Hi Dave, Thanks for your very helpful video. Two minor points that I think could make your future presentations more effective would be: 1) raise your laptop higher so you aren't looking down into it, using a remote keyboard for input; and 2) Adjust your background and perhaps use the soft focus feature so it's less distracting, and change the lighting to eliminate the shining spots underneath your eyes. Thank you for this tutorial! I work as a sign language interpreter and I need to be in a larger view on screen with the presenter and sometimes with a presenter and powerpoint. What do you suggest for that situation? Thanks!
I have not faced this situation before. One option to try in both Teams and Zoom is to see if using the Spotlight feature for the presenter and yourself will work. Spotlight allows attendees to see that video feed (or feeds) larger than other feeds even if content is being shared. Try this and see if it might work well enough. For Zoom I did some research and found two articles that may be helpful. The first describes using Zoom's interpretation feature to set up an ASL interpreter: languagers.com/how-to-add-remote-asl-interpreters-on-zoom-conference-meetings/. The second is from Zoom and explains more about this feature: support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/articles/360034919791-Translating-your-meeting-or-webinar. I hope those help if spotlighting doesn't work well enough.
You would have to have your notes printed as a PDF and manually scroll through the document as you present. The Reading View is the only PowerPoint window open using the method in this video. If you use Teams you can use the Presenter modes to put you video beside your slides as I explain in this article: www.thinkoutsidetheslide.com/use-the-standout-presenter-mode-in-a-teams-meeting-to-put-the-presenters-video-on-top-of-shared-content/
Unfortunately there isn't a way to do this with Presenter View. If you have two screens and you want to see your speaking notes, you can use the technique in this video to share one screen in the meeting and scroll through a PDF of the Notes pages from PowerPoint on the other screen. I have an article that has options for seeing your speaking notes when not using Presenter View at www.thinkoutsidetheslide.com/seeing-your-speaking-notes-in-powerpoint-while-presenting-slides-in-microsoft-teams-if-you-only-have-one-screen/

This is really clear thank you. Maybe you can help me... I’m helping host a family event where different people will speak for a few minutes each. While they are speaking it would be nice to show a photo or possibly a few photos on a slide, however we don’t want to share the photo as the whole screen with only their face very tiny for those who have the speaker view open. The people speaking and other viewers may not be very adept at zoom so I want to be able to organise the whole thing smoothly from my screen. The only thing I could think is that I could create something similar to what you have created here, except instead of powerpoint and camera I would use powerpoint zoom. Then i could spotlight the speaker, and then share my entire screen... this is the only solution I can think of. But I just wonder if there will be too much delay with their voice coming from them to me and then back to everyone else.
I am pretty sure there will be too much of a delay with the video portion going to you and back out compared to the voice. I have seen this happen recently and it was very noticeable and a more complex setup with other equipment was needed.
Nice solution . Thank you! Question: I am using "presenters view" on Mac with two monitors. I want to minimize or adjust the size of the presenters window but Mac doesn't show the buttons to mininimize. Is that fine with Mac? it does work on windows. I would appreciate your comments. thanks
You have discovered one of the differences between Presenter View on the Mac and on Windows. The Mac version does not allow you to take the Presenter View window out of full screen mode while the Windows version does allow it. This has been a request to Microsoft for some time and hopefully it will change in the future.
That does happen sometimes and in my experience it is not consistent so it can be hard to figure out how to resolve it. It can sometimes be a function of the computer or the network. One thing that helps on Zoom is enabling the option to optimize for sharing video. Both Zoom and Teams will be introducing features that place the presenter's video in front of the slides but I haven't been able to test it so don't know if it has the same issue or not.
If you can see the Teams meeting controls and have permission to record the meeting, you should be able to start the recording. You will have to click on the border of the PowerPoint window to return focus to the slides so you can continue your presentation.
Thank you for this informative presentation. The clean desktop look is really a bonus. How could a group project with three sequential presenters use this? At the end of this PPt presentation, class participation is expected. Class size is approximately 16 persons. Any ideas?
Each person in the group would have to set up and share their screen using the approach in the video. There is no way to switch the video being shown on one person's computer. Once the presentation is over, stop sharing the screen and you can then see everyone in the meeting and have a discussion. I hope that helps.
As long as the document camera is recognized by the operating system as a camera, you can use it as your camera in Zoom or Teams. Then you can use this technique to have your document camera beside your slides.
Thanks for this Dave, very helpful. It baffles me that Zoom, Teams, Webex etc have not yet designed their software to allow people to record their presentations with a larger video! I would like to get rid of the the horizontal bars at the top and bottom of the powerpoint window - where it says 'PowerPoint Slide Show' and the slide number at the bottom. Any suggestions on how to do that?
Glad you found the video helpful. Zoom and Teams have announced that they will be giving presenters more options for arranging their slides and video but until we see those features released we won't know what they look like. There is no way to get rid of the top and bottom bars, they are part of Reading view. One way to reduce focus on them is to change your Office Theme to Dark Grey and then the bars are a medium grey instead of white.
@@ThinkOutsideTheSlide I actually found another solution using zoom. Instead of sharing my whole desktop (I actually didn't see any option to do that, although I thought you could) I shared a 'portion of my screen'. This was under the 'advanced' tab in the screen share dialogue box. That then allows you to move and reshape a rectangular window (green border) and the final recording only shows what is within this window. A very small irritation I have is that the hotkey for starting and stopping record in zoom (Alt + R) doesn't seem to work when sharing this way - so I'll just have to edit out the first and last few seconds of my recordings while I search for the control to click! Thanks
Yes, that will certainly work. To make Zoom hotkeys universal, go into the Zoom settings and go to the section for shortcut keys. There you can check a box to make that hotkey universal so it is recognized by Zoom even if you are in another program.
You can see the chat in Teams if you open the chat pane and that will be there even when you share your slides. You may need to restore the window because it minimizes the window when you share content. If meeting participants have their cameras on, you will see some of them but not all of them in Teams. The new Teams meeting experience that is rolling out does improve this.
Zoom is different. It allows you to share just a portion of your screen so you can put the chat and videos in another part of the screen and still see them. It is easier than Teams in that respect. If you have a second screen, you can set Zoom to use dual screen mode and you have more flexibility as to where the videos and chat can be placed.
The slides are being displayed in Reading View, which displays the slide show in the PowerPoint window. That allows you to size them and position them on your desktop. I have a video on Reading View at th-cam.com/video/NFQ9EMlP3jI/w-d-xo.html
Thank you for this. I'm working in Zoom, not Teams. I still can't get the presenter's image to fill half the screen. The presentation side is fine. What have I misunderstood?
In both Zoom and Teams you need to stop sharing your camera in the meeting platform before starting the Camera app in Windows. The camera can only feed one app at a a time. I hope that helps.
Blurring the background would have to be a function of the Camera app or whichever app you are using to display your video. This is not a current feature of the Camera app and I am not aware of an app that would do that.
I cover a number of ways to see your notes while showing the audience your slides in this article: www.thinkoutsidetheslide.com/seeing-your-speaking-notes-in-powerpoint-while-presenting-slides-in-microsoft-teams-if-you-only-have-one-screen/. I hope one of them will work for you.
In some quick testing in Google Slides it appears that if you present in Presenter View mode the slides are shown in the browser window, not full screen. I would think that you could then move the browser window beside the Camera app.
How smooth it appears can depend on a number of factors, such as how fast you computer is, how high resolution the screen is that you are sharing (higher resolution screens force the meeting platform to distribute more data), and the internet speed of your audience members. If you are using Zoom, you can try turning on the option of sharing video content which increases the frame rate Zoom uses to share the screen.
I started using this mode and it's excellent. In teams if I browse and share it removes my ppt controls.. Like I want to jump slide.. I can only move slides progressively Also it starts always from slide one.. Anyway, I can start at the slide I want in browse share?
Using the Slide Show in a window is known as Reading View and it has all the animation and transition features but it does not have all of the features of full screen Slide Show. You should be able to start at the current slide by pressing Shift+F5 or using the From Current Slide button on the Slide Show ribbon. To jump to another slide, right-click in the window and click on Go To Slide. This brings up a scrollable list of all the slides in the file listing the text in the title placeholder of the slide. You can then click on the slide you want to jump to. Hope that helps.
Thanks for sharing this tip. For some who have corporate laptops that IT controls, they may not be able to install other software and they will have to use the Camera app.
I have an online course on recording your presentation which includes recording your video beside your slides like you see in this video. The course details are at thinkoutsidetheslide.teachable.com/p/advanced-recording-of-narrated-powerpoint-slides-for-a-flipped-classroom
Great presentation and lives up entirely to the name of your channel ...ThinkOutsideThe Slide. Really neat thinking. Does Zoom have a slide show view option like Webinar Jam. I have used that to run my slides on WJ and then used screen split in Win 10 to run my PPT in the Notes mode on the side. Not sure if one can do that in Zoom...any idea on that?
Thanks for the kind comments on the video. I am not familiar with Webinar Jam so I am not sure what their options are. In Zoom, you would be able to see your speaking notes on the screen as you are showing the slides to your audience by using Method 2 in this article: www.thinkoutsidetheslide.com/seeing-your-speaking-notes-in-powerpoint-while-presenting-slides-in-a-zoom-meeting-if-you-only-have-one-screen/. If you have a large enough screen, you could combine that method with the technique in this video to have your video, slides, and speaking notes all on the screen at the same time.
ThinkOutsideTheSlide.com Dave, I absolutely love your videos and the solutions that you have to make webinars and online meetings so effortless. I followed the link that you had put in your comments above and was floored especially by the way of conducting a Zoom meeting on a single screen with presenter view and with all notes available. That was perfect. I dare say you are bringing back the romance of making presentations.
I don't have a Mac here so I can't say for sure. I would think the Photo Booth app on the Mac would be the substitute for the Windows Camera app. I think the dock on a Mac can auto-hide like the Windows taskbar. I am not sure how to hide desktop icons on the Mac. I would think you could then adapt the rest of the steps to set up the screen arrangement and share the screen in Teams or Zoom. If you do try it out, let me know how it works!
I just posted an article with instructions on using this technique on a Mac. The article is at www.thinkoutsidetheslide.com/present-with-your-video-beside-your-powerpoint-slides-in-microsoft-teams-or-zoom-on-a-mac/
When you share your screen, the audience sees whatever is on the screen, including your video and slides. As a participant in Zoom or Teams, pinning someone only makes their video larger on your own screen. As the presenter if you spotlight your own video in Teams it replaces what you are sharing on Windows or Mac or puts your cropped video beside the slides on an iPad (this video explains how to use Spotlight in Teams when sharing slides: th-cam.com/video/CKHuDpnaOxA/w-d-xo.html). Zoom does not allow spotlighting while sharing content. Both Teams and Zoom are introducing new options for videos beside slides later this year so check for the updates as they get released.
Both Zoom and Teams are introducing features that allow you to put your video in front of your slides. So something like this is coming to both platforms.

@@ThinkOutsideTheSlide Thank you for replying, much appreciated
Nice solution . Thank you! Question: I am using "presenters view" on Mac with two monitors. I want to minimize or adjust the size of the presenters window but Mac doesn't show the buttons to mininimize. Is that fine with Mac? it does work on windows. I would appreciate your comments. thanks
You have discovered one of the differences between Presenter View on the Mac and on Windows. The Mac version does not allow you to take the Presenter View window out of full screen mode while the Windows version does allow it. This has been a request to Microsoft for some time and hopefully it will change in the future.
Thanks for sharing, this is neat, but the video audio lags? when we play the re-recording any tips for that?
That does happen sometimes and in my experience it is not consistent so it can be hard to figure out how to resolve it. It can sometimes be a function of the computer or the network. One thing that helps on Zoom is enabling the option to optimize for sharing video. Both Zoom and Teams will be introducing features that place the presenter's video in front of the slides but I haven't been able to test it so don't know if it has the same issue or not.
Thank you, very helpful. My colleagues across Africa will be treated to some more professional looking training sessions.
Glad it helped!
Hi , thanks for some really useful tips. Do you know is there is a way to start the Teams recording after screen share has been enabled?
Thank u very much... from bottom of heart...
I'm glad the video was helpful
Very Helpfull
I'm glad you found the video helpful
Can I do this with my document camera as well
As long as the document camera is recognized by the operating system as a camera, you can use it as your camera in Zoom or Teams. Then you can use this technique to have your document camera beside your slides.
very helpful. thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
GENIUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I DIDNT EVEN THINK OF THAT
Thanks!
@@ThinkOutsideTheSlide Oh great. Thanks for that too
Merci beaucoup !
I'm glad you found the video helpful
Very useful thank you
Glad it was helpful!
Great video. If I choose this format will I be able to see the chat box and my 50+ participants?
You can see the chat in Teams if you open the chat pane and that will be there even when you share your slides. You may need to restore the window because it minimizes the window when you share content. If meeting participants have their cameras on, you will see some of them but not all of them in Teams. The new Teams meeting experience that is rolling out does improve this.
@@ThinkOutsideTheSlide Thank you. Is this true for ZOOM , too?
Zoom is different. It allows you to share just a portion of your screen so you can put the chat and videos in another part of the screen and still see them. It is easier than Teams in that respect. If you have a second screen, you can set Zoom to use dual screen mode and you have more flexibility as to where the videos and chat can be placed.
@@ThinkOutsideTheSlide Thank you!
Thanks for the info! Will try this! :) Peter
I hope it works well for you
Thaaank youuu veryyy muuuchhh
Can you please help me get the powerpoint slides on the right side? I am not finding how or where to crop those slides. Thank you!
I hope that helps.
thanks a lot... wonderful information. Could you please make a video on how to blur the background in this same situation?
Blurring the background would have to be a function of the Camera app or whichever app you are using to display your video. This is not a current feature of the Camera app and I am not aware of an app that would do that.
Excellent presentation. Is there a way to use the two screen mode om ppt / zoom so I can see my notes?
I cover a number of ways to see your notes while showing the audience your slides in this article: www.thinkoutsidetheslide.com/seeing-your-speaking-notes-in-powerpoint-while-presenting-slides-in-microsoft-teams-if-you-only-have-one-screen/. I hope one of them will work for you.
This is great! Do you know if it is possible to do the same thing when using Google Slides instead of PowerPoint? Thanks!
In some quick testing in Google Slides it appears that if you present in Presenter View mode the slides are shown in the browser window, not full screen. I would think that you could then move the browser window beside the Camera app.
@@ThinkOutsideTheSlide I will give that a try. Thank you!
This is brilliant. I tried it and my video appears jumpy when viewed by others. Is there anything I can do to improve the stream quality?
How smooth it appears can depend on a number of factors, such as how fast you computer is, how high resolution the screen is that you are sharing (higher resolution screens force the meeting platform to distribute more data), and the internet speed of your audience members. If you are using Zoom, you can try turning on the option of sharing video content which increases the frame rate Zoom uses to share the screen.
@@ThinkOutsideTheSlide Thank you - I check out some of those variables. Can't wait to try this approach on my next event!
Thanks! Can I still record the whole Teams lesson for my students as normal?
Yes you can! It would allow students to see this view when they watch the recording because Teams records whatever screen you are sharing.
I started using this mode and it's excellent. In teams if I browse and share it removes my ppt controls.. Like I want to jump slide.. I can only move slides progressively
Also it starts always from slide one..
Try using VLC instead of the camera app you can have it on top and get rid of buttons etc
Thanks for sharing this tip. For some who have corporate laptops that IT controls, they may not be able to install other software and they will have to use the Camera app.
Excellent Hack to record training videos
I'm glad the video was helpful
I would like to pre-record my video like you did.. How did you do that?
Thank you!
Great lesson Dave! Any idea of whether or how this works on a Mac?
@@ThinkOutsideTheSlide Thanks Dave! I'll give this a try.
@@ThinkOutsideTheSlide With a Mac you can have multiple desktops, so you would use a clean one.
Would be great to add how this option works when sharing your screen and pinning different presenters other than yourself.
Both Teams and Zoom are introducing new options for videos beside slides later this year so check for the updates as they get released.
fantastic!
I’m glad you found the video helpful
Great idea, I was just searching for an app that does this I can't believe it' s not an inbuilt option.
Both Zoom and Teams are introducing features that allow you to put your video in front of your slides. So something like this is coming to both platforms.
Can this be recorded outside of teams?
Since you are displaying your slides and camera on the screen, any app that can record the screen would be able to record this view
Thank you! I was looking for and app to do that!
Glad I could help!
