    Is it possible to overfill the fluids? In other words is it harmful if you accidentally put more fluid than extracted?

      It's possible to overfill if your vehicle is not level when setting the level. And it can lead to increased pressure and overheating, etc. Make sure your vehicle is level and you let it overflow and drain when setting the level. That said, it's possible you put in more fluid than you took out simply because it was low on (old) fluid.

    Thanks for showing us this video! What was the total volume of oil for both front and rear diff's?

      You bet! The front takes between 500 to 600 cc (more than half a quart) and the rear needs more, 800 cc or so (close to a quart). 2 quarts total or 1 quart each will be enough. BMW's specified oil grades for the front and rear are slightly different (I believe for fuel efficiency primarily) but I used the same oil grade for both in the video.

      Also, BMW has Hypoid G1/G3 in its recommendations and API GL-5 is compatible so you can look for aftermarket options like Redline and Valvoline.

      @@profsg Thanks for the info! Yes, BMW does indeed specify different grade for the front. However, like you I've also bought 75W90 full synthetic for both. Have you noticed any issues so far?

    When and why should to change oil?

    • @profsg

      This is usually done every 30,000 miles so the drivetrain has good lubrication and protection for its internal components. No fluid lasts forever and will deteriorate over time, e.g. to lose its ability to lubricate and dissipate heat. For differentials, the fluid will also collect internal shavings and debris from normal wear and, if the fluid is not changed, the contaminants will build up and over time cause further wear/damage to internal components, among others. Bottom line is, regular maintenance like fluid replacement is cheap to avoid much more expensive failures and repairs down the road.

    why to replace the drain plug?

    • @profsg
      @profsg  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Good question! It's a BMW recommendation and I believe the main reason is the integrated sealing ring (not a gasket that you can purchase separately), which one should replace to prevent leaks. This also reduces the risk of plug striping due to repeated use. I'm with you; it'd be great to reuse the plugs. Good news is they are relatively cheap from places like RockAuto.
