda's Wankel engine, eventually did them in.

    Great videos of Jr. I especially liked the video when Jr. came off the track and Sr told him not to quit and finish the moto.......reminds of a time when I was racing and busted my ass off a jump, I picked myself up after having the shit knocked out of me.....A spectator came over and asked me if I was alright.....we talked for a minute or two and he told me to get out there and finish.......I think I got the checkered flag about the same time they dropped the gate for the next class moto.........lol

    • @ynotitsme
      @ynotitsme 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wrong! the "Widow Maker" Got its place in moto cross from the old lost & forgotten dirt bike called a "Maco" . The "Maco 250cc" "hill climber" better known as the "Maco 250cc",(widow maker) Maco's were also known as "MacoBrako". Maco was the only bikes sold with an extra piston & wrist pin from the factory. Because they were known for piston & wrist pin issues... Just a little history lesson....

    I am a girl so I never actually rode a CR 500 but I did have a YZ 125 back in the day and I did race a class10 desert car. I can tell you those big bore 2 stroke bikes could accelerate like a bat out of hell. I would guess they top out at 90, maybe 95. The cars could take them on a long straight where top speed was possible and the cars topped out at +/- 100, maybe 105. I can't imagine even modern 4 strokes really have an advantage over any big bore 2 stroke. Those things have insane acceleration. I would guess a modern 4 stroke has an easier to use power band but a good rider could make up for that. I would bet if you put that big 500 in a modern frame with a modern suspension it could do more than compete. Fun to see the old vs. new.

    Check I didnt say the four strokes were slow
    All.im.stateimg is the 3 stroke is a differant animal all together 4 stroke has way more moveing parts 2 stroke is hafe the weight
    And yes they came a long way the Bottom line
    Is 2 stokes are faster for the purpose there intended for .raceing
    I've riden both I give credit where
    Credits due but with a good
    Rider on a track
    Your not going to.beat a 2 stroke
