  • BFG KO2's - 6 month review - Pros and Cons - Watch Before Buying!
In this video I review the BF Goodrich KO2's. I've had them for about 6 months now, and go over my experiences with them, and what I consider their strengths and weaknesses. I plan to test them even more in the coming months and provide updated feedback if applicable.

Excellent & fair review. I originally wanted to put the Falken Wildpeak AT3W on my Subaru but they didn't make a small enough size so I got the KO2s instead. I have never run any other AT tire so I have nothing to compare to, but after 2½ years of running KO2s, here are my impressions:
    • Huge leap in offroad performance compared to high quality all-season tires (but probably true of any AT tire)
    • Can handle airing way down which very noticeably increases traction even further on rocks, dirt, sand, and snow. I regularly run them at 15 psi and have never lost a bead or suffered wheel damage.
    • Fabulous in fresh snow. If there's at least an inch or two of fresh, unpacked snow, and the tires are aired down, it's like driving a snowmobile...grippy and controlled.
    • Less impressive on packed-down snow such as streets and highways that have been driven on.
    • No benefit on ice...they seem to slip just as much as an all-season tire. I drove over the same icy highway as Meagan that same day and could barely keep the Forester going in a straight line.
    • On the heavy side. Probably less of an issue if you're driving a reasonably powerful truck but noticeable on my little car, and has impacted MPGs.
    • I have not experienced issues with rain (and I get plenty of opportunities living in western Oregon) BUT that may be down to the fact that my car is underpowered and probably just doesn't have enough oomph to break 'em loose. :-)
    • Zero punctures or failures of any sort in 2½ years of extensive backcountry travel over all kinds of terrain including lots of sharp spiky lava and other rock
    • A little noisier than my previous all-season tires, but to be expected and a fair tradeoff for increased trail performance
Would I buy these for my Forester again? Yes. Would I consider trying another brand of AT tire? Also yes. I feel there is very little that disappoints about the KO2, but also imagine other AT tires would provide similar performance for perhaps less cost and/or less weight.

Very informative and in line with my experience. I have KO2s on my 2017 Tacoma TRD and they have been awesome in all types of weather. Probably their weakest area is mud but I try and avoid those conditions anyway. Snow, highway and forest service roads are where they excel. Thanks Edward!

Thank you, Edward, for your honest review. I am in the market for tire replacement on my 2016 Jeep Compass. The present tires, Kumho, have been on the vehicle since my buying the Compass in 2017 and there's still a safe amount of tread left. They have provided excellent performance and gas mileage. I don't know if Kumho makes a more aggressive tire like your KO2's. The KO2's seem to be very popular with overland campers and I did have them on a 2005 Ford Sport Trac. I commuted to and from a job from San Bernardino up to over 5000 feet elevation. In the winter snow and ice conditions I never experienced any difficulties with my commute. Happy New Year to you and yours; your baby is precious. Take care and be safe.

I had Ko's on my 79 Scout II, Fantastic up in the hills on snow a number of times I had to air down to 10 pounds in freezing cold. No air pump so I waddled back into town some 30 miles. Only drove under 30mph with the tires this low and never had a bead break. Also they have computer designed tread so considering their fairly aggressive tread they were very quite on the highway. No they are not mudder tires. But for back country exploring they are fantastic. In the mountains on sidehills that have had slope slippage you don't want big fat soft tires. You are already leaning over, staring down a 2000 foot cliff. They are still my go to off-road venturing tire.

  • @jamesb9780
    @jamesb9780 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I've run the K02s on my Tacoma for a couple of years. General thoughts mirror your experiences: Fairly quiet tire, durable on the forest roads (no worries), seem to be long lasting. I live in British Columbia and switched out to a dedicated snow tire Nov - Mar/Apr for concerns around ice and wet snow/slush that is part of winter here. This give me extra assurance of traction in winter and does prolong the life of the KO2s by having them off the truck 1/3 of the year. Wintertime I tend to be on the paved roads so the softer tread of a winter tire isn't a liability and do appreciate the tough tread and sidewalls of the K02 the rest of the year.

I have stuck to the Wildpeaks for price reasons and noise. I feel the Wildpeaks do not have as much road noise as the KO2s. But both tires I feel are very comparable

I watch and subscribe to numerous overlanding channels but the disappointing aspect to them is they are either Tacomas or jeeps or other vehicles, but not full size rigs. I have 2014 Chevy Silverado Z71 crew cab and lets just say it is very difficult to get all the good stuff from manufacturers for my rig. Very limited indeed unless you have Tundra or Ram. SO your reviews of products that do fit full size rigs is what keeps me on your channel. Keep it coming and as always great video

I live on the northeast corner of Washington state on the Canadian border where we have some pretty crazy winter driving conditions. I liked mine at first. I used them on my work truck for my Forestry Company in the PNW. I track on about 30,000 miles a year. Towards the end of their life cycle they would hold rocks that would drill through the compound in the sipes and cause unexpected punctures. They where awesome the first 20,000 miles though. They didn't do well in mud. I prefer Goodyear Duratracs.

I have probably twenty years with the different versions of this tire. Currently have three year old KO2 on mt F150. The only con I would give them is that they are a harder tire compound which does harden with age which does effect the performance on wet pavement starting from a stopped position especially heading up grades. They are definitely heavy but how else you going to build a tire to air down to fifteen and go rock crawling. Thats like saying my framing hammer should be as light as my tack hammer. I have never had a flat with these tires. They get harder with age and the road noise follows this. Costco is the place to get these if you are comfortable doing your own rotation and such. Last set of 32's for the truck were under a thousand installed five hundy cheaper than Discount or Shwab

Love my KO2s. FWIW I am rocking the stock tire size on my taco and have not noticed a difference in gas mileage. Living in the desert I haven't really exposed them to snow or other winter conditions but they seem to handle dirt and rocks perfectly. I air down to 20psi on a stock 16" rim and tire size. Arizona didn't get much for a monsoon either so I can't comment on how they do in mud.
They are also not noticeably louder on the highway (again, stock truck, stock tire size). They do seem to be one of the most expensive tires in the stock size for my taco.

The 315/75/16 km3 are ok for sand but I really didn't like this wide size in loose rocks and wet roads... They just slip.
I recently change to 285/75/16 and the steering has improved and highway road driving also of course, but the height loss is an handicap. I was thinking on 285/75/17 (34") or 315/75/16 ko2 cause they're a little narrow than km3. I'm not sure but I believe the 35's are smoother than 33's
The perfect tire size would be 275/85/16 or even 265/85/16

I made a video on another tire where we asked for feedback on the KO2s... got quite a few comments about others getting slices also. Correct me if I am wrong, but you shouldn't deflate for snow driving. You want the tires to bite through the soft snow to grip the ground. You don't want to 'float' on snow by increasing the contact patch by deflating. Did plenty (relatively speaking) of snow driving last year with KO2s and they were great.

I had the KO2s for a couple of years on my Wrangler. They were COMPLETELY worthless in mud. May as well have been running slicks. But other than that, they were an excellent tire, especially in snow. I never noticed any concerns on wet roads with them, either. I run Nitto Ridge Grapplers now, which are hybrid tires that do much better in mud, but not as good in snow as the KO2s. Ya picks yer poison.

This applies to most M&S tires but after 2+ years of owning these on a Jeep, I've decided they are not worth the extra costs. I just ordered a set of Kuhmo A/T 51's at half the price. Reason I made such a big reduction is, after a year of running the KO's I noted a loss of traction on wet and snow covered surfaces. And just like the Goodyear Duratracs they replaced, which also lost traction on wet/snow covered road, they tend to get HARD over time, which also causes more road noise and a substantial loss of traction. They were ok in mud and dirt/sand, but IMO because a hazard in the rain and snow.

I grew up in Maine. If the road looks black with any kind of moisture or humidity and it is near freezing ( black ice can form above ambient temps of 32° F.) assume you are on black ice and drive according. This means slow way down. Follow this advice and black ice becomes less of an enigma for those not accustom to encountering in on a regular basis.

I know this is an old video, but IMHO - I think the KO2 is the perfect Swiss army knife of tires! Ive tried others and I keep coming back to them. I have 2 built Jeep TJ's, a Tundra and a 2023 4Runner TRD Off Road Premium. All of them have KO2's because they are perfect for highway, trail, snow and sand. They are quiet and smooth on the highway and handle off-road excellently. And the air pressures you mention are abosulty correct. The bigger tire size will always kill your gas milage, as you engine works harder to turn them.

Owner of two Jeep’s , two Powerwagons, and four 3/4 ton plow trucks. I’ve been buying BFG four years. Bought Falken because couldn’t get BFG size I needed. Great tire but isn’t as durable from damage and they wear fast compared to BFG. Plus noisy as they wear down. BFG shine in all areas except mud. They don’t clean out. I feel you can’t go wrong with either tire. BFG are a better all around tire for my personal applications. Stock size BFG on my plow trucks work, wear, and cost are the way to go.

My KO2s absolutely get louder as they’ve worn. But I feel that’s true of any tire. Difference with these is I have 65k on them with plenty of tread left. I’ve never needed more grip in off-road conditions, and towing my boat they have been very good. If you only go off road a few times a year I’d say go with something a little more mild. Think about how you drive most of the time.

My 18 JLUR comes with 33" ko2s, I got easily 43k miles out of them and the tires still had thread between, still never slipped off roading. They were great in the rain and snow, they didn't do well in mud, they are a great
    all around tire.
    It's also not fair to compare a 33" wildpeak AT to a 35" ko2.

I have had the BFG K02 's on my 4runner since day one. it's been 4 years since. Overall a very durable long lasting tire. I would say the best thing about them is their longevity. 50k on them and they still have lots of life left. I think they pretty much do everything quite well, nothing great... when it gets icy they're pretty slick. Though not a snow tire.....2wd it struggles to get traction, even with a light foot. Overall I'm pretty happy with them.

What makes a winter/snow tire grip ice so much better than a BFG KO2???

    • @dbarton8651
      @dbarton8651 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@mercedesbenzs600bash generally a softer tread compound and tread design id say. Funny, after 65k on my ko2's I hit a piece of metal which blew a tire, so I got new ko2's. 😅 they're handling our snow storms quite well, but I don't doubt that proper snow tires would be better. Mostly stopping and cornering!👍

@@JASmith-oy8db Yes, I just went with the stock size. this is my 2nd set of ko2's that have been on the vehicle since 20 miles new, so I don't have any input on mileage. though mine is currently sitting at 19.6 after 225 miles on this tank👍
